Kyl
Kyl smiled as the creature before him did after he copied the noise. He didn't quite know what the significance of the sound was but he was glad to see the creature smile and was eager to hear more. Excitement coursed through him as the creature seemed to read his mind and give him more sounds. Kyl watched carefully tilting his head in intrigue when the creature point to itself with the sounds. Was it naming itself Kyl wondered as he worked through the sounds the creature gave him. "Ha-wk, hawk-eye, Hawkeye. Hawkeye?" he questioned placing a hand to the creature's chest as if confirming that the creature was named Hawkeye. It was a strange name to Kyl but he smiled none the less. When the creature made another sound and pointed at him Kyl could only guess that it wanted his name. He didn't see the point in not giving it. Kyl, Ki-l, Kyl." Kyl explained pointing to himself in the same way the creature had while also slowing down the pronunciation of his name so the creature could understand. The mermaids smile was estatic when the creature got his name right and his flippers breached the water in his excitement before slapping down with a splash that didn't both Kyl one bit.

Hawkeye Shiki
Hawkeye felt the massive splash hit him and he laughed. He had mastered the mermaids name after a few attempts, "Kyel, Kiel, Kil, Kyl." The elation that spread across his face.
Hawkeye paused. He was hungry. He had spent the night making sure that Kyl was okay till he passed out on the cool floor next to the tank. He hadn't eaten since the last meal of yesterday before hightailing back home. Grabbing the medical supplies and took off down the stairs. "I'll be back." He smiled and disappeared around a corner after putting the supplies away.
He returned ten minutes later with an armload full of food, not sure what the mermaid would eat and wasn't sure if could human food other than the diet of the marine life he preferred. However he really could not allow him to eat the specimens he was observing. They were apart of the inventory at the agency.
He returned to hit spot on the ledge in the tank, a short rimmed bucket filled with food. "Food? Hungry?"

Kyl
Kyl smiled as Hawkeye laughed when the water splashed them both. The smile spread even wider when the man got his name right. Looking to Hawkeye and looking for more sounds or what Kyl now knew as words. The smile faded from his face when Hawkeye suddenly moved and went back down the outside of the tank. He didn't know why the man was suddenly leaving him with more words he didn't understand. Kyl sunk himself back into the deeper water to let it flow over his gills and breath more air than he could get through breathing with his lungs. He didn't know if he should stay near the surface of the water and see if Hawkeye returned. He couldn't see the man beyond the tank, he had seemingly disappeared. He waited for minutes to see is Hawkeye would return and had almost given up when the man returned holding a bunch of things. Kyl was quick to pull himself back up onto the ledge and move to see what the man had brought back. More words that he didn't understand but tried them out. "Food.... hungry..." he spoke testing the words on his tongue. He didn't know what they meant but he assumed they had something to do with the thing in the bucket. He reached out a hand touching one of the things at the top of the bucket before looking up curiously to Hawkeye.

Hawkeye contemplated what to do next, all living things needed to eat and they had a mouth. It was best to give a demonstration first. His fingers plucked a strawberry from the pile and raised it to his lips, taking a bite, he chewed and swallowed. Then finished eating it.
"Food." He indicated to the bucket of fruit and vegetables. "Hungry." Then to his stomach. He handed one strawberry to Kyl. "Try."
Again, he did not know if it would cause an issue with Kyl's daily diet but seeing as he has human characteristics, maybe genetic data passed down through generations were still present.

Kyl watched as Hawkeye grabbed a small red thing from the bucket. To Kyl it looked like some of the things that grew among seaweed that some of his kind liked to eat. He wasn't fond of them because they always tasted bitter, he wondered if it was the same for the red thing Hawkeye took a bite from. He watched understanding now what food meant as Hawkeye made more motions and repeated the words. He figured out that hungry was when ones stomach felt empty. The next word was new to him but with Hawkeye handing him a similar red thing he assumed the man wanted him to eat it. Taking it he looked over the thing, it was a bit different looking than the things that grew within the seaweed. He was a bit hesitant to eat it considering that he didn't like the water version but he didn't want to be rude. So he tossed the whole thing into his mouth and chewed quickly at first to break it down and swallow it. However when the first taste of the juice of the thing errupted across his tongue he stopped. His tongue flicking across the slightly chewed pieces of the fruit in his mouth to experience the taste again. It was sweet, surprisingly so, not bitter at all like he had expected. He finished the strawberry slowly and sat there for a moment contemplating what he had just tasted before he was suddenly diving into the bucket with his hands looking for new strange other things. Finding one that seemed interesting to him and slightly familiar he held it up to Hawkeye with a questioning look. "Food?" he asked holding up the apple.

Hawkeye nodded his head at the question. "Yes." Then picked up a green apple that matched the one Kyl had in his hand. "Apple." And held up the little red fruit. "Strawberry."
He put the strawberry back down and then picked up a pairing knife and began to peel the apple. Stopping half way, he then sliced it and deftly using the knifes tip to remove the hard core from each slice and then made two incisions on the green skin and then made two ears. It was an Apple Rabbit. He gave the slice to Kyl and ate one himself.
Now what else could he make?

