Last Chance

The book is small and is a handmade story with hand-drawn illustrations that accompany the story itself.

The story centers around a lost wolf pup with black fur that was adopted by a family of cats.

The Other wolves were MUCH morE vicious, stronger, bigger thAn the pup. But the pup was not afraid.

The pup knew that if it made a Sound, the wolves would know that the pup was a cat and the wolves would kill the pup. If the pup staYed very quiet, the pup could kill each of the wolves in the pack oNe by One very sloWly and protect the cats. Then the pup could truly be a cat once again and return to it's family.

The pup approached the cats in secret, and tried to warm them about the attack. But no one would listen.

[The book looks unfinished as the story abruptly ends there and the rest of the pages in the book are blank.]

Defective

Hexxis had been compliant to any test administered and any physical examinations of her body. They had noted her injuries: healing cut on her cheek, multiple bruised ribs, bruising around the inhibitor around her neck as well as various bite marks and hickeys along her shoulders. She had healing bullet wounds in her shoulder and back of her leg, and a long deep but healing slash down her back, as well as multiple bruises and hickeys on her thighs. The doctors examining her also noted her new tattoos, a handful of small bird silhouettes on her left shoulder, as well as a fairly new tattoo of a dagger overlayed with a cracked moon that traced her spine down her back.

The doctors had noticed a bit of bruising beneath her eye patch and carefully looking over her medical files again. "Hexxis, is it okay if I touch your eye.. I know it says you don't like that, but you appear to be injured and I need to make sure the area isn't infected." She didn't answer and honestly hadn't moved as her gaze stayed fixated to the ground. He asked again but still no response. As he reached for it, she seemed to tense up and almost leaned away a bit. She darted her gaze away as if expecting to look at someone else, but she was alone at the moment. Taking a steady breath, her eyes appeared to narrow in thought and she repositioned herself to her original position and her gaze drifted further away and there was very slight uneasiness at the corners of her mouth as she stayed still.

"Would it be easier if someone was here with you?"

Hexxis seemed to hesitate for a fleeting moment before shaking her head and looking to the ground again. She reflexively moved to place a hand gently over the eye patch almost in a bit of defiance but remained silent.

"How about if you take it off yourself? Then I can just look at it."

She paused, the faintest glimmer of frown on her lips as she remained still and eventually shook her head. She was too reluctant to let someone she didn't know look at her eye even despite the concern that she had been injured. From what, she couldn't remember. Was it important? Probably not. Likely though sparring and combat training. That was the most likely answer. Either way, the doctor didn't want to further pressure her about it and wrote a note on her chart to sedate her later so they could look at it while she was asleep, closed the file and brought Mara back in to take her to where she'd been staying.

DoS

It was dark..

It was always dark.

Wait, this place was supposed to be dark. The lights and sounds. It was all so familiar. Information, just find more information. Learn as much as possible. Triggers and maybe know why she even existed. Was there any purpose past being a weapon. Likely not, but the more she learned, the more she dreaded what she came to find.

The music didn't bother her... she liked music. It's why she never opposed to the singing in her head. There was a blur of purple and gold glimmer of soft expression.

"My name is Zero.. "

"Experience works better than reading, by far, more so with someone who knows how to talk the talk and play the tune."

"My goal was to learn as much as possible about feelings and emotions so that I can experience everything that I can."

"Why does Haven seek Hexxis Luz?"

"He could kill us."

"Last chance. Get out while you can."

"Help me understand what the emotion even is..."

"Do you trust me?"

There was a deep pain in her chest as she struggled to remember what she had experienced. This person... they were important.. then why did it hurt so much?

"I don't think I'm very interested in love.."

A sob hitched in her throat as her eyes burned. No, she wasn't meant to love. That was not part of her programming.

Love is an emotion.

"You are not allowed."

That was bound to cause errors, no, she couldn't do that.

Terminate process love.exe.

There was a setting panic. She had to get rid of this malware immediately. Anything to make this pain stop. This was not okay. She was not okay....

She exhaled shakily, eyes still closed, her mind working faster than she could think. Stop the process. Terminate it. Exterminate it. The pain only increased.

Quarantine the process. This program is not allowed, it must be fixed or deleted.

You don't know him.

Stay away from me.

She was silent, her heartbeat was fast as she took in a deep breath then exhaled slowly.

Okay..... then he is gone.

There was a pause... who?

She gasped at air as her eyes opened suddenly, placing a hand against her head as she was narrowed her eyes in pain. Something wasn't right...

But what was wrong?........ she couldn't tell.

She just knew something was off, and she felt an odd aversion to find out.

Just Okay

Looking down at his ringing cellphone, he arched a brow at the unknown number and answered it, "Hello, Zephyr Kardos speaking." he said with a very exhausted voice, clearly having been traveling for a bit.

There was a bit of silence on the line before a voice finally came for. "Is it really you?" she asked, her voice was robotic and bland but it was obvious she was trying to make herself believe it was really his voice.

Zephyr looked a little confused by the silence, but as he heard the voice, he smiled a bit, though it was more out of amusement by the question of if it was really him. "Well, I did answer it as being myself, so I'm pretty sure I would know if i'm me or not."

"You could be lying..." she retorted almost jokingly even if it didn't sound like it. She smiled faintly, even if there was a hint of pain in her eyes. "I couldn't hear you when I was in Belrad. Are you okay?"

"Oh - Yeah, I was just called to do another job from a friend, so I'm going to do that real quick before I take an extended vacation." Zephyr smiled a bit, leaning into the seat of his rental car, "How are you feeling yourself, though..?"

"Better..." she responded. "I... I remember almost everything." she informed. There was a pause, "A lot has happened.. I am with Tri and I will be staying with him." she spoke, her sadness surfacing only briefly.

He smiled wide, "Well - just...try and stay safe, alright? I'll be around if you need me. Don't hesitate to call.." Zephyr took in a breathand held it, "I love you.."

She actually smiled, "I will. And you as well." she spoke back softer. "I know... I love you, too." she responded with a sigh. "I just needed to hear your voice again..." she inhaled, holding it for a moment before letting it go again. "I will acquire another cellphone, this one is temporary.. When I do, I will call you again so that you can talk to me once more. I hope this is acceptable."

Zephyr chuckled a little bit, "Yeah, that's fine. I just hope things are well for you now, I was worried.." he looked up at the traffic light and ended up pulling off to the side so he can keep talking if needed.

"Minor injuries... But I am fine. Ree came to save me..." she paused, "I know you tried. I apologize if I had hurt you..... I didn't know." she kept walking, looking upward to the sky as she kept moving. "Tri was able to change my programming... No one can control me with commands anymore besides him... but I trust him."

"You didn't hurt me." He smiled a bit, "I'm just happy that you're acting more like how you were when I had met you....." he let out a happy sigh, "Oh, I do...have your sword. It was sort of...left and I didn't want anyone else to have it.."

