Designers, now that you have dipped your toes in the water of competition, we know you're ready for this challenge. It's a famous one at Project Catwalk, both feared and eagerly awaited. You have to use the below wig and build a look around it for your models! This is a challenge to really let your creativity shine to make your look stand out from the others. We judges want to be surprised! And to be clear, this wig will replace your model's set hair for this challenge, but only this challenge. And only the hair is changing. Topiary Wig Due Date: Feb 1st
Description: Maeve stays true to the punk willingness to take action and becomes the change she wants to see in the world She links arms with other activists, fiercely taking a stand against the destruction of our environment
I myself have attended rallies and protests in support of protecting a 2 million acre region of forests, wetlands, and agriculture called the Ontario Greenbelt--particularly since our current provincial premier is corrupt and had made deals to sell of parts of this protected land to his developer buddies Fashion is inherently political and there are many examples of using statement pieces and clothing (or lack thereof!) to emphasize the cause of a protest As such, I knew right away that I wanted to use the Topiary Wig as the centrepiece of an environmental rally Maeve is no stranger to boldly embracing outlandish fashion choices but this week's challenge compelled me to try and take a subtler (and softer) approach to her usual aesthetic
To embrace a softer aesthetic, Maeve dons a hippie-leaning look drawing influence from the early 1970s She wears double denim in the form of a vest and jeans combo--in contrasting blue tones since I didn't want to fully push the look into the realm of the Canadian Tuxedo I had initially wanted to fully embrace the 70s with some bell-bottoms, but it was not to be! I could only find one pair of bell-bottoms ("Flower Power") and they're far too cartoon-ish to be usable here The jeans and boots that I ended up using are an item ironically named "Wilderness Stompers" She accessorizes with a rope headband, a chunky belt, and additional flowers in her wig. I wanted to supplement its tiny buds with some larger blooms so it has more natural variation and reads as less polka-dot-y To make the look even more cohesive, I was pleased to find that the Withered scheme perfectly matches the wig's existing buds! I chose to accentuate the wig's floral elements by also using the mauve of the Withered scheme in Maeve's cropped floral peasant blouse
As for the setting of this protest, my first instinct was to have Maeve marching down an urban street as I have done at protests Due to the city type background items being generally unsatisfactory, I instead opted to locate Maeve in the heart of the action: out in the natural environment to stop it from imminently being bulldozed! Another surprisingly difficult item to find was the steamroller, which I stumbled across when looking for a sign that Maeve could carry (scrapped in favour of the arm mod) I had wanted a bulldozer, excavator, or even a backhoe--but construction equipment or similar items are not in very high demand on this site Nature backgrounds are much more prevalent and I was surprisingly able to emulate what a (small, agricultural) portion of the landscape of the Ontario Greenbelt looks like
((aside: This hair definitely got a chuckle out of me and, as far as item challenges go, I didn't expect it to be quite this soon LOL!))

Challenge 2: The Higher The Hair... Designer: Crimson-Miz13 Model: Lourdes Status: Complete
Description: Initially I wanted to create a look that would contrast life and new growth with death and decay. However as I was looking around for desolate looking backgrounds I came across one that looks a bit like a ruined overgrown greenhouse. I really like the aesthetic of abandoned buildings being overgrown and reclaimed by nature, and so that's what I ended up aiming for when building this look. I feel like the juxtaposition between life and death in this sort of setting is more diffused and subtle than if I were to put the model in a wasteland and slap a grim reaper into frame. I wanted the look to exemplify the neutral or positive aspects of change, the hope that comes with the idea that the end of one thing only means the beginning of something fresh and new. One of the major challenges I faced with this was trying to create an outfit that might resemble derelict architecture. I wanted to Include more elements that might mimic the look of the dilapidated greenhouse, but excess clutter and imbalance were constant concerns throughout the process. I went through several different variations of vine covered legs and mossy looking leggings with short shorts or skirts before finally settling on the longer and wider skirt as I ended up liking the silhouette it provided. The broken disco ball might seem random but I wanted it to also serve as a sort of "broken things can still be pretty" thing, plus I feel that it adds a little extra dimension to the over all composition. Here are some images that served as my inspiration throughout the process.
