The didn't keep a pet? Rajani looked at the boy a bit oddly then. However, her mouth opened soon after as her jaw dropped. That pile on the floor was his bed? As in, where he slept? Her grey eyes blinked several times before she seemingly picked her jaw up off the floor. "I'm sorry.. did you just say that you sleep on that pile of rags?" She pointed toward the back with her still free hand. Did the boy not realize that while she may camp out in the jungle very often she still had a better sleeping space than he did?

Then he asked what sort of creature she had. "A Janarim. My dad got him for me as protection." And Tor certainly had the attitude to back up his growl. "He likes to think he's the only beastie in my life." She spoke affectionately of her familiar.

The brows lowered, furrowed, creasing lines in the middle. He wasn't quite sure how this was a sticking point. "...Yes? I'll admit it's not pretty, but it's about as comfortable as the one my teacher uses. It's warm here, I don't need to share, and I don't ache when I wake up, so it does what it's supposed to." Apparently this wasn't the norm here. Having not been along on housecalls as yet, there wasn't much basis for comparison in Jauhar. Aire was beginning to think his teacher was a bit more eccentric than the neighbors had said.

"From the way you speak, he sounds nice. My siblings and I took care of a bird back in Belrea, nothing that size." At this point, shifting the topic looked to be wise. Intuition told the boy that there was a tension in the air, different than with her brother. And while it didn't seem likely, Aire might have offended her. Are sleeping spots taboo to show people here? Or is it just opposite genders? I should find a way to hide it, I suppose.

Her lips pressed into a thin line at that. She wasn't so sure she liked the idea of the boy sleeping on a pile of rags. Especially in a back room with a bunch of dangerous stuff. Then it dawned on her that this boy, apart from helping her hide, meant nothing to her in the larger scope of things. Rajani then had to mentally take a few steps back. "Mm. Sorry, I shouldn't judge."

As the conversation was carefully steered toward pets and the like she nodded her head a bit. "Tor has his moments. I would happily trade him for my brother Aysun's Janarim, though. Maw is far more gorgeous." The shifter gave a nod of her head, the curls bouncing slightly. "Birds do have some very pretty coloring. Did you use the feathers for anything?" She knew more than a few people that would put feathers in their hair and most of them used the feathers from their own familiars. She had no such feathered friend. Of course Aysun did but she didn't think he would want her to pluck any from his kinfa. "I have to admit I can barely keep Tor and Ethra well cared for. I don't think I could handle another beast."

Judge? So it was a cultural thing after all. I'll have to conceal it from here out. Odd that the old man didn't say anything, but I can't imagine him much caring about it. Must ask about that later. The thin line of her mouth relaxed, widened into lips, and the boy in question relaxed a little more himself. Pleasant as she was, they were still fresh acquaintances. He was still out of his social depth and knew it. "It's alright. You've had an exciting day.

Never had a Janarim, so I couldn't say to which looks better. Besides, sounds like Tor keeps you from being lonely. Along with this Ethra you've just mentioned. Assuming they don't get on as well as they might, though, from context." Unfortunately, though he could talk someone's ear off about unique chemical chains and reactions in the process of a refinement process, small talk drew on a far more limited reserve of speech. Aire was still learning of most beasts, apart from those involved in most urban engineering projects. The bird, at least... "We weren't quite sure what he was. Looked a bit raptorish, but he only bit us a few times. Was healthy enough that most of his feathers stayed put, and we didn't chance plucking any. Wish I'd brought one of the few fallen along, actually; they were banded in sky blue."

Exciting was not a word she'd have used to describe her day. Exhausting, definitely. Taxing, even. Not exciting. But she didn't say that. Instead she nodded her head.

"Oh.. Ethra pushes Tor's buttons a bit. Hitches a ride even when Tor is grumpy. Being that Ethra is a Maglardilla and skitters all over it probably makes Tor uncomfortable too." Rajani paused as she spoke of her familiars. It struck her that Aire wouldn't know what a Maglardilla was. So she leaned to the side and set her hammer on the floor next to her foot so that it leaned against her leg then stood back up so she could use both hands. Bringing them up she moved them apart a good bit, one hand on either side of her just past her waist. "Ethra is about this big. He's got a tail that goes farther and ends with a stinger. Maglardilla look like giant bugs." That was about the best way to describe it.

Her expression blanked as he described the bird of his. She didn't know much about the beasts in the world unless she'd come face to face with them, or her brother had one in his growing hoard. Rajani shook her head slightly. "Can't think of one.. but the sky blue feathers sound pretty." She pointed at his braid. "They'd look really nice in your hair."

The bent-nosed 'prentice nodded as he listened, a curious and attentive audience. Hands had secured pen and parchment once more, and begun scritching notes in his own tight script. He knew what a janarim was, having seen a few back home, and more here. Maglardilla, however, was a wholly unfamiliar word, and he was ever eager to learn. "Wait, so they just look like, or they are insects? You folks keep insects as pets here? Would've thought a janarim would've eaten Ethra by now if it's consistently annoying the bigger creature.