"That's a relief." She blinked, "I didn't know if you had still needed it... If you don't, I can summon it back to me..." she responded calmly. She looked back and sighed, "There is more people now, I should go."

"I don't...need it, but i sort of would like to keep it around..for a little longer." He chuckled a bit, "Alright. I'll talk to you later."

"Alright then." she nodded slightly. "...until next time.."

"Love you." Zephyr said quietly.

"I love you.." she responded back quietly, reluctant to hang up but did nonetheless.

Tiny Hands

Hexxis had been laying with her eyes closed for a while now. Everyone had been asleep and while she had wanted to try, she simply could not fall asleep. She sighed slightly, just lost in her thoughts about the things that had transpired and sorting through what she knew and figuring out the jumbled mess of her memories. It was until the sound of soft footsteps caught her attention but she remained still, eyes closed. Weight being applied by her feet and crawled up her legs, eventually taking place to sit on her chest. Odd, but the weight itself gave away that it was one of her half-siblings as small hands wrapped around her throat. They were inexperienced hands that neither had the strength or proper placement to be even remotely effective. After a few moments, Hexxis reached her hands up to cover theirs, opening her eyes to see Stormy sitting on her. Hexxis stared blankly at Stormy's surprised face. Hexxis then moved Stormy's hands into the correct position. "..press your thumbs here and it will not need as much pressure.." she instructed calmly.

Stormy was hesitant then nodded, applying a bit of pressure in the correct points that even caused Hexxis to wince slightly, a more triumphant smile on her own face before releasing and sitting back.

"I can teach you how to defend yourself if you are quiet." she offered with a bland voice.

Stormy blinked, unsure if it was a joke or not but nodded anyway and crawled off of Hexxis carefully. Hexxis got up quietly and Stormy followed her out of the hotel room and outside, being careful to leave the door ajar so they could get back in and remained quiet so that they could have a moment alone.

The moment they were outside in a clearing with no way to be seen by others, Hexxis turned to Stormy. "Show me how you punch."

"Shouldn't I be using my powers?"

"Haven has ways of disabling or counteracting your powers. You need to be able to escape on your own strength."

"I can already do that."

"Then punch me. As hard as you can. You cannot hurt me."

Stormy drew back and threw her fist to hit Hexxis but it didn't do anything to the teenager.

Hexxis immediately shoved Stormy down and stared at her with a blank face.

Stormy made a noise of pain as she was shoved. "Hey!" she got back up and tried to hit Hexxis again only to be shoved down once more. Getting back up, she tried to kick Hexxis but yet again it did nothing as she was shoved down. Electricity began to arch across her skin as she glared at Hexxis.

"Electricity ability identified, nullifying for fifteen minutes." she spoke, dispelling Stormy's electricity. "No powers."

Stormy growled. "Then I can't fight you!" she hissed angrily.

"Then don't."

Stormy blinked in confusion.

"Watch as I do. Take your hands and curl your fingers in, thumbs on the outside." she balled her hands into fists to show Stormy and waited for the child to mimic her. "Then take a step forward in a solid stance. Your stance is to ground yourself for balance." she instructed, moving a foot forward and lowering her body slightly, pulling her fists up to eye level, watching Stormy do the same. "If they attempt to grab you, you use the bottom of your palm to beat on them until they let you go. Hit their arms, chest, and especially their face. You may even, at this time, kick them in the knees, knee them in the groin, or stomp on their foot. All of these are in an attempt to break their hold." she continued a flat voice.

Stormy made the motions, following Hexxis as she did them, then paused. "This isn't even fighting..." she commented, narrowing her eyes.

"Be patient." she insisted then continued with her instructions. "After you are free to move, you want to run as fast as you can away. You are small and they likely are not. Use that to your advantage. Run into tight spaces, crawl under things they can't get to, use cars or trash cans as cover. Use your environment to your advantage. You are harder to hit as a smaller moving target, as I am sure you are also very agile, I assume that should be no problem for you." she commented then kneeled down to Stormy.

Stormy watched her, then dropped her guard as Hexxis kneeled down to her level. "Is this the part where we fight?"

Hexxis shook her head. "We can spar at a more opportune time where we can build your strength and hone your dexterity. It will take time, but you will learn it if you choose to." she spoke then narrowed her eyes slightly. "I am, however, going to show you weak points on the human body that you can strike if you must to ensure your survival. This is for you to know if your life is truly in danger. Do you understand this?"

Stormy nodded slowly, actually being sincere for once.

Hexxis nodded in response. "These points will do serious damage and should not be used lightly. That being said, weak points on the face are the temple, eyes, ears, trachea, nose." she pointed out each area on herself as she listed them off. "You can grab, punch, shove your thumbs into these points for temporary to permanent incapacitation."

Stormy nodded.

"Weak points on the body are the solar plexus, liver, ribs, groin, quad, fingers, knees, ankles, toes. There are many weak points to the body. Most of these require slightly more skill or more force to do more damage but can still aid in getting to more sensitive areas if you are having trouble getting access to the face or groin. Does this make sense?"

Stormy nodded again. "Will you teach me cool fight moves when we fight?"

"Sparring. I am able to teach you a lot about combat if you pick up quickly and are diligent. If this is okay with you, I can request if Tri will allow this when we are settled." she spoke in a monotone voice but there was a hint of a faint smile as she offered a hand to Stormy.

"I want to learn!" she exclaimed enthusiastically and took Hexxis' hand. "Can you teach me to shoot things too?" she asked, making gun noises with her mouth playfully.

Hexxis began to lead her back to the room. "I cannot. The lack of vision in my blind eye causes a severe decrease in visual acuity, depth perception, balance, and spatial orientation required to adequately fire guns in high-stress combat situations. You will likely need to ask Tri for such lessons if that is your desire." she then motioned to Stormy to be quiet and entered the hotel room, closing the door quietly and letting her lay back down with Akash.

"Thank you, robot sister.." she whispered as laid down.

Hexxis blinked but appeared slightly amused by her nickname, "You are welcome, small sister." she responded then laid down carefully next to Tri and closed her eyes. Though she felt good about it all, sleep still wouldn't come. At least it was a fact she was used to, as she laid there silently until dawn came.

From Dream to Dream

Zeph: /comes back from a mission, wearing a full suit, starts to strip down/

Hex:: -just stares, not even breathing-

Zeph: /looks up as he's undoing his shirt/ You okay, love?

Hex:: -exhales shakily- ..no. -bites her lip- ...Keep going.

Zeph: /smiles and doing it much slower now/

Hex:: -staring intently, swallowing hard before standing up and walking over to him quickly, helping him rip his clothes off faster as she kissed him deeply, hands messily clinging to clothing and pulling with no real direction other than to remove the while not even looking-

Zeph: !!! /is quite surprised, though a little upset as the suit had cost quite a bit and had been tailored to fit him/ hey, I thought you wanted a show

"I changed my mind." she forced out through heavy breaths, moving a hand to the hair along the back of his head, pushing her body closer to his. She honestly didn't know how to convey her strong desires for him, just acting without barely thinking, knowing what she wanted but not exactly the way to get there. "I just want you.."

