Kamacite was grateful that the Queen seemed to realize how much many of them needed medical care after everything. He remained near Cymophane until it seemed as though they should move up to get their medals. He frowned a little more than he had been, and tried not to limp as he kept his head down and approached the Queen.

He'd seen her up close before, but it was always a surprise to remember how small in stature she was. Not that he was much taller. And not that she had any reason to seem more intimidating with the power she had.

Graciously, Kamacite accepted his medal, holding it in both hands and drawing it closer to his body as if to protect it. Instead of moving back to where he'd been standing before, Kamacite very purposefully moved closer to where Axinite was standing, hoping that Cymophane would follow.

He looked up at Axinite for a few moments, trying to search his face to find anything readable that would give Kamacite a hint on how to help him. For now, he remained close.

Aquamarine's continued presence helped to keep Jet calm. He felt dizzy and worn down, running on the remnants of adrenaline. If he had any blood left in his face he might have been a bit flustered from the Queen commenting on his modesty.

He didn't think of it as being modest, though. He thought it was only fair that his teammates received the same recognition. They didn't have to agree to help him, to put themselves in danger. He was forever grateful that they had, because there was no way he and Aquamarine could have taken on more than just Ganymede by themselves. Maybe if he hadn't been so injured already, but Sessrumnir and his summon needed at least three Generals to keep him under control at one point.

Jet didn't look away when Laurelite pulled out the black box, although his eyes did widen a bit in surprise. He hadn't expected anything in return for their successful mission. He was proud that they'd stopped Ganymede and her allies from creating something that could have damaged the Negaverse, and managed to capture Ganymede as well.

"Thank you, Your Majesty," he said, a bit breathlessly as he made an unsteady step forward to receive the medal the Queen had made for all of them. He needed Aquamarine's help to keep him from surely falling over, so he walked slowly.

Ganymede's laughter was obnoxious, but she didn't deserve any attention beyond keeping her under control while the Queen and Axinite were in the room.

Carnallite approached and accepted her medal with a brief, respectful bow of her head. Like Bloodstone, she didn’t feel any particular drive to collect visible trinkets of her work; nevertheless, she appreciated the intention. Carnallite would prefer power, but it wasn’t as if the Queen could go around bestowing more upon every pawn who happened to do a good job and survive a mission, otherwise there’d be a much larger number of incompetent Captains and Generals running around.

Medal in hand, Carnallite stepped aside with Bloodstone and eyed the others, gaze occasionally flicking down to the Princess.

-

The youma that was Cymophane lumbered forward to accept his medal. He had quite the collection after only a year, and was pleased to have earned another. Careful not to shed too much fur on the Queen, he took his prize with a smile full of long, vicious fangs.

Cymophane followed Kamacite over to Axinite so he could make sure Kamacite didn’t trip and fall with his injury. (Foot? Ankle? Kamacite gave no indication, but by the way he was moving, Cymophane assumed it was one of the two.) They hadn’t been dismissed yet, so Cymophane stood quietly, as unobtrusive as he could be with the illusion still in place — not because he didn’t want to be seen, but because there currently wasn’t any need for him to stand out.

Aquamarine followed Jet. He gave no indication that he felt any which way about the medal. The Queen liked to commemorate special occasions; to Aquamarine, the successful capture of a Princess seemed special enough to warrant one. What took up space in his thoughts was her confidence in Jet and their team.

As much faith as he put in Jet, Aquamarine did not expect the mission to end this way. That Jet was alive was a relief; in his mind, it had never been a guarantee. Aquamarine usually expected the worst out of any given situation, particularly when a mission required him to place his trust in others. Coping with failure and loss was easier that way, but it meant victory often came as a surprise.

He took his medal with a respectful bow, and muttered along with Jet’s, “Thank you, Your Majesty.”

His hand slipped away from Jet’s back, conscious now of his own hovering. He knew Jet would not want to appear weak when his only ambition was to faithfully serve the Queen, and the organization she represented. Aquamarine stepped back and resumed his previous position. His eyes never left Jet; the moment it seemed like he might need assistance, Aquamarine would move to offer it.

At his feet, the Princess stirred.

