Nix leaned against the thing. It shifted ever so slightly, but mostly didn't budge.

"I think the lack of anything but plants is a magic thing," he said. "I really should go ask somebody who knows more about this stuff how it all works...and how there could possibly be trees with nothing else." He rubbed his cheek.

"I feel like they taught us some time that without animals, the plants would die, and vice-versa..." He frowned, trying to remember the science lessons. "Balance of Oxygen and carbon dioxide, I think?" He shrugged. "Anyway, that makes me think that everything just stopped for how ever long it's been since someone was here...but I don't know."

"That does seem like a question that needs to be answered, because scientifically it definitely makes negative sense." Michelle let out a sigh, brushing her hands together before brushing them over her shorts.

"Yep, that's what they taught us in school, too. Animals help by producing carbon dioxide and by moving seeds around for the plants, while plants provide the oxygen we need to breathe. I'm sure there's other things in there, but that's the basic idea of it," she offered, going from what she remembered from being a kid and all through college. "I don't see how things could just stop, though? Magic is magic but...does magic control time or something? And even if that's the case, then why aren't there animals here now?"

Nix shrugged at that. "I feel like digging too deeply into all of this is, maybe, just a good way to get confused and frustration." He laughed. "Honestly, that's why I never really came here much before. But I'd been visiting the moon, and got to thinking about what might be here."

He looked around then. "And, what I'm seeing is something that'll take a long time to sort out.." He sat down on a chunk of material. It was cool to the touch. "Which is kinda sucky, but nothing worth doing's ever easy and all that, right?"

"I mean, I'd get confused just because I don't...really know these things. And I'd get frustrated about it, for sure, 'cause you'd think I'd be old enough to understand these things but." Michelle gave a shrug.

"It does look like something that would take time to sort out, but you're young, you've got a lot of time ahead of you. I have a good bit of time ahead of me, too, but I don't know that you'd want to drag me along repeatedly just to see what's going on here." She gave a small, subdued smile to Nix, standing and moving away from the contraption.

"But I'm sure in the end, once you know what it was, what it did, it'll be really rewarding and you'll feel really great about it."

"It's true," Nix replied, nodding. "Will be really cool to figure out." He looked around again. "Though, I feel like I should try to, you know map out the area more. Now I know there's something other than trees here, I've got a good starting point for a map..."

He reached to the side and pulled out a little notebook, then a pencil, and placed the notebook on the metallic thing, and carefully drew a shape that vaguely resembled it, and the pond nearby right in the center of the page.

He shifted the notebook a bit so it didn't fall down, and then pulled out a compass from the air. He frowned at it, shook it, held it out again. "Shoot. That'll make mapping a bit harder..."

How much detail would you like to go in all this? Or, rather, how long should we leave poor Michelle following around a boy in space spandex in an alien forest? razz

"Can't go wrong with having a map," Michelle agreed, watching as he drew a map -- or the beginnings of one -- of the area. Kid had more talent than she did, that was for certain.

And then there was a compass and okay, everything had come out of the pocket, the place the food and drinks were, but something about the compass had her laughing softly to herself, seeing how serious Nix looked.

Only once the laughter was done did she take a breath and calm her facial features. "Okay, so why won't it work? Did magic break the compass, or are the magnetic poles just that different here?" She could only guess, but she thought she remembered something about that being a thing.

Look, Michelle would keep following spandex froggy boy for however long he wanted to stay because she's the one who piggybacked, she doesn't want to limit his time more than necessary lol. But most of it could probably be handwaved or if Nix wants to leave, she won't say no.

Nix gave her a bemused smirk when she laughed, but kept at what he was doing. He shook the compass again. "Uhm...you know, I don't think there's magnetic poles here at all." He frowned slightly, looking up in the air. "Isn't that bad?" He said softly, then shook his head. "Magic is weird," he concluded.

"Let's see here, uh..." He considered. "I didn't think to bring any rope or string, so I guess we can just eyeball it. Shouldn't be too bad, right?"

meynara
lol, I see. Well, can keep going with a bit, then background some basic mapping, I suppose?
