He didn’t want to admit that he slept better when Devyn was around. Maybe because he had someone to watch his back, or maybe because Devyn knew what hardship was like. Michael knew it wasn’t fair of him to say he’d had hardships, not when he was so privileged as it was, but it still ate away at him inside.
But with Devyn around, he could think clearer. He could breathe. He didn’t know why that was the case, but he appreciated it greatly.
He just didn’t know how to show Devyn that he appreciated it.
Or that he was relieved that Devyn wanted to stay in his room that night.
“That’s fine, I don’t mind,” he said as he focused very hard on his pizza and took another bite. Was that too obvious? That he didn’t mind? Should he have put up more of a fight?
“Might as well save you some time. My room is closer to the kitchen, anyway.” Yeah that was a horrible excuse, but maybe it would work.

At this, Devyn laughed and nodded. “This is true. Very good point, perhaps I should just sleep in your room more often. Although, I’m getting better with all those midnight snacks. I don’t need so many. I think I’m getting spoiled with all those dinners you’ve made for me. This doesn’t really compare.”
He looked at the piece of pizza he had that he hadn’t yet finished, but shrugged.
Devyn didn’t seem particularly distraught about his lack of culinary proficiency here on Earth. He was learning, he’d have to keep practicing if he had any intention of improving.
He wasn’t ashamed of it. In fact, he almost seemed happy to have something he could look forward to practicing.
“I don’t wake up as often when I’m sleeping next to you, though.”
Hadn’t really had any nightmares, either.
“You must be my good luck charm.”

“This is good, Dev,” Michael was quick to try and reassure. Making pizza wasn’t as easy as throwing something in the microwave. There was some patience and finesse to it that Devyn seemed to enjoy.
“I started cooking so I could distract myself. And because Peter was just starting high school when he moved in with me. I wanted to make sure he was taken care of. I guess I also felt guilty for not being in his life for… most of it,” he admitted, but distracted himself with another bite of pizza.
As for Devyn not waking up as often when he slept next to him… Michael tried to pretend that the heat in his face was just because he was thinking how bad of a brother he was to Peter when he was growing up. Or something.
“Same,” he said after a few moments, although he didn’t look at Devyn when he said it. He’d been sleeping better since Devyn started staying in his room. And he dreaded the nights that he would be back in his own.
“I’ll teach you. Or we can go to classes together if you’d like that. That way I’m not the only one bossing you around,” he joked. He tried not to do that, but… he knew he could be a little picky about things.

Praise from Michael was more substantial than praise from just about anyone else, so when he said it was good, he couldn’t help but smile a little. Even if his mouth was full of pizza already.
He laughed, because he really didn’t classify what Michael said as being bossy.
“If you want to come to classes with me, you’re more than welcome. You’re good company. But I won’t be able to surprise you with new recipes if you’re learning the same secrets I am.” He didn’t seem like this was actually something to worry or be upset about
He hadn’t seen Peter in a while, so he could only hope that he’d be happy that Michael was voluntarily willing to get out of the house and go do things with him. It was sweet that they cared so much about each other, but he didn’t want to tease Michael about it.
“But I feel like I’d enjoy lessons with you more. If you haven’t had your fill of teaching by the time you come home from work, I’d enjoy taking lessons from you.”
There was a lot he could learn from Michael.
A lot he still had to learn about him, too.
