"Yes, very probably. People lump everything they don't understand into one big pile and try to disregard all of it. I have a lot of things I think are silly but the magical power of the world itself no. It's why this place is so offensive to me, one big artificial nightmare that flies in the face of all the tenets of belief. One of the most fundamental things I hold true is the threefold law. If you do good or evil it will be returned to you three times. This place should be a crater and probably will be soon enough, if it's real."
He sighed. "Which is why we need to get out of here. You should read up on it though, it's something that just resonated with me."
"And Roswell... well. He sort of rides. He is a bit scared of it and rides the most bombproof horses I have but still, he does it and I appreciate it. I appreciate anyone who tries even when they might not be comfortable with it."
He placed down the beaker and held the bucket up to fill. "Lets get that floor now, we've got this solved."

"That is an awful lot of generalization for people, then," said Merric, frowning. "Understanding is the basis of everything in this world, and if one doesn't try to understand, then they'll just coast through without actually getting very far, I think."
He did agree by the threefold law, apparently, though. And the need to get out of here. "I like that, I think. Everything returned tenfold, right? Or threefold, I should say," Merric amended.
It was a little hard to think of Roswell afraid of anything, if Merric was being honest, but he kept that comment to himself, reaching to help Lysander lift the bucket into the sink. "It would be nice, I think, to just...ride, maybe," he said, after a moment, turning the faucet on. "To not have to worry about anything else except just...riding. And the horse."
A pause.
"And maybe not dying," he added, with a small laugh.

'Exactly, understanding is very important, communication and understanding are what make the world go around." Also both things were excellent for meaning he didn't have to do more work than he needed to. Violence didn't solve anything because violence took effort.
"Not dying is a good thing to think about when you are on the back of a horse. If there's one thing that's really uniformly true about all horses its that they can randomly accidentally or deliberately kill you. I've broken all sorts of bones and taken all sorts of falls. You get used to it eventually.. sort of. I got kicked once, right in the thigh, it went all sorts of colours."
He winced at the memory.
"But the slow and steady ones are fine, it's getting them to do anything over a trot that's the real trick."
"Ready, set, go!" he said as he eagerly tipped the large bucket all over the floor, watching with a childish delight as it spread across the surface and in the direction of the door.

"Hence why I believe I get along with you and Roswell as well as I do," said Merric, smiling over at Lysander. "Communication and understanding, or at least, an attempt for both, I should say. It can be difficult, but it's not impossible to communicate well among people."
He let his fingers rest briefly underneath the stream of water, just watching the way it skated over his skin, Merric frowning slightly. "I would imagine that getting kicked by a horse is a dangerous thing, or just being on them, they are pretty enormous. But beautiful," he added, because this was true too. "I remember as a child learning about animals, I always enjoyed Clysdales because they had the big..." He made a wavy hand gesture with his fingers, "poofy things on their hooves."
He gripped the edge of the bucket and, with Lysander's help, tipped it over, the water cascading all across the lab floor. It was really very impressive, Merric thought, and saved one the trouble of mopping for hours on end. He put a hand to his hip, smiling.
"That was an excellent idea. I think that went very well."

"Some people only want to listen to what they want to hear. People like that are the worst to deal with."
"Feather." He offered helpfully. "It's called hoof feathering. And I love it too. My family had an irish cob who had the most fabulous mane and feathering. We used to use her for guests to ride. I mostly rode Hanoverian warmbloods, they have a lot less glam, they are all business. Every horse can be dangerous though. Not that it seems to be a problem we need to worry about right now with these strange shields."
Either that or they were simply protected within whatever simulation this was.
"Yes!" he said in regards to the water. "Perfect. Maybe a few more, two or three and I'd say we were done and could clock out early."
Even as he spoke he was reaching for the bucket again.

He knew the truth of that statement only too well. Merric gave a nod, exhaling a breath that was almost a sigh, but not quite, trying to focus on the good things, rather than letting his mind wander yet again. Besides, horses were a much more interesting and engaging talk.
He brightened considerably at the horses. "I don't know what either of those look like," Merric admitted with a laugh. "But I'm sure there's somewhere here I could look them up, or maybe whenever we get out of here, you could show me them. I think I would prefer a calmer, more straightforward horse."
He reached for the bucket as well, hoisting it up back into the sink, the faucet still running.
"The shields are confusing to me; they seem to protect us from some things, but not all? I don't really understand it," said Merric, as the water level slowly began to rise. He liked the idea of being able to get out of here earlier; cleaning was neither of their strong suits, but they'd managed to streamline the process anyway, which was pretty impressive, he thought.

Lysander nodded. "I'd love to show you one day. Nothing made me happier than sharing my horses. It was like introducing friends to my other friends. I could find you your match in a horse."
Another tip of the bucket. "I've tried not to test the shield thing, though in the desert there were a lot of things that should have killed me but they didn't. I don't want to know where its effectiveness ends. I'm not a fighter, never really was one."
He watched the water slosh satisfyingly. "Probably just the one more and we are done and can ditch this place."

Hearing how enthusiastic Lysander was about his horses made Merric privately wonder if there was anything at all that he himself was that enthusiastic over. He supposed pandas could count, but he wasn't really as vocal about his adoration of the creatures as Lysander was. Animals, perhaps, or sciences in general, but it still seemed not quite as much.
Perhaps he was overthinking it.
"I'm not a fighter, either," Merric said, wrinkling his nose as he took an instinctive step back to avoid getting too much of the water on his shoes. "I mean, I suppose I did all right with my hammer...thing...out there in the desert, but it was not very easily done. It didn't really feel comfortable at all."
