Role Played Response: Ghost was ecstatic to realize she had been right, the scent she had picked up on was definitely the red-tailed hare, and she was determined to follow it. Soon enough, though, she came upon a split — was three different paths called a split? — in the road. To the left there was foliage and large trees, an ideal place for a hare to camp out. To the right came a brief rustling — could that be the hare? — but Ghost had picked up a scent that continued on down a path straight ahead. Devoted to her initial instincts, she pressed her nose to the ground once more and pawed down the middle path at a brisk trot.

Round 2 Response
Wolf Name: Red Oak Choice: B
Role Played Response: Indecision played with Red between the west and the north, and it took him longer than normal to decide which path he would take. At the last, he chose instinct which sent him off in the hopes of picking up the scent to the North. With speed, he kept his nose low to the ground and eyes peeled.

Round 2 is now closed! Below are the consequences of each choice.
A. Good job, you're heading in the right direction! You pick up a trail and soon enough you're following it through the brush, keeping your eyes peeled for a flash of red. 3 points.
B. You heard north but soon lose the trail all together. You loop back around and decide to head towards the thicker forest, but you've fallen behind the rest of the competition. 1 point.
C. The rustle turned out to be the wind billowing through the forest. You've completely gone off the correct trail and it takes you sometime to start heading in the right direction. 0 points.
Now in the thick of the forest, you've finally caught what you think is the hare's trail! Nose to the ground, you follow it under fallen trees and through the bramble. You can then hear some of your pack mates in the distance and you know you're not the only one closing in on the prey. How do you react?
A. You speed up your pace in order to take the lead in the hunt. If you can reach it first, you have the best shot at claiming victory!
B. You decide to loop around the trail and let your pack mates herd your prey to you while you lay in wait.
C. Stealth is key. You continue to follow the trail you've found, moving as silently as possible in the thick brush.

Round 3 Response
Wolf Name: Forest Shadow Choice: C
Role Played Response: Forest Shadow was having no luck with this hare hunt which wasn't surprising since she was new to this and new to this territory. She had hunted in the forest before, but she preferred a slower pace than this rush of the hare hunt. She would be lucky if she found the hare, she was willing to think that one of the stronger hunters would be the winner. Then she would go back to collecting herbs before winter. She decided this time she would try for a slower stealthy approach.

Round 3 Response
Wolf Name: Maple Choice: C
Role Played Response: She had a few options, and good ones. She could speed up, but she risked tripping over something. She also risked being in a group already frightening the hare -- that many wolves would only spur the hare on, and they were fast.
Looping around the trail and waiting for them to bring her the hare sounded doable, but two things soured her; riding off someone else's work and the fact a hare could easily jump aside, run through her legs, or turn around. They were small, and chasing them rarely led to a win.
Stealth. It'd be easier to grab the hare if it didn't see her or perceive her as a threat. Instead of hoping it didn't jump around and away, she could slink up and snatch them. Stealth wasn't like her, by far, but Maple liked to pay attention when hunting with veterans. Sometimes, stealth was the answer.
She hoped it was this time.

Round 3 Response
Wolf Name: Mourning Dove Choice: A
Role Played Response: Once Dove had picked up the strong scent of the hare, she charged on. She was sure to be the one to catch it. Now was the time she was going to put the swift in Swiftfell! She'd be the first one to snatch up that hare and show everyone what she was made of!
Role Played Response: Hawkflight kept moving forward towards the scent, her red eyes darted round in search of the cottontail. Her ears twitched around trying to zero in on the hare and not one of the other packmates. Sneakily she crept. One paw down testing the ground, two...