Equipped List:
Celebrity Snare Justin Timberlake's Broken Discoball My Little Garden Topiary Wig Cat Burglar's Treasure (Bank Heist!) DokiDoki Memories Astra Pure Radiance Emerald Vault (bokeh) Coy Mirori (tattoos) Limited Time Out! (Smirk) Alitura Figura (Standstill) gnoc dirtier (woodlands) Moth Goth Mystic Bat Catcher Forever Glasses (Ivory) Our Weird Dog (Overgrown) Luna The Kingly Husky (Sparkling Eyes) Pure Starlight Pathguider (Skirt)
Description: I must admit, I was expecting some sort of hair modification challenge when I saw the title, but I did not expect a style as outrageous and amusing as the topiary wig. This is the kind of elaborate hairdo you'd expect to see in a drag show, or perhaps a style worn by Effie Trinket at the Hunger Games. While I was not a big fan of how the wig looks on Arden- or most of the models, to be honest- I do really enjoy a challenge. The look also reminds me of one of my favorite books and movies from my childhood, Anne of Green Gables- especially the time she tried dying her hair and instead of a glorious raven black, it turned mossy green.
Poor Arden must surely be embarrassed to be seen in public with such ridiculous hair. So mortified, in fact, that she would rather disappear into the bushes rather than be caught in this ridiculous 'do. So for this challenge, I chose to create an elegant camouflaged look. I found a dress and some floral accessories that match the wig surprisingly well, while also doubling as improvised camouflage that might work for hiding from the other ladies at a vintage garden party. That is, unless she hears somebody talking smack about her fashion sense, then she's gonna have some words with them...
Obviously, the topiary wig did not have nearly enough flowers yet, so naturally I had to add some more in the form of a floral crown and halo. The first thing I found was the perfect background to camouflage the mortified model. Then I found a lovely coordinating floral top, and searched through dozens of arm items to find the perfect sleeves. Paired with a flowing skirt, the perfect matching floral bag, and a floral-patterned sheer overskirt, I finished the main outfit with elegant slippers and actual flower vines trailing down her legs. She still needed more flowers so I found matching choker and earrings and additional windblown roses. As usual, I put on a touch of extra makeup, and even her eyebrows have been tweezed to match both the wig and her elegant slanted eyes.
Additional Note: After the recent announcement, which is similar to advice the judges have given in previous cycles, yes- I do post the equip list intentionally. I always go out of my way to find different items that coordinate but are not part of the same original sets even if they do have similar color schemes, and layer multiple items to create one complex element (like the hair decorations in the previous challenge.) I also try to achieve a look that works decently in seated and backward poses whenever possible, although if I have an amazing forward standing look that doesn't work so well in the other poses, I'm perfectly willing to select one pose and crop out the rest.

Challenge #2: The Higher The Hair Model: Kimber Prompt: Designers, now that you have dipped your toes in the water of competition, we know you're ready for this challenge.
The Look:
Description: Well, I was expecting some sorta curve ball challenge, but this wig had me chuckling and scratching my head! Kimber and I had a tough time finding a style that really worked, and after struggling harder than I care to admit to make a Strawberry sorta look, we switched it up to a more mystical Forest Nymph style! Remembering Kimbers beautiful red hair (currently tucked away under some topiary) I wanted to try to go for a seductive Nymph. We went for some more sheer looking clothing to create a more sexual and alluring vibe, with a wood textured corset to hold it together. I added some vines snaking along her clothes and body, which as a Nymph, she can also control to entangle her prey (peep the bones behind her) I admit, I feel like something is missing, but every time I tried adding more the look felt to cluttered and forced. I didnt want to add anything to her head, worried it would distract from the main focus of the current challenge. But I am quite happy with the look none the less!
