He fished around the haystack for a while until he felt something, so he grabbed it and pulled it out to show the gnomes. As soon as they saw it they paused their argument and started yelling at him all of the sudden, so without a second thought he threw the key back into the stack and started walking away. He could live without the coin they would give him if it meant not having to deal with all the yelling.
