Kihone looked back to the man who was listening to him and Izanagi trying to have a private mumbling while the grown ups squabbled. His inquiry about a mattress was very oddly worded and toned given the situation, "Yeaa... that's where I sleep, usually." Such an odd man, but he could see why Izanagi was getting bothered by him. What he couldn't understand was why Reika was so- oh. Her following question made sense of things. She had already determined the man to be a foe and readied her kunai for battle. Kihone was prepared to fight for either Izanagi or Reika if things got dicey. They did. Both boys could feel the tension radiating from Reika right up until Kihone realized that Albino-san vanished. The next thing Kihone saw was a blurring sheathed sword striking Reika and instantly laying her out in the sand.
To go from introducing someone as your protector and savior to watching them get laid out by a single attack was a shock, to say the least. Girls get crazier and crazier the older I get. Kihone's mouth fell agape for a split moment before closing into a tense frown as his teal eyes followed the sword that had been tossed up. The same sword that hit big sis and seemed to have KO'd her in an instant. As far as Kihone was concerned, Reika was an important an irreplaceable friend to be cherished, and friends didn't just watch friends lose fights. His left hand was held up at an angle toward the sword and it would find itself not only magnetically suspended in the air before it could return to its expecting owner; in fact, the sword was quickly repelled up and far away instead.
You two look tense. The eerily nonchalant remark prompted Kihone's expression to shift from the gentle, wary youth back into that of a fierce warrior discovered in the ruins. He staggered back only half a step as he felt a wave of rejuvenation mend his bruised body and ribs; Kihone was thankful for this, but was still miffed about how Reika was treated by this weirdo. Relax, I'm here to deal with the bandits. The man said as if to reassure them, and he waited for his sword to fall into place like it were something he'd practiced doing for some reason. It probably would have been cool if his sword returned to him. "Gee, thanks mister..." Kiho gave a chiding hum to his retort, waiting for the moment Seijun would look up for his missing weapon; likely unaware that the sword's blade was deconstructing into metal dust with every passing second. If he looked up, Kihone was going to take that opportunity to counter. Kihone had gotten really good with his raiton chakra control now, and he wasn't going to sit idly by while their savior was thrashed. His body would suddenly unleash a blindingly bright veridian light, threatening to blind Seijun if he looked in the direction of the emerald bolt of lighting that Kihone transformed into. If his plucky strategy had any merit, he would slam into the albino swordsman's and reappear behind him. "Albino-san, please don't pick on my friends... or else!" Kihone had every reason to believe this probably wouldn't work; Scar-cheek totally dodged this exact gambit last night. Kihone readily held the handle of his own sheathed katana, barely keeping it from digging into the sand at his heels due to his short stature. At the very least, a disintegrated blade would make his point about standing up for his friends. Kihone could put it back together afterward... probably.

[ Bloodline ] | [ Scholar ] | [ Chakra: 170/600 ] | [ Stamina: 500/500 ] Reika did not hesitate. The man was a threat. His mocking tone, his careless movements, all of it felt like a calculated distraction. She refused to be deceived. No signs of life stirred among the ruined village, and in her tunnel vision, only one path remained. Her chakra surged, lashing outward in a violent burst before the man had fully disappeared from sight. She braced herself, every muscle taut, prepared for an attack from any direction. Then, boom! A strike landed before she could react. The force was devastating. Her vision blurred, her body nearly crumpling under the sheer impact. Did I black out? She couldn’t tell. But before she could spiral into unconsciousness, sensation returned. She felt fingertips tapping against her head, followed by a voice dripping with amusement.
"Girls get crazier and crazier the older I get..." Any normal person would have taken the loss. Stepped back. Reevaluated. Reika wasn’t like that. A surge of strength flooded her limbs as she forced her mind to focus, centering herself in the chaos. She could hear them—Kihone’s voice, the certainty in his tone. The boys would fight, just as they had before. But she wouldn’t let another enemy slip away. Not again. Her fingers twitched against the sand, and in the next breath, her chakra surged downward. The ground trembled. The spikes erupted, jagged spears of earth lunging toward the man with lethal precision to impale him from various directions. “Die!” she screamed, her voice raw, merging with the thunderous crack of stone splitting through the air.
Reika's tunnel vision was too far gone to see Kihone, or his attack. Would she hit him with the numerous earthen spikes too?!

Izanagi felt more a fool than he had when the man mocked him. This "Albino-San" as Kiho would coin him, was by all means infuriating to Izanagi. Perhaps it wasn't merely because of his casual insults, his mocking of the mattress and their poverty gave Izanagi flashbacks to a time when traveling merchants and nobles passed through, with the same snide tones that he spoke with. While Izanagi processed this memory, it seemed his focus shifted for a second too long. The tension in the air seemed to become palpable. The man's tones seeped of sarcasm and condescension.
Thump-Thump. Thump-Thump. Thump-Thump.
