Was the hybrid scolding him?! Nok's eyes locked onto Kura with a mix of shock and frustration. "They started it. Don't like them staring," he grumbled. Still, after one last glare at the offending table, he turned his face back down to the plate before him. His food was already half gone; which felt like more than enough and also not enough at all to a starved belly. Well, whether he felt like it could fit or not, he was going to finish it off! If this deal didn't work out, he might be out of luck for another meal before the day was done.

"Thought the story might know something, 'cause it knows pearl was in Jauhar last. Might at least know what it looks like." He snorted and scooped up another bite. "Only knows Jauhar.. Not much information for tracking."

"They're going to stare if you snarl like that," Kahukura chided under her breath. Her eyes briefly looked up from her dish to pin him before the intensity of it caused her to fold and go back to her meal. It wasn't often that her feathers were ruffled to the point of making a show, but Kura didn't take well to attention. Curious looks were just as quick to turn into stones and insults as fast as the wind could change.

"That's why I - we - still need to find out more information. I haven't been here long enough to have all the details just yet." And not to mention if she had then why would she need his help? She didn't let that slip, though, lest her jab that fork of his into her hand.

"How practiced are you with reading maps?" Or can you at all?

Nok gave a disgruntled snort, but the subtle relent on Kura's part encouraged him to let it go. It seemed it would be a vicious cycle of staring and snarling if he kept playing into that game. "Mm, not worth losing food," he relented. He was still acutely aware of the looks they were still getting, but at least he considered the meal more important than showing any dominance.

He slurped up another mouthful. The meal was still odd, but he was already growing accustomed to the texture. Ugh, his stomach wasn't too pleased to be so full though. "Yeah, I read maps." Of course, his family's maps weren't like maps the general public used. A leather hide with landmarks and numbers of steps marked on it was probably not what Kura had in mind. "Map knows where we go?"

"It knows where to start. The last known location of the crew who had it says that the Pearl-" With a hum, she reached back into her satchel and dug around. After a moment of riffling, Kahukura produced a well worn leather notebook. "-Was talked about in the next village. They might have a clue about where to go next or, hopefully, someone who exactly talked to the mage." She wasn't positive on any of it, but Kura could hope. There had to be someone around who had heard of it, right?

Someone who wasn't interested in keeping it for themselves, anyway.

Having barely touched her own food, Kura instead focused on her notebook and pulled out a little scrap of charcoal from her pack to scribble some notes along the margin. The book itself was far from a professional notetaker; it was the scribblings of a mad woman, lined and dotted in odd places that only made sense to her with diagrams and drawings lining the corners.

"When you're done we'll gather our supplies and head out in the morning. Okay?"

Nok cocked a brow sharply. He wasn't used to looking for something that had such little basis. when he hunted, he had an idea of where his prey walked. He had paths to follow and old lessons passed down through the generations to guide him. He knew the signs the prey left behind; prints and chewed leaves and dung. He knew he would be able to track his target.

This was still a hunt, but he had no known trails to follow. No lessons. No visuals. No dung. It seemed like it would be like trying to catch his own shadow. He had never tried such a hunt before. Honestly, it was both frustrating and exciting to think about. No known outcome. The chances of finding a lost pearl in this big world were slim. If it was the best way for him to get home, then he would just have to bear it.

"I don't have money for supplies," he reminded around a mouthful of food. Money wasn't everything though! "If you can tell what's good hunting, I can hunt." His eyes narrowed slightly as he looked out into the trees. There were things to hunt, but he didn't know what was safe to eat; and damned if he was going to risk eating something wrong. It would be good to have a little advice now.

When he mentioned his financial status - or lack of one - Kahukura just gave a 'mmm' with a nod. If he couldn't afford a meal then he very well couldn't afford supplies, could he? She would have to trade some things off which was...distressing, but the payoff would be worth it, right? And it wasn't as if she needed every little trinket she traveled with...even if she wanted them. Desperately.

Hunting though...At that she looked up and really studied him. "That's not...a bad idea, actually. We could get a guide book on what's safe to eat and that would keep costs low." As well as the general weight they would need to carry. As a rule she usually snacked on fungi she knew was safe and stuck to roots she'd purchased in passing villages. Fresh meat, though...

She was sure her grandmother would love the idea of her granddaughter depending on an earthling male for anything. Just another thing to add to the list.

"What do you need to hunt with? Do you need a bow or rope or....other stuff?"

"They got books for hunting here?" Now that was an interesting idea. If it could give him the right rules for the local prey, then perhaps hunting wouldn't be so hard after all! "Get guide book." Nok raised his chin slightly and nodded. "Use it to catch lots of things, then can trade the parts. Get all we need with it." Just the idea of having a little more control of his current situation made him feel a little more hopeful. Not much, but a little.

He cocked his brow at the question and started to shake his head. He paused short though and pursed his lips. "Fine with the sword I got, but could use a smaller knife, too. Should see what guide book says. Might need more depending on prey."

"Then we'll do that in the morning," Kahukura mused. She'd have to go through her things tonight, pick out which ones she could live without and mentally prepare herself for the haggling process. Her sister could have handled it - they'd been raised by a merchant, after all - but she...wasn't the most abrasive.

"So...you don't have a room, do you? At the inn?" He didn't strike her as the sort, anyway. It wasn't normally an issue for her since Kura preferred being away from people anyway, but in an area she wasn't familiar with...Well, it had been a great spot for some added security. "You can share mine if you want. I have an extra bed. It's not much but at least you won't get eaten while you sleep." Or robbed.

Nok hummed out his agreement. Food now, sleep, and get a fresh start in the morning. Go at the new day with vigor to hurry up and find that pearl so that he can get home. At least, that was the hope. He still wasn't certain about the whole thing, but now he had a goal in mind. A somewhat plan of action.

Kura's question of his room status earned a nose wrinkle. "No. No inn. No room." For one thing, that would cost money that he didn't have. For another.. it meant going indoors. Absolutely not. "Not eaten yet, right? I'll be okay. Can meet at your inn when morning comes."

Kura thought about it for a moment before sliding what she had left of her meal over to him. She wasn't sure he would want her leftovers, but it was better than letting it go to waste. The hybrid had already eaten more than her fill for the evening, and for reasons she couldn't pinpoint, she hadn't had much of an appetite this evening.

Her 'solo journey across Tendaji' now had a slight hiccup, but this was a good thing, right? Nok could help her, she could help him and if he didn't stab her then he would be on his way. Good deed done. So why was she so nervous about it, then?