He laughed a bit, amused by how easily her desires were seen through her actions and reactions, "Well, I don't want you to destroy this suit, so you're going to have to sit back down and watch as I strip for you." Zephyr's smile turned to a grin, leaning in to kiss her lips, then her chin. "Maybe we'll be able to use the chocolate tonight."

Hexxis clenched onto the fabric she was secured to with one hand, reluctant to let go. She stared into his eyes, part of her not wanting to care about the suit, but the other half wanting to do everything he said, his way with words was difficult to ignore. She was slowly losing grip as he kissed her, her breath heavy from the touch of his lips. Then there was the offer of chocolate that she absolutely could not resist as she slowly stepped back, uncurling her fingers from his hair and clothes. Hexxis took enough steps to sit back down carefully, even if she never looked away from Zephyr, her gaze completely fixated on him as she waited for him to continue.

His grin faded back into a smile as Hexxis moved away from him, happy that the mention of chocolate got her to not rip the suit off of him. Moving his hands back up to the half-unbuttoned shirt, Zephyr went back to unbuttoning it, slowly revealing his well scarred and freckled chest. Shrugging the shirt of his shoulders and throwing it onto the ground once it slid off his arms, he hooked his thumbs into the belt loops and looked at Hexxis, a smirk starting to play on his lips. "It's been awhile since you've been this fiesty."

Hexxis bit her lip again, as the hands in her lap tensed within her focus. "It has been a while since I have seen you in a suit.... or rather... taking one off..." she retorted, her monotone voice not exactly robotic, but more of someone who was so enraptured by something that they merely spoke without thought or inflection. Taking a deep breath, it was quite apparent she was fighting the urge to get up again, just to run to him and continue where she left off.

"Well, I don't tend to wear them much anyways, but if you want me to wear it more, I can." Zephyr chuckled a little bit, starting to remove his belt, folding it over itself and snapping it once he had removed it from the belt loops. All that was left were the pants, and his boxers - if he had decided to wear any.

"Even if you wore them more often, I don't think you would be wearing them for very long." She commented, her gaze watching his hands move slowly. Hexxis inhaled as he folded over the belt, the sound of the snap causing her to flinch and sending chills down her spine. She exhaled deep laced with a soft noise of desire. Hexxis leaned forward slightly, still fighting her urges that demanded she take him. "Somehow this feels like torture.. Even if it doesn't hurt..." she whispered softly, anticipating what lie underneath his pants.

"Well, good. I do like and enjoy them, but the fun is taking them off and watching you squirm, waiting for me to be under your delicate, yet precise, fingertips...watching your eyes walk all over me as you wait to press your delicious lips to my skin..." Zephyr closed his eyes as he spoke, slowly undoing the buttons of his pants, having opted for a pair that had three buttons instead of the usual single button and a zipper. Once all of them had been undone, he slid his pants of, letting them hang at his hips for a second before just dropping them. For once, he was actually wearing boxers.

His words were like soft silk across skin giving her goosebumps, afraid to close her eyes even just to feel the words caress her body. Hexxis was gripping the bottom of her dress tightly, biting her lip harder, her gaze softening just slightly. Everything was screaming to move, to feel, to grab, to bite, but she obediently remained still, just on the edge of her willpower. Her body trembled more with each button that was released from its hold, just the sheer view of his pants hanging on his hips causing her hand to rise to her mouth and she bit her finger reflexively. Today would happen to be one of the few days he wore boxers, letting out a quiet strained whimper, the anticipation driving her thoughts into a frenzy, begging to taste his soft flesh.

Closing his eyes, he started to slowly remove his boxers, inch by inch. He did enjoy teasing her, as it made the pain she gave him much more delicious. "Mmm.. you know, I was thinking of asking you to marry me.." Zephyr stated rather nonchalantly as he continued to strip, eventually, finally, letting his boxers drop to the floor.

With each inch of flesh that slowly revealed itself to her fixated stare, there was a heat that built within her that started at her thighs and only continued to spread through her greedy body, hungry for more than just to watch. She had to act, no longer able to resist the temptation. The suit was off and that was all she needed in reason to get up as quickly as his boxers hit the floor. Barely giving Zephyr a moment to breathe from his statement as she almost immediately returned to her advances on him, locking her lips into his. Hexxis pulled at his hair much harder than before as her other hand slid across skin, no longer hindered by clothing, raking impatient nails down his back paired with a soft possessive growl that conveyed how bothered she had become by being forced to wait even if she had been technically given the choice. "Then ask me later..." she whispered softly, leaning to his ear to let him feel the breath of her wavering voice before she bowed her head enough to grab flesh of his bare shoulder in her teeth. She wanted him to feel the pain, his punishment for teasing her far past what she could control even if he only felt pleasure from the wounds she caused.

Letting out a pleased moan into the kiss as the nails went down his back, he grinned a little bit. "W-well, aren't you fiesty?" He asked, wrapping his arms around her and just letting her have his way with him. "Mmm but i don't want to ask you later, I want to ask you n--o....w.." his words were nearly cut off as he tried to pull away from her as a sudden pain shot through his chest, his eyes darting down to look at his own exposed chest. In the center of it, just below the sternum, a wound appeared - one that mimicked the one that he had received recently.

There was a flicker of a flirtatious smile on her lips, too deep in her own lustful thoughts to really give an answer, her actions enlightening how she felt. She felt his arms wrap around her, feeling safer in his grasp but also causing her to desire more. "Touch me more.." she whispered in a breathy tone that tried to cover the small moan that still escaped her lips. He began to persist in his question, only making her drag her nails harder down his back again with a growl, before pressing herself against him harder. She was impatiently pushing him towards the wall with probably much more force than she intended, his attempt to push away from her only peaking her drive further, grabbing his wrists to pin them fast against the wall before even realizing he was suddenly wounded. Her eyes widened fear as she took an immediately step back but not letting go. Quickened breath and a pained noise as she tears were building in her visible eye quickly. She suddenly pulled him forward into her arms and just hugging him tightly. "No no no no.. please.." she mumbled, her entire body trembling. "We just talked.. you were fine.. I can't lose you!!" she exclaimed, a hitch in her voice as she held in a sob. This meeting was illogical, the wound was illogical, her emotions were illogical. She knew it was a dream, but never wanted it to become a nightmare. "...please don't leave me..."

Zephyr himself looked horrified as he looked down at the wound, his hands quickly covering it up before he let out an uneasy chuckle, "I-I'm fine, really!" he said quickly, trying to ease her mind, but his own mind was dragging the reality of what had recently happened deeper into the dream meeting. The atmosphere of the entire place changed; instead of a nice bedroom in a hotel they had once stayed at, it was the tree itself, the rain pouring and lightning flashing. Looking up and around, he looked terrified. "No..nonono..." he started to mumble, panic starting to set in. The clothes that he had removed had re-appeared, but instead of the suit it was what he had been wearing at the tree - a simple pair of jeans and a black t-shirt. "Hexxis, I ...I need you to leave before this gets any worse."

