Three moderately-sized dogs slunk out of the shadows and into the relative security of the underbrush. Three ripples of foliage traced circles around the young shinobi, seemingly waiting for something. As the sun finalized its descent, a thick fog would roll in, gradually obscuring the ground and, eventually, the house itself. At the same time, the sound of the creek started to grow louder, almost to a deafening level. The ground under his feet would make a horrible sucking noise, then start falling in underneath Axel, along with a large amount of water--as though a sink hole had opened up and the creek had diverted into it. It was threatening to suck him under and squeeze the air out of him, and if he got out, he'd still have to contend with the dogs.

Everything happened fast. Too fast. The water flowed on to him and he didn’t have any time to react other than to pull out his blade, Kodokumaso. He looked around and couldn’t see anything. This mist had come from out of nowhere, which was queer, the lack of visibility, coupled with the water at his feet made him ever more uneasy. The young swordsman took a step forward, and that was when he felt the ground below him begin to give way. That was when he heard this loud, unmistakable sucking sound as the ground began to pull him in. There was no way this was natural. He had been around these parts just this morning, this water and sucking ground threatened to undo the work he had done at the old man’s dojo. He gritted his teeth and tried to jump, but couldn’t. His legs had already been sucked into the ground. ‘********. What am I doing to do now…” The redhead wondered, as he quickly went into the sinkhole. By the time he looked at his right arm and saw Kodokumaso, he was almost waist deep. It only took one look at his family’s ancestral sword to realize what he had to do. He sucked in a mouthful of air through his mouth, Hyaaaaaa he screamed as he slashed the sword, letting his chakra focus at the tip of the weapon as he slashed downward, letting the chakra he had focused in the tip of the sword release into what appeared to be a tear in the air that expanded as long as the sword sliced through. As soon as it was materialized, the tear grew twice as wide as it was long, and with its growth, came a sound as loud as that of the sinkhole that had just been created, and a force as powerful as that which had sealed Axel away the day before. This force began to pull the chakra from the ground and the mist, until both the sinkhole and the mist had gone away. Should the ground below him reverted to its original form, Axel would turn to face the dogs with a look of great annoyance. His new clothing had just gotten stained by the dirt and water that could have most likely ended his life. He brought Kodokumaso to a ready position and waited for the dogs to come to him. Should they not approach, it would be him who would run to them.

The ground was disrupted by the sword's effect and stopped sucking the boy down, but the water continued to splash into the pit. A tremor would run through the mud under Axel's feet, just strong enough to potentially knock him off-balance. At the same time, water at his feet would form into crab-like claws and attempt to drag him down further into the muddy pit. As if to top it all off, the dogs took that moment to lunge down toward him, fangs bared.

Isonagi no Jutsu [ Beach Crab ] Rank: D Official Description: A Jutsu that can only be used on water or atop loose soil (sand, non-rocky aerated dirt, etc,) this technique causes a pair of pincers to rise out of the ground/water and grasp the target by the ankles before pulling him underground/water. An important difference between this technique and Doton: Shinjuu Zanshu is that in this technique the target is fully enveloped in the earth or water. If the victim expends one [1] rank higher than the technique in stamina, then the target can break free, due to the loose earth. Water is less efficient because of its fluidity, and the target not held long. Axel took a step forward and ran his chakra through Kodokumaso once more, only that this time, he didn’t focus it on the tip of the blade, but instead on the entirety of the weapon, coating it with a thick, black layer of chakra that seemed to mesh sublimely on the snow-white sword. Then, he felt the tremor, it was barely strong enough to make him lose his balance and fall on his knees on the mud. It seemed these canines could use chakra, which was a pain in the a** for him, because they would be significantly stronger. He felt something grip his leg and begin to drag him down, hard. His eyes moved downward and saw a single crab claw holding on to his leg. Axel swung his blade with fury, the chakra scabbard that coated his weapon made quick contact with the crab claw and the force of the hit made it give way to simple water. In the commotion of their jutsu, Axel had lost his focus, and found himself face first in the mud, losing track of where the canines were, that is, until he felt a sharp pain on his left shoulder. Axel cried out in pain and moved his eyes and muddy face to look forward, where he saw one of the dogs attached onto his shoulder, and two others nearing him to bite down. He swung the sword at the one that was biting down on him, trying to cut at its legs, then, he changed the angle of his hands and swung upward, trying to disrupt the two incoming dogs from biting on to him. His priority was getting the animal stuck on his shoulder off, to then deal with the two that were left standing, but he had to stand up. If he did not stand, odds were he would die here, pathetically with a face full of mud, without avenging his family or redeeming himself in the eyes of Kaileer, and the village.

