I find that the problem expressed by the person who started this topic comes up every so often for me as well. Maybe I just don't notice it as much.
You should make it a point to speak chinese to your parents, or something like that. If you think it's a big problem, you can get a chinese channel if you don't already have one. Try and learn some chinese songs or something as I find the changes in tone make correct pronunciation vital.
Anyway, hope you turn out ok, I'm slightly jealous that you can read and write... my reading and writing is pitiful though I'd probably be able to get the really basic gist of an article, especially if I had pictures to see...
In the case of cantonese though, I'd definitely say that reading and writing is not the easiest. One reason is that it is different to spoken cantonese, and the other is that it takes a LOT of effort to learn.

Kokoroki A waste of time is Scots Gaelige, Irish Gaelige, and welsh are useless because Everyone does speak english there Hey! Irish Gaeilge is beautiful! Ever heard an Irish person spoke it? It sounds incredibly amazing! But, on the other hand, I like to learn languages that I like, not just because of how many speaking it. But I don't think I'm losing my Swedish, and I think I never will. I live here, and I have no plans to move, so then it's kinda hard to lose it, because you hear it everywhere hear. And if you want to lose your English, you shalln't move to this country, because we got kinda much English here too. On TV you can see Englishspeaking shows and so on.

I'd never be able to forget Danish
its a big part of me, and I study alot about our Norse mythology
I'm always in some way 'reminded' that I'm danish, and I'm very proud of it too
So there's no way i'd just forget it
Try singing along to cantonese music?

I have actually fotgotten how to speak my mothertongue gonk My Mothertongue is Punjabi and I could speak it fluently before attending nursery, but a few months before starting nursery my parents started to talk Swedish with me so I would be able to comunicate with my peers, and so, I forgot it crying
I still understand everything when my parents talk Punjabi, but I can't speak it as I keep mixing my Punjabi with Hindi redface (thanks to my Indian series and the Bollywood films)

Yes, English have done terrible things to other smaller language. Like Irish Gaeilge, and Swedish too which I spoke about before; More and more Swedish native speakers uses English words when they speak Swedish. There's not unusual to hear a Swedish teenager say ''s**t, vad det regnar!'' or ''Hon är värsta wannaben''.

My mom is having a similar problem. She's from Micronesia and she speaks Ponepeian but she claims that she can't remember as much as she used to. She rarely talks to her parents or immediate family in the language and it makes me sad. I mean it's a cool language and I wish she taught it to me as a child. Now she doesn't remember it that much.

Eccentric Iconoclast I seem to be slowly but surely turning away from English, my native language. I've been having issues expressing myself, so I've resorted to using French sentences and whatnot. But how can one forget English in an Anglophone country? I kind of forget it, too. I stutter sometimes when I can't think of a word now! gonk I forget simple English words, but can usually think of them in Japanese or Spanish. It's rather ridiculous to me, as no one around me speaks another language- excluding a moved friend and my Spanish and French teachers. Earlier, I forgot the word "opinion." >___> I think, to retain your Cantonese, you should start talking it with your family and buy books in the language.

I will definitely lose my native language if I move to another country, say America. That's kinda sad, because I like it.
