Story:
Mbaya'mwesi, or simply Mbaya as she prefers to be called, was born to a superstitious mother within a superstitious pride. She was a pale daughter brought to life and took her first breath under the 'bad moon', and according to pride elders, she would be the doom of them all. At first Mbaya's mother didn't want to believe her precious little girl was some omen of death, but when the bodies of the pride's other little cubs all mysteriously disappeared one by one, night after night, her mother could no longer afford to give her the benefit of the doubt.
The pride blamed Mbaya, and subsequently her mother as well for not killing her the moment she was born, for the disappearances of all the other little cubs. Nevermind that Mbaya herself was just a little one herself, full of happiness and laughter, always dancing around the adults without a care in the world. In the end, her mother was faced with a choice: kill her cub, or leave the pride forever.
Her mother chose to remain with her pride, but could not bring herself to kill her little daughter herself. So, she left Mbaya far from the pride's borders, too young to care for herself, knowing she would soon die of starvation or predation from some other creature. She just couldn't stand to have the blood of her own daughter on her paws. No matter how much Mbaya screamed and cried for her mother to turn around, how much she begged for her mother to come get her, the lioness simply could not let go of her cushy life in the pride.
For days Mbaya cried, lost and alone, and most of all hungry. As luck would have it, a lone lioness who had recently given birth came across the crying cub, and with a heart full of love and kindness she took Mbaya in as her own. She treated her like her own daughter, bathed and fed her, but Mbaya was still hungry. One night, when the lioness had been out hunting, Mbaya took the opportunity to feast. The little cubs were much younger than herself, and were easy prey for the pale cub whose fur was now starting to show flecks of red as her adult coat was coming in.
Mbaya feared her 'new mother' would be angry with her, so she fled in search of her next meal. Relying on the kindness of strangers, Mbaya grew in body as she did in hunger, a ghost or phantom that haunted the savannah at night and terrified young mothers who had gone out on their own to give birth.
In adulthood Mbaya developed the taste for adult lions and lionesses, delighting in their blood and covering her pale fur in that beautiful red color. It was such a color that had attracted her attention and led her to the nightplains pride, as she happened to watch a butcher kill and devour another lion, before rejoining his pride. She wasn't sure if he just didn't see her, or if he was purposefully bringing her back, but she'd never forget the glint in his dark eyes when she first came across the nightplains.
What a shock it was! To learn that not only did this pride not try to chase her off for her odd appetite, they welcomed it. Mbaya, ever thankful for that butcher leading her back to his pride, is as full of mirth and laughter and joy as she had been when she was cub. Oh, what fun it was to play and kill together! Finally, she was home.
