He decided that perhaps it was time to try and put his weapon to use in a more concentrated manner. Taking a firm grip on the handle of his whip, he whirled to consider the available targets. Diryas pulled his arm back and, eye on a particularly persistent feathered friend, snapped it forward. Maybe it was beginner's luck, but he scored a hit square on the bird's body with the characteristic crack. Yanking his whip back to him, he didn't bother waiting around to see if the bird stayed down--he was going to use the chance given to get to the hotel. He trusted that Zebulon would meet him there. It wasn't a slow introduction. There was no easing in to things, no little lessons, and this wasn't the easy game that Max had told them it would be, it seemed. Out of the fire and immediately they were under attack: strange birds diving and swooping, the scrape of a feather across his cheek and the breath of air against his skin as the beast flapped around him.
Some instinct, new but well-trained, brought the dagger up over his head, blade turned outward. It caught the beast and, with a scream, it moved out of his way, leaving a path for Asher to dive into a run, following someone in the distance toward what was, apparently, safety in the form of the hotel.

Rory was completely unprepared for this and it probably showed in the way she shrieked and covered her head with her shield. She tried to look around but it was hard when every time she lifted her shield another bird was trying to attack. When she felt the heavy weight of one of the creatures landing on her meager shelter, she heaved it up and threw the blasted thing away from her.
From what she could hear, the hotel down the way was the place to go but she couldn't get there yet. She tried to continue to the hotel as she fought off these birds.

Rory yelped in pain and surprise as a bird tore through her coat on one arm and sliced shallow furrows in her arm. Gripping one handle of her shield, she slung the weight toward her latest attacker. The thunk was strangely satisfying and she continued trying to make her way through the freaky birds toward the hotel.

Well, he didn't die in flames. That was a start. In retrospect, it would probably be cool that he could just stride through flames and end up somewhere else. It was always every dude's dream to walk away from explosions, but what if he could just walk through one instead? He didn't really have time to reflect on the state of the badassery of strolling through fire, though, considering the fact that the lodge they ended up in was completely destroyed and also there were a lot of angry birds. A lot of big, angry birds. Throwing themselves at him. Zebulon snorted to himself at the thought of himself just being a circular green pig, though maybe he stopped smirking quite as much when a bird suddenly swiped by him and took a bit of skin with it. Zebulon vaguely looked down at his arm and figured he might need to put a bandage on it later, or maybe some of the snow he was actively wading through at the moment. If he could get away from these birds, anyway. Zebulon threw his arm over his head, attempting to cover himself with the shield. It successfully protected his head, but not his other arm, which ended up getting swiped at by another angry bird. Clearly cowering under his shield wasn't going to get him anywhere, because of course it wasn't. What was he, a coward? Zebulon was no coward. He straightened his back out a bit and looked at his options, attempting to evaluate a clear path down to the hotel-- or at least, a place where there were maybe less angry birds circling nearby so he could bash through the path faster. It took a couple moments of his eyes darting back and forth before they locked on a direction he could take with only a few birds, overall. That way would work. Zebulon charged, as well as one could charge through a pile of snow anyway, and swung his shield in front of him, bashing a bird to the side and leaving his path in front of him open. Then, he swung his shield in front of him and squatted behind it, as well as one could squat through a pile of snow, and started to push his way through the birds to get himself to the hotel. The active defense instead of the passive defense appeared to be much more effective, because while it wasn't the fastest trip down, he did make it down with no further cuts and bruises. Status Zebulon's Health: 52 (+6 Defensive Weapon) Weapon: Shield (6 base) Result: Yes

Seriously, these birds were ridiculous. What in the world was making them attack people? Rory felt one land on her back and she grabbed the edge of her shield to try and slam it against the bird. She knew it would probably hurt, but maybe it would knock the bird off.
Except it didn't. The damn thing was still squawking and tearing at her coat. Instead, she flopped into the snow and tried to roll around in order to get rid of it. Eventually, the bird lost its grip and she was able to smash it with the edge of her shield. Unfortunately, she didn't have much time before another was gunning for her and she used her shield for cover again as she tried to escape to the hotel.

Mathilda raised an eyebrow at the birds. Seriously? She had been here five seconds and she was feeling so attacked right now, literally. Jumping back as a bird dived down at her, she removed her dagger from her boot and threw it at the stupid thing.

Cheering as the thing fell, she grabbed her dagger and moved on to the hotel.

It was when a bird tried to pull her hair that Rory wished she had braided her hair before stepping through the hearth. She twirled around and tried to hit the bird with her shield. At this point, she was pretty glad she'd picked this. Her other choice would have been a bow and she was pretty sure these things would have murdered her before this if she'd chosen them.
She was still hopeful that some day she would make it to the hotel. She really didn't want to let Demeter down on her first time out.

… and there were no answers. Cat was overwhelmed by it all- the sudden shift from warm to cold, the flurry of activity from the other Chosen, and worst of all the beating of massive wings that descended towards them amidst beaks and talons. She did her best to run with the others and let loose an arrow or two without much effect and ending up on the receiving end of one of those beaks as she continued to move with the others.

At this point, Rory was pretty sure she was not going to make it to the hotel. She was going to be fighting birds off forever. Yep. With a frustrated cry, she slung her shield at another bird to knock it out of the air. But that meant she was without her shield until she made her way to where it had landed a few yards away.

She was envious of her peers who brought shields at this point, looking for cover amidst the barrage from above as she continued to hustle down the mountain, feeling a talon scrape along her scalp as she ducked beneath the sporadic spruce.

Any amount of training couldn’t have prepared her for this… it didn’t seem to matter how many arrows she fired, or how many met their mark, there was no end to the onslaught from above.

Cat swore as another one of these horrible birds swept in and pecked at her - how far was this hotel, or had she simply gotten turned around in the fray?
