Regal Bastionxxxxxxx »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» "The human mind is like a parachute... It was a bit frustrating to see their opponent take such little damage from their attacks, but Regal knew that they needed to stick to their guns if they wanted to win. Quantity over quality. First though, they needed to deal with that Magnet Bomb. Luckily, they had studied up and practiced for exactly this type of attack.
"Wait until it's almost on top of you." He commanded. "Then use Dig!"
Terra loyally followed its trainers command and didn't so much as flinch until the attack was close enough. The thin layer of sheet metal obstructed it slightly, but after digging though all the spare metal over at the junkyard yesterday, the puppy Pokémons claws were more than up to the task. It popped underground just in time for the Magnet Bomb to crash into the ground where it had been standing just moments ago. It quickly emerged on another side of the battlefield, and its trainer wasted no time in calling out for a Rock Slide attack.
"Follow up with another Rock Tomb!" He cried as his Rockruff piled heaps upon heaps of stones on its opponent. Quantity, not quality. The duo knew that the damage would start to pile up as long as they kept up the pressure. It wouldn't be easy, but they weren't going to walk out of here without that badge.

Regal and his Rockruff were battling like something out of a textbook. Using Dig to avoid his Magnet Bomb was a great answer to the challenge Harvey had sent them, and they were quick to switch back to offense and keep him and his Magnemite pinned under their attacks. With their previous Stealth Rock attack obstructing it, the steel type had a tough time maneuvering through the hail of stones assaulting it and couldn't avoid getting knocked around a bit. Seeing the second wave coming close, the gym leader began calling out commands again to cut the attacks off at the source. "Magnemite." He called. "Blast through it with Flash Cannon."A blinding beam of light energy was immediately shot forward from his Pokémon and reduced the incoming attack to rubble. A layer of smoke enveloped the area where their attack had made contact, so Harvey wasn't sure whether or not they had managed to hit their opponent as well. Still, it was better to be safe than sorry. "Thunder Shock."Focusing its power on the units on either side of it, Harveys Magnemite launched a surge of electricity forward into the smoke where they had last seen their target. The odds of it connecting with something were questionable at best. But they weren't zero, either. Only time would tell.

Regal Bastionxxxxxxx »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» "The human mind is like a parachute... Terra tried dodging the Flash Cannon attack as it sailed towards him, but the Rockruff just wasn't quick enough to avoid the hit. Regal cursed out loud as his Pokémon was launched backwards from the super effective blast. It was a little shaky getting back up and it had fresh scrapes scattered all over, but all in all it looked liked Terra still had plenty of gas in the tank. Which was good news, because another attack was already coming their way.
"Double Team!" The trainer cried. "Dodge it and get in close!"
The incoming Thundershock passed harmlessly through one of Terras afterimages as the Rockruff split itself into many with its superior agility. Eager to get its retaliation in, the rock type raced towards Harveys Magnemite at its top speed. As it reached the large pile of rubble that remained of its previous rock attacks, the Pokémons trainer decided to switch gears and surprise Harvey by using the dirt and gravel to their advantage.
"Use the rubble for a Sand Attack!" He commanded. Terra immediately complied and began whipping rocks and dirt at Harveys Magnemite, obscuring it once more from view. It worked even better than Regal had expected. Not only was the thick veil of sand hiding his Rockruff, but some stray rocks were actually getting whipped out at their target as bonus. Not finished yet, the trainer called out for yet another Rock Tomb attack. It might have been hard to find their target under normal circumstances, but Terras Keen Eyes and sharp nose made it a simple task. With its prey located, the rock type dropped another volley of heavy stones on top of Harveys Magnemite. Each of their attacks was small, but that damage had to begin piling up eventually. It was just a matter of time.

