Kavinsky had grown way too quiet after Rob had repeated himself, making the lawyer wonder if he hadn't botched it up on a major level. But he'd been so certain, so positive that he'd double checked himself over and over again, what could have gone wrong in all of…

His question sounded uncertain, as if suspicious that Banks had used the improper tense when saying he is a friend as opposed to was. It was curious, considering how quickly he seemed ready to drop him altogether - why would he care?

Turning around, he lingered right at the split between kitchen and living room, leaning against the doorframe as he shrugged, eyes finally rising to meet the other’s.

“Well yeah. I mean, you're the closest friend I've got, Kavinsky.”

He paused, chewing on his bottom lip.

“Just sounded like you'd had enough of me, I guess.”

Tension was thick in the room, almost too much to even pretend like they could cut through and Kavinsky was ready to bolt because it was too much. But, for whatever reason, he remained planted, in place as he waited for the answer to his tentative, half-spoken question.

The answer didn't lift any of the emotions that were clearly saddled upon both men's shoulders and he shrugged.

He wasn't one for apologies and in his defense, Banks said a lot of s**t that sounded like a problem and it had all just snowballed into escalations. K could have chilled a little bit, but the world wasn't a safe place and he didn't know what person would turn into an enemy just because of his sexuality.

"My sexuality is my business and I keep my business private," Kavinsky said, making a point to look at him. "But now you know. I don't make it public but I don't hide it either and if you have a problem with that, then yeah that's the end of it." He shrugged again. "If you don't then...then you don't and things can be what they were before you knew."

Arms rose to fold across his chest as he quietly listened to the options the younger man was offering to him. His expression remained unreadable, the tired look around his eyes a near permanent fixture these days. His mouth gave away nothing, despite the warring debate going on beneath the mess of tousled brown hair.

Once Kavinsky was finished, Rob allowed silence to linger between them for a few minutes before finally responding.

“Y’know,” he said dryly, mouth crooking up into an almost wry looking smirk, “It would be pretty hypocritical of me to judge you about being gay when I--”

His words were cut short by the shrill sound of the egg timer going off, the high pitched series of beeps beckoning their attention back towards the pot on the stove. The lawyer's mouth remained open for a moment, as if hesitating to even bother with finishing his thought.

Shaking his head, arms relaxed as he made his way towards the stove. The sentence remained unfinished, a victim of poor timing. Passing the Russian, eyes cut over to him for a split second as he mused aloud, “Saved by the bell, looks like.”

The cover was lifted and the burner turned off. Placing the large spoon, he started to stir the contents as he remarked idly, “Can't burn your first lesson, after all.”

Whatever Banks had planned to say was lost when the timer's annoying sound filled the space of the room and Kavinsky watched with some scrutiny as all attempts at continuing the sentence was lost. The lawyer didn't even try to pick up where he left off, acting as if the interruption was a sign that he shouldn't say whatever he was going to say.

The Russian's mouth opened, then promptly shut, the statement (or was it a question) swallowed back down his throat.

Whatever it was wasn't important and he wasn't going to make things more tense and awkward by pushing the subject. If it mattered, it would come up again later.

"Why not? Burning gives it character." The remark was incredibly dry, but the was a glint in his eye, a hint of amusement that might've made his mouth twitch in an almost smile.

"Maybe I don't like things perfect."

An eyebrow rose, as if silently questioning if bait had been set out for him with the last comment.

"Then you're in luck, not many perfect things 'round here nowadays."

The surface of the pot's contents were smoothed out and the wooden spoon set aside as the lawyer shifted to return to the sink, lifting the rice he'd prepared earlier for the occasion. "I'm sure your pantry has seen a lot of character, if that's the case."

The rice was spread atop the top, the spoon plucked up and used to smooth across the surface until it was a nice flat sheet. Water soon applied, Rob busied his time with flitting around the kitchen, cleaning up various messes as the water soaked into the entire meal.

"I've got some cake in the fridge that you and Mory can take home with the food," he remarked casually as he did his best to organize the dirty dishes that had accumulated themselves in the now-empty sink. "If she's allowed to have that sort of sweet, of course. Someone at work got it for me but I haven't been in the mood."

