He smiled back to her, but had to hold it as she whispered her concern to him. He wanted to comment, but so many people around would be airing dirty laundry openly, and he didn't even like doing that metaphorically.
"That's very kind of you." He said back to her, as if he was commenting on the offer for food. He wasn't sure why America was in guard with Lawr when in came to anyone else considering plenty of younger hunters broadcasted their desires to have sex or that they had on Twitter. Part of him bitterly wanted to say that, seeing as Horace was here first, as should have taken it to him.
It would be a nice, repressed beach party.
Or you could explode for once. That's always fun.
He reached down a moment to pop the cooler and pick out a piece of ice before walking over to Jan and Melody. She did look young, but so did many hunters, and he doubted they could do much ope only in front of a crowd. There was also the fact he never knew Jan to force himself upon someone. Most wanted it.
Not wanting to make presumptions, he moved over to the two and knelt down. "Hate to interrupt." In some ways. "..but America wants to know if you wanna hot dog or burger and in what way if a burger."
It was an innocent opening to come over.
With the ice melted and his bare hand chill and drippin wet, he reached over to set his hand on the back of Jan's bare neck in what seemed like a friendly gesture.. "You should come to and eat something too."

When Caroline leaned in to nudge him, Harvard pinched her stealthily on the waist, keeping an impassive face the entire time. It was weird for him to be out and about with someone as a 'couple' - something he hadn't done in a very long time, too used to people content to be bed partners until they both moved on. "I would like a house - but I think I'd wait until I know I can better take care of it." The idea of living in a house, fairly unprotected, when he himself was still green? No thank you. If he ever did live somewhere with other people, Harvard needed to make sure he could protect those people first. "I heard it's still dangerous." Speaking of danger, there were a few things he wanted to talk to Caroline about; if he could pull her away. He nodded to Horace as he came up, offering him a towel. The hunter - god, it was hard not to classify all these kids as trainees - he'd met briefly before. Horace's freidn got a cursory look and a smile of hello. And then Melvin arrived bearing vegetables. "Vegetables to the cookout - I suppose we can't all subsist on meat." He didn't sound particularly enthused about them.

Off to the side and making her way slowly was Stormy, a tan and floral printed ghost whose shorts were all but swallowed up by the light cardigan; but then, a lot of things seemed large on her small figure. Her hands were clasped before her as she shyly approached. At the very least Caroline and Harvard were easy to spot--
A hand touched her shoulder, and she jumped.
"Oh, sawry, honey." Dawson gave an apologetic smile. He looked fresh from work judging by the visible sweat marks around his collar and armpits. "Jus' saw ya lagging behind. You ready t'party?"
Stormy blinked at him. "Um..." Without finishing the thought, she turned and awkwardly continued on her way.
Dawson tilted his head slightly, but eh. Wasn't the weirdest behavior he'd seen.
"Nice thing goin' here!" he hailed as he approached the grill, lifting his cap and fanning himself, scanning those gathered. Ah boy. Melting pot of drama waiting to happen. "You want I should take over, Meri? The grill, she calls t'me~" Or at least to his stomach.

Melvin coming over to join Melody and him was met with a bright keen smile. "Oh Melviiiin." he crooned as the other man made his way towards them.
He was smugly in the middle of pre-empting being asked about food "I'll pass I'm not at all hungry I'll just pa-" when Melvin's icy hands reached his neck. "-ARGH"
What had started as a word turned into something between a shriek and a yelp and he leapt to his feet like a startled cat, moving away from Melody and Melvin both, rubbing his neck and looking wild eyed and scandalised.
"Don't DO that. You could have given me a heart attack!" he pointed sulkily in the direction of the barbecue. "And I am not eating that rubbish."

"Got to say, it's a comfort to hear someone who's been here a while saying that." That relief washed over her expression. "Really important. I agree." She left her to the food and the newcomers then, understanding of the positions of those who gave life to a party - and out came a squeal that seemed entirely out of place. By the time she reached to retaliate by smacking Harvard's hand away, it was gone, and she pursed her lips in acceptance of temporary defeat. "Oh, wait 'til you can take care of it? That sounds responsible." The words didn't match with her playful 'I know what you just did' look. "Anyway, we did just fine as feeble little humans against monsters, much stronger monsters, because we stuck together. So just...you know. Don't go alone. But I'm officially throwing Rule Thirteen out now, even if it's responsible, and Corey's gonna have to come back herself if she wants to reinstate it." The sly look disappeared as she finally glanced at the others, offering a cheerful wave to the unfamiliar girl, to Oliver...to Horace, which was where she stopped. It was like looking at a half-drowned kitten (arguably worse, as kittens did not wear glasses covered in water and residue from the sea), and the sight almost made her want to cry. A careful line existed between babying and helping, but she'd chance it for the possibility that touching him would work like Lawrence Repellant on him. " Horace!" Like greeting an old friend. "Nice to get to really see you. Here, so you can say the same--" She reached to pluck off his glasses to clean them with the skirt of her dress, not wanting to scratch them. After replacing them, she intercepted the towel to drop it across his shoulders and fluff-dry him like he was a kitten after all. So much for avoiding the babying. Her warm smile parted for her to say something to him, stopping short when she glimpsed Stormy actually here. Visibly brightening, she mouthed a silent 'hi', hoping to not draw more attention to her than she could handle.