Nagi's heartbeat seemed to carry a strange strength. His eyes winced as the surroundings seemed to become terribly overwhelming to him, as though his senses had become hypersensitive all at once. He blinked, just before Albino-San vanished. When he opened his eyes his sight had been altered somehow. He could see Seijun before him, Reika beside him, Kiho behind him, as well as a strange system of lines that glowed beneath their skin?! But Albino-San's lines seemed to be much stronger and actively doing...something. Then, Izanagi saw him vanish! But as soon as he vanished, the reemergence of the man only a breath away from Reika who was beside him would come to view. Nagi's eyes shifted to the man's location. To the others, a small segment of veins would have bulged on the sides of the boy's face nearest his eyes, his violet eyes illuminated with an afterglow as his head turned to face the man, nearly seeing what was happening with the aid of whatever he was seeing. "Reik-" He started to shout before the girl would be slammed over the head with the sheathed sword of the man. Nagi raised his arm up to shield himself from the tremor of force he felt that sent sand flying outward from the impact. "N-no way" he thought to himself. His focus waned, his vision blurred. The enhanced sight he had experienced for a split moment had faded with the focus on anything besides watching the man.
As though the man sensed the rising tension in the air, he stepped to the boys in an instant that Izanagi wouldn't see and speak. He confirmed, they were tense. Nothing Nagi didn't already know. How could they not be. This man was by far stronger than the bandit they'd faced in the desert. Even stronger than Reika. What could they even do? Another Thump, this time from the open handed thwack of the man's hand on his chest. Izanagi's skin crawled for a moment as the healing chakra pulsed through his body in an instant. The ache and pains he'd felt, the fatigue, the blisters, all of it seemed to melt off of him in an instant. "Itttccchyyy"he groaned as he stumbled backward from the attack, the chakra effect having some strange side effect on his senses.
It was during that stumble that Nagi's sight landed on Reika once again. This man had just cracked her over the head with a merciless strike and rejuvanated the boys in an instant. He thought Reika was pretty strong considering what she'd done with the oasis, but now she was out like a lig-
No she wasn't. Nagi's eyes began to blur again, the supernatural sight he'd experienced moments before fading back into existance for a moment. He'd seen the twitch of her hand, the flaring of the lines beneath her skin. It was similar to what he'd just witnessed Albino-san do before he vanished. His vision, which seemed to be expanding once more caught that Kiho in his defiant action had placed himself right in the path of Reika's attack. "Kiho!" Nagi howled in a moment of realization of what was about to happen. Nagi knew that whatever was coming was gonna be big, the lines in Reika were extra bright. Something bad was coming. Izanagi's feet began to carry him forward before he had a moment to think about it.' Faster....Faster...Gotta move faster than anything!'Nagi thought to himself. ' I have chakra now! I can do this! ' he continued. It had to be the same speed that Albino-san moved. That's what he needed. The lines of light that glowed were in his feet....maybe that was something....chakra? he thought for a moment. In an effort to mirror the man's actions, he would channel the chakra in his body through his feet in a similar manner to what he'd done to climb trees. This time though, he forced it out at a significantly higher rate, less controlled. From the time his first stride was coming to a close, body would react. The moment his foot would crunch against the sand, the same blinding speed that Seijun had vanished with would carry Izanagi to Kihone's side where he would tackle him with his full weight and explode forward with the same speed once more, only to reappear almost thirty feet away from the rising earthen spikes that would have easily slain his brother.
Nagi was panting hard as the two would tumble through the sand from the high speed movement. Nagi's sight had dulled once more, an ability he didn't understand or command at will yet. But he knew he'd been able to see and move fast enough to save Kiho's life just now. Reika had told them they were both shinobi now, right? Time to act like it. "You okay, Kiho? That was super close. You almost got caught in the attack!"

Seijun caught the retort and gave a slow, approving nod. “Mhm. That’s yours,” he murmured, his voice laced with teasing amusement as he tapped Reika lightly, flashing them a lazy smile. His breath slowed, deep and deliberate, as his attention flicked toward Reika stirring. His grin widened slightly. She’s already moving? Heh, knew she could do it. With a casual tap to her head, his fingers pulsed with healing chakra before he abruptly pushed off, dashing back just as Kihone began to glow. The moment their energy surged, Seijun’s smile turned knowing, his eyes closing as if savoring the moment. Then the rumble started.
The crackling of lightning split the air, a chorus of energy surging just ahead of him. The earth trembled beneath his feet, shifting, reshaping. Then, the lightning changed course—unexpected, unpredictable, and fun. Seijun laughed, almost gleeful. “That’s the spirit, everyone!” he called out, his voice electric with excitement. In the next instant, his chakra flared, pumping out as one unison wave after another. With a sharp push off his back foot, he twisted his body—momentum carrying him into a devastating roundhouse kick. The moment his leg met the rising earth spears, one by one, the ground shattered, chunks of stone crumbling into dust. The dust whipped around him as he spun and as he finished the full rotation, he'd drop fluidly into a crouch, eyes glinting with unrestrained thrill behind his closed eyelids.
He didn’t stop. His chakra pulsed again, not as explosive but precise, measured. In a seamless motion, he launched himself backward, body angling toward the sound of electricity. His intent was simple—just a small test. He let his back collide into it, a low-power move, but enough to gauge reflexes. Because knowing someone’s strength was different from feeling it firsthand. And Seijun? He liked to feel it.