Kimber is Wearing:
Spring Nymph (Ive Wrap) Topiary Wig Some Bunny To Love (Eyes) Fall Nymph (Bark Corset) Woodland Adored Persephone (Spring) The Season of White (Arms) Cherubella (Legs) Woodland Elf Reflection (BG) kiss and tell (Coral) Blooming Materra (Mother's Dress) Blooming Hallowed Serenade
Designers Note:
Oh boy, seeing the critique from the last challenge admittedly has me sweating a bit, but I feel confident! I know I can put together really decent looks, but man, this hair really put me through the wringer sweatdrop
I have always been absolutely in love with Greek Mythology. So once I saw Priya with her new wig I knew that she needed to be Gaia, Goddess of Earth and even seen as the goddess of creation. I wanted to keep the mood and the ambiance of her look as if she was creating the world and nurturing it, guiding her vision through the land—creatures of all types to adore her presence and find solace in her. Priya's already soft eyes and smile had really helped personify the image in my mind.
For the look itself, I was happy to stumble upon this crown early and just amused that it wrapped perfectly to the topiary on her head. I play with elements like waterfalls, flowerbeds, and fields. Nothing stuck much like the combo of items I finished with. I can't say I had much trouble with this one as I already knew the sense of what I was looking for. The hardest part was the back and foreground. Wanting to create the perfect scene. Oh, and finding a proper deer. I want just 1, but the balance was set off many times by the options available. I'm very glad to have the 2 fawns as it gives curiosity to Gaia/Priya and more life through their interaction.
I hope you find love in her as much as I do!

Challenge #2: The Higher The Hair... Designer: actualdeerooze Model: Zanna Status: In Bloom (finished!)
Worms weave a ring where fairies square dance Queens and kings fairies weave wigs with eyelash Trance music makes the fairies dance - Fairy Paradise by Cocorosie
About This Look: I wanted to create a scene of a nature witch greeting adventurers into her garden; allowing them a reprise from their travels and maybe to strike a deal in exchange for something powerful.
I wanted to not highlight the outfit as much - as the hair is the star of the show, so I ended up layering the scooped sugarflake top with the valkyre skirt and boot combo. While I love using an overall color scheme for my avatars I do not want to rely on it too much and ended up only using one or two matching pieces to create some kind of cohesion.
What really ended up mattering here is the layering of the scenery and background to help craft the story and highlight the wig itself! Being able to mix the trellis and sunny afternoon for the dappled sunlight, it gives a wonderful splash of color without washing it out entirely with a filter except in the back, as it gives a bloom of light! It was a little hard to not create something with obtuse layers and intense colors, but being able to shape the landscape felt like a great way to learn about other types of nature themed items gaia has! I am giving a specific shout out to this guide thread that helped me find a few items to piece it all together.
What is Zanna Wearing?:

Challenge #2: The Higher The Hair... Designer: Eziara Model: Imani Outfit Title: Rebirth of Our Inner Sun Submission Status: Complete
☀️ Time begins as the sun does;We grow and return to our origins... 🦋
Our hair grows as long as we live. Thus, a hair made of greenery speaks of one's desire to become a part of the natural world physically. As someone who is an amateur naturalist, I empathize with this thought. So, I take this concept and visualize Imani as a representation of the harmony between humanity and nature.
Imani's look is greatly inspired by the Solarpunk movement, Afrofuturism, and the African Fashion Week. I loved how these three mentioned are great at creating iconic vibrant styles + relevant! Imani's dark looks are paired now with bright oranges and greens, a classic pairing in African fashion. I wanted Imani to feel as if she's radiating like the Sun. She spots a smidge of healthy glow on her cheeks, her translucent sash surrounds her like a halo... I also chose her green gown because of its shimmering material, which goes well with the orange beaded necklace embellishments! Altogether, these fashion choices makes Imani look like she's right at home with the trees in the forest background.
Imani in my personal taste has an ongoing theme with flowers. But now, flowers transition into butterflies. I place a few strategic butterflies here and there (particularly the glowing swirls and lines around Imani are not actually butterflies, but visually they look almost like one!). They represent the optimism of the Solarpunk and Afrofuturism: as humans continue to live on this Earth, the Earth evolves along us. Like a rebirth. I hope this look will convey that transition of humanity melding with the Earth, becoming something new and better.