*Sali said okay to skip her.
He knew there looking up at Jan as he jumped in his skin, knowing cold and water were not his favorite things. "Oh come now. It's just a little water on the beach. You can't be the only one getting wet here." He said, looking at Jan a moment and glancing down at Melody's back before looking back up.
"It's good to cool down."
Rising up, he brushed sand off his knees. "Don't insult someone being charitable and helping the host with their party." He said, warning the other man about how he was making himself look bad in front of others and Melody. "America decided to offer these things. Even if you don't like it and eat something at home, don't insult it."
Free of sand, he dusted off his hands before walking over. "You're too much of a tenacious person to be done in by a heart attack anyways." He moved closer still, setting a hand on his shoulder as he leaned in and whispered. "A bit young, and in public?"
Did he like the drama despite saying how much he didn't favor Horace's teenage emotions? Did he experience jealousy or enjoyed a sort of game in front of others he once and still was with or was he simply oblivious to it all?

Lawrence did not take well to being humiliated in public. This was an understatement. In fact, the only thing which stopped him from summoning his claws then and there and lunging towards the other man was the gathered crowd and the individuals in it. It was obvious though that his mood was not light or friendly simply by the marked change in his eyes, colder and more fixed in their stare behind a relaxed mask of expression.
He undid his scarf, checked it was intact and carefully one handed knotted it again, all the while standing completely rigid, even his gestures strangely robotic. "I will insult unhealthy junk food if I so please." he said, his tone brusque.
Everything about the thin, small man radiated utmost outrage and offense as Melvin went on to imply that he was doing something crass in public, clenching his hand as the third hand on his watch ticked over to murder.
He lowered his own voice to what was almost a growl and snapped. "A bit young for what? A bit young in comparison. to. what?" And as he stared at Melvin, expression fixed, everything about his posture tensed. The only thing about him that moved was his chest as he breathed.

He narrowed his eyes back. Jan was pissed and he understood to some degree why, but he'd rather have it directed at him than to have it explode from others and cause a scene.
"The Bar-B-Queing ringleader who just loves tarnishing your good name will cause you trouble and a scene. And you said yourself Horace is unpredictable. Do you really want either one of them to start something? I only wanted to offer you a warning by outside observation, innocent or otherwise, but if you want to continue then by all means. I don't know what interest you after all."
He pulled back now, turning.
"I brought your towel and bottled water in my bag." He said in a normal tone as if everything was fine.

"I was fine until you had to cause a scene." Lawr said, crossing his arms, furiously, still offended at the implication he was somehow old. Horace and America weren't the problem today, both had been civil and had not been trying to ruin his fun and interfere with his conversations.
"Nice to see you trust me pardner." he snarled at the other man's back at a normal volume.
He didn't trust himself to go back to helping Melody with her sunscreen, giving her an apologetic look.
"Sorry about that, I didn't expect to get startled like that."

Melody opened her eyes and debated on how to respond. She was very capable of applying lotion to her front on her own but... She did not want to decline help she was given. It might insult him or make what was perfectly innocent seem less so.
She moved to sit up and suddenly the man she'd inquired about was approaching them. Lawr sounded pleased. She started to smile and greet him but then???
It appears she missed something. Lawr sounded completely unhappy about his presence while Melvin remained calm.
Melody carefully stood up, looking concerned for all but a moment until the discussion of food came up again. "I'm famished," she sounded almost apologetic. Lawr's comment that he had simply been startled was comforting enough and she accepted that explanation.
She resumed smiling at Melvin and gently held her hand out to him palm down, "It's a pleasure to meet a friend." Although she suspected more than that in Lawr's case based on the talking and touching alone. She tried not to pry too deeply in her own mind.