Mist would fill the air overhead, obscuring sight of anything above the pit Axel found himself in. Water continued to rush into the pit from the creek and even dislodged a large chunk of the nearby shore in the process, which only worsened the situation; Axel would soon find it very difficult to escape if he didn't act soon. The dog that had bitten him barked and wiggled backward as he knocked it away, its leg severely injured and bleeding, but the other two lunged at him in its place. His upward slash caught one of them, slicing open a large gash in its chest that turned it into little more than dead weight as it fell toward him, but the other one lunged for his sword hand, teeth gnashing.

Axel felt himself being pulled by the water and mud bellow him, it seemed like the trouble that had come from whatever crevice the animals had created had not come to an end yet. As he slipped back, and eventually down, he felt the innards of the dog he had cut fall on him, well, it wasn’t innards, not really, just blood and fur. And maybe a bit of its heart, Axel didn’t really have time to notice. What he did feel, very well, was the weight of the animal falling on his body, particularly on his injured shoulder. While on the one hand it anchored him to the ground, preventing him from slipping further toward the crevice, it also made it hard for him to move up his head, or any part of his body really, and breathe. And then there was the situation with the third dog coming to bite him. ‘What the hell did I get myself into…’ He wondered for just a moment, before closing his eyes and running even more chakra onto the blade on his right hand. From the pitch black cover of chakra, specs of white, black and grey light came, soon after, he thrusted the blade forward, letting it explore into pure electrical energy. The sword at his hand, Kodokumaso, has transformed into a single bolt of lightning, at times as black as Axel’s chakra, others, white as the blade itself, but most often, a mesh of greys. The powerful lightning flew straight and true, aimed at the dog. If it were to have hit it, the entirety of Axel’s body would disappear in a bright flash of electricity and he would have reappeared five feet above the more than likely electrocuted dog. From there, he would bring down his sword hard and fast, aiming to slash the animal’s head clean off with one powerful stroke. Should Kodokumaso’s Iron Rush miss, the bolt of lightning would travel for fifty feet, in which time all that would have been in Axel’s hand was the hilt of his sword, giving the animal ample time to maul his hand.

Axel's lightning bolt struck true and the last of the dogs fell, its body flopping lifelessly into the muddy pit where he had been. In mere minutes the water rushing in from the creek would cause the mud to rise up and drown them if they were still alive, much as it had threatened Axel.
The mist was horribly thick, much too thick to see through without some sort of enhanced eyesight. The sound of the creek had grown since it started spilling into the pit, filling the air with the sounds of running water and violent splashing. There would come a sound of shifting earth in the direction of the pit, but at almost the same time a fist-sized ball of water would rocket toward Axel from the direction of the house, too difficult to see through the fog until it was almost at him.

Day 13
At the end of his attack on the dog, Axel landed on the bank of the river. His clothes were soiled, and he was all around annoyed with the task he had been given, and the prospect of having to clean all this mess up was weighting on him. The old man was going to be so pissed when he saw all of- no he wasn’t. He was blind. He would never see it. But he would feel that Axel was hiding something from him, so it made no difference at the end of the day. He moved his hand to his injured shoulder to prod and see the extent of his injury. The stupid action was met with a hiss of pain. The dog had bitten down deep enough for him to be able to touch not the wound itself, but the general area, and an attempt to move the arm was met with similar pain. He would have to get that checked out as fast as possible, but at least this was done with and Axel could go get paid. “This is finally ov-“ His celebration was cut should by a solid blow on to his stomach which launched him back a couple of feet. “What the hell was that?!” He cried out loudly, his voice a mix of pain and anger. He struggled to get up, but he did so as fast as he could without the use of his left arm. He closed his eyes and still felt the lingering sensation of hostility that was given to him by Shigure Souen, and he heard faint steps on the water, but whether it was two or four footsteps, he could not tell. He tracked them with his ears, or tried to, because the sound of the rushing stream going down the sink hole was just loud enough for him to not be able to tell where exactly it came from. When he was sure he had nailed the direction which the sound was moving from, he drew back his arm, and did a horizontal swing, releasing the pitch-black coating of his sword in a powerful chakra scabbard in the direction that Axel thought the sound was coming from, but he could never be sure if he had struck his target or not. Instead, with his eyes still closed he let his feet part slightly, moving his body sideways. He let his left arm rest limply by his side, his right barely able to hold Kodokumaso correctly due to its length. He breathed slowly and waited for his opponent to strike.

