"My weapon." said Mikael and he was about to go into much greater detail about how great his weapon was when Carl lead them ever on.

"H...HEY." he yelled, and ran back down the stairs after the other boy, suddenly more than a little spooked by the whole situation.

Carl poked his head from behind a wall, proving that there was a narrow opening the other direction. There was a side of the wall that had no weapons tablets on it, simply just a smooth surface. "What- what do you think is here?"

He had totally read enough spy books to understand secret corridor, and in true secret corridor fashion, put both hands on the way to try and find a secret door switch-

- And fell right through the wall. The wall which was for all intents and purposes, still solid when Mikael tried to touch it.

Mikael moved closer. "Oooh wow. A secret place!" he said, eyes lighting up with fascination. "Just like in the books. Kings had secret passages and other super neat things." He felt like suddenly he was in one of his fun little role plays with his king and his castles of sand.

"I bet there's treasure." he said, radiating eagerness.

When Carl fell into the wall it was not what he expected, trying to follow him and hitting nothing but stone. "What?" he said. "How did you do that?!"

There was muffled yelling on the other side of the wall and then the sound of someone knocking against it and what sounded a lot like -"Let me out!"

And it was around that time that a single red butterfly flew in and landed on one of the tablets next to Mik-

- And then a second, and a third, and a fourth.

Mikael hurriedly knocked back on the wall. "I can't get it to open!" he yelled urgently. "It went all solid and hard once you went through it!" He didn't even notice the butterflies right away, too focused on trying to free Carl, seeking with his fingers across the unyeilding stone in search of some kind of switch or seam.

He finally caught the red in his peripheral vision and hesitated.

"There are butterflies here." he said quietly.

"You did this," said Carl's voice, surprisingly clear as if coming from directly beside Mik, "You nearly killed me-"

"-And you'd do it again," the voice of the Mist Hunter who had called Mik family in a frenzy of red-

- "And AGAIN", a female voice, loud, clear, unfamiliar yet unmistakable.

Mik let out a squeak of terror at the voice and shook his head.

"NO" he said "No I wouldn't! I wouldn't hurt anyone! I don't want to hurt people. I'm GOOD."

'Prove it', whispered the butterflies, and they echoed in the cave again and again and again, 'Prove that YOU'RE GOOD.'

Instantly he drowned in his own memories. The first was the most basic. A memory surrounded by the anger of others, lashing out against Mik. The second was a memory of his own anger, perhaps just a pale imitation of what he had only seen. And the last- the last was the most recent. It wasn't anger or hatred it was simply the unstoppable hunger of when the butterflies, the red had overtaken him.

The memories came easily to him, focused most of the times when he'd managed to enrage his father, flashing back to the time when he'd pushed him in irritation and broken his arm, forcing him to say he fell while running around when he shouldn't have been instead. There had been so much anger in his life, a cold callous sort of irritation. His own anger was learned and he remembered the time he'd lost his temper with Horace, determined to really really hurt him for revenge. The memory of the red was the worst, that dizzying sensation of loss of control terrifying him.

"I can't." Mik said, teetering on the brink of tears. "I can't prove it."

And then it was the voice of someone Mik would consider even remotely close to a mother cooing and taunting him in the same breath. "You don't have to prove anything," he could almost feel a ghost hand brushing against his cheeks, feel her breath and her eyes and her encouraging smile.

"I always know."

Laughter, and then silence. The butterflies were gone.

"That's strange," Carl said suddenly, right behind Mik, "It just let me out." He suddenly tensed up, and looked at Mikael warily, backing up several steps. "You're not- you're not sick are you?"

Mik closed his eyes in the moment, longing so much for family and his mother back, longing for everything to be as it had been so much that he would believe anything. He was good, he'd be good, he was trying so hard.

Carl got a startled look. "N..no?" he said. "I ss..saw some butterflies but I'm all right now. I won't hurt you. It's dangerous around here."

He glanced at Mik one more time without saying anything else and then turned back towards the wall, circling it without getting too close. "You're familiar with this place right?"

Carl never got to finish his train of thought as a moment later another Hunter showed up, their sihouette outlining the cove entrance. "Hey! Hey you're not scheduled to be in here."

They stepped into the cove, their glaive weapon drawn, scraping loudly against the cove floor as underneath their flared coat hood their eyes were burning a bright red. "Trainees need to be taught a lesson.."

Mikael moved a little closer to Carl as the hunter appeared in the doorway.

"Please don't hurt us." he said, but he knew it was hopeless with those bright red eyes. "I'll try and fight them." he said. "But you might have to run." Carl didn't have a weapon which left him as the only option there was, even if he couldn't fight well and didn't really know how.

"Wait, just use the--"

Carl didn't get a chance to finish his sentence as the assailant lunged forward, glaive weapon burning a deep maroon. It managed to slightly chip one of the walls, though the wards in the weapons cove preventing damage to the actual weapon tablets remained strong.

The only consolation was the other was also a trainee, their movements wide and clumsy, weapon just barely glancing off Mik's Fear shield. "You could have accepted me," the trainee whispered madly, deliriously, "you could have BEEN DESTRUCTION."

"Use the what?" Mik said panicked because he just wasn't very smart and hadn't made any connection whatsoever between the dangerous red eyes and anything else.

"I TRIED." he said, ears springing to his eyes again, not sure why he was still so upset he'd failed the madwoman who had taken him captive. "I just don't want to die."

And again he summoned his weapon, knowing in his panic he didn't have much chance at all as a trainee with such a long ranged weapon. "PLEASE DON'T."

And he swung Fen at the guy in a vain attempt to push him back
