Misha's revelation only became obvious after it was said; Eion rolled his eyes, though not at Misha so much as at his unending irritation with glamours and their ********. However frustrating, the information was helpful for placing Misha within the context of the Negaverse. Knew Cymophane was helpful enough.

Mentally, he revisited the thought of those two dating. Or ********. Or both. It was too difficult, he decided, to picture Yuuri doing either one of those. His friend had always been the solemn sort, and he had never known Yuuri while he was in a relationship. He'd expect some palpable difference in his friend. Maybe, someday, he'd finally find someone, though the implications would be difficult for Eion (not that he deserved to share in his friend's life).

Eion crossed and uncrossed his thumbs around the warm teacup. He didn't know Yuuri could edit videos. Though, he supposed he didn't know much about Yuuri. Besides being quiet, the pair could only spend, at most, three hours together outside of their Negaverse duties. With Faustite being perpetually kept busy, he hadn't the time to visit Kamacite much, and it always seemed intrusive for Faustite to simply take his paperwork and go finish it in Kamacite's office with him. Kamacite valued his alone time; thus, even in plainclothes incidents like these, Eion often struggled to interrupt his friend's solitude.

He looked at Yuuri when the boy next spoke, and he blinked without recognition for a moment. Knew the name, but couldn't add a face to it — until he recalled enough about Lauri's apartment to recognize the closest thing Lauri had to a child. Smiled for that, and scoffed out a little laugh. Of all the ******** things —

"Met Yuuri when I stepped on a nail. Went through my shoe; he must've heard me." He blew on his tea, then took a sip. "Took me to Lauri's place. Auë. Found out we both knew him.

"What happened to him? Haven't seen him since I came back." Hadn't seen Schörl, either, though he didn't mind that terribly.

Misha blinked and continued to stare between Yuuri and Eion, struggling to conceal his own curiosity.

“I have no idea who Auë is,” he said honestly.

He might have heard the name before in passing. People were always talking around the castle, and in all the nooks and crannies of the Dark Kingdom. Gossip was quick to spread, but Misha had no idea if any of it was relevant. Maybe he did hear the name. Maybe he didn’t; there were a lot of names to keep track of. One thing was certain, he hadn’t heard it from Yuuri.

“Lauri. Is he one of the people you lived with?” Misha asked, fastening his stare onto Yuuri. “Your old team. Oh, but you said you weren’t considered part of the team, didn’t you? Because you had a different General? Or something. You never talk about any of them. Can’t say I blame you if they just up and disappeared, but…”

Misha shrugged as if to say, Can you blame me for being curious?

Yuuri tensed, his fingers pressing hard against the ceramic of the mug in his hands. He felt as though the air had left his lungs, as though sound faded momentarily from the room. He should have known that talking about anything would have brought things up that he didn’t want to revisit.

Because not knowing was possibly worse than having closure.

He shook his head, but he couldn’t manage to open his mouth to respond. How could they spring something like that on him and expect him to be able to answer in such a casual setting? How could he possibly be expected to relive the worst two years of his life like it was nothing? Two years of sitting and waiting. And waiting. And then searching. And then asking for updates. And then hearing nothing.

Having Faustite back was a miracle to him. To have one of them back-- where in reality the only two he truly cared about were Faustite and Auë. The others? He couldn’t recall knowing them well enough to hold much fondness. Even his General hadn’t been kind enough to him for Yuuri to care that he was missing, or turned traitor, or dead.

“I don’t know.”

He thought he said it out loud, but his voice was silent in his ears.

While Misha watched Yuuri, Eion watched Misha. Cymophane, he reminded himself, and he mused that Misha was really quite talkative. Loose-lipped, he supposed, or more like Waru in that silence was natively uncomfortable. They needed noise, so they made noise with their mouths.

But noise — that noise — gave Yuuri reason to be uncomfortable. Misha pried and Yuuri froze, and Eion was bystander to that conversation. Part of it, but not. Witness to a one-sided dialogue.

