She blinked a little at his comment, and gave him a slight smile, wishing she believed it about herself, but glad her friend didn't think she was ugly. She was about to respond to his comment on his hair products, when his cursing started. "Ah! Yes, let's get you inside before you freeze your balls off, so to speak." She began to run, heading straight for the door. It was clear her earlier comments about jogging regularly were true, because she definitely knew how to run right.

When she got to the door, she yanked it open, and held it wide for him, standing to let him pass through first.

Rhys followed her lead and hurried inside the building once she held the door open for him. He threw his hood off and his hair flopped about as soon as it was free, though now it was slightly damp from the bit of rain that they just ran through. The brunette shook his head about to get some of the water out, much the same way a dog did when its fur got wet, and it only caused his hair to get a bit puffier.

"Think I'm good. So those pancakes?"

She darted in right after him, and pulled the door shut behind her. "I swear to gods. I like the rain, I never saw enough at home, but if this doesn't end soon, I think the island ITSELF will melt." She glowered at the door, then shook her head, and stalked over to a coat hook, and hung her jacket to dry

"Yeah, gimme a minute. I need to put my hair UP, unless you want haircakes." She popped her hair out of it's usual tail, so the long, glorious length was free, and put the tie she used between her teeth. She pulled her hair back and began to twist it and twist it, until it became a bun. It was both faster then one might expect, given the incredible amount of hair, and also much smaller in size. She then tied it off, before heading into the kitchen to find ingredients. It took her a while to gather everything, then she glanced at Rhys. "If I toss the ingredients for the sauce in a bowl, can I ask you to just stir 'em up?"

The young woman was chopping up some milder peppers as she spoke, other ingredients arranged around her in a less then obvious fashion, but one she had been very determined about.

Rhys dropped his coat off to dry as well and took up some space along one wall, far from most of the kitchen stuff. Still, when she asked for just that much help he nodded and moved to stand a little bit closer so he could see what she was doing. Not that he'd be able to do what she was doing now in the future, but it was pretty cool to see someone who knew how to cook in action. He kept himself from asking about what each ingredient was about and instead just sort of leaned on the table and stared.

"They put you on kitchen duty yet?" he asked, just then remembering the last time he was in this kitchen. "I peeled I don't even know how many potatoes on my last kitchen duty. Boring as all ********' hell, but I was just peelin' s**t. This looks like it's more fun."

She grabbed a bowl, and tossed in a number of ingredients, including the peppers she had just minced up, before adding a spoon to the bowl, and sliding it to him. "Don't let any of that get in your eyes or on any open cuts. It WILL hurt."

She then moved onto chopping green onions up into longish thin slices, her eyes focused on her work, her hands moving quickly. "Me? Not yet. Didn't know that was one of the roster of chores, though it doesn't really surprise me. And I'm not surprised it was boring. Potato peeling is just mind numbing, even if it's just one. I can't imagine the number it would take here. I hope if I do, it'll be to do actual cooking, because yeah... This is way more fun, and I like making things to make people happier. Maybe I'll bake cookies sometime." She pushed the onions aside, and in another bowl, began adding in flour, water, and other ingredients he might not recognize, then blending it up. After it was properly mixed, she moved the bowl and the plate of onions over to the stove, and began the process of prepping the fry pan. "I'm guessing no one ever taught you how to cook?"

He looked down at the ingredients in the bowl she slid over to him for a second, and when he saw the peppers he didn't doubt that it would suck to get it in his eye. He didn't have any open cuts so that was the only real threat at the moment. He mixed it slowly, almost absently because he was listening to her for the most part. "Cookies sound pretty good. Bet they have everything you need here, too. For a mysterious island or wherever the hell we actually are, the kitchen's pretty well stocked."

If they had money to pay them, though, then it was obvious they'd have money to provide groceries and stuff. It just surprised him, is all.

Rhys went from watching the bowl of things he was mixing to watching Seren, then back again a couple of times until he felt it was probably mixed it up and walked over to where she was at. "Here," he said as he handed the bowl. "And nah, I had a junkie for a foster mom. I can do basic s**t like fry eggs or cook rice or whatever. You know, just enough to get by, but this." He shook his head slightly. "No idea."

She smiled happily at the idea that she could do some baking, and responded absently, in a way that said she was so focused on what she was doing, her Brain to Mouth Filter was not exactly at 100%. "Excellent. Baking is one of the one things I didn't get to do enough of... Didn't have access to a proper oven most of the time, especially after they boarded up the door to the main house..." She tossed the green onions into the heated frying oil, and then poured a dollop of the batter over them. While it started to cook, she grabbed a plate and some paper towels, and set them up next to her.

She looked up at his comment about his foster mom, and gave him a sympathetic look. "I'm sorry to hear it. If you ever wanna learn anything about cooking, I'll be happy to teach you. I know a fair amount about... well at least basic cookery." After a minute, she flipped the pancake, which was a nice golden brown with darker brown edges, a grin on her face. "Ah! Good sign, the first one wasn't a butt and didn't fall apart on me... Got the thickness just right..."

