There was almost an audible noise of distress when Yuuri remembered that the bag he’d had with him had been soaked in the rain, along with everything in it. Some school books and notes, along with his wallet and a pair of old, never worn glasses shoved somewhere down into the bottom. If they were cracked or ruined it wouldn’t be much of a loss for him.
But instead of making any noise, as much as he wanted to, Yuuri clenched his teeth and nodded in thanks. There was nothing Lauri could have done, so there was no point in taking out his grievance on his host.
“Thank you,” he said quietly in response about his bag and the things inside, lowering his eyes to the mug in his hands. The question about food was thoughtful, just as Lauri’s attempt to dry out his bag for him.
“Yes, of course. Thank you,” he said again, lifting his head in Lauri’s direction, glad that he didn’t have to decide what to eat. He wouldn’t have been able to. He had no idea what Lauri ate nor what he had, and he absolutely didn’t want to be more of a burden.
“Can I… do anything to help?” he tried, doubting he would be very successful. He wouldn’t blame Lauri if he just wanted him out of the way and not causing problems.

There had been nothing he could have done for Yuuri's belongings at that point beyond what he'd done save perhaps spreading everything out in the vain hopes that it might have some small effect - but Lauri had instead focused on caring for the human component. Lauri finished his coffee off and set the mug down on the tray from earlier. From one of the bedside stands, he produced a remote that was offered to Yuuri, "I only have Netflix and Hulu, but you can watch whatever you want. You should put your foot up. " From his closet, he pulled out two more pillows and a soft, fuzzy throw so that he could get the injured mouse comfortable on his bed. "You can rest, that is enough." But wait, Yuuri kept trying to help...he didn't want to be a burden. "If you can mend, I have a shirt that needs it. That would help. Otherwise, I will start food and bring your things up."

It was okay. Yuuri wasn’t much for material possessions to begin with. He only had the contents of a couple suitcases to his name, after all. And he knew that was more than a lot of people. Still, it was distressing if only because he might not be able to get the money for selling the books at the end of the year. Other than the monetary replacement cost of everything, it wasn’t that important.
Yuuri watched as Lauri finished his coffee and went about getting a remote for him, as well as pillows and a blanket. He’d told Yuuri that he should make himself comfortable, but this was still a strange situation for him. It wasn’t every day that he was rescued by someone, treated, and then offered a place to stay for the night.
"I can mend it," he said with probably a little more enthusiasm than was necessary, his eyes wide with hope for the opportunity to help out in any way he could. Had he ever mended anything before? No, not really. But how difficult could it be?

Hearing that Yuuri could mend seemed to brighten some aspect of the Finn's face, though there was no overt change to his countenance; it was more a micro-expression, if anything. "Ah, excellent." Lauri returned to the closet once more, returning with a final set of items: a patterned button-down in navy with a sleeve that had ripped along the machined seam, and a small sewing kit like one might purchase at any general store. "It would be helpful, if you could fix this." Lauri moved over to the long dresser under the TV and touched the center console, "There are drinks here, if you need something not coffee while I'm cooking." It closed again silently, the pieces fitting in a manner that suggested they had been machined with care. "I will leave you to it, then."

Yuuri did everything he could to not look as nervous as he felt as Lauri went about gathering the torn shirt and sewing supplies for him. He made no attempt to move just yet, or to get comfortable, waiting instead for Lauri to leave him with instructions on what he was allowed to use.
And then Yuuri was left with a couple extra pillows and blanket, the shirt and sewing kit and remote.
Except now he was trying to not let panic set in.
What was he supposed to do with the shirt? Fix it of course. Somehow. Magically. Wouldn’t just getting a new shirt be better? Ah, maybe it was a special shirt. That would mean Lauri was expecting Yuuri to actually know what he was doing.
Well, this was suddenly a horrible idea.
Yuuri groaned to himself, but figured there was no point in giving up just yet. It couldn’t be that difficult.
Gingerly, he eased himself back, putting one of the pillows behind his back, and the other on the bed so he could place his injured ankle on it. The room was still a little chilly, so the blanket was nice. As for the shirt… Yuuri pulled out one of the needles and picked a thread color that matched the shirt. He wasn’t sure how to keep the thread on the needle without knotting it at the end, but he wasn’t sure if that was right. There were also a few minutes in which he just inspected the shirt, turned it inside out to see how the rest of the seams were stitched together. It was obviously done with a machine, but trying to mimic that shouldn’t be too difficult if he tried.
Nervously, he pinched the fabric together and pushed the needle through where the original seam might have been. He’d completely forgotten about the remote and offer of a drink, instead spending the time until Lauri returned working on carefully matching the pattern of the old seam.