That someone had been himself; the idea of getting a German chocolate cake had been appealing in thought - a tradition he'd done for himself over the years he'd celebrated on his lonesome. By the time the confection had made it home, though, his lack of appetite had struck once again. Then, on top of the awkward conversation, his appetite altogether had dissipated - but that was for the best, it meant more food for the young girl, maybe leftovers for them both to have in the days to come.

At least this way someone would benefit from his cooking, right?

One of the Tupperware dishes made it out onto the counter before he finally returned to the meal. He seemed to stare at the contents for a moment before pausing, then turning to fetch a fork from one of the counter drawers.

Scraping part of the edge of the plov onto the utensil, he slipped the bite into his mouth and seemed satisfied with the way it'd turned out.

"Mmm. Not bad - I'd say your first meal turned out almost perfect."

Turning back to the dish, he scooped up another bite from the edge of the pan and moved to face the looming Russian. One hand held protectively beneath the fork for any wayward rice grains while the other rose, offering the fork and the sample out towards the teenager.

"C'mere, try this. Bet you won't go back to your chicken stuff again after this."

If Banks was hoping for some sort of revelation or even a true heart to heart, then he was likely to be disappointed. Kavinsky hadn't stomped off or left and was leaving the door of their tentative friendship cracked open enough for it to continue, but he wasn't about to get touchy feely or mushy. It wasn't his style.

Besides, he didn't really feel like potentially opening another can of worms with whatever he might've said earlier. As far as he was concerned, they were going to move forward and put that ugly smear behind them.

"It has what I need," he retorted, almost defensively. In truth the cupboard was relatively barren, as he hadn't gone grocery shopping properly in some time, but Banks didn't need to know that. There was food in it, just cheap boxes of pasta-like meals, a thing of cereal and some others. Nothing special but something to eat in a pinch.

He'd lost track of how many times he'd eaten just buttered noodles, or rice and butter and canned chicken despite how his companion liked to rag on it.

"Could bring Mory over tomorrow, eat it all together if you'd rather." A small offer he thought would mean than it should've to the lawyer.

Food was offered on a fork and a white brow arched before he stepped forward, wrapped his fingers around the man's wrist to make sure it stayed steady when he opened his mouth and allowed him to be fed. Teeth scraped against the metal as he chewed and swallowed his bite, tongue licking his lips after. "Not bad, but nothing like baba's."

He didn't let go.

The gesture was playful, a small attempt to return things to a casual state between the two of them. He was a cook, Kavinsky was a taste tester. It was a simple move. Innocent in nature.

It was also hard to suppress a smirk as he saw the quizzical look from the younger man but the smug expression was wiped away, distorting into a surprised look as the burly Russian stepped forward and seized his wrist in return.

Eyes seemed transfixed on the mouth that took in the food, chapped lips chewing the plov in what felt like slow motion. It took the lawyer a few seconds to realize he'd had an offer made towards him concerning their dinner.

“I-It would be better fresh.” Blink, stare, stare. “And I-I'm not very hungry anymore, there's no sense in letting it go to waste.”

He swallowed hard as the spoon was released, leaving K’s mouth empty as his own breath caught in his throat. While the spoon was freed, his wrist wasn't and Banks was all-too aware of the firm grip still lingering around the relatively slender wrist.

It was tempting to pull away but twitchy fingers ended up dropping the spoon instead as hazel eyes watched the tongue dart out, collecting any wayward tastes while adding a subtle shine to otherwise weathered lips. The spoon clattered loudly against the tile upon impact, barely muffling the soft, strangled noise that left Robert Banks’s throat.

He came to his senses in a matter of moments, applying his best smile as he closed his eyes in an attempt to break the spell that'd been cast.

“Ha, wow, I don't know why I'm so clumsy today.”

"Won't be fresh by the time I get back," K countered, finally releasing the lawyer's wrist to wipe at the corner of his mouth. Knees bent and he was retrieving the fallen spoon, dropped by a caught off guard man who clearly had other things on his mind.

"You sure it's you being clumsy Banks?"

The question was asked as the teen straightened, toss the spoon in to the sink in one fluid motion before fingers slid into the front of his jean pockets and he stepped closer.

"You've been actin' weird for a while." He stepped forward until doing so would make him step on the other man's toes. "What aren't you saying?"