Kyl looked on listening intently as Hawkeye picked up a piece of fruit the same kind as the one in his hand naming it Kyl assumed. Then he showed him the fruit he had eaten before naming that as well. "Ap-ple.... straw-berry..." Kyl repeated holding up and pointing to the fruits in turn. He then watched as Hawkeye picked up something and cut the apple into things. Taking the thing that Hawkeye made fore him he smiled admiring it before eating it with a happy little noise. After eating the apple he looked through the bucket before holding up another thing of produce with a questioning look.

Hawkeye named each fruit and what ones he could make into cute animals, they ate between them. Some sour, some sweet, a few were bitter.
He moved onto the next two things that are technically fruit but classified as vegetables. "Cucumber." He gave a couple slices to Kyl before eating them himself. They were cool and crisp, refreshing. He liked cucumbers and would add a few slices to his water.
"Tomato." He gave wedge slices. Hawkeye did not like eating ketchup, he can eat tomatoes, but he drew the line at ketchup, it was full of sugar or fructose syrup of which was bad for someone's diet in large dose's. It was one of a few condiments he did not keep in his cabinet or fridge or even dared to allow to cross his threshold.

Kyl
Kyl was having a great time watching Hawkeye turn the different food items into different animals. The bitter ones Kyl was not very fond of, the sour ones were something new to him entirely and he wasn't quite sure if he liked them. But the sweet ones Kyl was more than happy to eat. The cucumber was something entirely different to the mermaid but he loved the crisp crunch to the thing and ate all that he could get and was eager for more. The tomato was interesting and he wasn't sure what to make of it exactly but he didn't dislike it. After awhile of trying different things Kyl found himself full enough that he didn't want to eat more.

Hawkeye felt like he had gotten his daily intake in and when Kyl himself was full. He took the bucket back to the kitchen and disposed of the waste. Now what could he do to help enrich Kyl?
He had compared Kyl to a child learning for the first time. As humans we often associate by objects first and letters and the words circling us daily. Spelling came after.
He went into a wall closet and pulled out a few things that he used to keep his team sharp minded whenever through out the year. Returning to the platform at the tank.
They were diving toys. From sticks to rings to letters to animals and food. There were also a couple of balls.

Kyl didn't feel so dejected when Hawkeye left this time instead seeming to know that he would be back. Still the mermaid slipped into the water allowing himself to breath from his gills again. He saw in circles as he waited for Hawkeye to return. When the man finally did he popped his head above the water looking curiously at what the man held now. The things he had were colorful and came in different shapes. Swimming up to the ledge he didn't quite pull himself up onto it. Just his upper body for the moment. "Hawkeye?" he questioned.

Hawkeye smiled when Kyl said his name. "Kyl. Toy. Toys'." He opened up the bin and held one up to indicate singularity and several in the other to indicate plural. He let Kyl examine one before tossing the whole bucket in. Many sank and a few float. It was up to see what Kyle can do with them.

Kyl tilted his head in confusion as the man before him said a new word. "Toys..." he repeated with a hum. It was a simple word but still strange to the mermaid. It became stranger when Hawkeye dumped whatever he had that was described by the new word into the water. Kyl watched as many of the things sunk into the water and some floated. He looked to Hawkeye a bit more confused but getting nothing from the man he went to look at the things in the water. He was a bit surprised to recognize some of the things as letters or at least something that looked similar to the letters he had learned to use in his own language. He went diving for more that he could use as his own name. When he had found the letter that were closest to what he was used to he swam back to the ledge and placed them in order for how his name was spelled. "Kyl." he chirped smiling up to Hawkeye.

"Yes." Nodding when Kyl spelled his name. So the mermaid is aware of written language? Do they have text's below the surface where they live? All intriguing. For later then. It would better when he had a deeper grasp of spoken words that was above surface.
He thought he'd give it a try and see if Kyl could locate the letters to certain words and spell them. "'T-O, G-E-T, E-A-T.'" He sounded each letter out, then indicated a particular food toy. "Strawberry."

Kyl grinned broadly glad that he had seemed to get something right. Yes was a word he recognized from his own people. Maybe their languages weren't so different and that only certain things were, Kyl mused. Soon Hawkeye was giving him letters to words. Looking to the letters before him he nodded and dove through the water once more. Only a few letters seemed stranger than those he was used to. So he dragged up two that could be to him what was used to spell the words. Soon he was spelling the words out as indicated only really getting the A wrong once, because it looked strange to him. But he had dragged up multiple letters to try and spell with. When he had seemingly gotten the words right by Hawkeye's indication he gave a little chirrup of a noise pleased and waited for more. The strawberry word was one he knew he liked and the gesture to the floating toy in the water had Kyl racing after it, not that it was hard to retrieve of course. He brought it back and held it out for Hawkeye. "Strawberry, eat." Kyl spoke.
After Hawkeye had taken the floating strawberry he had gotten he dove beneath the water for other toys and letters. Some of the letters he used to spell other words that were more close to his own language. Telling Hawkeye the words he had mostly spelled out. "Zusa, revo, and avee." Kyl said pointing out each word.