There was only the relative silence of the creek and the forest after Axel launched his attack. After a few minutes, with no reprisal forthcoming, the fog would clear to reveal a torn cloak on the shore near the direction toward which he had lashed out. The pit that had attempted to consume him was filled to the brim with a thin mud, but there were no dogs to be found in it; instead, there were two sets of footprints and a thin trail of blood droplets leading away from Takumi.

Once silence had overcommed the scene, Axel tentatively opened one eye, and saw nothing at first. He opened his other eye and scanned the vicinity, and saw no dogs, and nothing that could pose an immediate threat. He took a step forward and saw the tattered and torn cloak, along with the droplets of blood and sets of foot that lead away from Takumi. He growled as he saw them, and then looked at his shoulder, which was still bleeding from the bite. He released a puff of air in frustration, cleaned Kodokumaso on the side of his kimono, and ultimately sighed. With one strong tug, he tore the right sleeve from the Kimono, which just happened to be the cleanest one, and, using his right hand and his mouth, struggled to tie it around his injured shoulder, applying pressure on the wound to slow the bleeding. The more he tightened the wound, the more it hurt, but the better it would be for him in the short term. This wouldn’t address the bleeding or possibility of infection, he knew that, but it would serve its purpose and allow him to use both hands in combat, even if any movement with his left arm would sting as all hell. Once it was tight, he attempted to move his arm, and it hurt. Like hell. But less than it would have had he tried to move it with nothing. That would do. With his arm taken care of, for the time being, the young warrior sheathed Kodokumaso and went on pursuit of the trail his assailants had left behind, keeping his right hand always on the weapon’s sheathe.

The trails of footsteps wound through the trees unbroken until both sets disappeared altogether and were replaced by large paw prints. Each of the prints was bigger across than Axel was tall and they were getting progressively farther apart. After almost two kilometers of such a trail, they would suddenly get phenomenally far apart and would show up in clusters of four when they were present. The foliage overhead was broken and the sun shone through brightly along the trail as a result. There were no signs of the trail ending anytime soon, a fact made all the more evident by how visible it was.

Axel had followed the trail diligently. At first, he managed to keep an even pace, but as time went by, and as the trail grew further and further away, his wound began to slow him to the point where he felt that he couldn’t go any longer. That also happened to be the point where the prints got huge. He stared at them for one moment, and realized that in his current state, he would never be able to go toe to toe with that thing. With a sigh, the youth turned around and headed back to the barracks. Once there, he crawled over to the room that the old man had given him as noiselessly as possible (which in his current state meant he made a lot of noise) and blacked out. Upon waking up the following day, he realized he was naked, with a change of clothes laid next to his bed, his shoulder had clean bandages, and he could bare feel the wound. “You’re awake.” The blind old man spoke, feeling the change in Axel’s breathing pattern and deducing with it that he had woken up. He nodded. Slowly. Weakly. “That was quite the raucous you had out there.” He said plainly. Axel scanned the room, he could hear the man, but could not see him, until his eyes reached the corner of the room. The man sat cross legged on the ground, ‘looking’ out the window. The sun hit his tired, old face, and Axel knew that he had stayed up all night tending to the young warrior. “Old man, you didn’t have to do this.” He said weakly. “Zhao.” He said, a silence lingered for a moment. “My name is Zhao. And I needed you to get better so you could tend to my plants. Now get up. Get dressed, and go collect the money from your mission. It is clear you need more training.” His words stung more than the dog’s bite had, but he was right. If he was bested by three dogs and their master, how could he call himself a warrior. Slowly, Axel got up, and put on the plain white shirt the old man had provided and long black and gold pants. He bowed before the old man, and finally broke his silence. “Thank you Zhao.” With that, he was gone, with both Kodokumaso and Ice Vein at his hip, moving toward the city hall to report what he had seen, and to get the money for his temple.

Insight Rain: The user will practice extending themselves into the atmosphere, in a sense. After much dedication, the user develops the ability to sense hostile intent in the immediate area. As to where, however, they cannot be sure.
Skill - Multitasking: While the first two stages of the style revolve around the very basics of how to use a bow, the third stage incorporates the use multiple arrows into a more stylish way of battling. Mastery allows the user to simultaneously fire multiple arrows with any technique that does not specifically state otherwise, and allows the Arrow Creation technique to create up to three arrows at once with no increase in cost.

