“I think, I might have found something close to what I’m looking for at least?” He offered by means of comfort. “If you remember names, we might be able to put what you find in perspective still at least?”

He did hesitated at the Anglo-Saxon runes, the gems were odd, and he wondered why they were in the library. Runes were very old, right? He squinted at the book and at the second in the ‘eye’ series. ‘The Heck.” He whispered curiously. Would that be older or younger than the mysterious ‘Eye’ books? Gems seemed especially odd as well, were they supposed to be runes?

“Damn.” He hissed. “Library, if you can hear me I really appreciate you opening the door for us. And I really do feel you have some kind of intelligence, but… lord I think my Achilles heel is that I want to learn too many things, and you are really dangerous for that want.”

He really, really wished that this didn’t feel like a trap.
He reached carefully to pick up the book on runes trying to avoid touching the strange ‘gems’ or disturbing them.

She closed her book with a snap before placing it gently back. "Some student, um, talking about dying. Don't know if that's useful." If she treated this like a video game (as she had been) it might be, thought.

"Zac, please be careful." Frowning, Temperance reached out to the next book in the series.

The book of runes lies quietly in Zac's hands. When it's opened, it provides no memories, only a discussion of the many styles of runes. Of particular interest are the examples of rune poems. Several of them look familiar, as if Zac has seen them before; the runes are labeled with their meanings, but not their names.

Zac recognizes the runes for birch, gift, and grave.

If the library hears his address, it doesn't react to it.

The Semblance of Unity
The same group as before, but lacking the Chinese boy. "Where's Ming," says the dark-faced girl, and whoever's memory this is shifts uncomfortably, jostling Temperance's view of the scene.

"The Otherworld," says whoever Temperance is now--a girl?--"They tried it, and he is. Um. Different, now. So that's... I mean... it worked?"

"Different how?"

Temperance, or the body she's ride-alonging in, shakes her head, and is filled with tense foreboding.

“That’s… that’s odd.” Zac said with a small frown. “… this isn’t like the other books, it’s a regular book.” But, it’s familiar too, He wonders if he should try and pin down that familiarity, the fact the runes are familiar at least in passing isn’t so strange, many ‘new age’ shops sport necklaces in pewter on waxed cords or key chains for people to wear to ward off evil or draw good fortune.

But why the poems, why are they familiar as well?
Birch, gift and grave, like the class about Robert Frost’s poem, though that particular teacher seemed to think that all poets were referencing suicide. He squashed that particular thought for now and leaned to try and get a closer look at the ‘gems’, rather curious if they were intended as ‘rune stones’

If they seemed to –be- runes and thereby related to the book he might pick one up, otherwise he was going to pick up the next book in the ‘eye’ series.

"They're just... talking about going here and becoming different. I... I don't think we need this." She closed the book carefully and placed it back on the shelf. As much as she found herself curious, Temperance wasn't here for herself.

She glanced over at Zac. "A regular book? Is that... possible? I mean, here, that is." Shaking her head, she reached forward for the History of Ashdown.

The gemstones are what they appeared to be: uncut gemstones, freckles of red and blue stones peeking from between dark gray granite. Among them are some lumpy clumps of ore. One of them in particular, the silver clump, calls out to Zac.

The Semblance of Unity
An unfamiliar girl stands before Temperance-but-not, and her gray eyes spark with her intensity as she says, "So fix it. You want them to win, but you make them play the game--why not be honest?"

"I can't," says Temperance, her voice a rolling tenor. "It's out of my hands now. It'll start over again, and that's... that's all that will happen. We can't stop it."

"We can," says the girl, "we can and we will. Everything can be broken."

"I didn't...think it was, but It's right here. I think I might see if we can take it 'home' with us." He said with a cautious admittance. It felt so familiar, and some of the words as well.

He tipped his head, squinting at the strange stones, the silver glint catching his eye amid the tumble of ores and granite. He cautiously fished it free trying not to send the rest tumbling if he could avoid it. He'd like to leave this poor library in as good a state as he found it even if it was rather run down.

Temperance closed the book. "I don't think I'm finding anything, Zac. What about you?" She leaned over his shoulder to stare at the rocks he was poking at.