Frozen pierogies didn't take a huge amount of time to cook, but Yuuri would be left alone upstairs for about twenty minutes while Lauri prepared not only the main dish, but also a side of salad made with romaine lettuce, cherry tomatoes (whole), grilled chicken breast cut into strips, shredded carrot, and a vinaigrette dressing. Lauri was giving him no choice since those seemed to cause more issue than aid. Everything got piled onto a tray, along with two beers, and Yuuri's still-damp belongings were carried on his arm under the tray. Back in the room, it looked as though his 'guest' was doing well with the shirt, though he couldn't tell at just a glance - the material was in his lap, the kit was out - so he was working on it. That was enough. Lauri set the larger tray down and then the bag. "Thanks. I can do the mending, but it's fiddly and I poke myself a lot." He cleared the smaller coffee tray and set it aside to be taken down with the dinner set once they were done, reducing the amount of clutter on the bed by at least a small amount.

He looked up when Lauri returned, still nervous about his work, but given enough time and good visuals Yuuri felt as though he was a decent self taught learner. It’s what happened when he had no one to really go to for help and needed to figure things out on his own. An opportunity to google it before starting might have been even better, but he didn’t really have that chance.
Yuuri straightened up a bit when Lauri thanked him, feeling proud of himself for maybe not screwing something up and being helpful.
“Your hands are bigger. It’s no wonder you poke yourself,” Yuuri said as he shifted to be able to stay out of the way as he glanced over the arrangement of food his host had made. “You didn’t have to make all this,” he stared. He realized he was doing a lot of staring that day. He was just thankful the medicine seemed to be working. His ankle wasn’t so painful as it was just a dull throb.
“I don’t think this will come apart easily,” he said, holding up the shirt to show his work. “Ah, but be careful. I haven’t cut off the needle yet.”

Lauri looked from his hands to Yuuri's and back, then shrugged a bit; there was sizeable difference, but he wasn't certain that was the cause. "I work with fine electronics often enough, it should not be a problem." Ah, but I use a magnifying glass then, that could be the difference...or maybe it's just that I care then. Whatever the difference, he no longer had to mend the shirt, and that pleased him. The Finn inspected the sewn hem in a manner that said he was more wary of the needle than worried Yuuri had done a bad job; it was as though he trusted it was completed well. "This is...my normal? If it's too much, eat what you want and leave the rest." Yuuri was small, with bones like a bird. Too thin with no meat to him, perhaps he had an eating disorder? None of Lauri's business, at all. "It is no problem to me, I compost." He settled onto the bed and grabbed the remote and his plate of pierogies, Yuuri had left it but he found inane TV could be useful when eating, so Mythbusters it was...mostly because he liked to watch things being built.

Once the shirt was inspected, Yuuri took it back to finish tying off the thread and snip off the needle, carefully placing everything back in its proper place. It was only once Lauri had settled down and taken his plate of food that the strangeness of being in a stranger’s room began to settle on him again.
Lauri wasn’t a bad person, he reminded himself. At least from what he’d seen so far. He could have left him in the rain, or he could have kicked him out once he finished fixing up his ankle, or countless other things. Yuuri was grateful to his savior, so to speak, and he didn’t want to be rude or make it seem as though he didn’t appreciate everything he was doing. Opening his house, and kitchen, to a stranger.
Even if they had been frozen, the pierogies were good, and Yuuri quietly ate what he could before moving onto the salad. He didn’t feel the need to say anything with the television playing in the background, and Lauri didn’t seem to feel the need to ask him questions that might be uncomfortable for him to answer.
It wasn’t until he realized that swallowed one of the cherry tomatoes too quickly that he should have probably gotten a drink before working on the shirt. He coughed as quietly as he could, hand over his mouth as he carefully set the salad to the side, and wiggled his way over the edge of the bed. Because he refused to ask for Lauri to get him something so simple as a drink when he’d already shown him where they were. This was the first time he tried to walk on his injured leg. He tightened the drawstrings of the pants he was given to wear at least, making sure they didn’t just slip off, and then sort of hopped his way over to the dresser.
“Could I get you anything?” he asked, not looking at Lauri because he knew his face was splotchy and pale from pain and he was out of breath from the effort and looked pathetic, but thought it would be rude not to ask since he was already up.

