"Yeah, ridiculous," Harrison agreed sarcastically. "Why the hell would anyone want those things?"
Harrison leaned forward, squinting.
"What exactly kind of home are you making without all that s**t, the Playboy Mansion?"

"You are being sarcastic." Lawr said serenely, obviously somewhat drunk. "I can tell because of the way you said that, but I don't know. I genuinely do not know. Not even a little bit. I like lots of sex, lots of partners, lots of variety and a great deal of emotion around me. I don't have the capacity to maintain their emotional needs so it seems most sensible they would help support each others. It turns out that's not sensible."
He shrugged, flinching away from the other man a little as if he was being yelled at rather than challenged and there was something of Mikael in the way he looked stricken, staring off into the middle distance. Harrison might as well have been questioning sandcastle choices. "And I don't know. I don't know what kind of home I'm making. I'm just trying."

"That's because you don't get with someone on account of wanting other folks. You get with someone on account of wanting them. I mean, it'd be like if someone swapped out one of your roommates with a random guy and expecting you to be happy with it. Like, this is what you wanted, right?"
Fidelity was not rocket science.

"Sometimes people get together out of a mutual desire to have certain needs met." he said. "And I do want them. Just...all of them. I'd rather not have to choose." he shrugged casually. "However, there seem to be a lot of misunderstandings develop around that sort of thing."
"But as far as swaps I suppose I would cope with it. It wouldn't be ideal though. I like Rodney, Melvin and Horace as they are, with all the problems and complications."

"Well, lotta people can't cope with it. Lotta people get distressed at it. And it's not as easy as replacement. It's just that person, not there."
Harrison had a lot of strong feelings about it.
"But maybe some folks are replaceable. Or discardable. To some other folks."
Harrison was only half talking about Lawrence's issues at this point.

"I noticed." he said. "That was part of what happened with Horace. He wanted my full attention, devotion and love and I told him I couldn't give him the sort of love he wanted." he put the empty glass down on the table and took a sip of water. "Ended up having to let him walk away for his own sake. Didn't want to! Had to. And no, you don't replace people, just find other ways to fill voids."
He squinted at Harrison. "I've had a bit to drink but I think you are talking about Jordan again. Look, I don't discard people. I'm honest now as best I can be about who or what I am. I can't do monogamy, I can't. I don't lie to people about that."

"There's a difference between monogamy and fidelity. I didn't say ******** monogamy. Although maybe I should have stuck with monogamy from the start," Harrison returned miserably.
"All I'm saying is you can't expect everybody to be happy with your little needs swapping arrangement. Though maybe Melvin is. I think he and Rin never wanted to get married. Are you and Rodney, uh...? Are Melvin and Rodney...?"

"Fidelity." Lawrence repeated as if this would explain everything about the meaning of the word. As far as he was aware it simply meant clarity. "Though I will admit you seem better suited to monogamy than whatever it was that caused the whole mess between you all. I am simply not. I can be faithful to someone in ways which are not sexual. I support Melvin as best I can while he is around and I do what I can to try to care for Rodney. Horace doesn't let me very close any longer but I try to be faithful in ways to him too, even though we are no longer together in the same way."
He looked scandalised at the idea of Rodney and Melvin though. "No! Absolutely not." he said shaking his head. "No way. Melvin and Rodney that's ridiculous. No. And I have not..Rodney has never. No. He just lives there. He's too pure for any of us really."

"Has never, huh?" Harrison asked. "So you aren't affixing your considerable attention on Mr. Not Interested?"
Harrison sighed.
"Yeah. I mean. I said from the start I didn't want some kind of open door policy on s**t. It was the three of us but it was just the three of us. ...And now it's just the two of us. And whatever Jordan is deciding to do. ...It's his life."

