Quote: 8: You decide to investigate the victim's work and here, at long last, you get the break you've been waiting for: after about 10 minutes of poking around you run into a non-native animal still wearing scraps of clothing or some of the victim's accessories. You call out to it, and as its attention turns to you, it attacks. Move on to part four. "I don't know but I'm hoping something cute and cuddly that only wants to be snuggled while we feed it the antidote." Misha shot Rob a sideways smile. "But what are the chances, huh?" As if her words woke up whichever god was in charge of horrific irony, a low growl drifted out of the bushes to their right. They turned, suddenly alert, just in time to see what looked like a big shaggy dog, all grey and brown, fling itself forward through the scrub and at them. It snapped and snarled but stopped just before reaching them. Something red was around its neck. Misha squinted. "That... is a t-shirt," she whispered. "s**t. I think we found our boy." The coyote lifted its nose skyward and howled, a chilling sound. Then it sprang towards Rob.

With a surprised yelp, Rob stood, yanking his greatsword out of the scabbard on his back as he did so. The coyote was fast, though, and managed to catch his ankle in its jaws. "Oi, gerroff, you!" Rob yelled angrily and shook it off his leg. His ankle stung from the bite, but the denim of his jeans were enough to keep the beast's teeth from breaking skin. The sudden rush of adrenaline from the attack send Rob's blood boiling. He knew that this coyote was really Joe, the subject of their search, turned by the witch Circe. But damn it if he was going to get torn up by the enchanted teen. Joe growled and lunged at him again, and Rob swung the sword at the coyote. The weapon connected with its shoulder with enough force to knock it off its feet with a yelping whine. Rob really didn't want to hurt him, but after his experience in the bayou, he knew it was the only way to subdue the creature. "Joe!" he shouted to get its attention. "Joe! We're here to help you!" His words didn't seem to sink in, though, as the coyote got to its feet and turned to Misha, its teeth bared in a snarl as it leapt at her. Misha had just enough time to swing her buckler away from her back and around before Joe the Coyote gave up her partner as too-sharp-for-eating and headed for her. She cringed as she felt the animal's weight hit. Stumbling back, she hissed a curse under her breath. Then, louder, she called, "Joe, honey, chill out! We're just here to get you all human again." The coyote snarled. Moving in a tight circle, he forced Misha to walk with him, circling to keep her face to his. Her attention wavered for a moment and he dove towards her. His muzzle came up against her shoulder and his teeth scraped and, without thinking, Misha lashed out with her shield-wielding arm. He bounced off the metal and rolled back to his feet, closer to Rob again. Weapon: Buckler HP: 51/56 Dmg: 4 Monster's HP: 46/60

The coyote got to its feet too close to Rob. He swung, but was unable to bring the big sword around close enough to impact the bewitched teen-in-coyote-form. "s**t!" he swore as the canine snarled and snapped at his ankle again, same ankle it had bitten before. This time one long sharp tooth penetrated Rob's jeans and scraped against his skin, and Rob hissed with pain and fell to his rear on the ground. "Dammit! Joe!" he shouted at the creature. "Come on, Joe, come back to your senses! Your mum misses you!" Scrambling backwards away from the threat, he sat up and brandished the greatsword at the coyote. It growled and crept slowly toward Rob, teeth bared and fur bristling. "Misha, give us a hand here!" Weapon: Greatsword (heavy melee) HP: 40/50 Dmg: 0 Monster's HP: 46/60

"What does it look like I'm doing? My nails?" Nonetheless, Misha crept forward, shield at the ready. Dropping her voice low and sweet, she nearly crooned, "Joe. C'mon, Joe. Stop trying to eat the nice man there and let's get you something much yummier. Like a stinky flower antidote." Distracted from Rob, Joe Coyote turned to look at Misha. He dropped low to the ground and his haunches twitched. Misha bit her lip. "C'mon, sweetie," she whispered. "Don't do... That!" He slammed into her shield again and it banged hard into her shoulder until she grunted with the effort. Misha set her feet and pushed back until Joe Coyote was again pushed into a sprawl away from her. "Dammit, Joe. Stop that!" Weapon: Buckler HP: 46/56 Dmg: 4 Monster's HP: 42/60

This time Rob was ready. He scrambled to his feet as Misha thwapped the Joe Coyote away, ready to swing at the beast with his greatsword. "Come on, Joe," he coaxed grumpily. "Why won't you cooperate?" The coyote seemed to be paying attention to Rob's words, because he turned his head and stared at Rob with yellow eyes. Were they finally getting through to him? Then he growled menacingly and leapt at Rob faster than the Brit could react. Dropping one hand off the hilt of the sword, Rob pinwheeled his free arm as he staggered away from the attack. Joe connected with his jaws around Rob's flailing arm, teeth sinking into flesh. Rob yelped loudly and dropped the sword, and with his fist beat the coyote's muzzle until it let go. Bleeding now, Rob picked up his sword, ready to have another go at Joe Coyote. The animal looked between Rob and Misha, then lunged at Misha. The brunette just barely got her shield up in time but the weight of the attacking beast-boy still staggered her and wrenched her shoulder. Misha made a small whimpering sound in the back of her throat. Then, setting her jaw, she dug her heels in and pushed forward again. Her shield slammed into Joe with a thud. The sound barely masked her shouted French curse. Weapon: Buckler HP: 41/56 Dmg: 8 Monster's HP: 34/60

With a yelp, the coyote retreated again and turned its eyes on Rob. "Come on, Joe!" Rob shouted at the beast. "Come back to us!" The Joe coyote seemed to hesitate a bit -- was it working? Were their words sinking in? Then its lips curled in a snarl and it leapt to attack again.
Rob was ready this time. He swung the greatsword like a cricket bat, trying to catch Joe with the flat of the blade. The creature tried to twist out of the way mid-leap, but it moved in such a way that one of the edges caught it on the side. It howled in pain and dropped to the ground, but not before lashting Rob's arm with one of its paws, the claws leaving gores on Rob's leather jacket.
"Hey!" the Brit scolded. "That's not on, mate!"

