"I like the idea of the finality of it. Of nature leading to destruction." He thought of the other him in the book with that beast of fire destroying all.
"What do you care? Do you think the people here care about you? You aren't romantically involved with anyone so you'd be a second class save if s**t hit the fan. Has anyone reached out to you to see if you were okay when living with Lawr or taken energy to invest knowing you or your problems? What you are struggling with every day? What you might need advice on or any guidance? Lawr kept you as a trinket, you do know that at least? Face it. People are selfish garbage."
He watched her dangle her shoe.

Melody flexed her toes, causing the shoe to clip back to her heel and stick a moment.
"I thought you did. Once upon a time. But no, I don't think everyone - including you and Lawr - Or myself - should just die because of it."
"Romance has nothing to do with anything," she pointed out before pulling her toes back, swinging the shoe away from her foot again.
"Do you really want everyone to die?"

He pulled his eyes away from her and went back to tapping the screen of his tablet. "I don't want anyone to die, but the fantasy to see it happen at least feels like a change to the miserable state of this island. If I had to die, if it was that way with no single person to blame but some careless act of nature, at least I would have company."
He typed a few notes down. "What keeps you going, Melody?"

Melody looked mortified by his answer. It just wasn't okay. Everyone had their own lives, their own stories, their own destinies. She was only just starting out still, she felt, it wasn't fair to expect herself to be part of any one's specific story yet. "The fact that things will get better." She said in earnest. Because life wasn't just horrible s**t. There was more to it than that. There always was and always will be - as long as you lived - that opportunity. Dying reduced that chance to none. Obviously. So she wasn't interested in it.
"You need help," she finally pointed out, unhelpfully as she started to shake her leg a little, causing the shoe to swing back and forth more quickly.

"Do I? And what help would I get here on an island of lunatics ran by psychopaths? To everyone who justifies their own views as the almighty norm on a island where your reality constantly is called into question. No. I was helped once by a fellow hunter and I'm the result now of it. I'd be wary of a hunter offering to help fix you."
"Life can get far worse then better.

"Then go off island if your trust issues are so skewed against hunters now? It can get worse but it also gets better. Just learn and try again." Her foot finally stopped as her shoe suddenly flipped off her toes and onto the floor.
"If you end it, you're guaranteeing that your life wont ever get better. That's all."
She leaned over to grab her shoe.
"I trusted you once upon a time. Would you have taken advantage of that?"
She gently dusted the shoe off on the side of her chair and once it looked new again, slipped it back on her foot.

"Are you asking if I would have missed with you intimately?" He asked.
"Would you have asked me like Mik asked me?"

"No on the second question." she answered with a confused look, thinking perhaps he missed entirely what she was driving at.

"I'm not following what you're asking? In what way do you mean taken advantage?" He didn't bother looking at her but took off his glasses to rub his eyes and move them atop his head.

"I mean exactly that, taken advantage of in any way shape or form. You say everyone does, but would you have?"

"Probably. I do plenty of things in the moment and wind up seeing the fault in it till much later. I could even do something I thought was good for you and wind up making it a million times worse."
He glanced up a moment. "But I wouldn't have forced myself upon you. I would have asked for consent if I even felt inclined in the slightest to be with you."
He went back to his tablet. "But you are no Rin."

"St-still," She was taken back a bit by that Rin comment. Feeling insulted but also saddened by the comment. She was well aware Rin was dead, but the effect on him seems to be infinite. But she didn't like being compared to her either. "I know I'm not Rin," she answered irritably. "My point is you don't seek to take advantage of people. So maybe other people don't either. So just stop acting like they all do? That's all." Why did he have to make things so difficult?

"If we are in the mood for giving advice, I counter with that it's more sensible that, based on experience, to assume that people will taken advantage of you by default. That it is better to be aware and cautious than to just assume they aren't out there to screw you over for personal gain. That's all." He replied.
"Does this look like a fish?" He asked, holding up the tablet of what showed MS paint and a very bad picture of a fish.

"It looks like a squiggle," she answered purely to be contrary.
"So then, I'm out to take advantage of you?" she dragged the conversation back again.

He turned it over and held it out, staring at it. "Hmm. I suppose drawing isn't for me then. Shame to be the only one that isn't an artist in the house."
He set it back down and started to work on something else. "Probably." He answered.