Eion swallowed. What were people supposed to do here? He wasn't a person — hadn't been in years — but he also couldn't sit around and watch Yuuri shut down like an overheated tablet in his scalding grip. He could only think of how he'd get a youma to desist. But a human? He'd have to ask Yuuri about what he should've said later.

"Drop it, Misha." And he dropped his attention to his cup to try to lessen the aggressiveness of his words. "Better we talk about something else."

He thought about what that something else could be. Thought he could ask about the offer of jam, since he was fairly certain that was a Russian tea tradition that he hadn't tried before, but that might bore them. Could ask Misha how he joined the Negaverse, but those conversations weren't always points of pride, and Eion wanted at least five seconds away from work. He thought about not suggesting anything, but Misha might get defensive and drive the conversation back to when he slapped Yuuri.

People were too ******** complicated.

So he asked what had been on his mind, consequences be damned. "Are you two dating?"

Misha wanted to snap, wanted to say I know when to drop something, thanks, but he held the reaction back and put on another smile, because the chatty, smiling airhead was what he preferred to be.

Most of the time, anyway.

He knew Yuuri was getting worked up, feeling uncomfortable. He could see it on Yuuri’s face, in the way he’d tensed up. Yuuri didn’t want to talk about it, or couldn’t, and that was okay. Disappointing, because it meant Misha had to stay in the dark about everything, but still okay. Yuuri would talk about it when he wanted to, when he felt comfortable enough to do so. Misha would just have to remain patient.

What he wouldn’t do was remain seated. Not where he was, at least. Misha rose and perched onto the arm of Yuuri’s chair — not so close as to seem smothering, but close enough that Yuuri might take some comfort from his presence. A single hand went to Yuuri’s shoulder, his touch light and gentle — a reminder to Yuuri that he wasn’t alone.

Dating?”

Misha blinked, then laughed, unable to suppress the soft snickering.

“We’re just friends,” he explained. “Not that Yuuri isn’t cute, because he is, but I don’t think I’m his type, and he isn’t really mine. What makes you think we’d be dating? I haven’t even been half as affectionate with him around other people as I would be if we were alone.”

Yuuri pressed his lips tighter together when Eion made sure the topic was changed. He appreciated it, of course. But he had to wonder if his friends now just thought of him as someone who couldn’t talk about anything. Or maybe that he didn’t trust them? Which was not the case at all. He just didn’t know if he was ready to say anything. His heart still ached thinking of when Faustite was gone. How was he supposed to explain how he felt at the unknown loss of the others?

He glanced up at Misha when he moved to sit on the arm of his chair, grateful for the comfort, and Yuuri leaned a little against his side as he lifted the mug to sip at his tea--

And very nearly spat it out. But that would have been highly impolite, so instead he swallowed the still very hot tea and hissed at the pain of it going down his throat-- the wrong way. He coughed, trying to clear his airway of the liquid that was no longer there, and just ended up looking like a cat that was hacking up a furball.

“Yes, just-- friends,” Yuuri choked out, and then proceeded to cough into his arm.

Not dating, but Misha was sitting on the arm of Yuuri's chair. And touching Yuuri. And Yuuri wasn't flinching away like he got scalded. And they lived together. With the brother, sure, but — maybe Yuuri was dating the brother? Or Justice. Probably Justice.

Or Yuuri wasn't dating anyone at all, and Eion was quietly making up excuses to stay his own interests, but he wasn't going to consider that one

Or maybe, judging by Misha's qualifier, they were ******** and roommates. But not dating. However that worked.

If that worked.

Eion squinted at the pair as he absently swirled the tea in his Girl Boss mug. "Friends… With benefits? Thought that, when two people lived together, they were involved somehow." Not that he ever experienced roommate life for himself, but that's what he gathered from his brief stints out for energy gathering. People lived together because they were related, or loved each other, or were sleeping with each other often enough to warrant the convenience.

Though that might also imply… Grimacing, Eion shelved that thought.

Misha’s laughter increased in strength and volume.

He tried to hold it back, if only because Eion seemed sort of prickly, and Misha didn’t want Eion to assume he was laughing at him.