Even if his words were meant to comfort her, it only furthered the growing sense of dread in her stomach. She didn't understand what was happening, this wasn't something she recognized, so was this really her doing or his? The wind was howling and the rain picked up, soaking through her clothes despite the covering of the tree overhead. Hexxis tensed up, her own fears playing at her mind, her reluctance to move, a crash of lightning that only illuminated the odd scene that somehow felt familiar even if she was sure she had never been here. Soon his panic was causing her heart to race and her shaking body only getting worse. "I-I can't,.. I'm scared." she mumbled, hoping that was even the right word for what she felt. The pain in her chest only increased before she moved a sudden hand to her mouth to wheeze, coughing up blood. Pulling her hand away, her eyes fixated on the blood, widening in complete horror then shift downward further to see the wound in her chest that was bleeding out and she let out a shriek that never came when suddenly her vision blurred and the world went black.

Looking over to Hexxis, he tried to pull her close, but she was getting further away. "Hexxis!" Zephyr shouted, pain both physical and emotional easily seen on his face. As the storm continued on around them, he watched in horror, trying to scream out for her again, but no words came out. As he continud to try to scream, he ended up snapping awake on the couch in his brothers house, his heart racing and breath ragged, he covered his mouth. He felt like he was going to get sick from the nightmare he just had, but he was also trying to keep himself from crying. Even though it was a dream, it was a horrible one. A nightmare, one that he hadn't had in a long time.

Don't Leave Me This Way

Hexxis just kept moving forward, her mind racing over guilt and remorseful thoughts and whether she should even answer Tri when he would contact her again. If he even contacted her. It was quiet and although sunny, was shady beneath the trees that only made her think on the dream she had a few nights ago, never really making heads or tails of it in the end. As the tree broke through to the other side, she saw a stone wall and a gate in the distance. She was trying to figure out what it was, too hesitant to approach it completely. She stood at the tree line and tried to see what the sign said, but it was just a little too far away to read it with only her one working eye.

Even though technically he had recovered, Zephyr was still trying to make good with his brother and had decided to stay a bit longer at the house as Corlyrr had gone off yet again. He had only dropped by for a couple days to drop off some things when he was found, then stayed long enough to make sure that Zephyr was all healed up. Making his way outside, he pulled out a pack of cigarettes and lit one and brought it to his lips, a soft, sorrowful version of the song he had enjoyed with Hexxis playing through his head as he tried to just let the idea of trying to find her go. She was safe, right? She had to be, she was with Tri.

Looking how far the treeline went, she moved along it before stopping suddenly and looking to the gate, a familiar tune slowly starting in her head as she tensed slightly, staring at the gate. "..sanctuary.." she whispered. '...but I will love you...' she sang slowly in her head, her heart beginning to pick up, just hoping it wasn't a dream.

Fumbling with the cigarette when he heard another voice in his head, he looked up and around, nearly forgetting the reason he had come outside. ' until the end of time...' he sang back, a smile spreading across his lips as he leaned against the side of the house that he had been staying in and took in a deep drag from the cig, letting the smoke out of his nose slowly. ' Hey, how are you holding up...?' he asked, wanting to know, wanting to find her. But, he didn't go out to try and find her, having a gut feeling that she was with Tri, and Zephyr knew how much her family hated him.

Hexxis relaxed slightly as he answered her, relief washing over her in his cool-natured words like always. 'Currently, I am okay. Tri and I were pursued by authorities at an ocean nearby. I don't think they are following anymore but Tri left to make sure they were gone it seems. He will contact me shortly.' she informed him, staring at the gate, squinting at it as she tried to read the letters. 'You.. went to Sanctuary..' she commented then frowned slightly, 'How are you?' she asked quietly, her uneasiness clear in her thought out words, wondering if he knew about the dream at all or if that was just all in her head or not.

Sliding to sit in the grass, he looked up at the sky, squinting as he used a hand to block the sun so he could look at the clouds without much of a pain. He thought about her words for a moment, noticing the slight change in how they were thought. 'It was the only place I could feel safe after something that happened recently.' As Zephyr thought, he turned to look around, wondering if she could see him, though he still didn't want to risk intercepting Tri if she was within walking distance. 'I should...probably tell you about what happened, as to not keep it ambiguous.'

Hexxis rested a hand against a tree next to her as she listened to him. 'What.. happened?' her words were apprehensive and she sounded worried. If Zephyr felt the need to be safe, something major must have happened, and her mind kept remembering the dream and that wasn't helping.

Bringing both hands up to rest his head in, he kept the cigarette between his lips as he took in a breath and slowly let it out. 'I ...ended up trying to talk to Oblivion..and he tricked me into working for him...' he paused, trying to find just the right words, 'I was used for his revenge plot against the one he was trying to find the entire time he was with me...'

Hexxis' expression changed only slightly as she thought back on Oblivion and what he said when he split from Zephyr. Her hands trembled slightly, '...ashral?.. did you... were you the one that killed her?...' she asked even if she was terrified of the answer. Taking a deep, shaky breath, she was pushing against the tree to stabalize herself.

'No, I don't...I don't know if I could have even escaped if I had been the one. I was used as the bait, I had another soul shoved into my body... I had Shogu's soul inside of me for a couple of days. He had taken over and Oblivion was using him...using me - just so he could kill her..' As he thought about everything that had gone on before the actual act, he gripped his hair and struggled to not cry. Going over the entire thing was a difficult for him, more so as it was so recent. Taking in a deep breath, he kept his eyes closed as he tried to pull himself away from reliving the event.

She listened to his explanation and frowned faintly. 'Tri told me earlier today that Ree had brought Ashral's body back to SIU to be buried. That someone had stabbed her through the heart.' she relayed before pausing, her voice becoming softer. 'I didn't know anything else about it. Or what they know about it.' Hexxis took in a shaky breath and put her free hand over her heart. '...so that dream.. was her...' she thought without realizing she had, her eyes shifting downward as she tried to handle the information.

Zephyr didn't quite catch what she meant at the end, as he just was still wrapped up in his own thoughts. 'Oblivion stabbed her - well, stabbed her and me...and then Ree killed Oblivion. I was...honestly expecting him to kill me too.'

'I see.' was all she could come up with as she tried to think of anything else to say. It was becoming apparently clear the dream was definitely about that even though she still couldn't understand why. 'I'm glad that you are still alive...'

He smiled a little bit, ' I'm glad too - it means I get to hear your voice again..' he slid his hands down over his eyes, one hand reaching for the cig and moving it from his lips, ' I do miss you.'