Banks already looked like he'd fold under pressure with his wispy state and the way his clothing was all too big for him and ill-fitting, something he'd never pin the lawyer for in a hundred years.

And he'd cut himself off, abandoned whatever he was gonna say when the timer went off. Kavinsky was curious.

His released wrist quickly found its way to the front of his shirt, his other hand rising to begin idly rubbing on the slender hand, as if it'd been held too tightly. The question had his eyes opening again, just in time to see the spoon clatter and land perfectly atop the other dishes waiting to be cleaned.

While Rob appeared anxious and nervous, it seemed Kavinsky was anything but.

"Weird? What does that even mea--"

His words were cut short as the larger man decided to invade his personal space, stepping forward until Rob felt like a wilting flower beside him. Hands shifted to search for counter space behind him, to catch himself from teetering off balance as feet shuffled backwards the few inches he had left to escape into.

"What aren't you saying?"

s**t. What was he supposed to say to that?

He'd swallowed the courage he'd managed to muster, taking the egg timer's alarm to be a sign that it wasn't the right time for such discussions. That it was a stupid thought to bring up in the first place, that it was better off left unspoken. But no - no - Kavinsky wasn't letting it go.

s**t.

"Look, K, if you haven't picked up on it yet, it's..." His eyes closed as a jumble of words crossed his mind, all at the same time. "Not that I'd... I mean, sure it was awkward as ******** to --"

Stopping, he shook his head to dismiss the chaos in his brain as fingers dug into the counter top behind him. <******** it. Just, <******** it.

Eyes reopened and he sighed.

"You're a dense son of a b***h sometimes, you know that?"

Fingers combed roughly through his hair as he refused to look directly into the silver eyes staring him down, "This is like, the worst kept secret ever - even Mory has it figured out, for christ's sake."

"You're sweet on him."

Her words wouldn't shut up in the back of his mind and he couldn't deny it any longer. He was tired of fighting it, of trying to pretend it wasn't true.

Robert Banks was, without a doubt, attracted to Pietro Vladimir Ilya Ivan Kavinsky.

Kavinsky knew what to expect, he had spent enough time around the lawyer to know what he was like when he lose the upper hand or when he was too timid to say things because it might ruin one of the little things he actually gave a s**t about. Robert Banks was going to dodge the questions in whatever fanciful bullshit way he could manage.

When he retreated, K pressed forward.

Banks wasn't going to get off without saying it or whatever excuse he came up with. So he waited, watching the lawyer stutter and stammer over what he might say. In the end, he chickened out, which the Russian should have expected and he shook his head.

"It's not about knowing," he stated, dryly before he inched closer, one leg coaxing both of Banks's apart. He knew, or he suspected anyway and the blow up, the almost confession, it cemented things. Just like the dodging did, the admission without admitting anything.

Well, Pietro Vladimir Ilya Ivan Kavinsky was more of a man of action than he was a talker so instead of continuing to talk, he merely reached for the back of Robert Banks's head and drew it towards his for a kiss.

"It's about you ******** saying it," he concluded, when he decided to end the kiss.

What little breathing room he'd spaced between them was quickly swallowed by the relentless Russian. It didn't matter how hard his back pressed into the counter, or how slim his stomach had grown over his indifference towards food. Persistence had the man probably fifty, maybe even sixty pounds heavier than him forcing his way into Banks's personal bubble.

The first comment was confusing but not nearly as confusing as feeling the pressure separating his thighs and forcing them to spread. A heavy weight pushed its way between them, keeping him in place. He was pinned - pinned like a cornered mouse staring up at the smirking cat.

Oh god.

The built-up frustration was quickly dissipating, the older man trying to figure out what the younger man's game was. When the warm, thick fingers cradled the back of his head and drew him in, hazel eyes grew wide as his breath was stolen away by the feel of chapped lips pressing a demanding, knowing kiss against his.

His knees were threatening to buckle, the lawyer keeping his weight pushed towards the counter. The moment felt too short, like his mind failed to have enough time to register what had happened until after it was over. The pounding in his chest, however, assured him that it had indeed really happened. His heart was racing so quickly that it felt like a constant thrum instead of a beat, Kavinsky's words a faint echo in the back of his head.

Saying it?

He knew? He'd known?

