“I- I appreciate that. If uh, if he asks you too, you should um, you should answer him, and things, ok?” He cleared his throat, looking at his feet.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to say something awkward.” He glanced back up.

“Thank you I’ll um; I’ll text you. If you stop into the restaurant, let them know that you know me? I don’t know that it will help, but maybe they’ll give you like a free dessert or something.” He offered.

Priam just smiled at him. "You aren't. And, you didn't. Say something awkward, I mean. You don't give yourself enough credit. I don't talk about him." It was brief, because he figured Yu would understand even if he didn't say much about it. "I haven't said anything about that to Sterling, either. One of my 'bad memories I'm trying to replace' sort of things. But, slow steps. And I feel better today than I have in a long time, honestly. My chest feels lighter. So this is one more happy memory kicking out one of those bad ones. And the next meal we have together will be another one, and planning for Christmas will be another one, and before we know it I won't have anything but happy memories."

Another smile, still earnest; he wasn't wearing it for show or social obligation. "And hopefully you'll be in the same boat."

Yu glanced down at his half-empty cup of coffee and then back to Priam, raising it to the air.
“To… outweighing the bad, and the jagged.” He offered, lifting the cup in a toast before pulling it back to swig deeply.

“And um, good, yet enormous dogs and adorable, shabby feet cats. But, seriously, I’m glad you feel better. It um, that’s a task all it’s own sometimes.” He laughed despite the gravity of the words.

The toast seemed to excite the dogs, Penny who sniffed at Yu's feet and wagged, and Odie who was nearly tangled and ready to pull on Priam to go smell the trashcan a few yards away.

"It is, isn't it? But I'm feeling very fortunate right now. It's a good toast. I'll have to make the same when I get something to drink!"

He was smiling still but Odie enthusiastically gave him a little tug and Penny seemed encouraged to follow.

"--Ah, I think their patience for my social life is running thin. I'll talk to you soon, Yu. I hope you have a good day and that your shift goes well!"

“Hope so too.” He nodded.
“Have a good rest of your walk! And um…it was good running into you, I hope it’s a good evening.” He offered.

He was tired, yes, but maybe today was a little more than just how much work he could get done before he got to go home.
