Shun furrowed his brow as that sounded incredibly unpleasant. Not just the initial flame itself, but the effect it left behind on Mercer. That scarring must make going to the doctor a little... awkward, if his body temperature wasn't indicator enough that something weird was going on. "That is rather unfortunate. I wonder if there is any way to heal that."His guess was there probably was. Or if there was, it most likely was incredibly difficult. "I also have to ask... While this does not affect me, really, I must wonder... What happens should you die on the other side?"The Sergeant guessed it just meant that you died and your body was now stuck in Other Ashdown for who knows how long. But there was some sense of concern for whether the magic in the other place would cause some... weird things to occur with the corpse. Were things such as the undead really possible now? A part of him couldn't believe he was actually wondering this as a possibility.

"There may be, I've not found it yet but I've not necessarily had time to look. As it stands, it -" Jeremiah paused, shaking his head. Really, it was not his place to talk about the fact that Algie could, in most cases, ease the chill if not the pain because of his hands. Except that that was a personal note and not something that needed to be talked about openly. His thumb brushed against the ring on his wedding finger. "It's manageable, just requires rest after incidents like Blackfriars." Or the mansion where Autumn had been taken too. "As we have not had anyone die on the other side, I can't answer that question. I could ask and find out, I'm sure, but ... The goal here is that no one dies, no one fails, and whatever needs to happen gets done. I loathe being vague but in this, there's little else besides flooding you with information that may put you in more danger than help you." The more you know, the sooner you die.

Shun slowly nodded at Jeremiah. That didn't seem as much of a problem, though the constant chill did seem somewhat of an inconvenience. It must be awful during the winter, though. His expression darkened a bit when he answered his question regarding death. "Of course, the ideal would be that no one dies..." he said. And he supposed it was good that no one had succumbed on the other side yet. But eventually someone was going to die, especially if it was as dangerous as he was led to believe. "Would the need to be vague still stand if I were able to cross over?" he asked. He wasn't sure how universal the danger was, but he couldn't help but wonder just what this dangerous knowledge was.

"It's the ideal, not the expectation." Which was a dark, bitter truth but also how Jeremiah saw the matter. He knew that- Well, Shun probably did not need to be made aware of that, not yet. "In some ways? Yes. Other ways? No. It's not a deliberate vagueness, just that there are parts of this that are harder to swallow when you've not been completely pulled in by it." Jeremiah shook his head. "If you have not already guessed, other ashdown changes you whether you like it or not, and some of the things to tell are easier to explain if you've been touched." Like finding out that your eyes were no longer quite the same. "You can ask me whatever you want, I'll endeavor to answer it. I just cannot promise that it'll always be what you want to hear."

Shun lightly folded his arms over his chest, lightly tapping his fingers as he did so. "That is why we are here, are we not? The truth is rarely ever pretty," he replied. He tilted his head in thought, looking over Jeremiah. There was a mild sense of frustration, but at the same time it made sense. Some things were difficult to explain without the other party having some sense of experience, "Change... how? Other than receiving frosty scars or becoming rather furry on the full moon?"He hadn't seen Autumn with her new horns yet. Or Mercer's night eyes.

"It is but some truths are darker than others." Like the fact that they had lived and failed and died before. That there was every chance it could happen again. Jeremiah's lips pressed together into a thin line when Shun asked how. "Do you have your phone with you? It's relevant." Not everyone carried their phones with them all the time.

Shun raised his brow, then pulled his phone from his pocket. He was careful to not jostle the cat on his lap too much, not really wishing to disturb the napping feline. He held up the device, half-offering it in case Jeremiah needed it for whatever reason, "...Now what?"

Hellbine's ear flicked back at the jostling, head raising with a yawn and then lowering. Yeah, the people were doing people things. Not interested. A hand was held up to show he did not need it. "Snap a picture of my face - my eyes - with the flash on. Closer is likely better." His head was tilted so that Shun could do so. The moment he did, the moment the photo was taken, the younger detective would see it. Especially given that it was getting closer to sunset and the sky darkening. Jeremiah's eyes did not have a red-eye tint to the pupil, which should have been there, but instead his eyes (the iris and the pupil) reflected back a luminescent yellow with a blue edge to them.

Shun hesitated at that, but he went ahead and brought up the camera. He went ahead and snapped a picture of Mercer's face with the flash on. And he certainly did see it immediately. Furrowing his brow, he stared at the image on his phone, which did show the older detective. But his eyes appeared to be glowing. "What the ********, he stared back up at Jeremiah.
"Your eyes..."

"When I say it changes you, I mean physically as well." Jeremiah rubbed at his eyes a bit, blinking rapidly a few times. His eyes were normal with regular light, that same blue-green. "They weren't like this a week ago." He was still adjusting to the change. "The way my eyes see things was already different than others but now they look different as well." A sigh. "It's, as far as I can tell, much like how a cat's eyes take in light and reflect it back to be able to see." Which also meant that, yes, he could see in the dark. That had already been tested. Worse that he wondered if someone cut open his eyes if they would look like- No, that was not a thought he needed.

That was a little disconcerting to hear. "I suppose being able to see like that would be useful, but the physical change is a bit alarming," he admitted. If anyone happened to run into the guy at night, they could potentially freak out. But at the same time, it at least wasn't as big of a change as if his skin had turned blue for whatever reason. "Are these changes always on the smaller scale? Or is the possibility of barely looking human anymore there?" Shun asked with a furrowed brow.

"I have no idea, I'd have to ask." Jeremiah shook his head, eyes focusing on the small cat that was still asleep in Shun's lap. "It's very possible that the further one becomes entrenched in this, in other ashdown, that they will find themselves less and less human." It was a worry, a valid concern. "Most of the things I've experienced and seen have been but you saw what was going on at Blackfriars. Not all of these changes are small scale." There was that wry look again. "... and when magic exists it opens the door for practically anything."

Certainly, the werefolk did not seem very human during their transformations. But given that he had seen Lucas and Eve since that night, Shun knew those states weren't permanent. At least they weren't right now. The thing with Jeremiah's eyes seemed to be more of a persistent thing to have. "That is what worries me. I have no real idea of what is possible or impossible any longer. Criminals, you can predict to some degree. I cannot think of any way of how to predict anything when it comes to magic, however," he mumbled. That thought bothered him.

"You can't," Jeremiah gave a shrug of his shoulders, "it is one of the most frustrating aspects of this entire thing. The answers lead to more questions, the questions may not even be answered, and the more you fight against it? The more you're likely to have it fight back against you." A hand was raked through his hair. "I've been working Ashdown for years, Kuroda, imagine my surprise when I realized just how much I had missed. It's all there, under the surface, and it's just been waiting. Not that it's always been this active."

That sounded incredibly frustrating indeed. "Makes me wonder what I have been missing in New York," he mumbled. He had lived there his entire life prior to his move to Ashdown. Shun wasn't sure if there were other places in the world where the lines between this realm and the other were... blurred. "Has anyone tried to leave the boundaries of this town... on the other side?"