He just wanted him to say it?

...............

"I like you."

The words were quiet and hoarse, eyes forcing themselves to stay trained on the silver gazing directly back at him. He felt light-headed, like the entire moment was surreal. "I really like you."

One hand left the counter, shifting until his palm slid into place against the strong jaw of the other man. Soft fingertips pressed lightly into the tan cheek, his thumb securing the other side of his face in hopes of keeping him from pulling away. He leaned forward before the cowardice could overtake him, taking the next kiss for himself.

There had been a small expectancy that perhaps Banks would shove him away, that he'd misjudged it all and that Mory's constant ribbing had only put false ideas in his head.

But there Banks was, saying everything they'd been dancing around for ******** knew how long.

I like you. But he didn't stop there. I really like you. He even followed it up with a second kiss, where he'd pulled the Russian back to him, their mouths fitting together easily. From there it was easy for Kavinsky to push back into the kiss, pressing his weight more firmly into the more wiry man.

Hands slid down, finding homes on either side of Banks's hips, thumbs pressing into pelvis bones as his mouth opened to deepen their kiss and allow his tongue to slide into the other man's mouth.

When he pulled back, sucking on Banks's bottom lip he laughed almost exasperatedly.

"Mory's gonna have a field day with this."

He didn't respond back with words but the way the Russian returned the kiss was all Banks needed to know to assure himself that the attraction was mutual between them.

It had been longer than he cared to admit since he'd last kissed someone and this was the most unusual kiss by far. Chapped lips were rougher than the tender ones he’d pressed against years before and he'd never had a partner who'd taken control of the kissing. He was always the one in charge but it was clear that Kavinsky had no intentions of backing down.

As he could feel the pressure of fingertips pushing down into the fabric of his sweatpants, his mouth instinctively opened, compliant for the tongue inviting itself inside. He tasted of plov and cigarettes, the kiss as aggressive as the man giving it. Like the first, it ended sooner than he was prepared for it to, leaving him breathless and dizzy.

Banks might have laughed back at the comment, had he not been standing there with a dazed expression on his face. Eyes were already growing half-lidded, pupils dilated as his bottom lip was already beginning to show signs of swelling.

Hearing Kavinsky laugh, though, was unexpected but delightfully so. He offered an almost goofy grin in return, his unbalanced torso swaying slightly as the younger man's grip held him in place.

“Yeah? Well hell, I'm having a pretty good day of it, myself.”

"She's going to be insufferable when she finds out," Kavinsky mumbled, pushing his forehead against Banks's as he took a minute to catch his breath. His thumbs slipped upwards, just beneath the hem of the shirt the man wore until they were pressing against soft skin. His head shifted and he kissed the edge of Banks' mouth, then his jaw, and onward until he was kissing the man's throat.

"Happy ********' birthday," he paused, uncertain how he wanted to end the sentence, "Robbie."

He wouldn't say it, but special people in his life got nicknames. Ellis was Ellie, Mordred was Mory, and now, Banks was now Robbie because as much as he didn't want to admit it, the lawyer was undeniably someone he wanted to keep around for as long as the a*****e wanted to put up with him.

Chapped lips parted and his teeth grazed the soft skin of Banks's neck as his mouth opened only to bite down, albeit harshly, before he was sucking on the skin, tongue running over the indents left behind.

He continued to sway, offering a husky laugh at the comment concerning the other man's ward. She'd alluded to the idea of the two men coming together but he'd dismissed it, denying both his own forbidden thoughts and the notion that the white haired teenager would have anything to do with a broken lawyer.

“You may as well adopt her and make it official, you know. No sense in taking on the role of Daddy without the title.”

Eyes closed as he felt hands explore upwards, his mouth opening slightly as he felt warm lips return. The feeling was fleeting, however, kisses finding their way down pale skin to the point where he tilted his head back to allow his companion better access.

The nickname caught him off guard but not nearly as much as the teeth sinking into his throat did. A soft whimper escaped before he could catch himself, fingers shifting from the jaw he was cupping to tighten into white hair, nails scraping against the other man’s scalp. His free hand was forced to reach out, grabbing at the front of the Russian's shirt and twisting fingers into the fabric to keep himself standing straight as he whimpered, “<******** class="quote">