As the three travelers approached the old abandoned barracks, Houou quickly realized why this man needed an escort. He assumed the man was worried about bandits or thieves that were in the area. What he came face to face with was far less dangerous than armed enemies. The trail leading up was completely engulfed in thick, lush greenery. Normally this wouldn’t be an issue for most people to traverse however, this was not your typical wildlife. The area was rich with poisonous species of plants, vicious animals, and numerous places for them to hide. A misstep could prove fatal for anyone attempting to bushwhack through to the barracks.
Luckily for the historian, Houou and Artemis were more that equipped to handle this situation is a swift manner. Picking up his pace, Houou walked ahead of the others and stood before at the border of the overgrowth and the old road. Widening his stance and focusing on his breathing, Houou clapped his hands together to form the serpent hand seal. Suddenly the rustling of leaves and sounds of wood snapping and bending, began to echo throughout the immediate area.
Where first only sounds could be heard, everyone would start to notice the shaking of the bushes as the path began to part. The roots of the small bushes would begin to bend and warp themselves in order to reveal the old path that had been overgrown for who knows how long. This pattern of wildlife parting to either side of the road, continued for the entirety of the path leading to the barracks. It was quite magnificent to watch for houou. It was as if the wildlife was glowing like water. During this shift many animals could be seen scurrying to find cover, struggling to keep up with the shift of vines and roots.
With surrounding vegetation, Houou gathered bunches of wood together forming countless planks, four feet in length, leading all the way up to the front of the entrance to the barracks main building. Houous imagination proved for quite the unique walkway for the historian to traverse back and forth as he pleased. So In order to protect any traveler from crossing paths with one of the many venous animals houou had suspected to have inhabited the area, he began to craft a barrier, that would also serve at a hand railing. After putting the finishing details on the walkway, Houou put all of his focus into lifting the walkway several feet off the ground. Pillars rooted themselves to the bottom of the planks, then emerged from the ground, elevating the walk way to at safe sturdy height. Lastly, Houou erected six stars that would be formed from several leaves and roots,m. They ascended to meet the edge of the walkway. As the two ends touched. Vines began attaching themselves to each other, solidifying the bond. Houou dropped his arms in exhaustion. He wasn’t completely tired but holding the hand seal in that stuff position was enough to slightly fatigue him.
Turning to Artemis and the historian, houou placed one arm across his stomach, and raised one arm upwards in the direction of the top most stair, all while bowing in the same motion.
“please do the me the honor, my friend.”
Even though houou had released his hand seal, lotus flowers and long lemon grass were still sprouting and blossoming to the sides of the newly formed path. Houou was would quickly raise his eyes and flash Artemis a big smile. They needed only deliver the historian to the barracks entrance and pray that no snakes or creatures try to retaliate for disturbing their habitat.
The trip is boring. Artemis likes new places, but walking around always feels aimless. She likes being a wanderer but not the wandering; if she was capable of teleporting everywhere she wanted to be, she'd never take another step. It's especially tedious, she considers, when travelling with the human embodiment of anxiety. It's like carrying two palmfuls of water cupped together but the water is moving like its a whirlpool and every step carrying it just makes more spill.
When they find the plants everywhere, she is a little surprised. Escorting usually contains bandits and low life thugs. These plants aren't armed with rusty butterfly blades or brass knuckles inferior to Artemis' own. They hold only their natural poisons and offensive evolution. She puts her hands together to summon a few choice katon techniques, but Houou handles them with minimal effort.
Her eyebrows raised at the sight of the well-constructed path for them all. Having a senju around certainly had it's benefits, it seemed. She wasn't sure what to say about the display since she was still impressed with how fluid his motions had been. Any rabbits or birds or other wildlife hanging in the bramble had scurried away when their homes shuffled. She bit her lip as she waited for a smart a** comment to reveal itself to her.
She curled an arm around the Historian after Houou's grand gesture and returned his grin. She raised a hand to the greenery around them. "I almost can't beleaf how smoothly this has gone because of your unique skill set," she complimented. She looked around just in case as she walked their target through, to the front of the barracks. "But I better get to punch someone soon." When the Historian whimpered, she assured him that she would never raise a hand against him. Probably.

Houou gave an uncontrollable chuckle at Artemis’ leaf pun. He always loved that about here, the others are always so stern, but art and houou knew how to have a good laugh. As they watched the historian walk through the doors of the old barracks, Houou breathed a sigh of relief.
“well I hope you are still ready to punch someone. We’ve got some pinks that need to be reminded of their debts.”
Throwing his arm around Artemis’ shoulder, Houou pulled her along as they walked out from whence they came.
“So tell, do you punch adder with your left or right fist? I might need some combat advice..... Don’t tell Roxas.”
Houou said as their voices disappeared into distance.