Amidst his unraveling stratagem, Kihone heard his name called out by Izanagi with dire urgency just before he was torn from his trajectory to collide with their opponent. Then a series of rock spikes exploded out of the ground, threatening both him and the albino guy at once. In that moment, he considered just bouncing off them in his lightning form, but his brother's warning cry came with a surprising rise to action. Kiho barely managed to disperse his paltry raiton techniques to limit their effect on Nagi as they tumbled down the back side of an adjacent dune. "H-how did you catch up so fast?" He gasped at first then rolled over to see what was happening with Seijun and Reika. Seijun had very simply assumed a stance as he awaited the next volley of attacks from their group. "We're seriously outclassed. Ugh..." He was starting to regret his impulsiveness, but now wasn't the time for regret. Kihone mumbled to Nagi in hopes that only he'd hear, "He didn't attack back, so he's definitely messing with us. I've got his sword, but I dunno if he actually needs it to fight us. Ama-nee doesn't seem like she's gotten serious though. Maybe we can pull this off if we're smart about it?" He looked to his brother for any kind of assurance or at least that usual plucky never-die strength that Izanagi always seemed to have in reserve, save for last night's enlightening trials.
Kihone ducked behind the dune again so that Seijun wouldn't see him and kept his brain working hard for any kind of useful idea. "I can probably only distract this guy... at best. If Reika goes down again, we definitely lose, Nagi." After all their training and hard work to survive the ruins, it would be unfortunate to taste defeat the very next day. He could try attacking from underground, but none of the tactics used against Scar-cheek seemed like they'd be effective here. He thought back to how the man just kicked all those rocks to pieces, probably because they weren't threatening. The light bulb was turning on as he considered even the most strange of ideas to slow this guy down for Reika to fight. "I need a distraction, but we'll just get in the way out there. Lets see if I can pull this off..." Kihone wove a string of hand seals for a short while, trying to get it as close to as his good, but young memory could recall. "Bunshin!" He finished on an ox hand seal as a small plume of smoke came and went in a poof, revealing a clone of himself also laying against the dune on the other side of him from Izanagi. Even Kiho was impressed with himself, although he wouldn't point out that its feet and hands were just a little disproportionate; the hands were a bit too small and feet a little too large. Not bad for a first try, though. Right after this spontaneous test he took a deep breath and tried again, but this time with more chakra and this time some of the earth power he learned to use last night. "C'mon..." Once again, he ended on an ox hand seal, and sand on the other side of the basic, intangible clone rose up with a soft hiss until it took a barely corporeal form at all. "Eh... not quite?" Although, it did seem functional he was hoping for an even more solid clone than these two for his idea. Once more, he adjusted his chakra control and tweaked his hand seals just a bit more as he used more doton chakra. Instead of ending on an ox hand seal, he tried to finish it with a hare seal and the sand responded in kind. This time, it packed itself tightly until it was in fact as hard as rock as it formed between the other two Kihone clones. He sighed, "Finally!" He could feel the sweat dripping down his neck. It wasn't because of the desert's afternoon heat either. He was using a lot of chakra all of the sudden again, and it wouldn't last at this rate. Kihone gave his clones a nod and all three took off in different directions over and around either side of the dune as they rushed at Seijun from multiple angles while he'd be hopefully engaged with Reika. The dust and rock clones would attempt to grab onto Seijun's legs if they could get close enough, the illusory one leveling an incorporeal uppercut at his face.

[ Bloodline ] | [ Scholar ] | [ Chakra: 190/600 ] | [ Stamina: 500/500 ] Reika’s breath hitched as the man unraveled her technique with an almost effortless grace. It was as if her attack had meant nothing. The ease with which he dismissed it only fanned the inferno burning inside her. A scream tore from her throat, raw with fury directed at no one. "AAARRRGGGHHHAAAAAAHHHHHH" Both hands thrust forward, fingers curling with violent intent. Then she saw it. His eyes were closed. Is he mocking me? Does he think I'm weak?! Her rage surged. I’ll show you weak.
Chakra pulsed through her body, crackling like a storm within her. The earth trembled beneath her feet, and from the sand, thick wooden tendrils erupted, twisting together to form the elongated shape of a dragon. Its body coiled and stretched, towering as if it carried the weight of her fury itself. She sent it forward, with incredible speed, every fiber of her being screaming for destruction. It wasn’t just an attack, it was an execution. She saw only Seijun, and she would not stop until he was nothing more than a lifeless heap in the sand. Her world shrank around her even more than it already had. The fire in her mind burned so hot, so blinding, that she failed to see anything beyond him. She didn’t hear the shifting of the dunes, didn’t register the voices around her.
The past was alive in her veins, the pain, the loss. It consumed her. There was no Seijun, no battle. There was only vengeance.
Crawling back to his feet, Nagi looked to Kiho. " I just did it like albino-san?" he said, unsure if there was a trick. He'd just copied what he'd seen. It was a high speed movement, but not totally lost on him, somehow. He looked to Kiho with a concerned expression when he was strategizing. "Uh. Kiho. I don't think that guy is tryin to do anything bad here. I don't think he should'a hit Reika....but look."he said, gesturing twoards her as her rage exploded into the wooden tendrils." She's acting like Koroto-Nii does when he has to deal with the things that scare him..." he paused, sighed, looking at the clone that Kiho made." Maaaan. I dunno what to do here." He screamed to the heavens, plopping down in a cross legged position and furiously rubbing his head in frustration.