-

Ganymede’s quiet laughter grew louder — less breathy, more a show of obvious amusement. She managed to lift her head and put a hand beneath her like she meant to rise. A sharp pain shot through her wounded shoulder and robbed her of the opportunity, sending her crashing back to the floor.

Still, her gaze lingered in the direction of Jet and Laurelite.

“You went through all that trouble,” she said, voice soft enough to be mistaken for calm, “and all she gives you is a silly little pin for your jacket?”

Only once did Lopezite look at the Princess; if he were in her position, he wasn’t sure he would have been trying to taunt anyone. She wasn’t in a good place already, but if she agitated someone? If she angered them?

She was in a room full of people devoted to her, to this cause.

It probably wasn’t going to end well.

But, it wasn’t his problem, and he wouldn’t have made any effort to correct or curb her behavior when Queen Laurelite, General King Axinite, and a slew of Generals–and Eternals–were here. Maybe she was delirious from pain and blood loss.

He didn’t envy her, but as far as he was concerned, she wasn’t his problem. He had bowed his head politely to Queen Laurelite, thanked her in a whisper, and accepted the medal. He slipped back as quickly as he had moved forward.
PostPosted: Wed Feb 02, 2022 6:06 pm

When Kamacite and Cymophane moved to Axinite’s side, he was aware of them but didn’t immediately look at either of them. His attention was on Queen Laurelite for a few seconds ,but as they settled in place he allowed himself a moment’s distraction.

His brows were knitted together, but the corner of his lip briefly twitched into something of a smile. It was an effort to be reassuring, but he didn’t seem to have much energy to spare.

His attention returned to Ganymede and he seemed visibly disturbed by her. Maybe it was her current state, or her hubris, or her disrespect.

Maybe he was just thinking about how he held her responsible for the state of the others.

Laurelite regained his attention quickly when she looked at Ganymede–and laughed. It was a light, tinkling sound. She was as happy as she was smug.

“Oh, bless your heart. No.”

When the last of the medals had been passed out, she closed the box and it shimmered out of existence.

There was something knowing on her face, and she looked at the Princess once more. She could have laughed again.

“I’m glad you’re here for this, Ganymede. You’ve had questionable timing in the past, but I think this makes up for it. The medals are but a prelude to my gratitude. I’m feeling generous, so I’ll let you witness this firsthand.”

Laurelite did not ask Jet to come to her. She walked to him.

“You have suffered enough this night.”

And, so many nights before.

She reached to stroke his cheek, gently, to avoid agitating any of his injuries.

“You will hurt for me once more, tonight. And then, let us hope, never again.”

Laurelite did not ask him if he was ready; she knew he was.

She had been watching, and waiting, and planning.

There were no reasons to put this off for any longer.

She smiled sweetly, apologetically. Proudly.

She slipped her hand into his chest.

Jet didn’t care what Ganymede thought. He didn’t care if the Queen ordered her to be killed right then and there. As a transcended Princess, they couldn’t exactly steal her starseed. Maybe if she was dead? That was for the Queen to decide.

It wasn’t the silly little pin that mattered to him, but the Queen’s faith in all of them. She’d expected them to succeed, and so they had.

His good eye remained on the Queen as she approached him, although her motives were unclear. He shivered a little from the fever and bit the inside of his cheek to help draw his attention from the rest of his body’s aches and pains.

He almost apologized for his state of dress, if he hadn’t been momentarily confused by her words. He would have apologized for standing before her unkept and filthy and covered in blood. But the way she touched his cheek, the way she smiled at him, he thought he knew.

As her hand slipped into his chest, he didn’t flinch or pull away, but he clenched his teeth as the wave of raw energy and Chaos filled him. It had been six years since he’d become a General and last felt pain like this, although not nearly as strong.

A part of him wondered if she’d missed and grabbed hold of his heart instead, because it was beating so quickly and heavily that surely it would burst. Darkness clouded his vision, and he felt himself start to falter and instinctively reached out beside him to search for Aquamarine’s hand. He held his breath instead of allowing himself to cry out in pain, and squeezed Aquamarine’s hand tight once he found it. Tears might have pricked his vision, or maybe it was the beading sweat that rolled down his face.

