Quote:
3-4: Once they are beneath the water's surface, Chosen find themselves within safe pockets of air, being guided deeper toward the bottom of the lake. Here they find a strange piece of electrical equipment that has been rusted over by time, but still clearly has functioning lights on one side. As they get close to it, the woman seems to lose her mind, looking at them like she doesn't recognize them. She immediately lashes out, grabbing at them and trying to drown them.

It seems obvious that she was leading them to this strange gadget, and likely it is the source of her madness. However, it has 50 HP, and each time they attack it the lady deals them 5DMG. If they choose to attack her first, she has 20HP.

The woman didn't seem all too willing to have a conversation. "I have to show you," she said, and that was that. She tugged Misha a little more gently this time and headed back under water, pausing every now and again in another air pocket. Brian was worried, but not especially tense. He had to be ready to react.

He saw the Thing before they really came upon it. How in the world had an electrical something-or-other ended up at the bottom of the lake? He looked to Misha and then to the woman, but that was it.

She turned to them, suddenly wide-eyed, and peered between them. The calmness in her gaze was gone. She reached out and tried to drag Misha down, but Brian reached back in return and took a fistful of moon-colored hair. The strange woman twisted and turned, trying to pull herself away. Brian pointed to the Thing. Maybe that had been causing it all! Maybe that had been what had turned on the television?

With a pained hiss, Misha fought the sudden pull and tried to ignore the agonizing pinch of icy fingers on her arm. She saw Brian grab for the woman's pale hair and part of her wanted to laugh. Such a girl fight move! But that part swiftly lost prominence as the yanks on her arm gained fervency and she felt what had to be fingernails digging into her flesh through her shirt. Misha gritted her teeth and twisted until she could dig her own nails into her attacker. She had no idea what happened but she was not about to go quietly!

What appeared to be flesh parted slightly under her red-painted nails, to Misha's shock, flowing like water but the grip loosened as the water-woman howled with a mixture of pain and anger. No damage was visible but the result remained somehow.

Rather than panicking like most drowning folk, Misha had turned around and begun attacking the strange woman. He'd rather not have to kill her, but there was no way two Chosen were going to be drowned in a lake at the hands of an insane ghost or spirit or whatever the hell she was. His curiosity had given way to anger and survival instinct, though he was still a bit concerned for this strange creature's motivations. Had this been her plan all along, to try and kill them?

He wrapped the woman's hair around his wrist and pulled hard. As everything else but water weights, she was much lighter than expected. She yelled and flailed against him as he grabbed her by the upper arm and released her hair.

Brian's attack loosened the hold the woman had on Misha and she turned her fury on him, trying to lash out and grab him. All too familiar with those cold, pinching hands, Misha reached out quickly and grabbed for the woman herself. Both hands wrapped around the arm Brian had not managed to pin. The woman flailed, stronger than one would have thought given her slim, graceful form. Misha grimaced and tried to pull the woman upwards, away from the object that seemed to be the cause of her change.

It seemed like they were trying to pull the spirit apart, and now Brian doubted she was a spirit in the Western sense. She was cool and wet, but she was solid. It was like battling a corpse.

He released her arm and wrapped his elbow down under her throat while the other arm gripped a nearby rock for support. He didn't want to end a life. God, please don't make him, but she was still struggling against him and kicking his shins and now tearing at his arm with one hand.

Misha watched Brian apply a scarily efficient grapple to the woman-creature, his arm a solid bar under her chin and against her throat. Instinctively, the brunette knew that such a tactic was meant to disable, to rob someone's breath until they stopped struggling. It was a cop's tool, a soldier's knowledge; she sometimes forgot the training and skill set her sweetly gentle friend had.

Would it work on a creature who did not breath air, though, was the question. As Misha stared, biting her lip and hanging onto her captured limb, the woman slowed her motions until she merely twitched once. Twice. Then her head dropped to her chest and she went still. Misha shared a worried look with Brian. She hoped they had not killed her. If they had, how would they know?