A Marvel in Marble
She stands amongst flowers and fountains, the afternoon light setting aglow pale flesh and glimmering cloth. She holds a pose with poised-perfect stillness, almost as if she herself was carved from stone... ⚜
Topiary is considered a form of "living sculpture," and has been a fixture in numerous eras of manicured European gardens since Ancient Rome. Thinking along these historical lines, I wanted to transform Pearl into a different sort of living sculpture, inspired by another iconic form of art popularized in ancient civilization and found in gardens throughout time: a marble statue.
From old masters like Bernini to contemporary greats like Luo Li Rong, the allure of these artworks can be found in the rendering of fine fabrics that contour the body and contrapposto posing that gives the illusion of movement. I tried to capture that sort of sensuality with this combination of items, creating a more modern romantic couture gown composed of layers and layers of sheer, drape-y fabrics that highlight Pearl's feminine form. I'm particularly obsessed with the layer over her exposed leg; so fine it's nearly invisible aside from a few scattered embellishments that sparkle like flecks of mica in the sunlight, tying in with her shimmery, marble-like makeup look that perfectly accentuates her glimmering grey eyes.
To tie in with the topiary wig and garden setting, I added a few flowery details throughout her outfit. I especially love how the placement of the rose belt brings the eye right to the curve of her hip, and how the scattered petals bring in another pop of color also found in the petite pink blooms of the bush on her head.

Challenge #2: The Higher the Hair... Designer: lucifer eats pizza Model: Jolene Status:WIP complete (jan 30)
The title:With flaming locks of...Topiary Green hair
The lewk: For this look, even before the actual challenge was announced I knew I HAD to do a Dolly Parton look. She is famously known for having said "the higher the hair the closer to God" and so when I saw "higher the hair" that was all I could think. On top of that, my model is Jolene, and of course that's my go to karaoke song.
I had originally wanted to do a pink cowgirl look, because that's how I most commonly think of Dolly, in sequin pink cowgirl. Unfortunately I couldn't seem to find a hat that fit the vibe that didn't cover up most (or all) of the topiary wig (which I did not want to do).
So instead I have gone for her bunny look, but tied in her Tennessee roots by adding a bit of country. I, of course, had to honor Dolly's proportions, so I had to find Jolene the right chest/bunny suit combo without falling into the trap of just using Bunny Vibes. Which was difficult, but then once I had fallen into what I wanted to use (with the summer fundraising and risky bunny suit combo) I had trouble figuring out what else to pair together.
Trying to find earrings was a huge ordeal because I wanted butterfly earrings, but there...aren't any? Maybe I just couldn't find them. Anyways, I found other ways to include butterflies in the design.
Jolene is standing with books, in the Tennessee mountains, in reference to Dolly Parton's philanthropy through which she donates millions of books to children across the United States, Canada, the UK, Australia and Ireland.
Challenge: #2 The Higher the Hair... Designer: Ananemain Model: Cressida Status: Complete
A Gaian Pastoral
About: When I first approached the topiary wig, I was stumped. I looked at it from every angle, but I couldn't quite figure out how to make it work in a look that would feel both fresh and modern. It wasn't until I started messing around with layering items over it that the wig truly came alive.
I realized a few well-placed flowers would help ease the harsh transition line from the wig to the face and make the entire piece feel more natural. Once I had the ideal pieces (ones that would highlight the wig but not hide it), the look truly gelled. I honestly think I've Stockholm Syndomed myself into liking the thing...
For the rest of the look, I found inspiration in pastoral art, especially pastoral operas. These idealize country living and focus on the simplicity and beauty of rural life. I intentionally kept the background minimal, both to suggest the wash of colors you might find in an expressionist painting and to help the outfit itself shine.