Things didn’t go as Seijun predicted. His leap met nothing but open air. His back never encountered resistance, no bodies bracing for impact. Instead, the moment his feet touched the sand, he let out another slow, exasperated sigh. His sharp gaze lifted from his eyelids, landing on the sand with no resistance as the redhead continued to unravel before his eyes. “Sorry, my dear,” he murmured, his voice devoid of its usual playfulness. His eyes narrowed, and in that instant, the shift in his demeanor was undeniable. The man who had been toying with them was gone. In his place stood only the warrior, his chakra ceasing its pulsations, his presence sharpened like a blade drawn from its sheath.
He had been having fun with them- pushing, testing, observing— but this girl… she carried more than just skill or talent. She carried baggage. More than he'd been informed of, more than she could bear on her own. And now, she was drowning in it. Her scream cut through the air, raw and unrestrained, as the ground trembled beneath the weight of her fury. From her hands, a massive wooden dragon burst forth, twisting into existence with a force that split the earth. It was no ordinary creation. The sheer density of chakra within it was suffocating, a testament to her strength even in her frenzied state.
Seijun’s left hand moved with purpose, his fingers flicking ever so slightly. In a flash, a black and gold sheathed katana materialized at his side. He exhaled as his grip tightened around its hilt. "I’m sorry for putting so much mental stress on you... I didn't know." His words were spoken softly, yet they carried an undeniable weight. But this wasn’t a moment for soothing words alone— this was a moment for action. Seijun lowered his stance, his muscles coiling like a predator preparing to strike. Then, in the span of a breath, his right arm vanished.
To the untrained eye, there was no movement, only the sound— a single step forward, the unmistakable ring of a blade slicing through the air, and the deafening crack of wood splitting apart. The dragon never stood a chance. Its body split cleanly down the middle, its immense form momentarily suspended in stillness before its halves crumbled into lifeless timber. Wood-style creations stop moving when their forms are broken. The knowledge echoed in Seijun’s mind, though he hardly needed the reminder. The strike had been instinctual, as effortless as breathing. Before the remnants of the dragon even hit the sand, his blade was already back in its sheath, held firm in his left hand, as if it had never been drawn at all.
He exhaled slowly, shifting his gaze back to the girl before him. “I am a shinobi sent to put down the bandits in this area.” His voice was calm but unyielding, slicing through the tension like his blade had through the dragon. “I am not your enemy.” But despite his words, his demeanor did not soften. He remained as serious as the bloodlust lingering in his eyes— the same eyes that had seen countless lives extinguished, some for duty, others for his own agendas. He had no fear, no hesitation. He had walked through death too many times to waver now.
His grip on the sheath loosened as he took a step forward. His words, now more deliberate, cut deeper than any blade ever could. "Stand down, Reika." The silence that followed was deafening. "Your clan is gone, but you're their only remaining hope in this world. Don't throw that away." There was no mockery, no condescension. Just the brutal, unfiltered truth. A truth that weighed more than any battle, more than any loss.
Seijun watched her carefully, his presence unshakable. This wasn’t about dominance. This wasn’t about power. This was about Reika. And whether or not she would allow herself to break— or rise.
Kihone's clones dashed over and down the dune, only to witness a huge dragon made of wood burst forth from Reika. This alone gave the trio of clones pause from their original objective to detain and distract Seijun. That pause then resulted in them witnessing an even more amazing feat as the man summoned another sword out of thin air and halved the dragon faster than the eye could track. The illusory clone poofed with his mouth agape while the two earth-style clones just crumbled back into the sand which they came from.
Meanwhile, Kiho's strategizing was already in the muck as he was trying to now also make sense of how Izanagi figured out how to move so fast so soon. 'He could barely keep up in their tree climbing game earlier, but okay... a level up is still good.' It was a technique he'd definitely want to learn sooner than later, probably. He pulled himself up to sitting on his knees as he considered what Izanagi also said about Koro-nii's scarisodes being similar to how Reika was acting. "Good think Koro-nii doesn't have Ama-nee's powers, huh Nagi?" He sighed, acknowledging that he was in the wrong this time and with a flick of his hand he returned the magneticaly suspended, metal sand filled scabbard of a sword back to Seijun. It would land in the sand a couple feet behind him, sticking upright out of the dune.
Kihone patted his brother on the shoulder then stood up the rest of the way and faced the older pair that was some thirty or so feet away, maybe more. They were definitely too far away to hear the calm but tense shift in Seijun's demeanor or anything he said to their mentor. Regardless, he cupped his hands around his mouth to help amplify his voice to any measure and shouted to Reika, hoping to get through to her somehow, "AMA-NEESAMAAAAAAA! THAT GUY IS KINDA A JERK, BUT HE ISN'T A BAD GUYYY!! LET'S TRY TO TALK THIS OUT TO SAVE SORAI VILLAGE FROM THE REEEEAAL BAD GUYS THAT PROBABLY ESCAPED THE FOREST AND ARE STILL ON THEIR WAY HEREEEEEEE!!!!" He then took several moments to gasp for some air after shouting all of that in a one desperate breath.