Maybe he was laughing at him? He certainly wasn’t laughing with him, didn’t even know if Eion knew how to laugh. (Couldn’t blame him, really, what with all the fire he usually had to deal with. Must make life awfully uncomfortable, not to mention inconvenient.) Misha preferred to think of it more as laughing at the situation. Because it was funny. Truly hilarious.

When he managed to get himself under control again, Misha said, “I mean, I guess Yuuri doing all my editing is technically a benefit? But I pay him for that, so…”

He snickered again and glanced at Yuuri, green eyes bright with mirth. “Does that make me your sugar daddy, do you think?”

Yuuri had no idea what to say to all of that. Eion was assuming that he and Misha were involved. He most certainly was not sexually involved with Misha! And he just stared, petrified at both Eion and then Misha for continuing to joke about it.

“Excuse me,” he said politely as he pushed himself up from the couch, his cheeks burning because he could only imagine how this conversation was going to go. Soon they would be asking him if he was sexually involved with anyone. “I have an upset stomach I think. Eion, it was nice to see you. Please stop by any time,” he at least managed to say before making a break for the bathroom. He would just hide in there for the rest of the day if he had to.

Anything to stay out of the speculation of what he did in his private life, which he liked to keep private.

Eion looked at Misha, seriously considering the ramifications of the phrase sugar daddy and all that could mean. He knew full well what a sugar daddy usually was, but they insisted they weren't sleeping together, or even friends with benefits… So…

"Confusing," Eion mumbled to himself.

What was more confusing was Yuuri's abrupt rise, flush, and exit. He looked deeply unsettled, and Eion furrowed his brows as he watched his friend leave. That left him with Misha, who didn't seem terribly fond of him, and who he didn't know well enough to engage in conversation (which was, he supposed, a reason to engage someone in conversation, but being so unsocialized from years in the Rift, he doubted that fighting him in his living room was a commendable way to get to know him, unlike with youma). And he didn't know enough small talk topics to start something more mundane.

And he was still confused about Yuuri. Pointing after where he disappeared, he asked Misha, "Was it something I said?" He stared again where Yuuri was, as if that would grant him an answer.

It didn't.

"Think I've stayed long enough," he decided as he rose. "Thanks for the tea."

“Probably something we both said.”

Misha stared after Yuuri. Concern warred with amusement, but he assumed Yuuri was embarrassed more than anything else, so he didn’t go after him to check if he was okay just yet. Sometimes Yuuri needed the chance to hide away and let himself feel whatever he needed to feel without people staring at him, before he eventually came back out and things returned to normal. Misha would give him the chance to let his face cool off before encouraging him out of hiding.

He wore a smile for Eion, who wasn’t so bad even if Misha didn’t entirely know what to make of him just yet. At least the feeling seemed mutual.

“Anytime,” he said, leading Eion to the door since that was the polite thing to do. Not that many people in Misha’s life ever cared about being polite. “Sorry for the rough start. Yuuri’s right, though. You can drop by whenever you want.”

Misha wondered if he should clarify and insist that Eion not be on fire when he did so, but he figured that was obvious. He didn’t want to be rude by accidentally treating Eion like he lacked the common sense to figure that out for himself.

Being walked to the door was one of the most familiar gestures to happen that day. It reminded him much of escorting others through the Rift, through the Hall of Shadows. Felt interesting to be on the other side of that, like he was someone worth keeping an eye on, or protecting. Doubted that's what it meant, but he would take the mixed-to-positive conclusion to a stressful hour of socializing.

Wasn't sure if it was eustress or distress, and chose to figure it was both.

"Thanks. Don't make a habit of being human, but." He decided to try more often. It's likely what Yuuri would want, since his friend often reminded him that he was still human. Wasn't sure what the purpose of that was, but that was a question for Yuuri when his stomach wasn't out to get him. Or his nerves. Or his conversation partners. Which meant, of course, not today.

He gave Misha a gentle nod, and, not knowing what else to do, excused himself back out into the cold. Instantly his arms wrapped about himself, as if those spindly things would box in his heat, and he started on the trail back to the gas station with a head full of airy what-ifs.