Rhys watched her work in mostly silence, his need for food becoming more and more obvious when the aroma of the pancake started to fill the room. He took a deep breath and let it out slowly as he watched and listened and sort of just...his mind kind of floated to that point where he really, really just needed something to eat. Luckily her offer to teach him to cook brought him back somewhat.

"Might actually take you up on that, thanks." He shot her a smile but his eyes quickly went to the pancake that looked pretty ******** delicious even though he knew it was only half-cooked so far. "First lesson should be these pancakes. The prep work didn't seem too insane. Just a lot of chopping?"

After a minute she pulled the pancake out, and popped it onto the towels to drain, and set the next one to frying. His acceptance of her offer made her feel a little better about his helping her with gym training... She could do something, in turn, for him.

When he asked about the pancakes first, she wrinkled her nose a little, thoughtfully. "Yeah I can do that, though you'll need to give me a little time? This recipe is one I learned years ago, and I mostly eye measure the ingredients, so I'll have to do a batch or two were I eye measure, then measure what I've... measured out... And that sentence just sounds weird but at the same time it's correct. Mneh. But yeah, I can totally do that. Let me know the kinds of things you'd most want to learn about cooking, and if it's something I know, I'll teach you." She sighed, just a little, and added "Keep in mind that I am limited, to a degree, on more complex stuff involving ovens or full set of stove burners. Just as I was hitting my stride, I lost access to more then a microwave and an electric burner."

"Works for me. And actually I just wanna stick to the easy stuff. Anything that takes less than five ingredients and just a frying pan or something, I'd be happy with that."

The almost-ready pancake was calling to him, so while Seren was busy with the other pancake and wasn't paying him too much attention he tried to sneak a little piece off of it. He got a little burnt from the effort, made evident by his suddenly swearing and sucking on his thumb and forefinger. "Why is it still ********' hot?" he asked indignantly, glowering at the offending pancake. It smelled so good though...

"Well the sauce takes six, but the pancake itself is exactly five, so you should be fine." She nodded, as she watched the current pancake, while dividing the rest of the cut onions into sets for pancakes.

When he started swearing, she glanced over, and saw what he was doing. She shook her head, and laughed at him, in a gentle way. "Serves you right for trying to snag it without waiting patiently." She shook her head, then added "Run your fingers under some cold water it'll help prevent burning. And it takes a few minutes to cool off enough to eat. Frying gets stuff PRETTY hot, and the oils in it seem to hold the heat." She flipped the next pancake, and added "When it IS cool enough, though, I'll tell you, and it's all yours. I suggest trying it on it's own first, then in the dipping sauce."

He scowled at the pancakes and at the idea of having to wait before going to run the cold water over his fingers. It helped some, and when he got back to where he'd been standing earlier he just sighed. "Fine."

The pancakes were all gonna be his anyway, at least that's what she said, so if it meant he had to wait five or ten minutes...he could wait. He'd been waiting to eat for days already, so a few more minutes wasn't gonna make a whole lot of difference.

"Good. I'd hate you to get hurt. Fried food burns are nasty things." She refocused on the pancakes, and soon there was a small stack of them on the plate, and she picked up a plate. "The bottom ones are cool enough, so I'll separate 'em out and you can start there." She popped them on the plate, and put the sauce with them, and handed it over, before going to the fridge and getting herself a glass of milk.

"The rest will be ready soon. Go on, have a seat, and give it a try." She turned back to watch him eat. It had been so long since anyone had eaten food she'd made, other then herself.
PostPosted: Tue Aug 29, 2017 11:26 pm

Thankfully the wait seemed really, really worth it. As the stack grew Rhys found himself getting just a bit more patient with each added pancake, if only because it meant he had that one extra pancake to munch on now. Still, when she handed him a plate he couldn't really hold himself back anymore. He grabbed a fork and dug in, slicing through the stack like it was a stack of breakfast pancakes he was used to eating and shoveling one huge bite of the stuff. Like she suggested he tried it first without the sauce, which was amazing. He gave her a thumbs up to tell her as much, then went for his second bite, this time with the sauce.

Even. Better.

"You've been holding out on me, Seren," he said when he finally took a breath from gorging on the pancakes. "These things are ********' awesome."

She was watching him as she drank her milk. She brought the others over, and found herself amused as to how he ate them, but didn't bother to correct him. As long as he enjoyed it, that was all that mattered.

There was a moment, or two, when watching him eat caused her heart to ache, remembering feeding her little brother, back when her parents still trusted her. She had to look down, trying to control the urge to cry, and in fact, when he spoke to her, she was having a moment like that. She took a deep breath, and steadied herself, then looked back up at him with a smile.

"Glad you like them. And hey... You never asked if I could cook, or would." Her head tilted, and a brow just arched at him. "Besides, I don't just volunteer to cook for anyone, generally. I either have to consider them a friend, or I have to be so stressed out I'm cooking to cook, and whoever is there gets to be the recipient. Be glad I consider you a friend."
