"Hey, are you okay?" For the first time in a little bit, Mahmud wasn't smiling anymore. Instead, he seemed far more worried than the situation called for, as he rest his hand on Cerpin's shoulder. "Seriously are you going to be alright? That looks nasty... do you need help at all?" No way in hell was he going to lose his friend to being a zombie... that WAS something he could stop, right?

There wasn't much time to contemplate that... apparently, there was about fifteen zombies coming this way again. Sucking his breath in between his teeth, Mahmud looked to Aerona and Sascha. "Guys we should be ready, there's a lot... and Cerpin's hurt so..." Then he looked back to Cerpin and stated "Maybe you should take a rest from this round."

This time, Mahmud may have to fight again... which really, ******** him up a bit on the inside but was better than Cerpin getting hurt.

"Ah, thanks, Aerona." Cerpin raised an eyebrow and caught the antiseptic. He hadn't expected her to lend it to him. Maybe she was kinder than he thought. Mahmud mentioned taking a rest but the purpleblood shook his head. Cerpin Sugall never sat on the sidelines of anything. Applying the antiseptic stung painfully but he didn't want to show genuine weakness to the others and so he opted to stage some theatrics instead. Another round of zombies staggered towards them and he jumped into the fray, attacking with a low slash at the legs of several of them. If they couldn't walk, it'd be immensely harder for these things to bother them.

"I don't think I'm going to make it guys-" He elbowed a daywalker in the face before clutching at the wound on his upper arm again. "Unless... I get one true kiss..." He fell on his back dramatically on the floor, hand to his forehead in posed distress. Maybe he shouldn't be messing around like this in the middle of a fight but they'd battled endless hordes of these before with no trouble. A little play would be fine.

She snorted. “Handyman, come on! Can’t you see Prince over here needs a little fairy tale cure?” Prince. That one might stick.

This time, Aerona was prepared. She wasn’t going to be shown up this time. She exhaled, calculated. Blowing stuff up in space was unadvisable. One missed charge causing a leak in here would kill them instantly. Fortunately, swamp life wasn’t all sticks and mud. Time spent brooding meant time spent in the workshop, engineering, planning. “This one’s for you, meathead,” she grunted under her breath. Aerona’s bootfalls echoed on the hard metal and laminate of the ship. “Everyone out of the way! Back up behind me if you’re not just layin’ there!” She barked. She fished around in her belt for a grapefruit-sized canister and clicked off the safety, now running directly towards Cerpin and the remaining undead.

“Fire in the hole, assholes!” She roared. She slid up to Cerpin, wound up a pitch and tossed the explosive in front of their quarry. Aerona immediately twisted and dropped around Cerpin, shielding herself and the purpleblood in a face to face huddle.

Click!

“When you take me out? You’re meeting my mom.”

The device detonated, for a moment bathing the party in white light. Like a blooming firework in high speed, red-hot hooks blasted from the cone of her explosive and straight through six shamblers, slicing through them as easily as if they were smoke. Aerona lifted herself off of Cerpin, clapping her hands together for a job well done.

To her disappointment, a single zombie remained, a few hooks caught in its sniffnode and chest. “Seriously!” She bust into laughter, coughing a bit through the residual smoke of the shrapnel bomb. “Look at this guy! He owes me for those free piercings. Sascha, that’s yours.”

She dusted off some of the ash from her sleeves. “Oh yeah, and Cerpin still needs a kiss.”

Sascha attacks the zombies!

HP: 16/20
Military Weapon: +1 DMG
Trinkets:
3/3 Defense Style A: 2 damage is detracted from last incoming attack.
1/1 Defense Style B: Nullify damage from the last attack.
Telekinesis: 2/2 Offensive Style B: Attack does double damage, and detracts 1 health from opponent every remaining turn. Recurring damage effect stacks.

More zombies. Not surprising, but not entirely unwelcome, either. If their group wasn't prepared for the swarm by now, they were better off just being left in space.

Cerpin was quick to take Aerona's antiseptic, and quicker still to get back into the fray. He chopped a number of them down like trees, only to fall to the floor himself. Sascha deadpanned at the display. "Seriously..?"