Round 3 Response
Wolf Name: Red Oak Choice: A
Role Played Response:
Red could feel the forest alive with movement and it made him anxious. Tensing, he unconsciously began to move faster through the thick forest. He was sure that he could get to the hare first if he just could get ahead of the rest of the pack... in doing so, however, he stumbled a long the way; much more than he would have if he'd taken his time. Despite that he knew the forest like the back of his paw, the hunt made him feel as if he was somewhere different, somewhere unfamiliar. It made him sloppy and uncoordinated though he hadn't taken much notice. All he could think of was the hare.
Role Played Response: Unfortunately, it didn't appear Maggie's efforts were going to fruit much at all. What she thought had been the hare had simply been the wind blowing through the leaves — a major disappointment. Then then, her nose lifted to the air, she caught something. It smelled just like the hare for which she was trying. Her ears flicked, taking in the sound of nearby packmates. Stealth, she decided, would be her friend. She kept her body low and trotted through the forest, eager to finally (seemingly, at least) be following the right path.
Role Played Response: Ghost Whisper let out a frustrated snort, realizing she had just lost the trail and thus, valuable time. Looping back around, she soon came upon the rest of her packmates who were competing in the hunt. She furrowed her brow, trying to decide what to do next. Fighting her instinct to charge ahead and prioritize speed, she slowed her pace and continued on, lagging behind most of her packmates but with a vantage point that would allow her to speed in and snatch up the hare when they came upon it.
Okay, okay. Hazel sniffed out the trail and tried to make herself quiet. She had fallen behind, but it was always good to practice her stealthing skills. Maybe the ones ahead would miss something she could pick up...
She was very sad to note, however, that nobody was bantering. Hello, did no one think of giving her material? :C

Round 3 is now closed! Below are the consequences of each action.
A. Swiftfell wolves are known for their speed... but also need stealth. By moving quickly, you create a substantial amount of noise, especially because the dead leaves which litter the forest floor are dry from many days without rain. The hare easily hears you coming and is able to flee the immediate area. 1 point.
B. This would have been a good tactic if you were hunting together with the pack. In fact, this is a frequent hunting method used in packs, including Swiftfell. Because there are multiple tracks laid by the hare, however, it is impossible to know which direction the hare is heading simply by its scent. You are unable to execute your plan and, instead, wind up confused and wandering further from the hare. Because you would have to be near enough to the hare to realize others were giving chase (see choice C., below), this choice ends in elimination.
C. Despite errors made by your pack mates, you are able to lay low and continue along the path with little error. As you continue on your way, you hear a lot of racket... as if someone was blundering through the woods. Then all of a sudden you see--actually see--the red tailed hare! It was a blur but the tail was distinct. With the prey in sight, the chase is on. Your muscles tense, pupils dilate... then, like a trigger, you're off. 3 points.
The hare has been spotted! Clearly, you aren't the only one to have noticed, either. You can see and hear the chase give way, as pack mates begin to abandon their stalking in favor of a good, old-fashioned chase. Your body acts with little conscious effort and you are flying through the trees, joining the pack in the sprint to the finish.
Now this is where speed does come into play. While a hare's maximum speed is greater than that of a wolf's, the hare's stamina is lower. The hare will top speeds at 50 MPH but can only carry itself for 20 meters or so (~65 feet). More realistically, it averages 35 MPH in short distances (90 meters/300 ft. or less). [see here.] Whereas, "[t]he wolf has a running gait of [34–43 mph], can leap 5 m (16 ft) horizontally in a single bound, and can maintain rapid pursuit for at least 20 minutes." [see here.]
And so... This round is going to be different, in that it is conducted by RNG.
I have generated a number between 35-50 which represents the speed of the hare. That number is 48. You are now to generate a number between 34 and 43.Your current points listed on the score sheet will then be added to your wolf's speed. If your speed is the same or greater than the hare's, congratulations! You have successfully captured the hare! If no one is able to reach the hare, then the hunt continues in Round 5. (In the event of a tie, the wolves who reach the hare at the same time will move on to Round 5 for a tie breaker.) Good luck!

Round 4 Response
Wolf Name: Forest Shadow Rolled Speed: 43 + 4
Role Played Response:
Forest Shadow put on a burst of speed as soon as she saw the hare and she got so close she could smell the hare and the dye on it's tail, but she could feel she wouldn't be able to keep up the speed and the hare would get away from her. She was thrilled though she had made a good choice and she felt like a part of the swiftfell pack. The thrill of the chase made her heart pound. She might not be a hunter but she was a dire wolf and that made her a part of something bigger which she loved.