There was a faint smile that was trying to break through her frown, 'It's always a comfort to hear your voice.' She balled the hand over her chest into fist, trying to keep her emotions in check as she kept a blank face. 'I miss you as well. It causes pain in my chest to think how long it has been since I have actually seen your face.' Hexxis confessed, closing her eyes a moment, and focusing her breath so she didn't cry. The last thing she needed was to activate breakdown when she was alone like this.

'Well... if you're close enough, I can probably drop by and say hello and leave before he comes back? Just a small meeting...if you want to chance it' Zephyr smiled a bit at the thought, chuckling to himself as he thought about how they could easily be the protagonists of a young adult romance novel in how they were acting.

Hexxis hesitated slightly, trying to gauge the situation. Tri did say he would text her first, so the likeliness that he'd show up and catch them was quite slim. 'I'm outside the gates. I don't want to want to leave the tree line. But I'm here.' Hexxis bit her lip slightly in a bit of nervousness. She wasn't sure about it, but she was a little too anxious to decline him now.

Moving to stand, he dusted himself off and made his way to the gates, finishing up his cig and dropping it on a gravel path and squishing the butt of the cigarette to make sure it was fully out. hands in his pockets, he got to the gate and looked around, looking pretty thoroughly run through hell and back.

Hexxis stood beside a tree, in view of the gates as she waved discreetly to get his attention before waiting for him to come towards her. 'I'm to your right in the trees.'

Seeing her, he perked up and jogged over to her. Looking rather excited, he pulled her into a hug as soon as he got close enough, missing her, missing her embrace, her warmth, her everything. Taking in a deep breath, Zephyr let it out slowly, "I've missed you.."

The moment he was within her reach, she took a step froward and invited his embrace, hugging him tightly, taking in his warmth and his smell, just convincing herself it would be different than the last time. She rest her head on his shoulder, refusing to let go, like he'd disappear the moment she did. "I hate that I have to be so far away from you.."

"We'll be back together again soon.." Zephyr whispered, closing his eyes and just nuzzling into her neck, not wanting to let go either. He wanted to just pick her up and take her back to the house, but it wasn't his house and she was technically waiting for Tri. "I just want to stay with you.."

"I wish you could come with me... but Tri would never allow it. He doesn't particularly like me talking about things that involve you. He doesn't say it, but it's apparent." she spoke softly, her voice becoming raspy from forcing back her emotions to stay calm. "He'll be contacting me shortly to meet back up with me." she frowned, hugging just a bit tighter. "Then I'll have to go again."

Zephyr leaned into her, just enjoying it all. "I have a dead drop nearby - I can give you the code to it so you can get into it and leave or take some things.. I can leave stuff for you in it too.." he whispered.

Hexxis nodded, still resting her forehead against his shoulder. "I'll only be nearby until the end of the month... then we leave." she muttered regretfully. "..i'm sorry.." she whispered painfully. It was beginning to hurt to think about it, knowing how long she'd be gone and too scared to tell Zephyr.

"It's alright, Hexxis.." He whispered, moving to kiss her cheek, "I'll still be around....just not here in sanctuary. I think I might move to Belosh." He smiled a bit.

She nodded slowly, "I'll find you again. I promise that." she moved the kiss his lips gently then rest her forehead against his. The vibration of the phone in her pocket causing her to exhale deeply in an attempt not to start crying. Reluctantly, she pulled out the phone and saw the message and sighed. "I love you, Zephyr. There is nothing that will change that." Trying to let go, her grip only tightened before her body even allowed her to release him, a frown clear on her face.

Zephyr smiled sadly at her, "I love you too.." he took in a breath, about to teleport back to the house as it would be faster than walking, but he wanted to give her something. Rummaging through his pockets, he pulled out a small, clapperless bell and looked at it. Grabbing her hand, he pressed it into her palm and smiled, "To remember me by.." he said softly, leaning in to kiss her cheek before he let go and took a step back. "I'll be in Belosh, should you need to find me." he seemed to be struggling on not crying as well. ' I love you..' he thought to her before he vanished into the shadows to return to the house.

Hexxis looked down to the bell, recognizing it as an item that Zephyr always kept on him. She looked up to him to protest but then his words felt so sincere. Nodding, she wrapped her fingers around it and held it to her heart. There were flickers of pain in her eyes as tears were building in her eyes against her will. He vanished and she took a step back behind the tree, 'I love you.. until my dying day..' Wiping her face, she took in a breath to steady herself and then texted back Tri her location and waited.

Behind the Curtain//In the Pantomime

Hexxis oriented herself easily to her surroundings, quickly making it to a nearby dead drop and sliding in carefully when she was sure no one was watching. She grabbed a few supplies and a backpack to put it in, only what was necessary to get her to Belosh, which wasn't much being that she was in the next city over. She prioritized what she needed, moving to take up some cord and bit through the leather with her teeth, cutting it easily and slipping the bell that was in her pocket onto it and tying it around her neck. She then searched through clothing as she fixed up her hair it a flat messy bun. She selected a white tank top, black over-shirt and a pair of shorts and changed into it. She also found a wig that she could use, one that was in a short bob style in brown and gold highlights.

She grabbed some money from the stash, picked up the backpack and began to head out before her reflection caught her eye. All this work, and her eye patch and markings would still be a dead giveaway. Sighing with reluctance, she set the pack back down and sat at the small mirror and dug around for some reminiscent makeup. Hexxis stared at her own face, surprised to see such a sad and disheartened look on her own face. A hand slid up to grasp her eye patch and she pulled it off slowly, her eye still closed. She tried to open it but couldn't bring herself to do it yet. One step at a time. She could work on it. Hexxis began to apply makeup to her face to cover her markings. By the end of it, she looked almost... human. Except for her red eye anyway.

With that all set, she pocketed the makeup, the eye patch and made sure her jacket and clothes were folded nicely in the pack before finally heading out.

She walked back toward the bus station and purchased a ticket and quietly traveled to Belosh, making no effort to speak to anyone, just trying to stay out of sight and out of trouble. After a few minutes, she ended up falling asleep in her seat. It was a few hours later before the attendant nudged her. "Ma'am.. we've arrived in Belosh." he announced to her as she startled awake but relaxed when she realized where she was. She bowed her head a bit and exited the bus with haste.

It was getting late and she was reluctant to get a hotel room. She could try at a bar... No, she wasn't Zero. She wasn't anybody right now. Just a girl, looking for someone she lost. She walked down the street, looking for a place to stay at, although her money would only get her by for a few nights before she'd have to find some other means of making money. It was then that she had passed by a music shop, halting almost immediately at the acoustic guitars in the window and remembered learning to play some things when she had been with Zephyr. Without further thought, she went in and moment later, exited with a guitar that used the rest of her money to purchase. It was worth a shot, but she was sure she could at least garner enough to eat and maybe sleep for the night. Rinse. Repeat.

Just until she found Zephyr.

If she found Zephyr.

