She really didn’t want to get into the intricacies of what a midwife did besides delivery. Maybe once all this was over she would put the alkidike in contact with the woman herself, but right now Maritza could only force herself to breath through a particularly painful contraction that had her digging her nails into the armrest of the settee.
It was only when it had passed and Maritza was able to relax some that she responded. Even then her features were pinched and sweaty. “She’s not going to be here in time. The baby is coming now.” She snarled; teeth gritting once more. The earthling pulled up the edges of her dress and reached down to check…and yeah, this was happening. “Okay…help me spread the bedding out over the settee. When it’s ready the baby is going to come out and I need you to help catch it.”

"Catch it?!" Vermina couldn't help gawking. "By Aisha, how is that baby coming out of you? Are you vomiting it up? Will it be shooting out of your bottom like fecal matter?" She shook her head and ran a hand through her short dreads. The earthling was in obvious pain. What was this whole childbirth thing?! Still, morbid curiosity helped her manage to start spreading the sheets as directed. "Why is there so much pain for what is supposed to be a blessing?"

“DO NOT COMPARE CHILDBIRTH TO-“ Something in Maritza just snapped. She’d never been one for patience to begin with, especially when it came to teaching moments. A great surge of nausea overcame her, and thanks to some quick thinking Maritza was able to grab an unfortunate vase to expel her stomach into.
The act itself allowed her to move out of the alkidike’s way as she worked. “It’s painful because something that grew inside of me is being pushed out. Have you….have you ever been stabbed? It’s like that. Your body recognizes that it’s not meant to be there and there won’t be any relief until it’s gone.” She motioned vaguely to her lower half and without much preamble Maritza started to push. Whether or not the alkidike was going to participate at this point was beyond her; she’d grab the kid herself if she had to.

Vermina's brow rose with the sudden snarl. The earthling sure was angry. Vomit! Was that the baby?! She leaned a tiny bit closer to see, but nothing that slid into the vase seemed solid enough to be a baby. This seemed an utterly miserable way to bring life to the world! Her gaze lowered suspiciously to the earthling's lower half being gestured at. So the baby come out... down there. "Not purposely," she murmured with a shake of her head. Accidentally catching herself with a dagger or knife had happened on more than one occasion, but she couldn't recall being in the agony that Maritza was. She wanted to leave!
Of course... that just made her rise to the challenge a little more. She wasn't going to be outdone by something that earthling females went through all the time! She had said she would help, and she would see it through to the end!
Then she witnessed something that she had never thought to witness before, and frankly never wanted to see again. Yet her hands reached forward to receive the tiny, squirming mass into the world. "Aisha preserve us," she gasped out, raising the baby up for Maritza to take. She needed to not be holding that anymore!

As much as she adored her children, birth and pregnancy were processes that Maritza could have lived without. The immediate relief that consumed her the moment her child exited her body left her muscles weak. Chest heaving and sweaty, the earthling woman took the infant onto her chest and placed her mouth atop its own to clear it’s airways. By the time she was spitting the fluids out to the side the little one was crying and making themselves known.
She sank back into the settee and just absorbed the moment. A squalling, dirty little one pressed ontop of her chest and the traumatized Aishan at her feet…”Thank you…”

The whole process left the alkidike wondering how the contents of her stomach had managed to stay in place! That had been, in a word, disgusting. To say the least! Never mind that now the mother was actively sucking out those various fluids! Oh Aisha, the fluids..... Water! She was now grateful for the two pots prepared! She quickly dunked her hands into one pot to rinse the mess off and to take a moment to catch her breath. Scrubbing her hands firmly with one blanket, she grabbed the other water to set at Maritza's side. She looked between the mother and the squalling babe for a moment before nodding. "You're welcome." She sat back on the floor, still easily able to see the new life. "So... it's okay? The baby?"

Still clutching the babe to her chest, Maritza reached down with a shaking hand to take a bit of cloth – she wasn’t sure what – in her hand and dip it in the water. As she brushed it over her child, doing her best to be thorough but still quick – she noticed a few key details. “She’s fine. A little small…but fine.” She’d come early with a stubbornness that seemed to run in her blood, but from what Maritza could see she looked fine. “Could you hand me a dry blanket? I don’t want her to get cold.”

She ended up using the entire blanket to continue scrubbing at her hands and arms. They looked clean, but what she had just assisted with was going to require more than a rinse in water to recover from. Still, now that the worst seemed to be over.. it was fascinating to see the result. A teeny mother holding the tiniest baby. That small little bean had gone through such trauma just to enter the world. It was.. eye opening. With a light nod, she plucked up a blanket and laid it over the pair. "If I may.. what is it? A female?"

At some point they would need to cut the cord and made sure everything else had exited Maritza, but she didn't want to scar the alkidike further. Surely all the noise from within should have at least alerted someone out on the street, or her next door neighbors, so with any luck someone would drop by to check in. Looking outside, she could see that the evening was settling in and Maritza knew that even if they hadn't been loud enough that her family would show up soon.
Tucking the blanket in around them, Maritza maneuvered her child so that the little one was tucked neatly against her chest and that seemed to calm it. "Yes, a little girl. I now have two daugthers and two sons."

She couldn't help herself as she inched forward along the floor for a closer look at the pair. She had heard that earthling births were complicated, but this had been completely unexpected. Honestly, she couldn't wait to tell her wife and daughters about the experience. If anything was going to give credit to the earthling species, it was this birth process! Watching the tiny form calm down against its mother's chest, Vermina found herself smiling. An awful experience, for certain! Yet, also undeniably valuable.
