Another gargled gasp, and with the sword's wet unsheathing came a slow pool of blood. Faustite whined something strained into the dirt as he collapsed against it, spent, mind racing for all the paths in which this s**t situation led to death. Was there an escape?

However slowly, he turned on his side with a pained grunt. His gored hand was useless to him; he pinned it by the wrist behind his head. Each breath came strained, laced with a groan. As he raised his good hand up, he emptied his subspace pocket of all it contained, with every item littering the floor before him.

She'd left, but he couldn't say for how long. As his breathing quickened, rasped, and wetted, he pawed through a hillock of quick, calorie dense snacks. Packages of beef jerky and granola bars were tossed aside, a heavy mason jar of tea cookies rolled away from him, some strange cellophane-wrapped snacks whose names were in a foreign language, and he paused at the bracelet he'd stolen from Velvet's past. Even that seemed pointless; what good were memories here?

He reached the bottom of his pile, disappointed, with dread growing on his conscience. His breaths grew more labored; dragging his good arm around became a nearly insurmountable task.

His hand passed over a smooth, black card and he examined it with the same dying threads of critical thinking that he applied to all the others. He remembered it was a business card, but before he checked the front, it fluttered out of his hand and landed in his ever-expanding pool of black blood.

When the blood touched the card, the black ink seemed to melt off of it. It pooled in rapid, heavy drops, spilling to the floor and puddling as if a faucet had been turning on. The ink mixed with blood and spilled across the floor. And then, it stretched. It grew, upright. It defied all logic, all laws of nature.

It took form.

In only a matter of seconds, Almadel stepped out of the black slick and brushed himself off as if the mess was distasteful, but he arrived as immaculate as ever.

Except, his face screwed up into a scowl.

“I said a drop of blood, didn’t I? I don’t need all of it. What is this, what are you doing?”

This did not look like business, unless Faustite was preparing to offer him–what, his organs? Some snacks? –Oh, those did look good, though.

Drawing a few scraping breaths, Faustite stared up at the formation. He thought he must be dead already. Wasn't he, if he was seeing this? Was Metallia taking form to demand her power back before his body gave out?

No — he knew that shape — a few caught seconds passed before he pulled a name from his hypoxic mind. The card — he'd nearly forgotten that he left it there.

"Almadel," he breathed, "Need your help. Get me back to Earth." Another desperate breath, "Negaspace. Take anything. Take her — take her ******** sword," and he pointed toward it with his hale hand, to where it lay bloodied and discarded in the corner of the barracks.

Tanais had walked away, though he couldn't say for how long. Almadel's lack of auric presence was a wondrous boon for keeping her uninformed.

"Hurry," he panted a few quick breaths, "before she comes back."

Almadel was never easy to read, but he didn’t seem like he was out of place in the chaos of the situation. Faustite’s condition did nothing to rattle him, and he didn’t need to be told twice to take something. With something probably too close to a skip in his step, he retrieved the sword first; he held it for only a second before it flickered out of existence.

It was gone before he’d made his way back to Faustite. “Who is ‘she’?” he asked, hooking one arm around Faustite as he heaved him up.

He had a strong grip and moved Faustite effortlessly, only the slightest bit cautious of his condition. “I don’t have a pass to Negaspace, I’m afraid. But I can do Earth. You might feel a little sick afterwards, if you have to throw up, do it away from me.”

A warning only. It was all Faustite had before Almadel and Faustite flickered out of the room.

He didn’t know many places on Earth, but he favored the hill on the outskirts of Destiny City. He hoped Faustite did, too

There were no words to describe the tumble of emotions Tanais felt when she had gathered herself enough to check on her dying captive. She'd expected a corpse. Finding nothing at all left her rattled... angry, confused, even a bit relieved. She'd cursed inventively as she stared at the pool of blood on the ground, only evidence she'd ever had a general bleeding out on her wonder.

Had he teleported back? She'd been sure the distance was too far for him, but maybe she'd miscalculated... maybe he'd managed to contact one of his general sovereigns and they'd come for him. Maybe Metallia had reached out and yanked him back to her. The thought that any chaose entity could reach here made her sick... but bodies did not just vanish, even half-youma ones.

Whatever had taken him had, in its way, saved her too. He might still die, wherever he was, might be dead even now. She wasn't sure if she'd ever know, unless they met on the battle field. It left her feeling a little lighter, among everything else. And Mars had felt some of its first bloodshed in a thousand years. She didn't know if it would be proud of her for that, if that damned lion would be impressed. Maybe.

Drawing a deep breath and letting it out in a long woosh, she let the magic take her back to Earth, more interested in drinking until the feelings went away than anything else at the moment.

"Tanais," he breathed.

The lurch of going upright nearly put him out; Faustite was still blinking away his blindness when Almadel spoke again. He hadn't caught all of it, but he heard being sick, and there were no more sand-bitten walls, no more spartan bunks.

Only the stains of his trespass were left behind.