"I don't know, there's this little piece of silver here." He explained as he plucked it up. "The book, the normal one I mean, it seemed familiar too, maybe I just read something like it before but..." He shook his head thinking about Autumn's journal that 'She' had written and yet, not written 'this time'.

"I mean, some of the runes did, more than the book really?"

"You might not be finding what I'm looking for, but, maybe you're finding things? He offered trying to reassure her. "You said you saw people, maybe I know who they are, did they give names? Can you tell me what they looked like?"

"The runes seemed familiar... Have you done any rune fortune-telling or anything?" Temperance had once possessed a very tiny book about that subject, gifted to her by an odd uncle. She didn't remember a lick of it, really.

Her thoughts about runes, scant though they may be, were quickly waylaid by Zac's suggestion. Temperance nodded and pointed to each book as she described what she saw. Otherland, Sunny, Ming... Luckily, she'd only seen a few.

"So... does it mean anything?"

If the expression on his face alone doesn't tell her that at least some of what she saw is important, then the tension that springs to his shoulders well may.
He swallowed hard to push at the lump in his throat that he has to admit is focused on what she's just said about the concerning Michael.

"Michael, He's one of the missing, one of the ones that... that my story about being lost in the woods for a week is tied to. He's...dead. He washed up on the beach but he was one of the, the Moon-walkers or, I'm probably naming them wrong but, he was at the Library." He said and bit at his lip.

Ming, so that was the one who said they 'had to do something' about Michael.
This wasn't what -he- had come looking for, but it felt enormous, like the weight of a large hand pressing down on him.

"I know if feels like nothing but, if you haven't looked at the rest of those books you should. Give me a moment to finish with these and I'll look too alright? I... I think we need to tell my Dad about these, Mister Mercer I mean. I don't think...I mean I don't know for sure that we can do anything with traditional Law about this but, I... I think we just uncovered something big. Well...YOU did. We might need to know what it was that they 'tried' and, what if anything they might have done to Michael, what happened to Ming"

Temperance's brows furrowed. She'd heard of Michael's demise, but hadn't put two and two together until Zac helped.

"Dad?" Wasn't that the name of that detective guy? He was on television sometimes, the news and whatnot. "Yeah, I think someone should be told, but is he gonna believe that we found it in magical books? And what's a moon-walker?" She wondered if the people in these books had killed Michael.

"I'll.. look through the next one. And then tell you, um, what I see, okay?" She picked up the next book in the series.

“Trust me, I think Dad… m...Mister Mercer, has seen more than the both of us together. I think he was one of the first people to end up here with real intent. I mean, I think I might have gotten stuck here but, I was trying to help him. It’s just that you can’t exactly publish things like “Michael was a...were-wolverine who attacked us with some others from an elevator that connected to a magical paralel town almost like ours but with more things that would actually like to eat you.”

“...Moonwalker being apparently the polite term for the shifters.” He added after a moment before turning his attention back to the strange silver stone.

Zac takes up the stone, and it feels... right, somehow, to have it in his hand. It glimmers there, and then--and then it turns to liquid, dissolves into Zac's skin.

Vanished.

And just like that, they both know it's time to go. Something ripples beneath Zac's skin, impatiently.

It was soothing for a moment, the rightness of it in his hand, pretty even, and then… everything goes quite to heck and spits on any worldly expectations you might have in the process short of strange substances found primarily in science class.

It turned to liquid in his hand, almost like mercury because of its silvery color.

If that weren’t strange enough it vanishes, and he knows because he can FEEL it, into his skin. Not evaporated, not magically vanished, more like magically took possession of his hand .

He makes a startled sound, stepping back from the other stones, and whatever other books he might have peered at until that happened.

It ripples under his skin and he does a very nearly full body shudder at the sensation of impatience.

It’s time to go,

“Right… that was. I was not expecting. Um… yes. I think, I think that was quite enough for today.” He shuddered again.
“Let’s um. Let’s go shall we? And um, Let’s hope whatever it was is um… not especially hostile!”

Good Lord he hopes that someone can tell him what the hell just happened. Maybe that strangely ‘normal’ book will have answers. He can only hope.