I spent longer than I care to admit perfecting the bottom of the outfit. Finding a green skirt that was voluminous enough and the right shade of green took lots of searching and clicking and searching and clicking. It felt like the good ol' TekTek days where you had to spend ages simply trying to find the same shade as this item or that. You can imagine my joy when I finally stumbled upon the Charmed Rose skirt! I completed the look by balancing three other skirts underneath to add volume and opacity. Overall, I'm quite happy with it.
I picture Cressida on a brightly lit stage, preparing to enrapture the audience with a lively aria from Acis and Galatea, her head holding steady as she balances the impressive and weighty wig. I believe her outfit is worthy of her debut as an unforgettable ingenue.
Challenge 2: The Higher The Hair Designer: supersunshine506 Model: Marina Status: Complete
Title: Hedge Fund Hunie Description:
This "self-made millionaire" has a dark secret: it isn't the landscaping nonprofit that pays her salary.
Marina is acting as what many perceive to be a highly successful CEO of a landscaping nonprofit targeted at increasing curb appeal, and subsequently property values, in underprivileged neighborhoods. The media sings her praises as she touts how her self-made fortune is a direct result of generosity and dedication, but the truth is, the money comes from her regular dividends. After receiving a lump sum settlement in a lawsuit, she moved the majority of her assets into a risky hedge fund that profits off of child labor markets, and the payout has so far outpaced what she makes running charity events. One day her secret revenue stream will collapse and her private investments will come into the public eye, but in the meantime, it never hurts to keep a bit in savings.
When I think business, I think clean and simple and wanted to carry that into the design. The lines are crisp and professional; there isn't much clutter, but some lavish details like the earing and adorned purse hint at the character's nature. The hair paired with the outfit embodies what I imagine the character would wear to a fundraising or PR event as a way of embodying the brand of the landscaping nonprofit, and juxtaposing this to the setting highlights just how rapidly she moves from the public eye to her private motivations after one such event.
Challenge #2: The Higher the Hair Designer: torimani Model: Harper
🌱 La Floray El Agua 🌊
About the Look:
Water and earth go together like yin and yang, don’t they? So because of this, I wanted to incorporate an aquatic plant theme to this entry. I named this entry “La Flora y El Agua” because in Spanish, this means “the flowers and the water” and I wanted Harper to look like a traditional Spanish dancer with her outfit, since in certain indigenous Spanish speaking cultures there’s a legend about water goddesses and how they flow and dance! Harper seems like she has an elegant side too, which influenced my decision to have her wearing a dress because it gives the idea of true royalty, like bowing in her presence, as we all should bow to Mother Nature.
I chose blue and green with a splash (pun unintended!) of coral because of the aquatic and plant-like aspects, and I wanted to add a splash of water so Harper seems like she’s flowing WITH the plants. I also wanted to have Harper holding fish as well, because she would naturally love all forms of life, especially sea life. I wanted to include a waterfall background because waterfalls incorporate both plant life and water, as they usually are seen near forests. I’m very happy with this design overall, it makes me want to dance with the water and the plants! Not to mention, the main reason I thought about incorporating water is because I’m a Pisces, so naturally I’m gonna think about fish and water!
gaia_sakura━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ۞Designer: ThoughtsofaDame ۞Model: Naomi ۞Status: Complete ۞ Heavy Floral Dream ۞ A warm haze surrounds you thick and with the scent of flowers. The sweet heavy scent lures you deeper the haze seems to set you at easy and you begin to hear a melody drawing you. you come upon her playing her harp the scent of roses and something more coming straight from her. She's enchanting and in this dreamy state you wonder how did I get here?
It took me so time to pull this look together. I'll be honest the hair was goofy and I just wasn't sure what to do to make it look fashion. I originally had a Bridal veil on the hair but it altered the shape of the hair so taking some advice I scrapped it. Now she was less of a bride and more of somekind of garden siren. A force of nature drawing towards her with floral smells and musical bliss. The environment feeling dreamlike. I liked the filter (I am Sprightly Flowers) because it was green on bottom with pink on top which graded the lighting so well while making it look heavy and thick like summer clinging to you but in a pleasurable kind of way.