Then Aerona pulled out a grenade. "SERIOUSLY!?" Sascha ducked down, covering his face with his arms as the light went off. Heat rushed over the group, followed by the sharp sting of debris, and the moist spatter of something Sascha didn't want to think about. Once Sascha could make out Aerona's voice over the ringing in his spongeclots, he returned to a standing position.

"You've gotta be kidding me," Sascha muttered. There was a single zombie remaining. It stood among the ash and pieces of its companions almost comically. Sascha resisted the urge to roll his eyes as he extended his hand. With a flash, the zombie popped backwards with a telekinetic shove. It tumbled and skidded to the end of the hallway where it stayed.

Sascha looked over at Aerona and Cerpin, then at Mahmud. Then he touched his nose.

Sascha does 7 damage!

"That..." Mahmud whispered to himself, a stunned expression on his face. "That was...." he then said a little louder, before shouting loudly "AWESOME" Holy s**t these guys were cool, these guys were chill. These guys got him so excited he let out a whoop of joy and pumped both fists in the air. Explosives! Slicing! Explosives slicing! And... and wait, was there psychic s**t done too?! Oh man was this awesome. Awesome, and he didn't even have to lift a finger and fight, thus being the... erm... pacifist he wanted to be.

Okay, so it wasn't pacifistic to cheer at bodies getting mangled... but as long as he didn't have to hurt them himself, Mahmud was a happy camper.

Dancing excitedly in place, Mahmud hadn't notice at first when Sascha put his finger to his nose. But once he did (and realized he wasn't trying to pick it), he gave a little laugh. "Oh I see how this is." With a grin and dramatic sigh, he strolled over to Cerpin and crouched down.

"Oy, sleeping beauty, time to get up." He then proceeded to plant a big kiss on his hand, and then slap Cerpin in the forehead with it. "I think I saw something a little ways past the daywalkers. Lets get going."

"What the hell?" He hadn't been expecting the grenade. Cerpin stared wide eyed in surprise as Aerona crouched face to face with him, a devious grin on her face as explosions went off behind her. She straightened up, delivering some playful quip that he partially missed due to the ringing in his head. Sitting upright, he put a hand to the side of his head as Sascha took care of the remaining zombie. He didn't notice Mahmud come closer until the other boy spoke. Turning to pay attention, he accidentally lined himself up perfectly for the kiss slap and groaned in pain.

"What the ********> Geez, Mahmud." Rubbing at the sore spot, he pulled himself to his feet. He was not surprised that nobody here had wanted to actually kiss him but he hadn't been expecting a punch to the thinkpan. Following the group, they stopped in front of a door and he tried the handle. No luck.

"Looks like it's locked." Cerpin shrugged and leaned his back against the wall next to the door. He wasn't going to hurt himself breaking it down. He really wished Tevini were here right now. They could've used someone who knew how to disarm and unlock the doors. What she lacked in combat prowess, she made up for in intelligence.

"Sounds like a job for a brave and altruistic ruler." He waved at the door with a flourish, looking to the squad commander expectantly.

Sascha breaks open the door!

HP: 11/20

1/1 Defense Style B: Nullify damage from the last attack.
Telekinesis: 2/2 Offensive Style B: Attack does double damage, and detracts 1 health from opponent every remaining turn. Recurring damage effect stacks.

Sascha chuckled at Mahmud's "kiss" and Cerpin's reaction. He hadn't expected this space crew to be such a cool hang. He supposed they were under his command, after all. Sascha sauntered after Cerpin and Mahmud, joining them at the door.

"Oh yeah?" He eyed the door before trying the handle himself. No dice. Sascha backed up, then threw himself at the door. His shoulder connected with a craack. Sascha grunted and bounced off weakly. The door was scuffed, but otherwise unharmed. Unlike Sascha.

Sascha's unsteadiness was the only indication that he'd been injured. He looked more angry than anything. "Fine." One arm hung at his side. The other thrust out towards the door.

For a second, nothing happened. Then the door began to creak. The air fizzed. THUNK. THUNK. THUNK. The door puckered inward. A deep groan filled the hallway, and then the door fell inward.

