He nodded and reached for his keys even before he heard Kaelan’s muffled voice on the other line.
”Jett’s there?” Kaelan sounded a bit worried but he was rapidly trying to go through his mental checklist. ”He doesn’t have to get me, I’m sure I can make it back before the rain starts.”
Which probably would have been more convincing if there wasn’t already the soft patter of early raindrops against the window in the hotel room.
Kaelan was undeterred. Everything important was already as safe as it would be in his backpack, and if he hurried back quickly then the water might not even have time to seep through the cheap canvas. He knew he’d have to put in a lot of effort to be convincing, so he tried to keep his voice even as he picked up the pace. Orien knew him too well so he doubted he’d be able to hide that he was trying to hurry over the phone, especially with it pressed so close to his face. ”Class was good. I don’t want to keep you on the phone if Jett is there, I don’t want to be rude.”
“Tell him I can be there in–what, five minutes?” Jett hadn’t been to the campus in a while but he’d chosen this hotel because of its close proximity. “He can wait by the administrative building up front. You want to come?” Naturally, Jett had already assumed Orien would go with him. If he wanted to stay here, Jett wouldn’t argue. He doubted their food would be there that quickly, and he could always tell the woman at the front desk to just put it in their room and they’d get to it when they got back. It wouldn’t take any extra time, probably. It’s not like the hotel was that busy right now. “Tell him not to be stubborn unless he wants to have to air dry his wet clothes in a cold hotel room.”