Harveys opinion of Regal shot up a few notches when the trainer threw a curve ball at him and recycled the leftover rocks on the battlefield into a new attack. Manipulating the terrain in such a fashion was both creative and cunning, and not the kind of play that you saw very often. When he took advantage of the situation further by launching a new attack through the sand, the gym leader actually grinned as his Magnemite was buried in rocks yet again. It was a great use of his Rockruffs natural abilities, and well deserving of praise. Too bad he wasn't the type to give it. "Gyro Ball again, Magnemite." He called out. "And then use Mirror Shot."The familiar humming started up once again as his Pokémon rotated at high speed to blast itself out of the pile of rocks enveloping it. The rotation looked more sluggish this time, though. More forced. Sure enough, it seemed like the enemies attacks were finally starting to leave a mark. Magnemite wasn't through just yet though, and directed its side units forward again as it shot another blast of light energy at its opponent before hovering upwards again. It couldn't keep itself as high up anymore, but it was important to keep as much distance as possible. Both it and its leader knew that it didn't have the energy to fight in close combat. If Regal wanted to take the first round, that would be his best bet.

Regal Bastionxxxxxxx »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» "The human mind is like a parachute... Regal could feel his heart thumping in his chest as the smoke cleared and his opponent wobbled back up into the air. Harveys Magnemite finally seemed to be slowing down from their persistent attacks, which meant that they were in the home stretch now. He couldn't afford to get cocky, though. The last thing Terra needed was for him to slip up at the finish line. The Rockruff nimbly leapt out of the way of the incoming light blast, which opened up another opportunity to retaliate. Regal wasted no time in commanding his Pokémon to get in close again. Terra closed the gap once more, and the stage was set for the finale.
They started off with Rock Climb to create a new pillar of stone directly underneath their prey, launching the gym leaders Magnemite further up into the air and directly into the path of some of the floating Stealth Rock traps. The Rockruff then began climbing the pillar to complete their attack. As it reached the peak and leapt at its target, the duo switched things up by striking with a super effective Fire Fang instead of the usual claw attack. All of their previous attacks had been dropped on them from above, so Regal hoped that the surprise attack from below would give them the opening that they needed to finish the gym leaders Pokémon for good.

Clever Brat. Harveys Magnemite was too slow from the previous attacks to avoid the rock pillar from erupting underneath it. The unfortunate Pokémon crashed directly into the stone trap above it, and was too stunned from the impact to stop its opponent from nailing it with the super effective attack. Regal appeared to have saved this trump card for the finale, and it had paid off spectacularly. As the pillar retracted back into the earth, the gym leader noted with a frown that his Magnemite was officially down for the count. The scoreboard next to the battlefield dimmed his Pokémons picture from the display as it was returned into its ball, and the gym leader reached for another capsule to continue the match. "You've got a good head on your shoulders." He grumbled. "I'll give you that much. But let's see how you deal with my next Pokémon."Harvey tossed the ball forward, and his Skarmory spread its wings wide as it prepared for battle. The bird Pokémon was immediately assaulted by Regals Stealth Rock trap, and was understandably ticked off by the sudden attack. Glaring daggers at the two, the metallic bird cawed angrily and raked its talons menacingly on the battlefield, causing a few stray sparks to fly from the contact of metal on metal. Deciding that it was time for him to take the initiative, Harvey called for his Skarmory to attack. "Use Twister." He called. "Let's give them a taste of their own medicine."With another angry screech, the gym leaders Skarmory began flapping its powerful wings and whipped a powerful blast of wind at Regals Rockruff, complete with a healthy number of jagged rocks courtesy of its opponent. Not finished yet, Harvey called for a Steel Wing attack as well. His Pokémon was happy to oblige, and sailed towards its target through the storm to slam into it with its glowing white wings. Regal was about to find out that his Skamory was an entirely different beast than his Magnemite. It was much faster and way more aggressive in its fighting style. He would have to change tactics fast if he wanted to keep the lead he had earned.