The ship shuddered with the force of the crash. Sascha still looked irritated, but satisfied. He wiped his upper lip, smearing blood across his face.

"Doesn't look locked to me."

This is a mini-boss battle, the full rules and mechanics of which can be reviewed here.

2. ... Bellicose... (players take 2x the amount of damage on their first turn)
3. ... Armoured... (only 2 players per turn may use a special artifact/ability/item)

If you rolled a 3, take 3 dmg.
If you rolled a 4, take 3 dmg.
If you rolled a 5, take 2 dmg.
If you rolled a 6, take 2 dmg. Your attack this turn does double damage.
If all party members reach 0hp, look below:
You must make a tactical retreat! Scrambling back out of the room,
you barely make it to the pod with all your limbs attached.
Better luck next time! You have retreated from your mission and returned back to the docking area! Squad commanders, be sure to report in!

If the mini-boss reaches 0hp, look below:

If this is your first or second mini-boss fight look below:

If a member of your team is a trained Discipline or Endurace specialist OR registered as in-training for either:

You can close your eyes and draw on inner reserves to keep going. This can only be done once per ship exploration per troll trained.
If you are a Journeytroll or higher in your skill: Restore 1d10+3 OR 1/3rd (rounded down) of your hp.
If you are a Novice in your skill: Restore 1d8+2 OR 1/4th (rounded down) of your hp.
If you are training your skill: Restore 1d6+1 hp.
You cannot roll the dice then choose the flat restoration, one must be picked beforehand.

If a member of your team is a trained Troll Relations or Leadership specialist OR registered as in-training for either:

You can manage to cheer, rally, or cajole your teammates into finding more energy. This can only be done once per ship exploration per troll trained.

If this is your third mini-boss fight, you have reached the control room! Roll 1d4 and look in the spoiler below:

1 - Powering on the ship is easy enough, with the instructions from headquarters in your ear. The screens show that the ship is functioning perfectly, and headquarters patches in the control of a remote helmsman. They wait until you have returned to your boarding pod and leave, before steering the ship away.*
2 - Powering on the ship is easy enough, with the instructions from headquarters in your ear. As the screens boot up however, dozens of red warnings and errors flash across the screen. It seems like there has been critical damage to the ship in multiple places. Your team is instructed to leave the small black boxes containing deadly explosives in key positions on your return path to the exit.
3- The ship refuses to power on, even after you follow headquarters instructions to make sure they are plugged in, and hitting ctrl-alt-del. It looks like something core is not functioning. Your team is instructed to leave the small black boxes containing deadly explosives in key positions on your return path to the exit.
4- Powering on the ship is easy enough, with the instructions from headquarters in your ear. The screens show that the ship is functioning perfectly, and headquarters patches in the control of a remote helmsman. They wait until you have returned to your boarding pod and leave, before steering the boarding vessel away.*
If any troll in the party has helmsman authority, they can steer the ship to given coordinates, then return to the boarding vessel with the rest of the team.
Congratulations! You have completed your mission and returned back to the docking area! Squad commanders, be sure to report in!

"Whoa. Did pre-Reginian war tactics include a gerbil cavalry?" Aerona commented. The stink that was unleashed from beyond the door was tremendous. "Looks like we'll have to take out these small fries."

With the gerbils stunned, Aerona swept in with a volley of small cherry bombs peppering the crowd. It was a significantly more successful attack. She huffed with satisfaction as the charred remains of her kills. Just then, a group of the creatures began advancing up her boots, shearing through the outer layers of her suit with their sharp teeth.

"Whoa, whoa!"

More gerbils? And this time they had armor? Seriously, who had time to make these guys tiny armor?! Who had time to invest in that? "Hang in there Aerona!" Dashing forward, Mahmud did probably the smartest (yet dumbest) thing he could think of at the time, and started trying to peel off little creatures and stomp on them. "Sorry, I don't want to stab you! Or punch you!" It wasn't a TON of help, but caused a sizable enough distraction where Mahmud drew their attention instead.