I started with Dusk Rose and White as my color scheme to pair with Naomi's natural lip color. I added Sakura pink and Kokeshi red accents for color variety and use the greens in the background and foreground items to complement the Hair. originally I wanted more green in her outfit but with very few matching green options I decided to de-center green from the model herself.
I actually did not use additional make up on Naomi this time, but The Art Nouveau Nasturtium crown has chains which hang over her eyes and look like a sparkle shadow which makes her gaze fall intensely on you without changing her eyes! The upper crown is made from a few more items to add color and depth with more floral elements. I feel as if this highlights the hair which really is the whole point of the look.
Congratulations designers on completing the second challenge! You all stepped up your game and impressed us, and we know you're going to continue to impress us. I want to caution everyone on the use of filters. We all know they can enhance a look but they can also ruin a look. At the end of the day this is a fashion competition, and the judges have to be able to see the look. If filters or other added details block out ability to do that? It will cost you points. Just a word to the wise.
Picaru — Pearl • The words ethereal, gorgeous, and breath taking were all thrown around for this look, the judges were blown away. • Biggest/only thing that really distracted the judges from a perfect score were the lillies of the valley at the front, they felt just a little too big and bold.
Eziara — Imani • We're obsessed with the colors, you wrote an excellent description, and just really impressed us over all!! • The make up was a drawback for one judge, and another didn't really like the obscuring of the face, even though we appreciate it was a style choice.
wishflower — Maeve • You got a near perfect score for your description, it was so good and it made one judge a believer in the look where she hadn't been before. • The background just didn't really work out well, between the colors or just too many details, it just didn't work well for us.
Ananemain — Cressida • The judges are SO impressed by your growth this week and how you listened to the feedback. Stronger look, stronger description, stronger entry. Kudos! • The pink was a little too concentrated on the middle and could have been extended to the bottom.
ThoughtsofaDame — Naomi • This is a near perfect way to use a filter, the judges were impressed and the judges over all really liked this look. • There was a little too much white in the look.
actualdeerooze — Zanna • Another beautiful entry, you clearly know what looks good on Zanna already and the wig is wonderfully embraced. • The biggest draw back this time was the description, it felt like an over correction from the first one, don't be afraid to add more details!
torimani — Harper • Good job listening to and growing from last week's criticism, you got high points for creativity and we really liked the water! • The biggest complaint was the fish/coral, we wanted to see more of it - maybe up near her head?
NaturallyPragmaticChimera — Arden • It was nice to see an unexpected color scheme chosen, and Arden looks great in it. This was also one of the stronger descriptions this week! • Ultimately the head piece was both too obscured and stook out too much. In the description you talked about Arden blending into the bushes, but then everything was in the purple scheme and it just made us hyper aware of where the green she was trying to hide was at.
lucifer eats pizza — Jolene • One of the judges raved about this look and loved the weirdness, and we all liked the description and the inspiration. • Over all the majority of us just didn't really like the look. The wig didn't really connect, and there were colors that didn't work. A great idea, just mixed reception on the execution.
Sleepy Luna Moth — Kimber • Another strong look, I love seeing the wig be embraced. Really good make up and shading/shadow choices. • Give us more why in your description, and the foreground blended a bit too much with the background for some judges.
Kr-E — Priya • The judges all really liked the idea of this entry, and the inspiration of mother earth/gaia, it really embraces the wig and you clearly put a lot of thought into it. • Judges all felt like there was just too much going on at the end of the day, the red flower was particularly distracting.
Crimson-Miz13 — Lourdes • Description was vastly improved, and the outfit is cute. • The judges just hated the shadow filter. So so so much. It didn't add anything and it made it too hard to properly see the look. Ultimately that was the detail that we just couldn't get over.
supersunshine506 — Marina • This was creative and unexpected, and the description was strong and saved you at the end of the day. • The filter almost got you sent home. I hope every designer understands this filter is just about the worst thing the judges have ever seen. It makes it so so hard to see the details. And what we could see...just didn't really connect to make sense.