Regal Bastionxxxxxxx »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» "The human mind is like a parachute... Regal pumped his fist in victory as Harvey returned his Magnemite into its ball. All of the odds had been stacked against him and Terra, but the duo had finally managed to pull off an upset and defeat the gym leaders Pokémon. The Rockruff looked quite pleased with itself, and couldn't help but wag its tail as it shared in its trainers enthusiasm. Unfortunately, Harvey cut their victory short as he sent out his next Pokémon. The gym leaders Skarmory looked all kinds of mean, and Terras Stealth Rock trap had done a spectacular job of pissing it off. They took the initiative with a powerul Twister attack, and Regal grit his teeth as his own tactics were used to send his Pokémon flying. As the angry bird approached for another strike, the trainer got his wits about him and began shouting commands.
"Dodge with Double Team!" He commanded just as the Skarmory brought its wing down. Their was a small cloud of dust kicked up from the impact, and when it cleared the steel type was being circled by a small pack of Rockruff. Apparently Terra wasn't done just yet. "Follow up with Fire Fang!"
All the copies of the rock type simultaneously wreathed their fangs with glowing hot flames before leaping at their avian enemy. Only one of the attacks was the real thing, but picking out the right one was easier said than done. Hopefully Harvey wouldn't manage to see through the attack before it connected.

"That's not going to work." Harvey commented at Regal's order to use double team. Skarmory's were known for having impeccable vision; no detail escapes their gaze. Skarmory picked up on where the Rockruff actually was immediately and it snapped it's head towards its' opponent in a very avian fashion. "Metal Sound." The chrome avian spread out its' wings as its' metal body glowed blue. a very sharp, shrieking sound began piercing the air as the bird scraped its' wings along each other in a harsh fashion. Shockwaves blasted towards the puppy in an attempt to knock it off balance and halt its' attack. "Keep up the pressure with Fury Attack." The Skarmory lunged forward thrusting its' beak like a spear repeatedly into the face of its' opponent; never letting up for a second. Battles are all about efficiency and conservation of resources. Pokemon have a finite amount of energy and stamina, and Skarmory is already behind this trainer's next Pokemon. I need to finish off this Rockruff as quickly as possible. Knowing this trainer, he has some trick up his sleeve or his next Pokemon will have some sort of advantage. How are you going to deal with this? Harvey was actually curious. Most trainers that took on his gym were very one dimensional in their strategies, but Regal showed true potential as a Pokemon handler. He was starting to get excited about what might happen next.

Regal Bastionxxxxxxx »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» "The human mind is like a parachute... Regals eyes widened in horror as he realized his mistake way too late. He should have scanned the Skarmory the second its trainer sent it out instead of jumping straight into the battle. Instead, the bird Pokémon saw through the Double Team technique and punished its opponent accordingly with a devastating Metal Sound. He tried to counter it by having Terra use Howl, but the attempt was futile. The puppy Pokémon was knocked back from the sound blast and was immediately set upon by the Skarmory once again, this time in the form of a Fury Attack. It valiantly tried to shield itself with the pointed stones on its collar, but once again its attempts were in vain. By the time the assault was over, the Rockruff was lying on its side with swirls in its eyes. The scoreboard marked the loss and the trainer burned with shame as he returned his Pokémon into its ball.
"You were incredible out there." He whispered softly as clipped the capsule back onto his belt. "You can take it easy now. Nova and I will handle the rest."
And with that, he tossed his second Pokéball forward and released Nova into the battle. The flame Pokémon, angered by the defeat of its comrade and eager to test its strength against a powerful opponent, announced its arrival by loosing a small blast of bluish-white flames into the air and swished its long tail menacingly.
"Let's start out strong, Nova." The trainer commanded. "Use Flamethrower."

Harvey sighed. "Agility." He's sticking with type advantage at least. Although a full, frontal attack isn't really going to cut it at this stage. He's got potential, but maybe he's letting himself get rattled. Show me that you can keep your composure kid. Skarmory darted forward and barreled towards the lizard in a swift leap. As she came nose to nose with the flamethrower, she slid out of sight and reappeared ten feet behind her foe. "Skarmory are pretty quick on their feet. You're going to have to figure out a way to hinder her movement if you want your attacks to hit. Metal Claw." The steel bird's claws began to glow with a silver energy as it extended, to make her talons longer than they were before. Then, she leapt forward raking them towards Charmeleon in a very violent fashion. Harvey wanted to see how Regal would react to an opponent that was hard to pin down. Part of being a good trainer was adapting to a new situation, and figuring out how to pull a victory out of an apparent defeat. Skarmory was definitely faster than her opponent, but the battle was by no means over. There was still plenty of opportunity for Regal to succeed. He just had to think outside of the box.