Either having Yuuri there wasn't weird to Lauri, or he was just better at ignoring it - or perhaps he just truly didn't give a s**t, because he was totally blase about the whole thing. He ate steadily and without comment, not bothering to watch his 'guest' or even look over until Yuuri started choking over part of his meal. Lauri set his plate down, the pierogies gone, reaching for his salad next; Yuuri hopped to the mini fridge and offered to get him a drink. In response, the Finn picked up one of the two beers he'd brought up and cracked it open. "No, thank you." He could have twisted the knife of embarrassment deeper by pointing out that he'd brought a drink for Yuuri as well, but humiliation wasn't on the menu for the little mouse. No, that was Archer's game. The mouse wasn't into such things. Praise was much more his style. To be treated gently, indulged a bit. Yes, that was the best way to handle Yuuri - he could tell that much already.

The sound of Lauri’s drink opening made Yuuri freeze, a flush quickly spreading across his face because he had seen the two drinks, but had forgotten in his semi-coughing fit. So in spite of trying not to look ungrateful for everything Lauri had done for him, he probably looked like a jerk for not accepting what was offered.
He kept his hand mostly over his mouth as he coughed a few more times, and then glanced back to where Lauri seemed to be quite comfortable and was… almost surprisingly… not pointing out Yuuri’s blunder. Was it because he really didn’t care or was he trying to help Yuuri save face?
Giving up on his pointless endeavor to find something to drink (since it was right next to him the whole time), Yuuri carefully pulled himself back up onto the bed, scooting backwards until he was situated once again against the pillow, and his injured leg comfortable. He blamed his nervousness, as he always did, and unfamiliarity of everything.
"You have a beautiful accent," he said as he somewhat awkwardly took the second beer left for him to open, speaking only when a commercial was on because he didn’t want to interrupt. "You said you’re Finnish, right?" Yuuri asked, hoping he’d heard him correctly because his accent sounded so similar to, well… a couple other people he knew. What were the chances he would meet three people from Finland in the same city?
"I only know one thing in Finnish. It’s kind of silly," he explained, hesitating on whether he wanted to share or not, wondering if Lauri would be insulted for whatever reason. He paused for a moment longer and then said, "Tyhmä koira," making sure to stress the first syllable, but quickly cleared his throat as if to change the subject. "The ‘r’ is a little difficult," he mumbled and then sipped some more of his drink.

When Yuuri glanced back, Lauri wasn't looking at him, head tilted off in another direction as he took long swallows from his beer from the can. It was a very pointed, calculated thing, not making eye contact, but somehow perhaps also nonchalant because there was no part of the Finn's attitude that said he meant to be doing anything but enjoying his meal and drinking his beer. After all, if Yuuri hadn't wanted beer with dinner, there were cokes in the mini fridge, more beer, harder liquor, and even wheatgrass shots. "Mm." Praise. Heaven help him. But Yuuri was trying to be nice, so Lauri told himself that it wasn't his accent being praised, but Finnish accents in general and that made it easier. "Thanks. Yes. Vantaa, originally." Lauri stabbed a chunk of salad and put it in his mouth so he wouldn't have to speak further, listening as Yuuri mentioned knowing how to say something in Finnish, which actually caught his attention. Did I - Pasi - teach him to say something? I wouldn't remember, but it wasn't in the notes. How thorough were the notes? Certainly not down to recorded conversations...it's possible... An encouraging but noncommittal sound was made, in case one was necessary. Then more beer. He was not prepared. 'Tyhmä koira' Came almost perfectly from Yuuri's lips, the r just not quite rolled properly. Certainly without the derision that Lauri employed when he used it to bring Archer to heel. His mind jumped a bit - where would Yuuri have picked that phrase up, it wasn't wholly uncommon but. But. There weren't many Finnish-speakers in Destiny City. In fact, he was the only one he knew. And he had definitely not taught Yuuri his pet name for Wolfeite. The only dark haired mouse he had introduced that phrase to often enough to consider it 'teaching' was Kamacite...which meant...that Yuuri...was Kamacite. And now that he knew, the glamour scales fell and it was like a slap in the face - as it always was. <******** glamour magic. The question now was whether or not he told Yuuri he was Aue. There were factors to not do that, namely Yuuri's tendency to freak out, his current injury, and the fact that Lauri didn't want to cause him further damage. Granted, not telling him when he knew could also be damaging, but...he made his choice: Yuuri would be told when he was well and could escape without harming himself if he wished. "Very nicely done." Lauri cleared his throat, amused, "Did whomever taught that to you also teach you what that phrase means, Yuuri?"