Walking further down into a more crowded part of town, she was getting nervous with people staring at her eyes, or at least the one she had open. It made her feel awkward and making her desperate for the touch of a cloth patch upon the created void of her face again. She took a deep breath, finally opening her left eye and just tried to keep her head down before finally finding a place to sit on a short concrete wall on Lorelei St.

Opening the case, she mimicked what she'd seen street performers do on television. She rested the guitar against her leg and strummed a few notes, thinking of what to play. She closed her eyes and tried to recall a song, taking in a deep breath she began to play the guitar like she had known how to her whole life. Starting into the intro of the song before she opened her eyes slightly and began to sing softly.

If I had just one wish I could have come true
It would be
To be reborn into a hand so warm,
a flower could cradle
How beautiful the world has become standing right next to you
Even if you had disappeared in my heart, I would know
I’d find you again
Then I wake to see, us sleeping side by side

There were a few glances from passerbyers, but life kept moving, she was nervous as she began to sing louder.

Leaving one by one, the petals are falling
Even now, I cannot tell you how your love has lit a fire in my soul
Each moment spent with you keeps my world from the pouring rain
If someday we part, torn like leaves even then I still know
I’d find you again

This was beginning to garner a bit more attention as people were staring at her but only as they passed. She took in a breath, putting more feeling into her voice.

Call out your name til I’m blue and then call again
I will not sleep without you with me

She began to sing with all she had, the music filling her soul as her eyes focused to the ground, no longer even aware of her surrounding as she merely put into song what was in her heart.

These tiny reeds bend and break just to fall aside
Then one day, even you, wont see me fly away ah
Never fade, all this love lasts forever

By now, people were making small gatherings and there was money being put into the open guitar case. She tapped her foot to the rhythm of her song, not even noticing the small amount of people that were standing and staring at her. Captivated by her beautiful voice.

The last of my tears, I’ll never leave you
Then I wake to see, us sleeping side by side
Til sunrise

As she drug her fingers through the last strum of cords, there was a bit of clapping and more money into the case as Hexxis looked up suddenly and she realized the attention she had drawn and immediately looked back down and nervously adjusted the strings just a bit and waited for the people to disperse and stop looking at her before she looked into the case, well more than enough money to replace what she had even purchased the guitar for. A slight sigh of relief as she collected the money and moved on quickly to a hotel nearby for the night. She washed the makeup off her face and removed the wig before sending a text message to Tri, notifying him that she arrived in Belosh and had acquired a hotel room.

The moment that it finally became silent in the room, she curled up into the blankets and suddenly began to cry. Burying her face into the pillow, she resisted the urge to scream.

"...keep it down... just keep it down..." she whispered to herself, her eyes overcome with tears as she stared at the clock. Reaching for the phone, she pressed a few buttons and looked at the two pictures she took at the beach with Tri, pain only swelling into her chest until she had to force herself to close out of the gallery and close the phone. Setting the phone back on the nightstand, she pulled her hands to cover her face. She tried to sleep, but she simply couldn't, looking at the clock again, hours had passed restlessly. Sighing she reluctantly slid herself sideways so she could see the TV and still lay down in her curled up position. Turning on the television, she flipped through channels until dawn broke, even then, her tears never let up until her face was red and her eyes stung.

Why Does My Heart Cry?

It had only been a few of days in Belosh, repeating the same habits over and over. Dawn would break quietly over the sky, she'd lay in the bed watching the monotonous programs on the television, barely moving, not caring to even rise. It wouldn't be until the light that peeked through the curtain died down and night fell that she'd even muster the strength to get up. Putting on the wig and concealing her markings, she'd finally grab her guitar case and head out for the night. Every night she'd find a place to sit along the wall at Lorelei St. She'd sit and she'd sing,

We once were as one, but now nothing remains
Even in twilight, the colors have all changed

She never spoke to anyone, not even if they approached. She remained silent if she wasn't singing. It wasn't needed, and she couldn't bring herself to do it.

Tell me the reason, I gave you my hand
And you took it, only to push me away
Soon your heart will be cold to the touch, frozen over
And you’ll be drifting astray

The sad look in her eyes was far more apparent when she sang so passionately, truly opening her heart in the only way she seemed to be able to communicate how she really felt deep down. Her fear, her doubt, her desire, everything she kept from the surface somehow when she played.

If this life is what fate has in store,
A white lie of promise for something more
We’ll close our eyes while under the grace of this cold, winter sky

It had only been a few days and already people on the streets whispered about the oddity of the girl who sang on Lorelei St. The girl you'd think was mute if she didn't sing. Her voice so captivating that some would stay for whole songs at a time, just hoping that she'd stay for another one before she wandered back off into the night.

We once were as one, but now nothing remains
Only the void of words we fail to convey
Even the distance between lies without revival

'Lorelei Heart.' What an ironic but fitting name for the nameless girl on Lorelei St that sang from her heart into the night. At some point she had stopped caring about what they thought of her, just singing and surviving in any way that felt safe. Some nights, she'd sing until her voice went raw, just sorting out her feelings until she didn't have the strength to continue, eventually retreating back into the hotel until the next night.

We once were as one, but now nothing remains
Even in twilight, the colors have all changed
Under the moonlight, we’re destined to fall deep in slumber
Where we may find peace at last

It had been days since she had eaten, not even sure she wanted to. Maybe the next day could be better. Reluctantly, she finished her song and the small crowd roared up in applause. All she could do was stare at the ground, even if she felt a flicker of accomplishment within her, she still felt empty.

On the way home that night, she stopped a 24-hour drug store and purchased some instant food, a notebook, a pen, and a chocolate bar. Her night was still the same, the moment the disguise came off, she'd break down crying. This time, however, she was so overcome with exhaustion, she eventually succumbed to slumber.

As a sliver of light breaking through the slit in the curtains finally hit her face, she winced and raised a hand to her face to block the light before opening her eyes reluctantly. She sighed as she sat up and looked over her things. She had garnered quite a large sum of money by that time, counting it and thinking over what Tri had said. A path of destruction for nothing other than money... She hardly cared about money, it's value meant nothing to her but only a small piece of how the economy circulated, even if the system itself was faulty at best. She tore a piece of paper out of the notebook and wrapped a hefty amount of the money in paper, $500 to be exact and put it into her purse, as well as the notebook, pen, and chocolate.

Today, she would don her disguise much earlier than usual, opting to leave during daylight hours as she made her way quickly through the city, heading toward the library. She walked, keeping her head down, hoping she didn't attract any unwanted attention. It was then that a small human? child ran straight into her and the small boy fell down to the ground, panicked and grasping a large baked bread in his arms. Looking up, she saw the boy and the demon man that was chasing him, he was screaming about a thief and she quickly picked up the boy and scooted him behind her. "Step aside! That kid stole goods!" he demanded angrily. Hexxis shook her head and reached into her pocket, pulling out a twenty and putting it in the man's hand and quickly ushering the boy away. The demon was utterly confused and was left speechless, as the money was well more than enough to cover a bakers dozen of bread and still have money left over.