Lawrence squirmed somewhat uncomfortably at such a direct question about Rodney and emphatically shook his head. “No.” he said. “I mean, he has my attention but not in any ulterior or sexual fashion.” And because the alcohol made it easier to talk he amended. “Well I mean, maybe in the beginning it was about defiling innocence and seducing someone who thought they were above seduction and winning some sort of victory. But it’s all gone a little off the tracks. I respect his resilience and how hard he holds onto his morals. I respect him.” He shook his head.
“I’m not saying I’m a saint or able to respect people property either and I know you are aware of that. We just found a resolution where there are certain boundaries clearly drawn and where my fantasies and affectionate harmless contact are not restricted simply everything else which might. Compromise! Like a real relationship almost ha ha ha. Though in all seriousness I wouldn’t even if I could, Rodney has aspirations of a family someday, a family with children. I would not take that naïve hope from him because Famine decided to infest me with a disease. Right now my acceptable pool of individuals is Melvin and Horace and Horace isn’t really speaking to me.”
He gave Harrison an encouraging sort of smile. “The two of you seem happy enough, Rep and you I mean. Jordan also seems happy enough for his part, even if he is taking advantage of kind people by leading them on and then cruelly rejecting them at the last minute still. But if that’s what he enjoys then who am I to stop him?”

"Real relationship, huh? That's pretty goopy, even for you." Harrison raised an eyebrow. "So, Melvin? Far be it for me to project any s**t, but sounds a lot like monogamy, there."
Harrison shrugged.
"Me and Rep are happy. Don't know about Jordan. ...I don't think he is, if I had to guess. But he holds his cards kinda close to his chest."
Harrison leaned uncomfortably on the counter.
"It's different, in Blue Kingdom. He's different. ...Loyal to me, above everything else. That place...it's just, I dunno," he frowned, then ran his hand through his hair and sighed, "******** embarrassing. It was...kinda a product of some wish-fulfillment from an Ancient. Only...I dunno. I dunno why it's like it is. It...if it's your wishes, right, it should be a nice place. Without all the crime and uh, hurting people. And...I'm sorry you got dragged into it."

Lawrence shook his head. "I'm not trying to be sentimental." he said. "It just seems more like conventional relationships is all. And I don't know about monogamy. I'd still sleep with almost anyone else who offered, just not immediate people whose lives I could ruin. I don't know if incidental monogamy actually counts." He shrugged his shoulders.
He looked curious about Jordan, not sure what to make of what he'd heard and seen of the other man. On one hand there was something about him which made Lawrence wonder if he was capable of the distance in a relationship he valued, while on the other this was counteracted by the fact he'd been in what seemed to be a very intimate and demanding one previously.
Talking about blue kingdom made him grin, partially due to the alcohol partially due to the apology he was getting from Harrison. The other version of himself would delight in being apologised to for having to follow the Boss and would treasure it, he knew.
"It's fine." he said. "That other version of me seems to have some things figured out that I would not have solved in the same way. And to me nice is boring. Nice is dull, nice is tedious. I leave when things get nice, I like a challenge, a scam and some action. It's not half bad, when it boils down to it, though if I may say so your other half in that world is an absolute heel."

"To me, I don't guess nice is...realistic. You don't go up in the world without somebody else getting pushed under."
Harrison wasn't a restless guy, exactly, but then again things around the island were rarely boring.
"That's because he isn't all me, exactly. He's me plus uh, some Ancient influences. Got the authoritative s**t hardwired. He's a King. I'm just a guy."

"I don't need realistic I suppose, I have plenty of it already. It's the fantastic and emotional which is useful to me. Perhaps I don't think that anything is capable of living a whole life of niceness without taking an enormous amount of damage themselves, more than I could or would ever endure, but it doesn't mean I won't watch in awe as they try and do what I can to nudge them pleasantly along." he shrugged. "Maybe they can be shielded in a way or at least have the worst of what is coming to them averted, if not it would still be interesting and entertaining. I would rather keep fascinating company than be bored."
His eyebrow was raised again in confusion. "Oh another ancient?" he asked. "I suppose it makes sense that something outside of our world would be the thing that exerted so much power on dreams. I assume Wonderland was the same." he smirked. "The other you is much more intimidating than you are, perhaps you could take some authoritative notes from your dreams."