Regal Bastionxxxxxxx »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» "The human mind is like a parachute... Using its speed to overwhelm them was going to be tougher to pull off against Nova, since this time Regal was prepared for it. As the Skarmory began hacking away with Metal Claw, the trainer commanded his Pokémon to counter with the same, locking the two into a violent confrontation. The steel bird was landing more hits thanks to its speed boost, but the Charmeleon wasn't giving an inch as it slashed eagerly with its powerful claws. Being in close combat gave them plenty of opportunities for new attack combinations however, and Regal was eager to use them.
"Use Scary Face!" He bellowed. "Then Flame Burst with your tail!"
Glaring menacingly into its opponents eyes, the flame Pokémon maneuvered its tail underneath Harveys Skarmory and launched a medium sized fireball with gusto. The attack would have been much stronger if it came from its maw, but Regal knew that the gym leader would be expecting that and therefore be focusing less on the Charmeleons lower body. Combined with the sudden loss of their agility boost, he hoped that the surprise attack would help Nova gain some ground.

Harvey watched as the two Pokemon exchanged blows. It wasn't going to end well for Regal if it dragged on. Skarmory's metal body was much better suited for a brawl than the squishy flesh of Regal's Charmeleon. But what happened next surprised the gym leader. The lizard's gaze managed to startle Skarmory long enough for his attack to hit true. Steel types were not known for their great defense against fire, and the avian Pokemon reeled back from the sudden attack. Impressive. He knows his Pokemon well. If this drags on, I will definitely be at the disadvantage. Skarmory doesn't have much in the way of ranged attacks. So I guess we'll have to switch up our tactics. With Skarmory on her heels, Harvey knew that an all out brawl would be a swift way to lose the battle. But he too, knew what Regal's Pokemon was capable of. He had faced many in his time as a gym leader. So he knew all too well that Regal's Charmeleon had the upper hand when it came to ranged combat. So Skarmory's only chance was to always be moving, "Skarmory, Autotomize."At the gym leader's command, the metal bird began to shake her wings vigorously. As she did, many of her feathers fell to the ground around her, and she shuddered with a new energy. By shedding some weight, she had once again, increased her speed radically. "Now Fly, and use Metal Wing." The Skarmory flapped her, now lighter, wings and took off into the sky around her opponent. The plan was to never stop, using hit and run tactics to whittle down her opponent until they couldn't fight back. She couldn't take the flames, but if they never hit, then she wouldn't get damaged. Her wings glowed white as she descended against her opponent in an attempt clip him. But Harvey wasn't done yet. "Double Team." As Skarmory's image doubled multiple times, Harvey thought to himself, You're not the only one that can pull that move kid.

Regal Bastionxxxxxxx »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» "The human mind is like a parachute... Regal allowed himself a quick smile as Novas Flame Burst made contact with Harveys Skarmory. A few more blasts like that and that first badge would be theirs. Of course, he didn't expect the gym leader to make it easy for him. Sure enough, the bird Pokémon shed its feathers to pump itself up again, causing his Charmeleon to jump out of the way of the deadly projectiles before getting slammed by its opponent. Regal didn't want to admit it, but the gym leaders Skarmory was even faster now than before. Even if they were able to pick it out from the multiple streaks of silver zooming through the air, he didn't think they would be able to hit it.
He switched to hit and run tactics because he was afraid of Novas flames. That means they're still my best weapon. He reasoned. And if I can't pin it down for another one on one confrontation, then I'll just have to use his own tactics against him.
"Dig, Nova! Then Fire Spin! Keep going and light up the sky! Don't worry about aiming!"
It was simple, but practical. By hiding underground, Nova would be able to avoid its opponents speedy attacks. Fire Spin wasn't the most powerful move in their arsenal, but the flames would swirl and spread around the battlefield until its opponent ran out of room to fly. With every burst of scarlet flames, Regal could also feel the temperature of the room slowly increase, which he knew would affect the steel type Skarmory negatively. Quantity over quality. The Double Team afterimages were dissipating one after another as the spouts of flame continued as well, though Regal still couldn't discern the real thing. It would happen eventually, though. And when it did, they would be ready.

