Rose looks puzzled.
"Whose Ace?" she shakes her head, "Look, never mind... We have to get you somewhere safe Doctor... Give us a hand here!"

With Nate's help Rose carries the Doctor up the long flight of stairs to her mum's flat. A chill wind blows through the building and across their backs as they huddle on the walkway beside the door. Rose pounds on it with her fist.
"Mum! Mum it's me, Rose! Open up!"
There's no answer. She waits a moment before hitting the door again. This time it swings open, hanging at an odd angle off one hinge. Rose feels a jolt of panic in her stomach as she looks into a pitch black room.

Leaving the Doctor leaning in the doorway, Rose rushed inside. She burst into her mum's bedroom.
"Mum?"
The room was as dark as the rest of the house. Rose flicked the light switch on and off but there seemed to be no electricity. Holding one hand out ahead of her, she stepped blindly into the room.
"Mum? Where are you?"

"Here hun... I'm right here..."

"Where?" Rose took a long step forward, searching for the bed. She shivered in the dank air. Everything had gone silent and black. She took another step towards the bed. Suddenly - as she left the pool of light in the doorway behind her - something plunged forwards out of the darkness. Rose screamed as a long, cold tentacle wrapped itself around her arm and pulled her in.

Rose was shaking almost uncontrollably. The light had burned right through her eyelids and she'd opened them just in time to see some sort of writhing, tentacled creature exploding into dust. Colourful spots now blurred her vision but that wasn't what scared her. That... thing had spoken with her mum's voice.
"Doctor..." she said, clutching his arm, "What was that thing? Please... Please don't say it was... my... my..."
She broke off, unable to even say the words.

Rose stared at him.
"A what?"

The Doctor looked solem as he held his glass of lupe-warm OJ. "That thing shouldn't have been in this dimension. Which can mean only one thing. But first, let me tell you a story about someone I once met. His name was Howard Philips Lovecraft, very sad person...very depressed. Anyway he is famous now for his early horror fiction but what most people don't know is that he was gifted enough to see that some of his stories were real."
He fell silent for a moment. "Not long after the war in Heaven, just after Earth was created, a rip in the barrier between universes opened and a host of creatures invaded. They...in thier own twisted visions, saw themselves as the true creators of the universe they found themselves in." He looked into his glass. "Well, something had to be done to stop thier oppression. So, the celestial hosts waged war...and won. But they couldn't kill thier foes, so they imprisoned them in a sort of limbo-plan. They can observe but couldn't interact. But something went wrong."
He stood up and walked to the window and looked out. "They spread thier 'message' to select few and how they could be released. These were writting down, revised once every so often. The lastest version is called the Necronomicon. In order to prevent thier release, secret orders were formed to protect the few volumes left in existance. This could mean that...somehow, someone has been coersed into taking and using one of the volumes."

As Rose and the Doctor began their search for Jackie Tyler, Nate thought he spotted a brief glimpse of a robed man just outside the entrance. Pulling out his pistol, Nate cautiously approached the doorway. He thought he heard someone chanting outside, though whatever was being said was too faint to be understood. Behind him he heard Rose calling out, "Mum? Mum? Where are you?", and then an older woman's voice replying "Here hun... I'm right here..."

Nate jumped out of the doorway, aiming his gun at where he expected the mysterious robed figure to be. And indeed, he saw the man before him, chanting the words out of some large book. Could it be the dreaded Necronomicon, that accursed tome of the occult written centuries ago by the mad Arab, Abdul Alhazred? Suddenly, the man lifted his head from the book and flashed Nate a chilling glance. Without warning, something snake-like wrapped around Nate's neck, trying to strangle the life out of him. With his free hand he tried to pull the tentacle away, while keeping his gun pointed at the robed man, but his consciousness was quickly slipping away, and the mysterious chanter escaped into the night.

"Docc.tt...orr..." Nate gasped, too weakly to be heard. Without any idea of where he was aiming at, he fired his gun: the shot rang out loudly through the eerily quiet streets of London.