"Ack!" Their squeaking shouldn't have brought the terror it did, but boy howdy. Did those little squeakers know how to swarm or what? "A little help, please!" he called out, as they began to nibble at him as well. Hopefully, the teeth marks didn't come out of any sort of pay...

"More of these buggers? Ugh." Cerpin made a face at the sight of the gerbils rolling around the room. He hated fighting these things because they were so small and fast. Not to mention, just kind of weird. He was certain that the next race to take over the galaxy after trolls would probably be gerbils. Stomping some out, he let out an impressed whistle at the explosions going off in the room.

"Ha! Nice show, firecracker! Mahmud, dude, look alive-" Cerpin ran his sword along the ground to slice (or at least herd) the gerbils. He began to swirl and shuffle along to an imaginary beat, showing off some dance moves. You had to do something to entertain yourself on all these lifeless ships after all.

"Show us what you got, Sasch!"

Sascha attacks the decomposing, armored zombie gerbil pack!

HP: 7/20
Military Weapon: +1 DMG
Trinkets:
3/3 Defense Style A: 2 damage is detracted from last incoming attack.
1/1 Defense Style B: Nullify damage from the last attack.
Telekinesis: 2/2 Offensive Style B: Attack does double damage, and detracts 1 health from opponent every remaining turn. Recurring damage effect stacks.

Space seemed to have a bizarrely rejuvenating effect on both daywalkers and gerbils. Sascha briefly wondered if there was some kind of connection. Then he realized he'd rather just fight the two of them.

He looked at the state of the room. Aerona was clearly the best suited to fighting these bastards, but was currently preoccupied, and by extension, so was Mahmud. Cerpin was... Cerpin was busting out some dance moves. Effective dance moves, but hilariously at-odds with the misfortune of the rest of their party.

Perhaps "party" was the wrong term.

"Yeah, yeah. Let me show you how a real Death Dancer operates."

Sascha jumped into the room, skidding to the floor and bulldozing a number of gerbils. They were foul, bitey little gremlins, but much harder to fight when you weren't on their level. Sascha kicked out his leg, spinning his body and sweeping gerbils across the room. The armor made a satisfying noise as it ricocheted off the floors and walls.

Sascha used his momentum to roll onto his shoulders, then his forearms. With a shove, Sascha tossed himself back onto his feet. He winced visibly. His shoulder was still damaged from the door. Sascha felt a lot of pain, but no regrets. He wasn't about to let Cerpin show him up on any playing field, much less one he played at a professional level.

Sascha does 8 damage!

There were so few gerbils left, but not located close enough to dance-attack without looking like a total dweeb. Sascha considered the field and wiped the bottom of his face. His damned nosebleed would not let up. Regardless, he struck out with his good arm. The last of the gerbils sparked and swirled across the floor like a dust devil. Sascha lined up his shot... and kicked! Gerbils spattered against the opposite wall. Sascha caught himself and grinned.

How did he end up on his knees? Sascha's eyes rolled back and he swayed forward. "Ggh..." Blood spattered the floor between his hands. Sascha took as deep of a breath as he could stomach. Stupid... nosebleed... He was fine. Sascha was fine.

Aerona does BIG damages and finishes the gerbils!

"Hey, thanks, Mahmud --" Aerona stuttered, allowing the orangeblood to hurriedly assist her in gerbil removal. As the bulk of the herd was thinned, she dispatched one with a sharp kick and reached down to her gerbil-bitten boot to procure a sizeable knife.

She caught a view of Cerpin -dancing, of all things - her breathing now labored. Chewed through and beginning to feel her fatigue from the ship, Aerona simply rolled her eyes.

Suddenly, she caught a glimpse of Sascha. "Hey!" A last low swing at a twitching gerbil and she escaped from the biting nightmare. Aerona rushed over to the budding helmsman, dropping to a knee next to him and clearing some of the carnage out of the way.

"Sascha.... Hey, you okay, man?"

Yellow blood dripped from his nose. She was exhausted from the zombie packs and this wild horde, but he was worse for wear.

"Cerpin, you asshat! Sascha's hurt; get over here!"