"Are you okay? Rob!" Misha risked a glance at her friend but quickly refocused as the coyote threw himself broadside at her. She gasped at the sharp pain that bloomed in her shoulder at the attack. A clumsy swipe with her shield nicked him in return. Barely. Weapon: Buckler HP: 36/56 Dmg: 4 Monster's HP: 20/60

"I'm fine, but me jacket's a big more ragged now," Rob called back. The momentary distraction was enough so that when the Joe coyote deflected off of Misha's shield, Rob wasn't ready for him. The coyote wrapped its mouth around Rob's leather-clad arm, and the man yelped and dropped his sword. "Gerroff, you!" he shouted, pushing against the monster's muzzle as it dug its teeth in. "C'mon, Joe, let go!" Weapon: Greatsword (heavy melee) HP: 25/50 Dmg: 0 Monster's HP: 20/60

"Please, Joe! Your mom is so worried!" Misha took a swat at the coyote's backend with her shield. He yelped and rounded on her with wild eyes. She swallowed and backed up. "Pretty please? Just come home with us," she whispered. Joe seemed to think about it for a few heartbeats. Then he shook his head and threw himself at her. Misha screamed and overbalanced, landing on her butt. She cursed in low, angry French as she battered at Joe to keep him from sinking his teeth into her. Weapon: Buckler HP: 31/56 Dmg: 2 Monster's HP: 18/60

Rob saw Misha go down, saw the coyote that was really Joe going after her like he meant it, and panicked slightly. All Misha had was her shield, and a small shield at that. He charged over to her and, wielding his greatsword like a cricket bat, swung at Joe. "Gerroff her, Joe! What do you think you are doing? Come on, kid, listen to us!" The flat of the sword connected hard with the coyote's ribs, and he yelped loudly, rolling off Misha. He lay on the ground, panting and whimpering, and Rob saw his chance. "Come on, Joe," he said, his voice as low and soothing as he could manage. "We can help you. Let us change you back." Weapon: Greatsword (heavy melee) HP: 20/50 Dmg: 10 Monster's HP: 8/60

The coyote lifted his head, tongue hanging out the side of his muzzle, and the look was pathetic enough to shoot right through Misha's defenses. When he whined, she whimpered in sympathy. Then she abruptly dropped her shield. It fell with a clang and she bypassed it with quick steps until she stood directly beside the transformed boy. She sank to her knees. "Oh, sweetie," she cooed. Her slim arms slipped around his neck and Misha ducked her head until she could bury her face in rough fur. "It's okay. We've got you. We'll fix you and take you home to your mom and it will be okay." She hugged him before turning her head towards Rob, cheek pressing against Joe's neck. "Got that cure, Shakespeare, dear?" she asked. "Got it right here, love. Hang on a mo." Rob resheathed his greatsword beneath his coat, then dug around in his pockets, finally producing a small bottle. Uncorking it, he knelt next to Misha and the coyote, eyeing the beast's sharp teeth. Joe seemed to be completely subdued, laying as he was in Misha's arms and allowing her to pet him. That was evidence enough for Rob that it was safe. "Here you go, mate," he said, tipping the contents of the bottle into the enchanted coyote's open mouth. "Drink up." The coyote lapped his tongue as Rob poured the cure down his gullet. His amber eyes widened, and Rob sat back as the animal's body shimmered and shifted back into that of a lanky teenage boy. As had been the case when the others had taken the cure back in Louisiana, Joe was completely naked. Rob took off his coat and placed it over the lower half of Joe's body to at least give the kid some sense of modesty. Next to Joe was a bottle that looked all too familiar. Rob peered at the label and nodded. Enchanted wine, same as in the swamp. He'd take this back to the Prytaneum with them when they left. Which would be after they got Joe back home. "How you feeling, Joe?" he asked with a smile.

Quote: 76-100: Torn Spellbook Page: It seems like gibberish to you, but you decide to keep it anyway. "Less furry, I hope." Misha drew back to give the young man room to better pull the long coat on to hide himself. Her smile stayed warm, though, and completely unbothered by the fact of his nudity. With a faint giggle, she rocked back on her heels and brushed off her knees. When she reached for her shield, though, she paused, frowned, and switched directions. A piece of paper fluttered just beside the shield, threatening to take off at the next strong breeze. Misha snatched at it. One side featured a jagged edge as if it had been torn from a book. Bringing it close to her face, the brunette scowled at the dark scribbling marks that covered the page. It made no sense to her. No language that she knew. A glance up at Rob and then she shrugged. Folding it neatly into quarters, she tucked it into her coat before retrieving her shield and standing. "Come on, Joe." She smiled again, reassuringly like a full-on sunrise. "Let's get you home to your mom."