Hexxis dodged into an alleyway and crouched down to the boy's level. "Stealing is bad." she spoke flatly. '...i'm sorry... i was really hungry...' the boy replied, on the verge of tears. "Understood." she muttered then dug into her purse, pulled out the paper-wrapped money and placed it into the boy's hand. "Please do not steal..." she spoke again with a faint smile then walked away, now having confused the small boy as well.

She sighed as she continued on to the library, finally making it and immediately signed up to use a computer and being ushered to one right away as there wasn't many people there. She pulled out her notebook and pen, beginning to write down the key points that Tri brought up during their last conversation. She didn't understand most of it, and she was quite determined to understand what it was he sought from her. Should be easy, the internet had an endless plethora of information that she could use to determine the answers to the questions not only Tri had, but she began to have. She crossed out the first three points she had written, finding them irrelevant or already answered by her own knowledge.

Tri had questioned Zephyr's work ethics, and that should be easy to answer being that she worked with him. A short search on work ethics turned up a list of needed ethics that were not only acceptable but commended. Excellent. Professionalism, Respectfulness, Dependability, Dedication, Accountability, Humility. She looked over the points and determined that Zephyr definitely had a very good work ethic as a mercenary. That was very easy to determine, just as she had anticipated.

Next, his personality. That would be a littler harder, but still all in the same. She did a search and retrieved a list of desirable personality traits and decided to only focus on the top ten listed. Trustworthy, Loyal, Intelligent, Loving, Funny, Moral, Good Listener, Supportive, Compassionate, Optimistic. Hexxis moved through each trait slowly and analyzed each one carefully and considered everything she knew of Zephyr. This was much harder as she had to go through and look up every one and get a clear understanding before deciding if he possessed the trait or not. Writing down the reason next to each word, she took a visual tally and surprisingly felt that he held true to nine of the ten traits listed. The only one she had to question and left blank was Loyal. She sighed, that was something that Tri had previously addressed with her before. That he wasn't loyal. And she could not say for certain he was either.

She looked up things that were acceptable and unacceptable in normal society, and although the information was obscure, couldn't find any reason why she wouldn't be considered normal. After a few more searches on that, she could not adequately understand the concept or what he meant, marked a star next to her question and moved on.

She paused, thinking over what love really was and how Tri questioned whether she understood it, and the inconsistencies of whether she did know or whether she had missed the understanding somewhere along the way. She typed into the search 'How do you know you are in love?' and scrolled through the articles, reading them but becoming frustrated as she couldn't understand them. They used emotions to convey the feeling of how it is to be in love and she wasn't familiar with emotions enough to grasp what it tried to tell her. She was about to give up the search when she clicked on an article from a science work explaining not only the chemicals and biology at play, but the parallel emotions that bridged the gap even that she understood the points it made about analyzing oneself for whether love was present.

  • You are addicted to this person.
  • You want your friends and family to like this person.
  • You celebrate this person's triumphs.
  • You definitely like this person, and this person likes you.
  • You really miss this person when you apart.
  • Your sense of self had grown through knowing this person.
  • You get jealous -- but not suspicious.

The items were clear as she began to line up her own life experiences to the article and found that.. Yes, she did love Zephyr. Well that made her side easier.. or more difficult, she couldn't tell yet.

That answered, she typed into the search 'How do you know if someone loves you back?' and scrolled, this time noticing an article by the same web address and immediately clicking it. She hesitantly scrolled down the page, slowly taking in each point, her hands shaking as she read them.

  • Wants to spend time with you.
  • Asks about your day.
  • Trusts you.
  • Helps you when you need it.
  • Shows respect for your views.
  • Includes you in decisions.
  • Shows affection.
  • Looks at you.
  • Likes to talk about the past you share.
  • Is willing to fight for you and your relationship.
  • Makes you feel good about yourself.

Relief washed over her as she could clearly see through what she knew that Zephyr loved her as well. Yes, that would make things easier. Then she didn't have to figure out what to do with feelings that were unrequited. A faint smile crossing her lips as she wrote them down so she could reference them later not that she really needed to, her memory was exceptionally good at recollecting information she had heard or seen. As she wrote them down, her smile began to fade as she began to realize something. He displayed all these points... but she, herself, had failed to help him when he needed it, include his feelings in her decisions... she had even stayed quiet when Tri berated their relationship and never once defended it, not even attempting to fight for it... just like Ree had yelled at her for... And who knows if she ever made Zephyr feel good about himself. His effort was there but hers was not. It confused her as she tried to understand why she had fit the previous list but not this one. The two-component checklist did not complete on her end and she began to have a horrible feeling in the pit of her stomach.

She pulled the notebook closer suddenly and moved back to her list of personality traits, going through them again, this time without Zephyr in mind, but herself. Finally taking a mental tally of her own traits, she could only say with conviction that only four of them even applied to her. She covered her mouth with one hand as she did it once more, this time with Tri in mind, and for some reason only finding him portraying five of the ten traits listed. Maybe six, still unsure how to adequately identify Loyalty and couldn't say with absolute certainty that even Tri possessed this trait based on the lacking definitions she had gathered. Tears were building in her eyes as she scooted her chair back and hunched over.

Zephyr was never the problem... she was.

She didn't deserve Tri or Zephyr and she had only continued to hurt them in her selfishness to try to keep them both. Her body was trembling as she choked back a sob, trying not to cry here in the library. It was only seconds before she grabbed the wastebasket near here and retched what little food was left in her stomach from the previous night. Pushing herself to straighten up, she was dizzy and could barely stand. Looking around the spinning room, people were staring, whispering her name.. Isn't that Lorelei Heart? she could hear the murmurs as her heart began to race. People were approaching her, her hands shaking. 'I need to get out... I need to leave right now..' she turned to shove her notebook and pen into her bag and took off running out of the door in a panic, not even stopping to answer the questions that began to overwhelm her and the people trying to stop her.

She ran until the pain in her leg became too much and she had to stop. Taking a moment to breathe, she tried to calm herself down before walking slowly down the sidewalk towards the hotel.

"Ma'am.. ma'am!" someone was calling out to her. She tensed up, thinking it was someone who had seen her get sick in the library earlier. Turning to look with caution, she looked to an elven woman approaching her with the bundle of money she had given the boy in one hand and leading along the boy with her other hand.

"Did you give this boy all this money?" the woman asked with worry. Hexxis nodded calmly and looked to the boy.

"I brought it back to the orphanage and she didn't believe me that you gave it to me." the boy added meekly.

Hexxis blinked then looked to the woman. "I gave it to him..." Looking over to the building they had come from, an orphanage for Metas that she was realizing the boy was from.

"This is far too much money to be giving a child. He cannot take this, I am sorry." the elf tilted her eyes slightly, looking at Hexxis' eyes. "Aren't you.. Lorelei Heart? That singer on the street everyone's been talking about."

