He could see something in Hitch's face, though Rhys wasn't quite sure what and didn't want to press anything that might make him upset. But he knew just how little confidence his husband had in himself; how self deprecating and self-loathing even sometimes. He had watched Hitch go from hating and hiding who he'd been to slowly coming to accept it, and Rhys didn't want to lose that - or Hitch.

His fingers drifted over Hitch's cheek, skimmed over his lips, then came to rest at his jaw. "I'd be down for a dog too," said Rhys, a little shyly, then let both of his palms press against Hitch's bare chest, wincing slightly as he tried to stretch his leg out a bit more. Really, this position was not a very good one, but moving seemed ill advised at the moment. "Bird? Do you mean little parakeets? Those little...flitty things?"

His expression shifted from one of amusement to something softer, gentler. Rhys bent over his husband, reaching to catch Hitch's face between his hands, palms against his cheeks so that Hitch would have to look him in the face. He scooted a bit further up, taking some of the pressure off of his bad leg, resting on Hitch's hips.

"Hey," said Rhys softly, eyes searching Hitch's. "You know that I love you more than anything or anyone else in the world, right?"

Those lovely, soft, wandering hands... Hitch's lips curled beneath Rhys' fingers, pressing a light kiss there before they flitted away. He didn't mind his husband leaning on him, in any capacity - Hitch knew he could lift Rhys without much effort when it came down to it. Rhys might have the height, but Hitch had the muscle, and maybe that's why he never really minded his beloved standing a few inches over him.

"Are they the ******** that talk?" he mused like it was a real, serious question. Then he snickered. "Sure, why not, one of those. I - "

Rhy's hands had returned to his face, and his body had shifted in just sure a way that made Hitch gasp. And look at him he did, and Hitch stared hard, with a passion and warmth that was unique to him even if he didn't know it. "That I know, " he breathed out, and he did know it. "An' I know it makes me the luckiest ******** that ever was."

He wished, more than ever, that he could take away Hitch's dislike of himself. That he could somehow make him see just what kind of person he was, that he could somehow teach Hitch that he'd taken Rhys from the sad shell of who he'd been before and had turned him into the person he was now. And while some of his memories were still in pieces, gaping holes where there should have been more, it didn't matter. Hitch had saved his life several times over and now...

Now they had this fragile, wonderful, beautiful life together, and Hitch just needed to see it and believe it.

"I think those are parakeets," said Rhys, hiding a smile, though making Hitch lose his train of thought was certainly a bonus, body shifting against body. He felt breathless at the look in Hitch's eyes, at the sheer intensity of that gaze, a warmth rising in Rhys' chest, his face, somewhere low in the pit of his stomach.

He would never tire of this. He would never bore of this, this look in Hitch's face.

Rhys reached for one of Hitch's hands, took it and placed it against his own bare chest so that he could feel the beat of Rhys' heart, pounding a little unsteadily, fingers tightening in their hold to keep them there. Rhys' other hand was still pressed against the side of his husband's face.

"I love you," he said softly. "No matter what. Whether we have kids, or a dog, or birds that speak foul language at us, or none of those things. I love you, Logan."

He pressed Hitch's hand against his chest a little harder, something edging the words with a little more intensity.

"I love you," Rhys repeated, staring into Hitch's eyes. "You. All of you. Only you."

Hitch had a lot of favorite things about Rhys; maybe it was kind of silly that his heartbeat was one of them, but he hadn't really been super close or affectionate with anyone before Rhys (and he had no interest in being with anyone like that now). That heartbeat was a sign that he was there with Hitch, and there were few things more soothing on a sleepless night than laying his head lightly there, listening to his breathing and the sound of his heart. Those moments felt stolen, but that just made them more precious.

They said 'I love you' a lot. Especially considering the kind of work they did - not that Rhys went out as Emrys often on his own (******** or he hoped not; not like he knew what his husband did when he was at work), but it just seemed extra important to say those 'I love you's before they went anywhere. Then in the morning. At night. In those special, sweet moments during the day. During those warm, tender moments between the sheets. Not that they'd lost their potency, far from that, but -

When Rhys said it like this, though, he got flustered all over again, teeth flashing white against the stark red of his cheeks as he smiled.

"You sound like you're tryin' to convince me or somethin', " he said with a little added softness, and he tilted his head first to kiss his husband's wrist, light and sweet. Then he craned his neck, trying to sit up, trying to get close enough to kiss him properly. He ignored the voice that asked why; it was always there, but so much easier to push away in moments like these. "I love you too; more than anythin'. More than life, more than music, an' definitely more than a yappy kid that I ********' refuse to share a bed with - more than anythin' babe. Anythin'."

In all honesty, a part of him was trying to convince Hitch. Rhys shifted again, mostly to take the weight off of his bad leg, still stretched a little awkwardly in front of him, but also because he had liked the sound that Hitch made when he'd moved earlier, and liked that he had been the one to cause it.

And he knew he was making Hitch flustered, and this was endearing, because Hitch's flustered nature was one of Rhys's secret favorite aspects of him, in spite of it being a source of embarrassment for his husband. Rhys curled his fingers against Hitch's chest.

"Maybe I am," he said softly, and then felt his breath stutter a little as Hitch's lips pressed against his wrist. He moved again as Hitch pushed up and met the kiss with a gentle one of his own, deliberately not lingering, as much as he wanted to, drawing back so that he could look at his husband. "Sometimes we all just need...a little reminder, right?"

His fingers splayed over bare skin, feeling the truth of the words sinking into him, his heartbeat and pulse both unsteady.

"You kissed m-me like that before," Rhys said, very softly. "Back when we...when we first met. You kissed my wrist."

The 'maybe' made him laugh, but belly-deep, but light and airy in his rasping way. Although he really did want Rhys to linger, still leaning up even after the kiss had run its course.

"Maybe, " he echoed back, flashing that toothy grin again. Then it softened a little, thoughtfully, and he hummed, leaning back again with a low sigh. "Maybe we do."

Hitch looked off to a side, frowning, kind of like he was wrestling with himself whether or not to say something. He kept a hold of Tolliver's wrist, though, brightening again at the memory. "I did, huh? Yeah, I - I did, " and he laughed a bit again, warmed by it. He repeated the gesture, nuzzling against the soft side of his wrist once he was finished, and then gave a very cheeky grin.

"Y'know... we could relive some other memories here too, y'know. I've got a few in mind."

He loved Hitch's laughs, how they came from every part of him, from his stomach to his chest to his throat to his mouth. The laughter was such a precious thing, echoing around them, and Rhys couldn't help but smile, fingers twitching a little in his husband's grasp.

The kiss to his wrist made his heart stutter. Rhys bit his lip, hiding a smile, but failing at it, because Hitch was nuzzling his wrist and this was also precious but also something else, something that was making him shiver a little, warmth spreading through him.

"Really?" he said softly, leaning closer, but not getting any nearer than a few inches away, deliberately. "You do, do you?"

Rhys tugged at his wrist a little, playfully. "What sort of ideas?"