...That was a bit insensitive; I apologize." While Aire didn't know much about nature, he was learning how better to survive it. That did not, however, mean that he was comfortable inferring the death of someone's pet to another. Also, he'd already offended(?) this lady once, and had no wish to test her patience on that point. "I know they were pretty when my sister wore them in hers. Haven't put anything into mine, as it kind of murders combs sometimes. Wouldn't want it getting lost."

She paused for a second to consider what he said. Ethra didn't just look like an insect. He was one. "Alright, you got me there. He is a giant bug." Rajani chuckled some. "To be fair though, I didn't exactly buy Ethra. He kinda just... showed up one day and never left." Her shoulders lifted up a bit to say she didn't mind. The shifter wasn't like some girls who didn't like bugs and dirt. Being that she lived in the jungle, almost quite literally some days, she had gotten used to a lot of things.

Aire saying that he was surprised Tor hadn't eaten Ethra, then apologizing for it, brought about an even wider smile. "No no, its fine. You're right. And not totally wrong. Tor tried to eat him once. It didn't end so well." Rajani hadn't needed to step in either. It had ended with her big grumpy Janarim having a sore snout for a day or so. Thinking about it made her laugh just a little bit.

With the topic going to his hair and the fact that it killed combs she looked at his braid. Her grey eyes took in the wild nature of it before she moved a step closer and reached out with one hand to grab hold of the end, to feel it's texture. "There are ways to keep the feathers from getting tangled in or from dropping out. I've seen a few girls attach them to clips or bands and then put those in their hair. You could try that instead." Her own hair was kept in a pin-up style. One of the remaining things from her time in Oba. The other was the shell necklace she always wore.

New and odd. He'd never thought of insects as viable pets before. Arthropods, perhaps, but never insects... Better, that it had simply chosen a symbiotic partner in a mammal and not been eaten by the existing janarim made for interesting listening. "That's not common, is it? They just decide to be your friend out of the blue?" He wasn't particularly squeamish himself, at least with different animals. Aire was, however, cautious about those he'd never seen. Now that they had a real possibility of becoming a regular part of his life on a new continent, learning about them was the course of prudence.

The skinny 'prentice kept politely still when she reached out to snag his braid. 'Braid' may have been a bit generous, though it had clearly been intentionally woven at some point. It was more akin to a wrist-thick tangle at this point, and hung down to his waist, tied off with a leather thong. It was, at least, clean, and fluffy in her hand, as hair of his curls should generally be. "Haven't tried either as yet. Probably do bands, if I get the chance. Less likely to break, more like to get 'em back when I'm done."

She shook her head slightly. "No, not usually. Ethra is a bit on the weird side." Rajani gave a small cringe as she mentioned her familiar was weird. Even for a bug he was strange. "He acts more like a Radaku than a Maglardilla." Essentially, he seemed to think he was a dog instead of an insect.

The shifter let go of the braid and pulled her hand away, now conscious of the fact that she'd invaded his space without asking. Something she hardly ever did and never with someone she didn't really know. "I'm sorry, that was rude of me. I should have asked before I simply touched your hair." Her head nodded forward a little as she gave him a shallow bow. "You're right though. The bands may be better for your hair." Her grey eyes took in the thick braid of the boy before she nodded her head again, this time in agreement. "If you don't mind my asking, why keep it so long if it's that much trouble to keep tamed?" Why didn't he just cut his hair short? Rajani had seen more than a few people with hair shorter than her pinkie finger.

Once Rajani stepped back, the mild tension uncoiled from him, and the smile came easier. "If there's a next time, then yes, please." Having not kept up his note-taking while she was within arm's reach, Aire hastened to scribble down what information he'd missed. Thankfully not much. Behavioral patterns of the local flora were themselves valuable, even as outliers in data. It proved new things possible, suggested alternate routes to dealing with them. The tip of the reed tapped at his chin as the question was mulled. "Haven't thought of it. Could, I suppose. I'm used to it by now, and it would feel strange not to rebraid it every week or so. And if I managed to hack it off now, I'd need to worry about its' keeping out of my eyes. ...Less work overall, I think." Most of this last was just musing aloud, not intended as answer directly. Perhaps he didn't realize that he spoke.

The whole thing shook from the neck down with his head, more a tail than a hairdo. "I'm sorry, I get side-tracked easily. I've got to get back to work on the dyes before my teacher returns, or I'll have an earful to go with lunch. Your brother should be far enough gone by now that he won't spot you immediately. If you wanna pop back by another time, feel free! I'll try to keep a pot of tea going, just in case."

His explanation of why he kept his hair as long as he did made sense, she supposed. In truth Rajani kept her own hair in a braid because it was easier to manage that way. Though she did take some time to style her bangs into the curls she sported.

As he farther stated that he needed to get back to his work she nodded. If it weren't for her popping in and causing a scene of sorts then he'd likely have been done by now. Maybe? She wasn't sure since she knew nothing of what he did. A smile was given to the boy then as she collected her antitoxin and put it in her bag. "I'm usually not this far south, but if I am again then I'll stop by. Hopefully without the dramatics." The shifter moved so that she could pick up her hammer then gave the strange boy a last look. "If you ever need a guide through the jungle then send for me. I live in Sol."
