Quest - Dancer/Stage 3 - WC 670
She sat on the bench in the back room with one foot resting over the thigh of her other leg. She was rubbing the arch of her too as it was particularly sore after the dance routine she’d just done. Kalliope was getting to the point where dancing for too long hurt her feet or her back. She knew she only had a few more years of dancing left in her before it became too much for her to bear. It was a thought that made her frown. Dancing had been what kept her going, still was on some levels, and it had more than saved her and her friends from starving when things were quiet and business wasn’t as booming. Now she didn’t need to worry too much about putting food on the table since she was married and her husband was a great provider, but some things ran deep. Old habits and all that.
The door to the dressing room was knocked upon before being pushed open. The old woman that ran the theater that she’d been performing at lately came hobbling in with a small smile on her face.
“You did wonderful, as always.” She said to break the silence. “I did have a question I would like to ask you though, if you’ve the time.” She seemed to have a gleam in her eyes as she waited for Kalli to respond.
Kalliope only eyed her for a second before nodding her head. “Sure, I’ve time. I’m not due to dance for another hour.” She had to share the stage with several other girls after all.
“Good. Good.” The woman made her way over to the bench and took up residence next to the dancer. She sat and wiggled until she was comfortable then sighed as she stared straight forward. “I was a dancer once you know.”
This caused Kalliope to arch a brow slightly in curiosity. She wasn’t so sure where this was going.
“I’ve taken a notice of how you seem to be more sore lately.”
“Oh.” Kalli paled a little. “You don’t have to worry. I can still dance.” She worried that she was going to be told not to come back. She wasn’t sure what she’d do if she couldn’t dance anymore.
“No, I know that.” The old woman nodded her head. “You shouldn’t have to though.” It was then that the woman spared her a sideways glance, looking at her only from the corner of her eye. “I believe you have the skills, and patience, to teach the younger girls how to dance. Since you learned a lot from being in Jauhar and living here I would say you are equipped with several dances.” As she spoke she turned her head toward Kalliope.
Silence hung thick in the air as Kalli held her breath for a minute. The woman seemed to wait a bit longer before continuing too.
“So how about it? Would you like to be the new dance instructor here? I’m too old to flounce about like you young girls.” The woman smiled wide as she set the offer on the proverbial table for the Oban dancer next to her.
“Wha-.. Oh.. Wow.” She tried to find the words to make a coherent sentence. “I.. I would love to.” Kalli thought that perhaps teaching dance would be the greatest thing. Not only could she continue to dance, here and there and when she taught, but she could pass along the dances she’d learned while traveling.
“Perfect. I’ll let the other girls know they have a new instructor starting tomorrow.” The old woman gave a pat to Kalli’s leg then got up so that she could head for the door. “You are certainly saving this old woman from breaking a leg, so thank you.”
“I should be thanking you.” Kalli chuckled a bit.
Once the woman left Kalli couldn’t help the giddy squeal that left her. She couldn’t wait to tell Gael and her kids about the opportunity she’d been given.
(( Kalli is retiring as a full time dancer and taking up the mantle of dance instructor at a local theater. ))
