Ugh! If they had just stopped the smugglers and tied them up at the other docks…Xylia let out a soft curse, hating that she allowed Valek to talk her into going along for this crazy ride. Her own blades came out as she splashed through water, already rising above her ankles, and Xylia cursed every other swing as she knocked back another smuggler. “What type of cargo did they even have again?” They seemed so determined to keep it! Thankfully it didn’t look like actual earthlings or animals were down below which was a relief. She couldn’t imagine having to release and help a bunch of living things back to shore!

“Very potent medicines.” Replied Valek as he continued pushing forward, his back to Xylia’s as they both guarded each other from scattered smugglers who were in such a panic that they didn’t even question the pair of hybrids who came from below deck. Sometimes it looked like other pirates from a different crew were coming on board and Valek worked with Xylia to push them back with the original crew. “A noble enjoys hosting some lavish parties where he can work his magic with it. It allows him to pull off a bunch of corruption and sneak around earthlings and whatever he wants, really.”

Xylia’s lips curled. “That’s disgusting.” It would be fine to just let the ship sink then. Hopefully most of the smugglers knew how to swim…though she was mostly worried about herself at the moment. It was one thing to fight a bunch of smugglers and another thing entirely to get back to land. “We’re almost at the upper decks, what’s the plan?” She asked, relying upon the man who had talked her into this situation in the first place.

“How do you feel about hopping ships?” Valek asked as he helped Xylia out of the water and up onto the higher landing that marked the entrance to the upper decks. “While they’re fighting on this one, we grab the other ship and meet my friends who should be arriving soon.” His boot connected with someone’s face sending them tumbling back into a trio of fighting smugglers who had been clashing swords over one of the many crates that others were trying to claim in the middle of the chaos.

“What choice do I have?” Xylia hissed back as she elbowed a man out of the way, rushing towards the upper decks for some fresh air. She would have enjoyed it more if it wasn’t for the other ship that was firing flaming arrows and what looked like magic towards their current position. “I am most definitely never going on a ship with you again.” She promised Valek, pulling him out of the way as everything crashed around them.

“You know…I’ll accept that.” Valek replied as he tumbled along, reaching out to tuck Xylia against him as more explosions happened. “Pirates definitely were not in today’s forecast.” He admitted, holding her for a second longer until everything was safe. Helping her up, the hybrid tugged her along after him until they found one of the connecting ramps. “Age before beauty.” He teased with a small smile, urging her along so that he could follow over to the attached ship. Thankfully the fighting was still in full force around them and it was easy enough to slip over with the dense smoke covering both ships now.

“That is…” Xylia began before shaking her head. Age before beauty? She would remember that stupid quip. It was probably a good thing Valek never knew how to close his mouth because for a second there when they were pressed together during the explosions, her own face had actually warmed with a flush. Damn him! She just wouldn’t linger on the thought. Closing her gaze, Xylia focused on regaining her composure and pressed forward to the ship. Once Valek crossed over she simply kicked off the ramp and watched it spin between the two boats before it crashed into the ocean with a splash. A splash that would have been loud enough to catch some attention if it wasn’t for all the fighting. “Alright, now what?”

“We take the wheel.” Valek explained as he glanced around, making certain that they had yet to be noticed by others onboard. “If we take the wheel, pull this ship away a bit…then we can stop the fighting for a moment.” He held up his blades with a smirk. “Want to keep count of how many pirates we down and compare notes later?”

“You’re insufferable.” Xylia replied with a roll of her bi-colored gaze, the hybrid having enough of Valek’s antics for one night. Still, she could resist holding up her own weapons. “I’ll definitely have more than you.” She promised, ready to fight her way to the front of the ship where they could wait for the promised help.

Valek could only chuckle at the reaction before going after Xylia. “You wish.” He quipped back, passing her so that he could take out a couple of pirates that were charging at them. Thankfully once they got to the helm he did spot another ship on the horizon. Despite his earlier confidence there had been a moment of concern, but Valek was just thankful his partners had come along in time to catch them. The noble would have to wait another day, at least they had managed to stop the cargo in time. Plus, this would at least give them an idea of the drop-off location. Maybe he could still go and meet the sponsor yet. Soon. Valek smirked as he cut off another pirate, this time pushing him backwards into another so that Xylia could press ahead and commandeer the wheel. “That better count for more than one!” He called out teasingly, a grin on his lips as they prepared to finish up this particular fight.