Reika’s breath came fast and sharp, her body rigid with fury. Her wooden dragon lunged for Seijun, a force meant to end him, to silence the mocking ease in his stance, the careless way he dismissed her. But then— A flash of silver. The hiss of something cutting through wood. In the next instant, her attack was gone. The dragon, the extension of her rage, lay in two halves around him, powerless. Reika barely registered the destruction. Her vision blurred at the edges, but her tunnel focus stayed locked on him. His lips were moving. Words came, but they were just sounds. "Sorry, my dear..." The world around her faded into the background. She couldn’t stop seeing it—the burning village, the collapsed homes, the bodies. The faces of her clan frozen in terror, in pain. "I didn’t know." She hated his voice. Hated the way it sounded so casual, as if his words could mean anything. As if knowing changed anything. "Your clan is gone..." Her breath hitched and her eyes widened. The fire in her chest flared hotter, searing through every nerve. Her fingers curled tighter around the kunai at her side. "Don't throw that away." Something in her mind cracked. The sand beneath her feet felt unsteady. Her body trembled—not with fear, but with rage so overwhelming it felt like she might break apart.
Then— "AMA-NEESAMAAAAAAA!" Kihone’s voice sliced through the haze. It wasn’t like Seijun’s. It wasn’t slow, measured, or indifferent. It was desperate. Frantic. More words came, but they blended together in a blur of sound. "That guy… kinda a jerk… isn’t a bad guy!!" She barely heard him. The words tried to reach her, but her mind shoved them away, drowning them beneath the pounding of her heart, the whispers of old ghosts clawing at the edges of her thoughts. "Save… Sorai Village… real bad guys… still coming…" Her breath caught. The bandits. For the first time, something inside her hesitated. The real fight wasn’t here. It was out there. It hadn’t ended. People were still in danger. She blinked, her vision flickering like a flame in the wind. The weight of her fury pressed against her skull, screaming at her to finish what she started. To tear Seijun down. To prove she wasn’t weak.
But Kihone’s voice wasn’t just sound anymore. It was breaking through. She had to make a choice. Reika exhaled, her breath shaking, her fingers twitching like they weren’t sure whether to strike or release. Slowly, painfully, she pulled her chakra back. The air around her, once thick with the killing intent thrumming in her veins, felt like it had been wrenched away, leaving her raw and exposed. The wooden dragon that had once towered in the sand collapsed into nothing. The heat in her chest didn’t fade. Her body still trembled with rage, her mind still screamed for blood. But she forced herself to listen. Forced herself to see. Her eyes locked onto Seijun once more, sharp and unrelenting, but no longer clouded with tunnel vision. "If you're not a bandit…" The words came slow, stiff, each syllable dragging like she had to choke them out. "Then prove it." Her grip on the kunai didn’t loosen. "But if you’re lying…" Her voice was quieter now, rough but steady. "I will kill you myself."
A promise. A warning. A restraint she didn’t know she had left.
Izanagi stood transfixed at the edge of the chaos, his heart pounding so loudly it seemed to drown out the murmurs of the battlefield. He watched as Reika’s fury consumed the space between her and the man who had effortlessly unraveled her technique. Her scream was raw, guttural, and full of rage as it rang out in the still air, and every detail seared itself into Izanagi’s mind: the splintering of her wooden dragon, the fierce narrowing of her eyes, and the cold, measured threat in her voice as she declared, “If you’re not a bandit… then prove it. But if you’re lying, I will kill you myself.” In that moment, the weight of his own helplessness became self apparent in this situation.
Clutching his sword with white-knuckled resolve, Izanagi forced himself to observe rather than act immediately. As he watched his companions—Kihone’s resourceful clones and Reika’s awe-inspiring techniques—he battled a turbulent mix of awe, self-reproach, and determination. I must learn to overcome this fear, he thought, even as his body trembled with exhaustion. Though his inner voice was fraught with self-doubt, he knew that every step forward would be a step away from his own weakness.
Amidst the rising din, the sound of Kihone’s voice cut through the tension—a desperate call urging them to move forward. In response, Izanagi turned his gaze toward the looming outline of Sorai Village as his eyes lingered on the crumbling barricades and empty streets before him. In that quiet, uncertain moment, something in his vision shifted—a subtle change that made him see the village in a way he had never seen it before. Though he could not understand what was happening, the hidden forms and faint outlines of activity beyond the obvious stirred a strange mix of wonder and foreboding in his chest.
The world around him appeared subtly altered, as if a thin veil had been lifted. Shadows and shapes he’d previously missed now danced at the edges of his sight, hinting at hidden lives among the ruins. His gaze swept over silent windows and darkened doorways, and he caught sight of figures huddled behind makeshift defenses—villagers, waiting quietly, almost unseen by the ordinary eye. The eerie, unfamiliar clarity of his vision sent a shiver down his spine, and he wondered if this was some strange gift or curse he had inherited without knowing. In response to Reika's questioning of Albino-San, he spoke. " Uh. I think the villagers are all watching us... I can see them hiding around the corners over there... I think he's safe if he came from the village." He looked back to Kiho with uncertainty. His eyes seeming to glow a brighter hue than typically, but nothing that would immediately identify them as being special.

