Well the petpet is like a pet for your pet. It can play with it and it will make it happier. You can also battle petpets with other people as you can with neopets but I don't know much about battles. Playing with toys also makes them happy.
The codestones can be used here to train your pet and raise it's stats. You can also use dubloons if you find any here to do the same thing. You can buy books to raise intelligence.

There are a number of free things you can do each day to earn NP or food and items.

Fruit Machine

Free Jelly

Free Omelette

Coltzan's Shrine(Gives items, NP or raises stats)

The Snowager(Get free items sometimes if it is asleep)

Tombola

And some chance games you can play for a small amount of NP to win items or more NP.

Wheel of Excitement

Wheel of Mediocrity

Test Your Strength

If your pet gets hurt or sick then go to the Healing Springs

I joined neopets when it had only been out for about 10 weeks... it was fun considering i was quite young teh games were crudy then, and they still are but i left. My pets are dying at the moment, its a bit boring...

I'm not. This was just knowledge passed onto me by a friend when she was trying to convert me.

I stopped using neopets a long time before I found Gaia. It just wasn't for me.

I just signed up for Neopets...what the hell is wrong with me? gonk

Been there, done that.
The sign up process took so long (the whole "chose a pet" thing) that I never went back.
Why did you do it? First Pokemon, now this. Something tells me I need to come and visit you just to stop you diving head first off the sane board into the loony pool.

Don't knock Pokémon... I have to catch them all!