It felt like both an eternity and over in an instant. Once the Queen was finished, Jet could no longer keep himself standing, and managed to carefully lower himself onto his good knee. His outfit had changed into one with black, teal, and purple. And the power that coursed through and winded him meant he was no longer just a General.

His first thought: He was going to kill the Queen. Maybe he’d run his rapier through her stomach. Maybe he’d shove his dagger into her neck. Either way, he would kill her — or make a very good attempt and end up dead himself. Aquamarine watched her hand slip into Jet’s chest and thought, Whatisshedoingshe’sgoingtokillhim. That was the answer his paranoid brain decided to jump to, because a dead Jet was the worst thing that could ever happen to Aquamarine, and he always expected the worst.

His second thought: He couldn’t kill the Queen because Jet grabbed his hand. (He couldn’t kill the Queen regardless, because the Queen was the Queen and she wasn’t about to be taken out by one measly General.) Jet grabbed his hand because Jet’s starseed was still in his chest, where the Queen’s hand was, which meant she wasn’t taking it from him. She was doing the opposite. This was Jet’s reward. Not some pin — a suitable honor for someone like Aquamarine, but not for Jet.

His third thought: Oh…

Slowly, Jet dropped to one knee. Aquamarine stood beside him, still clutching his hand.

Oh…

Months ago, after the Queen called them into the throne room as two of her most trusted, Aquamarine asked Jet, Who do you think’s next in line?

Biased as he was, he’d always thought Jet was the only logical answer.

Now, Aquamarine stared because he could do nothing else, struck speechless by the power that emanated from their newest General King.

The tension beneath his fingers' bothered him next to none. He smothed them softly over the silken-hot strands, careful of where they were matted or marred by bits of dried blood. Brief brush of touch before he let go. Far more for Faustites propriety than his own, cause the whole thing of what was going on between -- everyone -- seemed really important. Fullah subtext that held far more at play than he could've ever imagined. Especially if his Firebrand was handing out praise. Albite got all soft eyed for the whisper of it.

"I'll be right back, kay?" Bit off a watery sort of 'awe', before he opened his mouth and spoke more than above a whisper. Which was hard, because he was really excited to get praise from their Queen, plus medals!

Badass shiny pieces of, whatever. He wasn't sure if he cared about them, but he was happy to receive one on Faustites behalf, then quickly snaged his own. He figured it'd get added to the odd collection of sparkly things he'd let Haymitch play with: medals, strings, rift stuff , etcetera. It was the absolute goddamned best sort of show when he pinned 'em to the rift-rats, n let his Haykitten loose to practice hunting down youma properly.

Then s**t was absolutely happening - N' albite whistled low from Faustites side; dmired the show before them. He had to hand it to Metallia and their Queen.

Them n Aqua all had some damn good taste in men.

Medal in hand he'd retrieved from the remained box, and Prehnite watched, at first. With quiet curiosity and brow raised high, noted none of what crossed the others faces spoke of knowledge as to what was about to occur.

The queens soft chimelike tenor, steady gait, like she knew some special secret thing that they didn't ---- then there was the initial shock of the thing. The sight of her hand in Jet's chest, and however often experienced one was with a thing. The panged sympathy didn't die away, and neither did the flit of concern that crossed his face at the sight of Jet in the throws of pain for it. How he looked like he'd die twice over -- and then --- he looked so utterly, absolutely, alive.

"Oh....well." Prehnite's short sprint with panic faded and his pride grew in its place. Prehnite laughed, because ******** it all - what else could he do but enjoy this?

Imagined how it must've been an icepick of salt in the wound for Ganymede, well deserved. He wondered if their dearest princess would simply die on the spot. If her precious glittery soul would peter out and burst in her chest; like so much shattered glass.

Like laurelites joy.

The look on his face held the sharpest ******** glee, like he'd been stabbed with happiness and he couldn't help but applaud Jet.

Their newest General king.

