“Oh, I can help take you to him!” Ze volunteered the moment the request left Ottolo’s mouth. “If it would please you to, and I am sure it would, he stays at a wondrous facility which helps so many, and the walk is—” Zekiel tipped his head, words temporarily skirting off track as his mind worked over the concept; the medical halls were not precisely close, but the trip could be made. “It would allow you to see sunlight! When you are ready. Shorter trips, perhaps, if those would be too long to begin with, though it will be wondrous when you can—the halls are so long! With so many who come under his care, and it is a special sort of magic to watch, I think.”

Zekiel certainly never forgot the first time he had visited, sent by the Sanctum on that occasion, to bring the gods’ blessings to those in need of and undergoing treatment. While it wasn’t the sort of healing within his own power, it was absolutely fascinating to him, and refreshing to watch other forms of serving a positive purpose.

“The gods brought me to him there before anywhere else,” Ze said, “so it was watching him help that I first came to know him—and how I knew to bring him to you when you needed it.”

The question, for some reason, caught Tac by surprise, and Ze's eager response made his brow knit with concern. Here, Ottolo had Zekiel's protection. The trip itself would wear the boy down, never mind how people at the clinic would react....

Still, he found a corner of his mouth lifting. It was refreshing to be around this pair. ..once in a while. Not too often. Not for long. Just a little

"Considering the length of the trip there and back, it would be wise to keep you nearer your room for the time being. No need to make an arduous trip when I can come here just fine. Not now, but when you are more comfortable with moving about." His lips pursed slightly. He would also need the time to assure the other doctors that the boy was not cursed... That was going to be interesting.

For the first time since first encountering the Yaelians, Ottolo did not have the thought of him looking any more peculiar than they did cross his mind. Right now, he had not considered the fact

"I think once I see the outside, once I feel it and smell it and am permitted to be about it, I will recover more quickly. Back when I was in my homeland, my mother and I were nomads, moving from place to place in search of... Well, Of that I am not sure. I've walked thousands upon thousands of miles within my lifetime, and I'm sure that my legs miss that." Back in Sauti and Zena, Ottolo was always sickly and weak, but though his lungs were, his legs were not. He remembered vividly running and playing through snow and sand, through lush grasses and watery shores. Never for long since his breath escaped him so quickly, but he still enjoyed doing so.

"I feel like... There is actually a chance for happiness now... That my life is finally changing, that I am no longer bound by what has happened and what pain there was... And I am excited to be alive..." His beaming finally relaxed to a small, relaxed smile, one that seemed to feel much more natural and comfortable, and his voice had become soft, as if speaking his thoughts too loudly would cause them to become undone. "Thank you... Both of you..."

I am excited to be alive.

Zekiel remembered, then, his first encounter with Ottolo. Those first moments he had with him when the boy became conscious enough to speak wherein he begged quietly at first, but then louder and more desperately with each refusal on Zekiel’s part to take the gods’ work into his own hands—I want to die…I want to die…I WANT TO DIE!

Let me die…

And yet. Here, now…

Zekiel’s gaze flicked to Ottolo again, watching intently and feeling his chest swell at the sight of the other boy’s happiness. The warmth in his chest remained even after they finished their trek and made it back into Ottolo’s room, after helping him up and back into his bed and thanking Tacrith greatly, for much of it had been possible only with his aid and resources. Zekiel couldn’t imagine more wonderful progress for this moment, and he could only trust that the gods had more to come.