Kazuma of the Wind

Seijun stood unwavering as Kihone spoke, his words carrying the weight of something deeper—something meant to ground Reika when she seemed on the verge of spiraling. His golden eyes flicked toward them, observing. Good, he thought. They’re trying to pull her back from the edge. Then, Reika’s voice sliced through the air, sharp and unwavering. "If you’re lying, I’ll kill you." The tension hung thick between them, like a blade poised above a battlefield. For a moment, silence reigned. Then Seijun threw his head back and laughed. A short, crisp chuckle at first, then a genuine, amused burst of laughter that cracked through the heavy atmosphere like a sudden gust of wind. He grinned, tilting his head, eyes gleaming with something unreadable—curiosity, intrigue, maybe even respect. He swiped a thumb across his nose and let out a breathy sigh. "Well, damn. You really are a fun one, aren’t you?" His tone was light, almost teasing, but not dismissive. There was no fear in him, no offense taken—only the acknowledgment of a promise that, in another life, he might have welcomed as a challenge.
His gaze met Reika’s without hesitation, his presence steady, unwavering. “You know,” he continued, voice as casual as if they were discussing the weather, “I’ve been on the receiving end of a lot of threats before. Some empty. Some real. But yours?” He tilted his head slightly. “Yours has weight. You meant it. That’s good.” He let the words linger before shrugging. “But I’m not lying.” And just like that, his tone shifted, effortless and fluid, the sharp edge in his voice softening just slightly. “The only thing I’m here for is making sure the bandits don’t wipe out this village. You don’t have to trust me—I wouldn’t if I were in your position either—but killing me?” He grinned again, tapping his own chest. “Hate to break it to you, but you'll need more experience to make me even winded.” The wind stirred between them, carrying the weight of unspoken things—of loss, of anger, of survival. Seijun could see it in her—the weight of something bigger than just this moment. She carried a wound that had nothing to do with him, but he had stepped into its path regardless.
His stance relaxed slightly, but his presence remained steady. “Look, I get it,” he said, more earnestly this time. “Losing everything? Makes you want to take control of whatever’s left. But throwing yourself into fights without knowing your enemy?” He clicked his tongue, shaking his head. “That’s just setting yourself up for another loss.” Then, after a brief pause, he sighed, tilting his head toward Kihone. “And as for you,” he said, nodding at them, “I like your style. Keeping your cool while everyone else is losing it? Smart.” His smirk returned, but this time, there was something genuine behind it. “Don’t worry. I’ll make sure she doesn’t get herself killed, either.”
His golden eyes flicked back to Reika, sharp yet unreadable. “Whether you like it or not.” The tension remained thick, but Seijun didn’t move to escalate or push further. Instead, he merely stood there, watching—waiting to see how Reika would respond, if the fire in her gaze would harden into steel or if she’d find another way forward. Either way, he was here now. And he wasn’t going anywhere. "You can come out, everyone. Everything's fine," he gestured to the people in hiding. "We've got enough firepower to hold out now." Completely overlooking Izanagi's comment about the villagers or himself, Seijun gave a sly smile towards the boy's direction. He doesn't realize what a gift he has found, yet. Then it faded and Seijun would pull his hood back up to block out the sun. He couldn't risk his fair complexion.
There was the heaviest of heavy sighs with the rich flavor of relief exhaled from Kihone as he was pretty sure he heard Reika accede from pursuing the fight with Albino-san. He was still a few tens of feet away from the older folk, but would jog back with Izanagi to hear some of what Seijun was saying to Reika. Kiho's attention mostly went back to Izanagi, though. His brother's attention seemed to have drifted... away. It wasn't like he wasn't aware of what was going on, but it definitely seemed like his mind and gaze were on other things. Kihone looked to where his brother pointed out people hiding, but saw literally nobody. "You sure about that, Nagi?" Before he could get a reply, they were then standing before Seijun and Reika again, and Kihone was given kudos for keeping a cool head in this progressing situation.
This caused him to immediately reflect on how things went down in the past several minutes, and the eight year old was inclined to disagree. "Thank you, Albino-san, but no. I should've listened to Nagi when he said were probably here to help. Sometimes he understands things better than I do." Kihone playfully nudged his brother with an elbow and gave Nagi a proud smile, "Only sometimes, though!" After he finished saying this, Seijun made a declaration that he'd also protect Reika from herself. "Albino-san, I'm sorry for trying to attack you. Do you promise to protect Reika and Sorai?" Kihone would offer a hooked pinky finger up toward the man, knowing the gesture to be a sacred oath among real shinobi to keep their promises and stuff; at least that's what he was pretty sure he'd heard a few times before. Afterward, the man gave the all-clear signal to the folks who were hiding, and Kiho realized that Nagi was now two for two on being right about things today. This was either a really good thing or a horrifying omen. Regardless, Kihone found himself immediately brimming with questions for the new guy. "You said you were sent to protect Sorai? Do you have more help coming, or are you actually a really super strong ninja? Where are you from? Who do you work with? Are they heroic ninja like you? What's your ultimate technique? Oh! The way you handled that wood dragon was toootallyyyy wiiiiicked!! What's the biggest thing you've ever cut in half?" His insatiable curiousity was fixated on this new warrior of justice that was here to stop any harm from befalling his home.
Kihone would only see all too late as a large, tempered hand pushed him aside to make way for the burly carpenter boss, known to the locals as mister Mikoshida, from yesterday morning, "Oi oi! Pisss off you urchins! Stop hassling our great and mysterious savior!" He doesn't have time for your annoying questions." He wouldn't even give the boy a glance as Kiho managed to land in the sand on his hind quarters rather than on his side. Continuing, Mikoshida said, "After seeing how he handled you sorry lot, some opportunistic bandit rabble should be no problem! Aghahahaaa!!" His hearty laugh was earning the support of several others who began to cheer for Seijun with thanks and hopes in their hearts.
