Prompt 11 (Snowball Mini-Game Tie In): What would winter be without snowball fights? Maybe you were just out walking, maybe you were looking for trouble, maybe it was all your idea--but a snowball fight has started, and you're in the middle of it. Are you an innocent bystander who now has to flee? Do you decide to join in and participate? Or, were you the one lying in wait, preparing to attack someone? Maybe it was random, maybe the target was selected--either way, snow is flying and you need to react, fast.
Regula aka Super Sailor Athalia
Reports of several disturbances had come in thick and fast within the space for thirty minutes and at first there had been considerable concern across all channels. Neighbourhoods were 'under attack', but when they had moved towards the scene, pulled themselves out of the squad car and towards the scene, they couldn't hear panicked shrieks or any scuffles. For all intents and purposes the area was quiet and even as they split up, each taking a side of the road, Regula couldn't see anything completely out of the ordinary.
There were mounds of snow piled high along the sides of the road, likely courtesy of either homeowners or their unfortunate offspring and the necessity to clean the path again after another flurry of snow... but beyond that, no blood, now torn clothing and very little sign of disturbance anywhere. Well, that wasn't entirely accurate and the further he made it down the street the more acutely aware he became of the footsteps scattered all over the place. Snow kicked up and disturbed in the immediate vicinity that would seem to imply that at some stage people had certainly been here.
Had a threat of the cops been enough to send them scampering?
He pursed his lips as he kept walking, pausing here and there to inspect the area for further signs of what had happened until he heard a faint 'crunch' from behind a nearby wall. So there were people here, they were simply hiding and he had to wonder why.
Another cursory glance at what lay around him and he noticed that one mound had been disturbed, it didn't look quite as neat as the others and in those moments he realised -
"Take cover!" he yelled as he very dramatically plunged behind a car, a touch too late as a flurry of snowballs hailed down from behind the nearest garden wall towards him and coated his lower half in an inch or two of snow. Fortunately it slid off and there wouldn't be any lasting damage, but he certainly knew why they'd been called to a disturbance now. It seemed like some of the kids had become a touch over excitable and by extension, were targeting anything and anyone that might come in to their warzone.
...That included innocent bystanders.
"Mate we've got one choice and one choice only if we want to get through this," Regula called out across the street as he shook off a leg.
"What's that?" he heard the reply come back.
"We need to win, and by win I mean we have to stomp them into the ground," he shot back and glanced over his shoulder. He could hear them moving, they were trying to flank him and he knew all too well that the mound that had caught his eye earlier was not unmanned. They were outnumbered, they were outgunned but in theory they were smarter than their opponents so it stood to reason that if they defeated them soundly then they could have a frank and open discussion about the wonders of snowballs fights and more importantly, the rules of engagement.
"I did not anticipate that I would spend part of my day beating kids up with snowballs," his partner mused and then released a gusty sigh. "All right, let's do this. For the honour of our entire generation."
"Sweet," Regula replied and swung round from behind the car.
What came after was a fight for the 'ages' and it wasn't exactly clear who may, or may not have won, but at the very least they would manage to convince the kids to be more selective about who they targeted in the future... Or at least slightly more selective for the rest of the day anyway.
