Mire wearily lifted her head from the forest floor, looking beseechingly at the alpha.

"It won't happen again." she promised. "I'll do better, I swear it...! I--I just..."

She fell silent, wondering whether or not bringing up the things she had seen in her head was worth it or not. It wasn't as though Drik had TOLD her those things, after all, she'd simply imagined them. Whether there was truth to them or not was anyone's guess, but she didn't suppose that it would exactly stand up as concrete evidence against him.

"I'm sorry..." she moaned again.

"What DID happen back there with Drik...?" Choma invited. "Everyone heard you cry out....are you sure you aren't hurt?" As she asked, she looked the omega over in the darkness for wounds, just in case the other female was lying to her.

WHY she would lie to her about such a thing was anyone's guess. Unless, perhaps, it was due to embarrassing circumstances...

"Mire, did he try to breed you against your wishes?" she tried, lowering her voice for the sake of the omega's modesty. It had to have been SOMETHING...

"What...?? Oh, no! No...!!" she declared, mortified. "It was nothing like -that-!"

Had he told Choma that, she wondered? She supposed that Choma would, of course, believe one of her betas over a lowly omega...that was just the way of things.

Choma sighed, aggravated that they were getting nowhere at all this way. It wasn't that she particularly trusted Drik or Mire more than the other, but as their leader, little angered her more than being left in the dark over something that was obviously causing a problem.

"Mire..." she began, and then stopped, wondering how exactly to word it. Too harshly and the smaller female would surely roll onto her back wetting heself. That was the trouble with omegas...with no spine came no tolerance for criticism.

"...I think, perhaps, its time your problems were dealt with. I don't know if you felt strongarmed when I asked you to join our pack, but...its becoming clearer and clearer to me that you aren't yet ready for life with others..."

Mire had known this was coming...from the day she had joined Risen Ashes, she had seen it looming threateningly over the horizon.

She was being ejected from the pack and shaken loose to fend for herself once again. It had been sheer luck and chance that Choma had run across her after only having been on her own for three or so days and now, she had no idea what she was going to do.

"Yes...y-yes of course, Choma." she murmured, keeping her eyes fixated carefully on the ground. "I'll see to it that I never trouble you or the others again..."

Saying so, she turned to creep quietly out of sight for the last time.

"I hope that you are not implying for even a moment that I've turned my back on you..." Choma said warningly, her tail raising a bit. "I have not told you to leave, I have told you to get yourself sorted. Once you have done that and made the decision on your own to return here, you will, of course, be welcomed."

And then, with grave seriousness and ears pinned back "I -never- turn my back on anyone. Do you understand?"

Before Mire could reply, there was a rustling in the bushes behind Choma. a moment later, Myrl stepped into the early morning dim, dappled by the shadows of trees and bushes.

"Choma, with all due respect..." he began in his usual even-handed voice. "If she is unfit to live with others, she is certainly unfit to be on her own."

Mire's head snapped in the male's direction, her eyes seeming impossibly large in her head. Myrl. What was he doing here...? His eyes found hers briefly, for no more than a second, but it was enough.

water. running water. cool babbling brooks. rippling ponds. deep bottomless oceans

Her mind was suddenly awash with imagery of water of all sizes and depths. It was so odd, that for a moment, Mire had forgotten to be afraid...

"I did not say she was to be on her own." Choma replied coolly, regarding Myrl with a critical eye. "I said perhaps it was best if she was not HERE. It would only be assumed that would mean she was on her own as, not to put too fine a point on it, I doubt anyone would wish to follow her."

Her gaze did not waver as she awaited his answer. If he cared to argue, she was certainly willing to. She, however, would much rather he simply agreed as she was tired and wanted to put this matter behind her and get back to sleep.

"I would." he said without missing a beat, his face betraying nothing but its usual serenity. "And when she has found what she's looking for, I'll return with her." A small smile quirked the corner of his mouth "Perhaps it would be beneficial of me to go, after all....she has spent so much time hiding herself that surely someone must teach her to hunt."

He searched Choma's eyes carefully and calmly for approval.

"You are certainly free to do as you like, Myrl, and if Mire cares to have you...." she said, trailing off to regard the Omega nearby quizzically.

If he wanted to go with her, that was fine...in fact, as he'd said, it would likely be beneficial to her. But she would not be accused of forcing anything more on Mire.

Realizing that the decision had fallen to her whether Myrl would accompany her or not, Mire felt herself slump a bit. She was no good at decision-making...that was why she was not in a position to MAKE decisions. She did much better when someone told her what she was doing and when she was doing it.

"I...well, if he likes..." she murmured in a barely-audible voice, wishing she could simply sink into the soil beneath her paws and vanish for good. She was certain that no other member of the pack was so pathetic that they would need to enlist the help of a pupsitter to ensure they didn't starve to death.

Myrl's lips pulled back in a slight smile. He'd honestly thought that she would refuse his help and that he would end up looking foolish leaping to her defense this way.

Perhaps, he thought with mild hope, her shell COULD be cracked.

Choma's stern gaze wandered between the two for a bit, silently contemplating whether this was a good idea or not. Many alphas would say that losing an omega was not a loss at all...in fact, it might even be considered a blessing. Choma, however, was not most alphas and valued all lives within her pack equally, regardless of rank. She had much more misgivings about sending TWO packmembers out to fend for themselves, but then there was also strength in numbers...

"All right." she said at last. "Then you shall be her keeper, Myrl. Her protector and her provider. I expect that you'll uphold this responsibility well and that you'll return her to us fully intact."

She paused, waiting for any last-minute resignations from Mire or Myrl before stepping out of their path.

"Go now." she said.

At Choma's dismissal, Mire did not waste any more time as she slunk past, head low to the ground and shoulders hunched. Though she did not know the golden alpha to lose her temper much, she did not want to become one of those rare instances.

After the events of this evening, the embrace of the woods' dark vastness was looking quite comforting by comparison.