Brian wasn't looking at Misha. He was looking at the insides of his eyelids. The last thing he wanted to do was seriously harm someone with his bare hands. He dreaded the thought that this spirit was especially fragile and he might have broken her neck, or maybe she was just faking it. He'd noticed that she hadn't particularly needed the air bubbles on the way down. Maybe she really did, though.

His chest ached when she stopped moving. He couldn't be sure what exactly he had done, but he started straight up toward the surface with an arm wrapped around the slender waist of the limp, pale body. An aging raft had been tethered to something at the bottom of the lake, and it was here he deposited the strange woman. She looked so frail in the moonlight.

He closed his eyes again, shook his head, and dove back down in the search for Misha. he found her fairly easily, but bypassed her and went straight for the electronic gadget, kicking its hull with his foot.

Misha had waited below when Brian took the woman up to the surface and she still waited when he returned. Her brow furrowed in worry when he went straight past her without a glance or gesture and deliberately drove his foot into the electronic device. She bit her lip. She did not like that look - or rather non-look - on his face. Shaking her head, Misha dismissed the concern for later and made a quick plea to whatever deity might have been listening that the air bubbles would remain in place while they finished this bit of vandalism.

She sure as hell did not want anyone else losing their mind. Pushing herself downwards, she joined Brian at the object. With no shoes, she dared not kick the thing but she spotted a tree limb nearby and retrieved it. She slammed the branch into the gadget, earning a satisfying clang.

Electrocution was probably a concern, wasn't it? Brian considered this only after he tried to grab the rusted shape and heave it up. Something broke in his hands and a puff of red rust particles floated in the water. he looked to Misha. Okay, maybe they could actually destroy this thing? He took another handful of whatever he was breaking and pulled again, bracing his feet against the body of the device.

Misha bashed it again but her aim was off this time and only clipped it. Nonetheless, some damage resulted; a small piece of metal broke off and sank to the bottom of the lake. She tried to avoid following its motion with her eyes. The oppressive sensation of water around them unsettled her even if they could still, thankfully, breathe.

Brian tried to tug again, but no more of the metal peeled off in his hands. In fact, he was pretty sure that he'd hurt himself. It was hard to tell under water, though, and his arm was already bleeding. He looked over his hand and decided that it was fine. With a cursory look upward, he noted that the bubbles still seemed to be floating, ready for them to rise up. Did that mean that the spirit was still alive?

Misha paused in the middle of another swing as Brian brought his hands up to study them. She frowned, craned her neck, and tried to see what had his attention. Spotting some blood, she caught her breath and bit down on her lower lip. It was the sight of blood that turned her stomach suddenly; it was the thought of it being Brian's blood. She drew back her arm and bashed her makeshift weapon into the whirring device.

Brian caught Misha looking when he turned back down. He smiled, closed-lipped, to avoid any further mouthfuls of water. He was fine. It wasn't so much a "wound" as it was a "boo boo." They had their first aid kits back at the lake house anyway and he'd be easy to patch up. He touched her arm in reassurance and took a gulp of air before diving down to stand on the strange structure and give that panel a proper pull. It broke in half in his hands, and he saw exposed wires. Considering the thing was still lit up, he flung his hands into the air as if in surrender and the half-panel floated to the bottom of the lake.

No searing pain. No sudden death. He shot Misha thumbs-up and went on a brief search for another branch. No way was he disarming this thing with his bare hands at the bottom of a lake.

Hmph. He was a lunatic. Retreating to the bubble for a big gulp of air, Misha considered the scolding she would give him later for attacking an electrical device under water with his bare hands. When he went to get a branch, though, she felt unknown tension in her shoulders relax. She smiled at him, rolled her eyes, and swung again. The machine shuddered with the blow.

Brian found a stick of fair size and swam back up to the bubble to catch some more air. They didn't seem to be getting any smaller with the breaths they took. That was good at least.

He went back down to the strange contraption then and wedged the waterlogged stick into the array of wires. He'd expected it to break, but the wood must have been green for it began to pry up the wires rather nicely. They'd be hard to totally remove, but at least they seemed to be getting somewhere.