He was hesitant to stand after his sister chided him for daring to get up. He looked over at her, at the mess of Ganymede, until the Queen spoke. His attention drew to her, to the medals displayed in the box, each pinned neatly against the backing. They were heartening, in their own way, but he began to see their emptiness when the Princess quipped that they were only trifles. Tidbits scattered along the long road to world domination.

It roused an old, cindered feeling in him that he would rather have smothered. Clenched his jaw for it, even as Albite tried to soothe.

He looked at Lysithea again. Wondered how he could ever do better —

He felt like he zoned out. He didn't remember accepting a medal from Waru, but it was there in his hand. The box Laurelite was holding had vanished. Laurelite had vanished. Catching up, he realized she was standing in front of Jet. Her hand was in his chest, and he felt a delayed shock for it — wondered what Jet might've said, or done, to warrant his starseed getting pulled. No one else looked worried; she must've said something before hand that he'd lost in those seconds of lapsed awareness.

He felt the low song of tension in his bones, for how he should be ready to fight something at the Queen's beck, whether Aqua or the rest of them, should they interfere — but he saw Jet's uniform shimmer and shift. Lengthen. Embolden. Encrust with pearl and grandeur. Soon, he wasn't simply Jet, but General King Jet.

He brought home a princess, and achieved sovereignty. It was well deserved for a stunt like that.

"Look at you," he murmured. "Get to do Axinite's promotions for him." Not that Faustite intended to look in Axinite's general direction anytime soon.

Bloodstone's eyes widened just slightly when the Queen approached Jet, and imbued him with the power of a General King. Maybe it was a surprise because it had been since the introduction of Axinite and the others that they'd had a new General Sovereign. Not since the Queen herself was made Queen.

He cast a curious glance towards Carnallite, even if his expression was unreadable. He had to wonder what it would take to convince the Queen for another promotion.

Maybe in a few months… after all, he was only just promoted to General, thanks to his own ambition.

-

Kamacite was momentarily concerned when the Queen stuck her hand into Jet's chest. He didn't have a close relationship with Jet, but they'd worked together before. And Jet seemed to take to heart when Kamacite commented on how Corrupted Senshi was a term of antiquity. They weren't corrupted because it only implied there was something pure about them before.

He glanced anxiously from Axinite to Cymophane, wondering if they were going to try and do something. Except it turned out they didn't have to do anything. In spite of the pain Jet was obviously feeling, the power the Queen bestowed on him left them with a new General King.

For another few moments, Kamacite was astounded, and then he wilted a bit.

Aquamarine was going to be insufferable now more than ever.

Ganymede’s laughter died out like it had never been.

She wouldn’t cower, not in fear or sadness. She wasn’t afraid, because she knew what would happen to her. She’d been through this before. Either she would die here, in the throne room, or they’d keep her for some other purpose and torture her the same as last time. Maybe they’d give her another brand, feed her another starseed, keep her in another cage. The important thing was that they couldn’t corrupt her and they couldn’t destroy her starseed. When they killed her, Ganymede would live again some day.

She hoped the next one was just as much of a pain in the Negaverse’s collective a**.

Sadness was the more difficult of the two to suppress, but she forced herself to do it. She didn’t let herself think of Valhalla and their children. She squashed all memory of the starseed Jet took when he escaped. All her friends and allies, she put them out of her mind. They would live on without her. Perhaps, when they found a way to destroy Metallia, some of them would do so in her name.

Ganymede glared at Laurelite and her new General King. She ignored the sinking of her stomach, and the catch in her throat. She fought through the pain that tried to pull her under.

“Congrats on the death sentence,” she sneered.

Jet was a target before.

He was an even bigger one now.

-

Carnallite shared both Bloodstone’s surprise and his unreadable expression. She met his gaze but had no reaction.

From what little she knew of Jet, he was dedicated and decisive — young, but he didn’t seem to suffer for it. That he made for a dependable General seemed to indicate that he would do equally well as a General King.

More than anything, Carnallite envied his power.

-

Cymophane would have been on the edge of his seat if he had one to sit on. The Queen stuck her hand in Jet’s chest. Aquamarine looked like he’d murder someone for it. Then Jet was a General King kneeling like a knight in front of his Queen. (Not like White Moon Knights, but… fairytales and s**t. Medieval chivalry kinds of things.) Aquamarine looked faint. Some of the others looked shocked and amazed.

