The Toco Toucan eggshell continued to sag until gravity had had its way with it, leaving behind a sorry sight indeed. What had once been oblong in shape was now flattened and shapeless. The hole at the bottom was no longer apparent, but there was something peculiar about the sand around it. Quietly, subtly, the sand began to shift. First bulging, then sagging (in a similar manner to the shell), a definite tunnel began to emerge from directly beneath the egg.
The difference of several millimeters was all it took to keep the sand covering the little body within. But the hatchling quickly tired and peeped in alarm. Was it stuck? A tiny egg tooth poked around at the tight space around it. Flattened as if by the weight of the sand, the hatchling craned their neck and lo, fresh air met tiny dragon nostrils. A deep exhalation sent sand spraying upward. With a sudden heave, the hatch jumped up with a shower of sand.
The little Green shook sand free of her body then she sat beside her collapsed tunnel, very proud of her accomplishment. In truth, the tunnel only reached out about a hatchling's length, but who was going to tell her how short it was? For her size and age, she was a super dragon! She honked confidently and looked around her, her distinctly blackened ribcage heaving just a little.

Ryala Oh, hello Gwyn, it is so nice to see you. How are you today? Me, I am doing quite well. I feel so free out of the shell. Did you know--- Scarlet Macaw began to move again, the egg nodding and chattering like a brilliant head, and giving little peeps at the struggling life inside. Then suddenly the very narrowest part of the egg broke free, followed immediately by two little blue feet. A growl welled up from the egg and furious scratching could be heard by some of the closer candidates and his mother. The clawed feet scrabbled at the sand as no doubt the little hands were doing the same. Finally with a squeaky roar, the little blue heaved the upper half of the shell upward, his wings flared out. Just as quickly the shell fell back down again, bumping him on the head and rolling over onto the sand. Grumbling, the little blue looked around him, tail lashing as his frustration melted away and the angry colors swirling in his eyes eventually slowed into a murky blue-green.
He was goopy and did not care. He would not care until it began to dry, pulling at his hide, but until then, it went largely unnoticed. He now was on a mission. His goal should not be surprising; he was looking for his bond. And the sooner the better! He started with the Candidates closest to him, and he sniffed at each one rather curiously. Everybody was so different! How would he know them when they met? Best not to dwell on it, he supposed.
He found himself face to face with Gwyn. Oh, hello! You seem like a nice person. A pleasure to meet you! Or have we met before? Do you know just how much a hatchling learns while in the shell? And I want to learn more! So much more.

(Will reply with serfie later but Helane made me post)
Helane watched, beside herself with glee as dragons hatched and wandered the sands, ah but that green couldn't see where she was going.... luckily the baby blundered towards her and all Helane could see was candidates moving out of her way... pfft. She stood firm, as if aboard a rocking boat, to keep her balance as the blindfolded (basically) baby bumped her, she grabbed the bit of shell and gently pulled upwards, being careful in case the eggshell was really stuck to the baby Dragon "allie-oops" sge said, "betcha could see better without this in your way" ... then she realised... she had gone against the rule of not interfering with the babies before they Impressed... well unless they asked, but the green hadnt. Helane stepped back, shell in her hands as she felt super guilty at touching someone else's Dragon possibly. Oops....

Zamistia noticed a green in the back was looked upset, but she didn't know what about. She looked in the direction the dragon was paying attention to and winced seeing someone eating on the edge of the sands. She may be pretty new around here, but it didn't seem like a very good thing to do. And come to think of it, she didn't recognize this person either, she wasn't a candidate..right? No, considering she didn't appear to be in the robes, it didn't look like it at all.
However, her attention was brought back to the eggs, as one of the other candidates went to help the poor egg that had fallen. Then she saw sun parakeet starting to move, before it bumped into one of the other eggs. As the second egg fell, she worried as it didn't seem to move after that, and looked empty from where it was. Oh, she hoped it hadn't been a dud..maybe the baby was elsewhere? She certainly was trying to remain positive that is what had happened. The mother didn't seem worried, so maybe the egg was alright, she reasoned. Then she noticed scarlet macaw beginning to move, the top coming up briefly enough to catch a blue color, before coming back down.
Before she could worry on if the one blue would manage to get out, angelfish seemed to begin the hatching process. Unfortunately, when a piece fell off, a flash of orange was seen. Zamistia went through her head, trying to remember what orange meant..irritation..crap! And it wasn't long before the egg burst open, revealing a handsome blue with still orange eyes. From the look of the dragon as it took each of them in, it wasn't very happy about something. As the little dragon raced around, it seemed to be calming a little, she though anyway. However, the demand to entertain him, made her wonder what they could possibly do.
I wish I knew how to help, little one. And you really should ask more politely. Get more attention that way,Zamistia explained to the blue gently. She caught the one egg she worried was empty flatten and that worry seemed to intensify. Until she happened to see the movement of the sands, right before a green was revealed. She released the breath she had been holding, the egg had been full of life after all. Oh good, she was happy the little green had been able to get out. She also noticed scarlet macaw moving again, this time fully revealing the blue within. He seemed upset at first, but eventually calmed down to begin looking at the candidates. Good, he looked like he was friendly enough now and she hoped he and his siblings would find their riders.
She then saw clownfish beginning to move, revealing a little green from within. Unfortunately, the top of the shell had come down to cover the little one's eyes. She tried to avoid the blinded green, but soon found herself being bumped into. The red head lost her balance and landed on her behind in the sand.
Are you okay, little one?she thought in the direction of the green. She may be the one in the sand, but she was more worried about the hatchling.

Focusing all of her attention now on the Angelfish egg, Cyrilla watched as first a shard fell to the sands revealing the glowing eye within, then the whole thing burst apart as the blue made his escape. Now here was a dragon who seemed strong and intelligent! Watching as he first turned away from one lad, then the girl who had helped the one egg, she raised her chin. Of course, he would only want the best!
A moment later, he'd paced up to her. Yes! This one was hers! She was about to throw a triumphant look towards her sister when the light blue's eyes changed to an angry red and he sniffed in a way that she knew all too well. So, what, this blue that had absolutely no life experience thought he was better than her? *Well, excuse me!* she thought, as he wandered elsewhere. *Seems he's not so intelligent after all, or he would have been able to recognize greatness! Bah, who needs him, anyways?*
With a huff of her own, she brushed a lock of blonde hair from her eyes and turned back to the rest of the hatching.
The green that popped out of the sand near the "dead" egg was a surprise. Cy almost turned away disgustedly , unimpressed, until she realized that a dragon that was that good at hiding would be perfect for spying on or scaring people. So, maybe she had potential! The blue that had finally emerged from the Macaw egg certainly didn't, as seemed just a little too excited about absolutely nothing. Not did the green who knocked into her with a piece of egg on its head that it didn't even try to remove from itself.
