He whipped around, blue eyes beaming from his slipping glasses. "I read sci-fi too!"He had to hold back the volume a bit but couldn't help the sudden jump start to the conversation. "What do you like best about it? What kind do you read? I really like space exploration and technology and meeting other species while it still being about humans. Do you watch Star Trek?"

"I like, like, aliens and other worlds and stuff. Like how aliens are different from humans but still, like, people, you know? And how people survive on other planets, because that's just cool. I like Star Trek, I, um, I watched Next Generation with my dad a lot," he said, and there was a moment of melancholy, but he went on, refusing to let it stop the conversation. "Do you like Enterprise?"

"Yeah!" The teen practically beamed with interest as he turned fully to Jordan. "Next Gen is the best. I watched the older stuff too but the newer stuff is so much better. I really like all the characters and places and the ship. It's great when anyone can just go in a ship and go anywhere old or new and no matter how bizarre people just get it and accept it as a possibility because of how many things are possible. You could say you ...uh.....saw stuff and then everyone would get their scanners and discover it all serious. They wouldn't think you are crazy but know something is up. Just so much to explore and find out."
"I like the movies Aliens too. That even when some aliens are like people and smart and talk English like Star Trek, there are still some who could eat your face and just want to conquer and you have to fight them. That you have to protect your planet and sacrifice everything."

"I kind of like the older stuff too, it's stupid sometimes but it's funny. Do you think the scanners could detect, um. The shadow things?" Jordan asked. There was a little hesitation in his voice; he wasn't used to openly talking about the things he saw. He'd learned not to say anything to adults fairly fast, and he'd only talked about it with Andy just enough to confirm that his brother also saw things, and had otherwise avoided the topic.
"Yeah," he agreed. "The ones where there have to be heroes to fight the evil aliens, that's fun too. Did you see Signs? That one was pretty cool. I mean, it wasn't in space but it was still cool."

He went quiet at the question of shadows. "Yeah....I see em. Did...did you meet Her?" His voice was hushed as he looked intensely at him.

Jordan quieted and poked at his chip bag to make it crinkle, uncertain if they should be talking about this. "Who's she? I, um, I see things sometimes. There's something under Andy's bed some nights ... "

"I see them too. In attics. In alleys. In the dark." He sat back and curled his knees up before unzipping his hoodie and pulling the hood down further.
"I met Her in a old house. She did this.I see them now." On his neck was a swirling red wound that flowered out into curls at the ends.
"Are you infected too?"

It was a relief to know that there was someone else who saw them besides himself and Andy. The injury was fascinating, in a weird way, but he made himself not stare too long. It wasn't polite. "I don't think I met her. I always saw them. Ever since I was really little," he said. "Does that mean I'm infected?"
"My dad got really mad if I talked about them," he added, softly. "So I just didn't."

"I don't know now. I haven't meant anyone else who saw em." He pulled the hoodie back up but left it unzipped due to how warm it was here.
"I was told I was seeing things that weren't there. It's why I was given therapy. It's why I'm on medication. Did they do that to you?"

"Andy saw them too. So I knew I wasn't totally crazy," Jordan offered.
He nodded a little. "I didn't get pills though," he said. "When I figured out they didn't believe me I let them tell me I was imagining things and not really seeing them. I didn't talk about it a lot so I think they decided I learned my lesson." He poked a toe at the blanket, watching it wrinkle up. "I told Andy he shouldn't tell anyone what he saw so he wouldn't have to go to the shrinks too."

He placed his chin on his knees as he sat there. "None of my siblings see em. Sophie has tried and Chris thinks I'm nuts. I stopped talking about it too, but I have attacks sometimes. Just...then popping up somewhere. I can't help but freak out. I had to stop playing street hockey at night now. My friends kinda.....just stopped with everything for a while. They know and don't want to deal with me most of the time." He said, looking away.
"They wouldn't be talking if they had fallen through the floor in that house with me. Then they would have met Her and I wouldn't have to deal with it."

"I don't like to go out at night, there's too much chance of seeing one. But if I don't get close to them they usually don't follow me." Jordan sighed. "My friends think I'm a chicken but that's okay. I don't mind." He did mind, but it was better than them thinking he was crazy. He didn't say that; he wasn't going to say it when that was what Mel was dealing with.
"That must've been bad," he said sympathetically. He could imagine having to be trapped in the dark with one of the shadows. That was different than the thing under the bed; the thing under the bed seemed to have rules about what it could do, and leaving the room kept you mostly safe.

The square of light coming from the opening of the lookout continues to travel lower and lower as the sun started to sink below the treeline.
"My friends think I'm crazy. We grew up together, and now they just get upset with me. I get it. I just ruin things, and they think I'm lying. I'm just that weird kid they know now. So I do that too. Don't talk about it. Just have to be quiet even if those things are right there in the room with me, and everyone is fine when I'm not."
He turned his head down to hide behind his tucked in legs. "Maybe it's better for 'em that I'm here."

"I don't like having to lie about it," Jordan confessed. The growing dimness of the treehouse made it easier to talk about this kind of thing. "It's real and pretending it's not just makes me feel like. Like maybe I'm not very real either."
"I know you're not crazy," he said, and reached out hesitantly to pat Melvin's shoulder, a feather-light touch, there and then gone. "It is real."

"I don't like people calling me a liar when what I see is real. Like I want the attention. Like I enjoy it and causing everyone to worry or hate me. I have to lie to make other people happy and not be happy. Or that my parents have to pay for therapy and medicine that don't work and I don't want. It makes me tired making everyone think its fine because they would hate it more if I wasn't."
The touch was brief but he tensed and stared at Jordan with shock and concern. "Don't. You'll get unfected."
Standing, he got a first aid kit from their pack and handed it to him. "No one should touch me."