He sighed before raising a brow. "Partner?" What was that about? "I never said I didn't. Now you're making a scene."
He smiled to Melody but looked at his bare hand a moment and refrained from taking her hand. "My hand is a bit wet or else I'd shake your hand. It's a pleasure to meet you. Thank you for arranging this. Sorry for intruding on you two. Enjoy yourselves."
He walked past Jan. "You have fun then." He said deciding that if he wanted to make this about a trust thing, then that was on him.
He walked past them and headed back to the group. "I'm sorry. It seems Melody is coming over but I didn't get what she wanted." Or what she was after.
"Jan isn't hungry." As usual.
He looked over to them. "I'm sorry. I haven't met all of you. I'm Melvin Wood. Runic tech in the Life department. " He gave a curt turn of his chin to them, hands at his side. His gloves were in his bag and he felt awkward without them on.

Whatever game the pale man had been playing had had a temporary spanner thrown in it, not to mention the bucket of not so metaphorical ice water thrown over his libido. He gave Melvin a similarly icy look for his boldness and for just a moment was inclined to drive in the dagger of knowledge he had reserved for so long for when he would need to terminate their relationship for Melvin's own sake.
No, that idle destruction would wait for now at least.
He gestured kindly to the barbeque for Melody. "If you are hungry, don't let my pickiness stop you from eating. I think I'll go get my bottle of water."
And without waiting for her answer he made his way to Melvin's bag, anything as an excuse to put some distance from them temporarily. In his head Butch was a snarling and giddying ball of brutality, flashing horrendous images of gore and depravity in some attempt to make him act and sate both of their needs for violence or whatever equivalent sin came close to hand.
Retrieving the bottle he slipped off his shoes and socks, leaving them by Melvin's things and made his way silently down to the water, standing only close enough to reach the shallowest water as it rushed the shore. He took a deep breath and exhaled but it didn't exhale the pent up restlessness that rattled at his ribs and made his skin itch.

Melody watched as Melvin left and then shortly after, Lawrence as well. She gave Lawrence a frown. He clearly decided he wanted to be alone, as Horace had moments ago. She might have been pouting just as hard now, if not harder. But she let him go without verbal complaint. She finished applying sunscreen to the front of her arms, legs, collar bone, and anything else that may become exposed to too much sun. She idly wondered if Hunters could even acquire skin cancer. She did not wish to test this theory.
She took a bottle of water out of her bag and meticulously washed the sunscreen from her hands.
Once she felt prepared for eating, she then approached the group curiously. She smiled brightly at the group as if nothing had ever happened.
"Greetings everyone. My name is Melody, Melody Bell," she gave a flourish of a curtsy to the growing crowd as a whole. "America," her brown eyes scanned the barbecue in front of the woman curiously. "Whatever you are making smells so good."

"I am nothing if not responsible - the soul of it, of course." His smirk said otherwise, thoroughly satisfied with her yelp of surprise. While it was true that Harvard did lean towards responsibility, it was a possessive kind and Caroline made him a little... intense about it, in some ways. Regardless of how well they'd done in Delta (that is, surviving), he wasn't keen on staying in some house yet. Having a job fraught with danger was one thing, but to have to deal with it in the house as well...? The dorms seemed marginally safer. As if in silent apology, his hand caught around her waist again, smoothing over where he'd previously pinched her. "Hmmm, what was rule 13 again?" Harvard remembered the rules but not the numbers the corresponded to - and Corey had had so many. Then Caroline positively leapt at Horace, her bright smile as fussing nature reminding Harvard of a flitting bird. Sometime, he would need her to tell him exactly what was going on there. It was tied to Lawrence, he gathered, but he hadn't been paying enough attention to Twitter to figure it out. "Don't smother him, Caroline. Hi, I'm Dr. Falls - seen you before, of course, in the kitchen. Thank you for the cake." Then he caught sight of Stormy and his smile warmed further. "Speaking of which, there's the cake recipient herself. Hello, Stormy."

Horace reached out to take the towel when suddenly Caroline grabbed his glasses and began to fuss over him. He smiled; it was kind of nice, in a way. "Thanks." He debating handing the now-wet towel back to Harvard, but paused... who would want a damp towel back? His waffling was interrupted by Lawrence's shriek and Horace jerked, turning his head to look around. Melvin had down something to Lawrence and he tensed before reminding himself it had nothing to do with him. He was fine. He swallowed awkwardly. "Anyway, Oliver, these guys are alright, I think. America's making food. You want anything?" He watched as Harvard dipped over to grab a beer out of the cooler after introducing himself. "Can I get one?" Harvard shrugged and passed him another and he wrapped his hands about the cool bottle. It hadn't been in there very long, but it would do. Maybe it'd make him less jittery. "You sure you're old enough?" "Age doesn't matter on the island, Dr. Falls." He grinned and took a drink, looking around for Stormy and seeing Gretchen, he waved, and, oh - "Hey, Dawson - nice to see your face."
