Julian nodded and donned an understanding smile. He didn’t do so well when he felt cornered, but he and Riker responded in very different ways. “Well, that’s what friends are for. And if you ever feel cornered, I’ll do my best to get you a path out.”
He didn’t linger in the hug for too long–not because he wanted to break away, but because he knew Riker was a bit squeamish about Cassidy. He didn’t want to give him any reason to get teased, so he drew away with a smile. “Um, you don’t have to carry all of those bags, either. I know you’re really strong but I don’t want you to wear yourself out. So if you get tired of holding anything, please let me help! Maybe it’ll help make me stronger, too. I don’t really want to go work out or anything so I don’t have a lot of options to work on that.”
Julian wasn’t the best Knight, and his skills weren’t in fighting, but he was focusing very intently on trying to be the best version of himself, and that meant he needed to try to eat healthier, and be more active, and learn first aid, and–
Well, and make friends, probably.
Cassidy was just accepting his milkshake; he thanked the worker, stuck his straw in, and turned to face the two. He was ready to go and nodded towards the door. Cassidy didn’t seem like he minded waiting for them, but he made his way out of the now crowding cafe to go wait outside.

As Julian pulled back, Riker glanced down at the bags he’d gathered up. He didn’t want Julian to feel like he needed to help, but since he was asking, Riker also didn’t want him to feel like he wasn’t needed.
So Riker shifted one of the medium weight bags from his arm and held it out for Julian.
“Thanks, I’ll let you know if I need more help,” he promised. He tensed a little as Cassidy passed to head out of the cafe with a strawberry milkshake, and managed to hide the little grin that tugged on his lip. He didn’t think Cassidy would really want to try one for himself.
Although he hadn’t expected to run into Cassidy of all people, Riker didn’t feel as though the day had been ruined. If anything, he was more content now that he knew Julian would have Cassidy to keep an eye on him. Or at least be someone Julian knew at the school.
And he was relieved to see that Cassidy was okay, and not just hearing about him, second hand.