The fact that Lauri hadn’t laughed at him or told him he was stupid for attempting to speak even a little of what Yuuri heard was the most difficult language to learn (at least for a lot of people), was quite encouraging. He straightened a little as he sipped at the beer that Lauri had brought up for him, trying not to be stupid and blush over a little bit of praise, because that was embarrassing.
“Thank you,” he tried not to preen about it too much, mumbling and staring down at his injured foot instead, the smallest hint of a smile tugging at the corner of his lips. “I -” he paused, suddenly realizing that he didn’t actually know the exact meaning for it, just that Aue called their General that when he wasn’t, well… ‘when he has not done something important’ or something like that.
The hint of a smile faded almost as quickly as it appeared, replaced with the general nervousness Yuuri figured he was already known for. Maybe it was rude to say? He shouldn’t have been so casual about it. He knew better than to just say random things in other languages without fully understanding.
“Not quite,” he mumbled quietly, shifting a little uncomfortably. “I’m sorry. Should I not say it?”

Lauri watched, waited; he wondered if Yuuri was trying to remember what he had said as Aue. Likely it had been only somewhat truthful - not quite the real meaning, as the Finn was generally inclined to not shame his General. That was part of their agreement, after all. In uniform, in front of others - he would be obedient and obeisant, give Wolfeite his complete due as commanding officer. Any other time? The Wolfe was his plaything, regardless of what form he held. "It's nothing vulgar, don't worry." Was telling Yuuri what the phrase meant count as breaking the letter of his agreement with the Wolfe? Possibly, which didn't sit well, but then...they had never gone over terms, it was simply that he happened to be observant and intelligent and knew when to push and when to hold back. " Koira is dog. Tyhmä," He rolled it properly, lovingly, "Means stupid." With the barest hint of teeth under slightly curving lip, "Did the one that taught you have a pet?"

Something changed.
Yuuri wasn’t sure what, but the atmosphere felt different. The way Lauri was speaking to him felt different. Nothing he could quite place his finger on, but whatever caused the subtle shift could be felt. Something knowing in Lauri’s eyes maybe? No, there was nothing Yuuri said that would cause that reaction. Right? Was it because of his attempt to speak Finnish, even just a silly little phrase?
Out of habit, Yuuri’s free hand lifted to press over his heart, fingers digging into the fabric of the borrowed shirt as he stared at Lauri, the beat growing faster under his palm.
So the phrase meant ‘stupid dog’ essentially, and Yuuri wasn’t quite sure how to react to that knowledge. He felt like he should be offended for Wolfeite, because that was his and Aue’s commanding officer, and Aue probably shouldn’t be calling their General a stupid dog. Although… Wolfeite hadn’t bothered to mention even his name, or a lot of other things… so he supposed he appreciated the fact that Aue felt irritation for what he went through.
But it was the question that had Yuuri flushing darkly, his heart rate picking up speed despite trying to will it to remain calm. There was no reason for him to start feeling this way. There was no reason for anxiety to blossom like it was over just a simple question.
Although, was that just a small smile of amusement? Or a sneer?
“Not quite,” Yuuri mumbled again, his reluctance for an outright denial making his face darken more. Wolfeite wasn’t a pet, but he couldn’t exactly tell Lauri that the man he learned the phrase from meant it for their Negaverse General.
There was another sudden thought that fell over him; what if Lauri was White Moon? What were the chances that he was sitting on the bed that belonged to a knight or senshi? That wasn’t possible, right? His mind was just jumping to conclusions about things just because he suddenly started to feel anxious and out of place for no good reason.
Should he excuse himself? Maybe say his stomach was bothering him and he needed some time alone? That wouldn’t be too weird, right?