Harvey raised his eyebrows as Regal's Charmeleon dug under the floor on the battlefield. He had seen similar tactics before, but it was rare on a fire type. As flames started sprouting around the battlefield, the gym leader let out an exasperated sigh. Skarmory had no way to effectively attack her opponent without leaving herself open for massive repercussions. Rubbing his face with his hand, Harvey took a cigarette from his pocket and lit it. He was finished with this battle, and just wanted to get back to work. Regal's new tactic, while a bit over the top, was enough for the gym leader to concede. All that fire had to be exhausting Regal's Pokemon, and Harvey didn't feel like getting in to a war of attrition with the trainer. As he took a drag, he recalled his Pokemon and spoke to Regal. "Enough. Call back your Pokemon before you burn out my air conditioning. Look, you got the badge; just be careful about using all-out tactics in the future. It worked out fine here, but in the future you might not be so lucky. Your Pokemon don't have unlimited stamina, and forcing your Charmeleon to use all this fire is sure to tire it out quickly. You forced the battle into a stamina standoff, and it might not turn out in your favor. Keep that in mind."Harvey spoke into the watch on his wrist, and after five minutes, the door opened, revealing a massive metal mass with four limbs. It floated over to Harvey and he retrieved three items from the creature. The gym leader thanked his partner and set the three items on a side table against the wall. "Those are for you. They're my badge, the Steelium Z, and the TM Smart Strike. Use them how you want. Metagross will show you out. Congratulations." With that, Harvey disappeared back into his workshop. He had multitudes of projects that needed his attention, and he didn't want to use up any more time on his gym leader duties. He was sure a capable trainer like Regal could figure out what to do without hand holding.

Regal Bastionxxxxxxx »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» "The human mind is like a parachute... Regal couldn't quite believe it when Harvey decided to call it quits and return his Skarmory. It was a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. Listening patiently to the gym leaders lecture, the trainer had to concede that the older man definitely had a point about his choice of battle tactics. He had felt cornered by his opponents speed, and chosen a large scale attack to compensate. It had worked this time, but Regal had to agree that it had been reckless. Still, he and his team had secured their victory and won their first badge of eight, marking their professional debut in the region. Their spoils also included a new TM and a rare battle item that Regal had only read about before: A Z Crystal. Thanking Harvey for his time, the trainer allowed himself to be escorted out by the gym leaders Metagross, which he couldn't resist scanning with his Pokédex.
Once outside, the trainer took out his Pokégear so that he could contact his grandfather and tell him the good news. The old man was pretty much the only family that Regal could honestly claim to have a real relationship with, and he had learned pretty much everything he knew from him as well. When the time had come for him to stand up for himself and leave home, his grandfather had been more than supportive. The Pokégear he was calling him on now was actually an outdated model the old timer had used during his own trainer days, personally repaired and updated to communicate with the more advanced technologies of today. How he had known to have it ready and waiting for his grandson, he would never know.
They kept their conversation short so as not to arouse the suspicion of their other family, but Regals grandfather was delighted to hear about the young mans exploits and proud that his grandson had already secured his first gym badge within a week of becoming a Pokémon trainer. He stressed to him that the battles would only get more difficult from there, but the older man was confident that Regal was more than up to the task. Happy for the praise, the trainer thanked his grandfather for his kind words and promised to call him back soon with more good news. For now though, it was off to the Pokémon Center to heal up his team and celebrate their win.