Kihone spit some sand out of his mouth as he picked himself up off the ground. It was almost surreal to be in this situation again after what he survived last night, and he felt frustrated somewhere deep down that he was used to it. Kiho gave Mikoshiba a most defiant glare as he walked right back up to the man that was around three times his height- not to mention his brawny build. Izanagi's habits had definitely rubbed off on Kiho over the years, and sometimes he was proud to be as much of a rebel as he was. Kihone presented the sheathed katana from his back, unsheathing it a few inches to reveal its battle-worn blade to Mikoshiba, "Don't underestimate me, you big, dumb jerk! Reika Ama-neesama said that Izanagi and I are shinobi now. We believe in ourselves and have learned some ninja skills! There were bandits in the ruins last night talking about attacking Sorai, so Izanagi and I beat them up! Well... Ama-neesama did most of the work, but we were pretty awesome too! You better believe it! Right, Nagi?!" He looked to his brother who had also been geared up a little from their midnight excursion.
Then he remembered the immediate looming threat, "Some of them got away, though..." Mikoshiba paused to hear what the child said before exclaiming, "You did what?!" His hand lashed out to grab the sword by the scabbard in an attempt to wrest it from Kihone's grip, "You antagonized them?! Now they're definitely coming to attack us in retaliation. Damn you urchins! You refugees have been plagues on our village since you showed up!" Kihone, of course, fought hard to keep the trophy of his first battle and victory, "NOO!! IT'S MIIIINE!!!" His raiton chakra flared for a moment and a bright flash of emerald green light would deter Mikoshiba from contesting the child further. After the flash ended, Kihone retreated to hide behind Reika, hugging his sword close to his chest and glaring back at Mikoshiba. The judging eyes of the other villagers and their not-so-hushed whispers only added to the tension Kihone was suddenly feeling from his own home. 'I knew we shouldn't have gone out last night...' He felt his tears form as the whispers began to join in with Mikoshiba in a dull chant as they chastised Kihone, Izanagi and the newest outsider, Reika for bringing danger to their doorsteps. "HOW COULD YOU?! YOU'VE REALLY DONE IT THIS TIME! NOW OUR FAMILIES ARE IN DANGER BECAUSE OF YOU!! I NEVER LIKED THOSE BRATS! WHY COULDN'T THEY BE QUIET LIKE THE OTHER ORPHANS?" The were too lost in the details to fully comprehend that this threat was truly imminent, even with Seijun's arrival beforehand. 'Why do they hate me so much? I try really hard... to be good. Koro-nii... help. Where are you?' Kihone made himself as small as he could behind Reika, still hugging his sword as he endured their ire. Such was another example of the folly of human nature.
Seijun’s words meant nothing to Reika. Not his tone, not his apology, not the so-called wisdom laced within them. They didn’t soothe the storm raging inside her, didn’t dull the sharp edge of her fury. If anything, they only added weight to the crushing emotions she was barely keeping at bay.
Her body burned with restraint. It took everything in her not to step forward and drive her fist straight into his smug face. Every muscle tensed, her nails digging into her palms, the heat of her anger contained but still boiling beneath the surface. I don’t need reminding… The bitter thought cut through her mind, jagged and self-inflicted. She didn’t need him to tell her her clan was gone. She lived with it every second of every day. But before she could lash back, before she could let her rage take hold again, Seijun shifted his attention—to Kihone.
The boy had rushed forward with Izanagi, breathless and buzzing with concern. Seijun’s words carried something else now—not arrogance, but acknowledgment. Praise. A promise, even. Reika’s chest tightened. It wasn’t anything sentimental—far from it—but there was something in his words that struck deeper than she wanted to admit. That feeling. That feeling. She had only ever known it once before—watching her brother lead their people. Standing behind his back, feeling the presence of a strength far greater than her own, knowing that he would shoulder the burden of their clan’s survival. That awe-inspiring certainty. Tears began to form from that feeling—she couldn't feel them. She inhaled, sharp and shallow, and her shoulders finally began to relax.
Then Kihone opened his mouth. The rapid-fire questions spilled out in a breathless tumble, and Seijun barely had a chance to answer before another came flying at him. Reika exhaled, pinching the bridge of her nose. Kihone's boundless energy had always been something of a marvel, but now, after everything, it was exhausting. She wasn’t sure if she wanted to laugh or yell at him to stop. But before either could happen— The villagers emerged. One by one, they slunk from their homes, their faces shadowed in anger and fear. Whispers turned to murmurs, murmurs to shouts.
Then came him. Mikoshida. The carpenter boss. "You antagonized them?!" His voice was like a hammer against stone, sharp and unrelenting. "Now they're definitely coming to attack us in retaliation! Damn you urchins! You refugees have been plagues on our village since you showed up!" Reika felt her stomach drop. Not for herself. For Kihone. For Izanagi. More voices joined his, feeding into the rising wave of anger.
"HOW COULD YOU?! YOU'VE REALLY DONE IT THIS TIME! NOW OUR FAMILIES ARE IN DANGER BECAUSE OF YOU!!"
