“What did you say?” Chad’s father growled lowly, incredulous that someone would consider threatening him with something so ridiculous. He turned to Chad then, not releasing his arm, but instead pulled him closer.
“Am I manhandling you?” he asked, almost sweetly, to which Chad quickly shook his head, his eyes filling with tears and expression pained, scared. He kept his eyes on the ground. He couldn’t risk looking up at Devyn. He didn’t want him getting involved. He didn’t want Devyn getting hurt.
“What did you say your name was? Depen?” the man snorted. “You’re lucky I don’t arrest you for being a creep. Or is that something you like doing? Going around hugging little boys?”
“I wanted him to,” Chad said then, because that wasn’t something Devyn should be harassed about. “He was just being nice.”
“Was I talking to you?” Chad’s father snapped, and squeezed Chad’s arm harder so that he whimpered again, his knees buckling a little from the pressure.

Percy would want him to. Percy would want him to.
He could just hit him. He could just knock him out. He could hit him so hard he beat the sense right out of him. Not like he had any to begin with.
Michael would understand.
Would Chad understand? Or would it just make this worse?
“Yeah, go ahead. I’d love to file a report on this.” No, he wouldn’t. He didn’t want paper and laws, he wanted blood. He pulled out his phone, and pressed a few buttons on it and then looked back at the officer. “I’ll get my people involved, we’ll get this all taken care of. How do you want to do this? You think those bruises on his arm are going to develop before the rest of them heal?”
Devyn wasn’t afraid of him. Had no reason to be afraid of him. What was the worst thing that happened, he powered up and dropped him on his world? Who cared? His identity was compromised? Who cared.
Chad was more important than any of that.
And if Devyn couldn’t win this by following Earth rules, he’d just follow his own.

“Your people?” Chad’s father barked out a humorless laugh. “Are you accusing me of something, clown?”
He still hadn’t released his hold on Chad’s arm, but now Chad was looking worriedly from his father to Devyn as he tried not to cringe. He grit his teeth and held his breath and willed himself to let as few tears as possible fall. Chad didn’t want Devyn getting involved with his father. It would end poorly. Even if he was sure that Devyn could easily beat him in any fight.
Chad’s father didn’t look intimidated, just angry. He looked like he very much wanted to hurt Devyn, maybe do worse in self defense.
“Chad, get in the car,” he said, finally releasing his arm and Chad stumbled backwards and immediately rubbed where his skin was white from the pressure.
He was torn. He didn’t want to get in the car. And yet… he knew things would be worse if he didn’t.
He swallowed nervously and looked up at Devyn once more before turning to do as he was told.
But they weren’t the only ones in the park, and it seemed like Chad’s father realized this and wasn’t going to do what he would have liked to do with so many witnesses. So he sneered and gave Devyn another look over before turning as well.

If this were any other time, any other place, Devyn could have gotten away with it. He didn’t care if it was public, he didn’t care about anything other than Chad being okay.
Devyn crossed his arms over his chest and watched as Chad was led away. He didn’t know if there was any way to accurately convey through a look that everything was going to be okay while simultaneously looking like he was absolutely furious.
Percy would have understood the look, he doubted Chad would.
But, he’d made a promise that he would look after him. That he’d protect him.
And he’d just let him leave with a man who didn’t seem to have any issue hurting him.
Chad had gone with him. There wasn’t much more he could do sans taking him by force, and if there was even a sliver of Chad that wanted to stay, Devyn knew he couldn’t push his luck. So, he waited until they drove away. Waited until they were out of sight.
And then, he called Michael.
