"Hm."
That was one of many rubs: maybe Gale wouldn't adjust well. Maybe neither of them would, for their own reasons.
Stormy tilted her head. "And that's that?" she asked, still soft. "Nevermind other friends, other duties, if it's with me?"
Because one thing was starting to make itself clear: she didn't have the same strong ties. The things that might have bound her had changed, disappeared, died, or never been. Noemi, distant; Evan and Tucker, gone; Nevada, departed; Ami, cold as ever; even Lex was no longer who he had been, and his amnesia was bittersweet. It was something that had troubled Stormy for a long time, long enough that someone like Gale could hear the unspoken question.
Why bother when they always left?

despacito
She answered like it was a compulsion. "Bright for a moment," Stormy said, fragile and small, "and then gone. That's a-all I am, Gale." Maybe she hadn't known it in whole when Gale had first called her that, but it felt apt. Prophetic, even.

The more Gale trailed off, the more the noise wanted to come out, until eventually something like a chuckle died in her throat. It was all just so...stupid, wasn't it? Like something as small as a cigarette would ever make as big an impact as it normally could now. Like alcohol was any worse than it was to begin with. She didn't know why she had bothered bringing it up at all.
"Nevermind," Stormy said abruptly, turning back to her food. "I'm worrying you, but it's not a big deal. I'll figure something out."
