"I wasn't treating Chris," Jack replied with a verbal shrug. "Let him be pissed at me." It wasn't as though her cousin ever really liked him for one reason or another anyway.

"I'll give him my fries," Chel said conclusively, already digging through the bag for her miniature carton.
As they pulled in she looked up at the apartment complex, now adjusted to keeping an eye for Shun so she could avoid him. "F'you see Shun, just say hi an' keep walkin' alright?" She knew they knew each other but not how or to what degree, so she didn't want to accidentally get caught in ten minutes of awkward conversation excusing herself.

After Jack clicked the car into park, he gave her a strange look. He had yet to wholly understand Chel's relationship with the sergeant, but it wasn't really like her to avoid people.
"You a wanted girl now?" he asked.

How did she explain the complicated circumstance? It would sound stupid now. "I told him about magic and I didn't like it and he didn't like that I didn't like it and it's part of why I got in a crash."
"Somethin' like that." She got out and led him upstairs mostly in silence. When she opened the door she was pleased to see that Chris wasn't home. Not just because now she didn't have to share her fries.
She'd text him later about where he went. "Alright, get the questions out," she told him, throwing herself lazily onto the couch. Might as well start eating if he was going to grill her.

The door clicked behind him. He wasn't in a rush to eat.
"Just tell me the story," Jack said simply. It seemed easier than pestering Chel with question after question, even though it was probably going to happen afterwards.

Chel already had her mouth around her burger when he asked and she held up a finger for him to wait a moment. Once that was finished she said, "What's there to tell? I got drunk and tried crossin' the street. Combo didn't work so good."
She put a fry in her mouth and said, "An' 'fore you ask m'not goin' to th' hospital."

So it began.
"Why were you drunk in public? And drunk in the first place?"

"Who the ******** gets drunk at home? 'As just lonely as ********>" She yawned and then bit down on another fry. "As fer why- I drank too much." She thought that one was clever okay.

With a sigh, he crossed his arms. "I bought you food," he reminded Chel, because that meant she owed him as far as he was concerned. Jack wasn't one who often pursued the personal, but a car crash was a whole new level. "Was it about Mel?"

Chel rolled her eyes- she'd offered to pay. She owed nothing.
"Why d'you care?" she rebuffed, wiping part of her face and looking away. Easier to ignore if she didn't have to look at him.

"Because I know how much breaking up sucks." The words didn't sound any softer, but something in his eyes was; if he'd known about it, he would've regretted saying anything at all.

"I broke up with her. Why'd I be upset about that?" she said with a roll of her eyes.
From there on the couch she looked very much the image of tired. Defensive, covered in bruises, and more than willing to throw a few thorns at Jack's expense. "You know I coulda just been drinkin' t'drink right? Do that s**t all the time with Connor."

Jack looked like he was going to continue the line of questioning for a moment, but then he seemed to shrug it off. "Yeah," he said simply before joining Chel on the couch, long legs splayed out lazily.
He reached for the bag of food and finally retrieved his chicken strips. "You got something we can watch?"

"And then," Che said, taking on a somewhat movking tone, "M-Maybe we could hold hands before my mom gets home?"
She snickered to herself before getting up to turn on Chris' xbox; aka the universa dvd and netflix player. She tossed him the controller when he was ready and said, "Up go you." When she sat back down on the couch it was with a slight wince; still not used to the bruises.

Jack gave her a strange look, not understanding the context of the mockery, then turned his attention to the Netflix selection. One of those batshit insane aliens-influencing-human-history documentaries was thrown on; he wasn't paying attention to the material anyway, using it more for noise accompaniment than anything.
He was stuck in the middle of looking like he wouldn't strike up conversation again, since Chel wasn't talking about what he wanted her to, and being annoyed with his own pettiness.
