"Well, if you need more cake so that you can keep one upping each other forever, I can probably figure something out," said Sadie with a mischievous grin. "Maybe not this fancy all the time, but-"

She had her sources.

"Oh, maybe I can even bring more cake to the space picnic."

Maybe she could decorate it differently that time, with stars, or little chocolates that looked like mermaid tails. There were a lot of options, and this time she'd have plenty of time to think about how to make it all cute and fun.

In the meantime, she went for another piece of this cake, and found herself settling into a comfortable rhythm of conversation with an old friend, and a new one.

"I mean," Ignacio's laugh was as bright and cheerful as ever, bolstered by being around both his best friend and his husband, "look, you're not gonna hear me complain about being brought more cake."

Maybe not this fancy all the time, no. She didn't need to be carving little figurines of them to put on cakes all the time, either. This one felt special. Warming.

Almost as warming as the company.

"A space picnic with a cake of all things feels like a perfect compliment, too."

He was almost as excited for that as he was for all of this -- this good company, the fact that his friends were getting along, the fact that everything generally felt nice. Worries escaped to the back of his mind, and he happily settled into a conversation that didn't involve smashing more cakes into faces.

Richard chuckled, shooting Ignacio a playful wink and a grin full of mischief. "One-upping him is half the fun."

He could remember when they were younger and Richard had locked onto something that regularly made Ignacio happy--the rush, the breeze through his hair, the sound of his feet hitting concrete and pavement. He might have encouraged that by regularly dashing after him and encouraging him to go even faster.

He had trouble catching Ignacio these days, but that was neither here nor there--

"But no, seriously, I look forward to it! And this cake is delicious, by the way."

And with that said, he went for another bite, enthusiastically joining the conversation at the same time.