"I NEVER LIKED THOSE BRATS! WHY COULDN'T THEY BE QUIET LIKE THE OTHER ORPHANS?"
Reika’s breathing slowed. Her hands curled into fists at her sides. Her vision darkened at the edges, her heartbeat pounding in her ears. It wasn’t even about the bandits anymore. It wasn’t about strategy, about logic, about saving Sorai Village. These people—they had already decided that Kihone and Izanagi were the problem. That the ones who fought for them were somehow the ones to blame. Her body moved before she even processed it. One step. Two. Three. Then— A fist, swung with every ounce of strength she had. It collided against Mikoshida’s face with a sickening crack. The force sent him staggering, his body jerking backward from the sheer impact.
"Retaliation?" Reika spat, voice sharp as a kunai. Her chest heaved, her breath coming in heavy, uneven gulps. The fire in her veins had ignited once more, but this time, it was cold. Controlled. "You mean like you’ve been doing since the village was lost?" Her voice rose, cutting through the silence that followed the punch. "The people who were killed—the ones who fought—and the rest of you who did nothing afterward?" She could see it in their eyes. The flinch. The shame they didn’t want to acknowledge. She stepped forward again, her words burning. "You don’t think those bandits moved in because of your helplessness? These boys attacked them because they were going to attack first! Not the other way around, you cowards!"
Suddenly she wasn’t shouting anymore. The force in her voice came from somewhere deeper, somewhere raw and unfiltered. She sucked in a breath, her lungs tight, her throat aching from the weight of everything she had wanted to say since she arrived here. Her next words came quieter, but heavier. "Your village is going to die. Your people are going to die. The bandits were just going to speed that up. These boys didn’t want that, so they tried to save you." The silence stretched between them.
Reika’s hands trembled. Her nails dug into her palms as she fought to contain the hurricane inside her. Then, with a sharp inhale, she spat onto the ground at Mikoshida’s feet. "You're pathetic," she muttered, the weight of her fury pressing into every syllable. "And you all know you are too." The words hung heavy in the air, suffocating. Reika didn’t wait for a response. "We'll all risk our lives to save your village and I'll even change your desert when all's said and done, but you don't deserve saving."
Nagi stood at the edge of Sorai Village aside Kiho, his gaze fixed on the crumbling barricades and silent, empty streets. Kihone had just asked him, “Are you sure about that, Nagi?” and he’d nodded, seeing the figures hidden in the distance without line of sight on them. Kiho would tell Seijun that it was Izanagi that was the one who was calm. Nagi raised his brow in a moment of confusion.' I was calm?' he thought, thinking about how frustrated the whole situation had made him. The elbow jab at Nagi made him laugh and rub the back of his head in embarrassment for a moment before Kihone would begin to harass Seijun with a thousand questions. Nagi would pretend not to be equally interested and turn his head away while one eye kept watching as he listened intently.
An all too familiar voice echoed across the sand like grating nails on a chalkboard to Izanagi. Mikoshiba. He'd been a pretty avid point of contention in the village for the boys, thus why Nagi felt inclined to kick him, push him, interrupt his work and cause any other minor inconveniences he could each time the opportunity was given. As usual, he was shooing them away. Kihone would be the first to react to his antagonistic behavior. Unfortunately, Kihone would have given the man the ammunition he needed to do what he'd always wanted. Turn everyone against them. When the first shouts reached him, Izanagi’s eyes blazed with a mix of frustration and youthful defiance. “Hey!! Who the hell do you think you are?! We did what we had to do!”he yelled, his tone brash and a little crude, the words tumbling out in a way that betrayed his youth. He couldn’t believe the villagers would blame him and Kihone for trying to protect them. “You're being a bunch'a jerks!! If you're so scared of the bandits maybe ya shoulda' done something first!”he added, his voice cracking with both anger and hurt. The raw, unfiltered edge in his words showed that, despite his small frame, he was not about to be bullied by the bitter voices of grown-ups.
Before the shouting could escalate any further, Reika stepped forward with her calm authority, her presence quiet yet commanding enough to cut through the fury. The villagers fell silent as she spoke, her words heavy with truth and resolve. But even as Reika’s voice tried to bring reason back to the crowd, Izanagi’s own stubborn spirit rose within him. He couldn’t just stand by while his brother was scolded and blamed."I’m not some useless kid." he muttered under his breath, his small hands clenching at this sides. Before he could speak again, Reika's fury moved to action as she met Mikoshiba's dumb face with the strength of a hundred Nagi kicks. His hands unclenched as he winced at the sound of the thud. Reika's words cut him down, forcing him and everyone else to swallow their shame.
Just then, a small voice broke through the tension—a village orphan from their shared home burst forward, eyes wide with panic. "Kihooooo!! Nagiiiii!! Did you bring back Big Brother Koroto? He went to go find you last night!" The question, simple and desperate, snapped everyone’s attention away from the heated exchange. The sight of the little orphan was a momentary relief until she posed the question. Nagi's eyes moved to Kiho wide and fearful. " Uh oh bro. Do you think that Koroto-Nii got caught by scar cheek?" He swallowed the lump in his throat as he looked to Reika and Seijun, hoping for some sort of reassuring answer that he doubted would come.