It was an unexpected turn of events, but not an unwelcome one.

“Woah…” Cymophane breathed.

Clearly he’d picked the right General. (Nevermind that he hadn’t exactly picked Jet. He’d just run into him and decided to roll with it.)

Someone was clapping. Prehnite? Cymophane thought that was his name. He had the right idea, whatever his name was. Cymophane joined him. He seemed a bit clumsy about it while still under the illusion, but he was no less enthusiastic than he would have been otherwise.

The appearance of the Queen had Lysithea freezing, growing very still, and honestly…wanting to make herself too small to see. She was still kneeling by the Princess and her eyes flickered to her for a moment before watching the handing out of the medals and then the promotion of Jet to a General King of his own and she sucked in a soft breath, not quite knowing what to do.

The Princess gave another angry few words and she wrinkled her nose at the way the woman still had the strength to keep painting the target on her back in a brighter hue.

…She was caught. She was…well. She was finished.

Surely there was no way out for her in this…honestly…death would be the best but…maybe they could…maybe Lysithea could try and talk to her…see if she would be interested in joining them…it…was unlikely but. It was worth a try.

Quietly she used her last bit of healing on the Princess and rocked back to sit on her heels. There was nothing more for her to do right now, but…there was a lot to think about.

Laurelite gave Jet a moment to take it in, just as she gave the others a moment to absorb everything as well. Jet had been through enough tonight, she wasn’t going to keep him here for much longer. He was tired, she knew how draining this would have been already–if he hadn’t just come from battle, and hadn’t just been at the hands of their enemy for so long, too.

When he knelt, she did the same.

It was tender. It was human.

She never shed the mantle of Queen, never seemed small or inferior, not like this.

“I want you to make sure you take adequate time to heal. We’ll talk about what’s changing when you’re in better shape. I have only one more thing for you tonight. I don’t think there’s a more appropriate time, so you’ll have to forgive me for holding you for a moment longer. I’ve had this for a long time,” she said, and held out her hands.

Something shimmered briefly, but it took only a second for it to fully manifest. She offered it without introducing it; she didn’t think Jet would have a difficult time identifying his brother’s dagger.

The blade was silver, still sharp. It tapered into three sharp points, and was every bit beautiful as it was lethal. The handle was wrapped in purple leather. It was clearly used; there were distinct impressions on the handle where someone had held it before.

“I’m very proud of you, Jet. I think he would have been, too.”

The new power was overwhelming. He could feel it coursing through him, the pulse of his heart heavier than he remembered. Maybe it was the Chaos, or maybe adrenaline, or exhaustion. The pain was still there, but momentarily forgotten as the Queen knelt with him.

The gesture was… strangely intimate. Not in the romantic sense, but it made him feel as though she meant everything she said and did. This wasn’t just some quick way to rub salt in Ganymede’s wounds. Instead it felt as though the Queen had actually anticipated this, planned this.

It was even more apparent when she held out his brother’s dagger for him.

Jet’s breath hitched as he reached out a shaky hand to take the dagger from her. It was heavy in his hand. The weight of memories and lost years thanks to a war that he hadn’t realized existed until the moment it was too late.

Would things have been different had his brother told him about the Negaverse? He’d talked to him about how proud he was of a promotion he’d gotten, but couldn’t tell him what his job was. If he’d been able to help his brother, would things have been different?

Jet held the dagger flat against his chest, and he realized then that it wasn’t just any purple that paired with his teal, but the same color purple his brother once wore.

“Thank you--” he tried to say as his eyes grew hot with tears. He could sense everyone else around them, could hear how a couple applauded, how others seemed to just stare in surprise. Ganymede congratulated him on his death sentence, but he didn’t care what she said. His attention was focused on the Queen and on Aquamarine’s hand still in his own.

His breath hitched again on a quiet sob, and he desperately tried to blink back the tears filling his eyes, despite one still being bandaged. He could not start crying in front of everyone. In front of the Queen. In front of Ganymede. Maybe they would just think he was delirious with pain instead of overcome with emotion?