Hexxis averted her gaze quickly and nodded slowly. "...if he cannot take it... then you take it... for the orphanage.." she muttered quietly, her anxiousness building again as she trying not to let it show.

"Are you sure?! This is a lot of money..."

"...i.. don't mind..." she looked down to the boy and took a deep breath and smiled faintly again. "...so they don't get hungry..." she added, a bit clearer as she felt something she couldn't explain, something that felt a bit more right.

"Praise gaia.... Thank you so much for your kind donation. It is greatly appreciated by us and the children." the elf spoke, gracious and fairly surprised by it all. "Witley, please thank her.."

The child stepped forward to hug Hexxis at her uninjured leg, but she crouched down to hug him as he approached.

"Thank you, Ms. Heart!"

"You are welcome, Witley." she responded softly before letting him go and straightening to a stand. The boy waved and the elven woman thanked her again before they left back for the orphanage.

Hexxis made her way back to the hotel and slid against the door as she closed it into a sitting position and covered her face. She hadn't even gotten the makeup off her face before she began to cry. Her chest hurt so much that she had to lay down on the floor where she was for a few hours to even collect herself to a point where she could stand again. By then it had begun to rain outside, looking out the window at the skies lit up with lightning. Deciding against going out, she removed her disguised and crawled into the bed, curling up into the blankets and she laid there for another hour quietly sobbing before she finally fell asleep.

Inside My Heart Is Breaking

How long had her eyes been open? She knew she had fallen asleep sometime during the night with the sound of rain and reluctance to even continue on with consciousness. It was well into the day by now, she hadn't been up early enough to text Tri at the exact time she usually did. She reached for her phone and texted him, apologizing for delay and ending the message with the same things she always wrote. I am okay. Hope you are alright as well. She then locked the phone and sighed. Debating whether she even wanted to face the day, she didn't realize she was already starting to get misty eyed. Hexxis laid back down and fell asleep for a few hours, deciding against the worth of even going out in the day, especially after what had happened in the library the last time she had been out.

The next time she opened her eyes, the sun was about to set, maybe only an hour left in the day as she pushed herself up from the bed, her whole body protesting in angry waves of aches and pain. Moving into the bathroom, she showered quickly and once completely dry, stared at the mirror. She hated herself, the person she saw, the girl who was broken beyond repair. The weapon who was only playing human. She questioned whether she could ever be a real person or whether she would truly never fit in.

Maybe you were better off staying a weapon...

Hexxis' eyes widened in confusion, fear, and panic. The soft voice, something she knew all too well. "No, shutup. You're not even there anymore." she spoke quickly, searching her own face for changes. For any possibility that her old headmate had somehow come back after her death.

Trying to be a person was the biggest mistake... we ever made...

"Cease this... Cease at once!!" she demanded loudly, grasping the sides of her head with both hands, closing her eyes tight as her whole body trembled. She waited for a while in silence before she opened her eyes again. Whatever voice she heard was gone. Which only left her to question whether it was all just in her head or not. She washed her face to get herself to focus back on reality and all the while listened for any more voices, but it never came.

By the time she had donned her disguise, it was nightfall and she picked up her guitar case and headed out for the night. Her pace was slow and her body still fought against her movements the whole way, and halfway there had almost turned back to give up. It wasn't until she had reached the place where she usually sat that something caught her attention. There were flowers in bundles placed in the area and there was a card sitting on the wall underneath a rock to keep it in place. Approaching the scene cautiously, she lifted the rock and took the letter in hand, inspecting it carefully. Lorelei Heart was written on the front of the envelope and she opened it. Inside was a get well card and a hand written letter on the thick paper mentioning that she had been seen in the library getting sick and was hoping she was okay. The letter encouraged her not to push herself to hard and whatever she was going through, she was still loved by the people of Belosh. Hexxis didn't understand why someone would go to such great length for someone they didn't even know. Compassion. She knew she was supposed to feel humbled by this and even some kind of thankful feeling, which she did, but it was mixed with feelings of worthlessness and regret.

She slid the card into her bag and sat down among the flowers, pulling out her guitar, she began to play right away, her emotions brimming and demanding to be let out the only way she knew how.

Ever on and on I continue circling
With nothing but my hate in a carousel of agony
Till slowly I forget and my heart starts vanishing
And suddenly I see that I can't break free—

The words came so naturally and flowed with such a grace even if she was merely creating songs from her deep within her heart.

I'm slipping through the cracks of a dark eternity
With nothing but my pain and the paralyzing agony
To tell me who I am, who I was
Uncertainty enveloping my mind
Till I can't break free

It didn't take long for the crowds to gather, utterly enchanted by her voice. Although her song was filled with sadness, they still couldn't help but listen to what she conveyed through song.

And maybe it's a dream; maybe nothing else is real
But it wouldn't mean a thing if I told you how I feel
So I'm tired of all the pain, all the misery inside
And I wish that I could live feeling nothing but the night

Tears were building in her eyes as she sang. She tried her best to hold back, but as her voice grew louder with passion, the tears fell from her eyes and she just continued to play. People were beginning to whisper among each other. She closed her eyes and just kept going, strumming and singing with everything she had.

You can tell me what to say; you can tell me where to go
But I doubt that I would care, and my heart would never know
If I make another move there'll be no more turning back
Because everything will change and it all will fade to black

She came to a stand, opening her eyes to turn and jump up onto the wall she had been sitting on. She stood and played with all her soul, garnering a far larger crowd than she ever had. Hexxis hadn't even realized she had even moved while she played, her own self a slave to the music she created.

Will tomorrow ever come? Will I make it through the night?
Will there ever be a place for the broken in the light?
Am I hurting? Am I sad? Should I stay, or should I go?
I've forgotten how to tell. Did I ever even know?

The crowd had fallen silent as they watched her, before beginning to cheer for her almost like some kind of improvisational concert on the street. They were throwing money into the guitar case and some were calling her name.

Can I take another step? I've done everything I can
All the people that I see I will never understand
If I find a way to change, if I step into the light
Then I'll never be the same and it all will fade to white

As she finished, she realized how big a crowd she had garnered, everyone practically excited to see her perform. It made her heart swell for just a moment, but it still felt like something was missing. She quickly jumped down in nervousness as a few people expressed how much they liked her music but eventually everyone had dissipated. Leaving behind a man who approached her.

"Lorelei Heart, I have a record company that is very interested in making you a star on television and doing large concerts over Tretera. You really look like that's what your goal is and I can make it come true if you want to come with me."

Hexxis blinked and looked away suddenly, she shook her head and collected her things quickly and hurried off. The man called after her but she kept walking, almost into a run before finally getting home.

She had never meant to garner such attention like this, and she especially didn't want to be famous. It felt like she was always doing something wrong even when the people around her made it seem like it was right. She fell to her knees into a sitting position and pulled out the card to look at it again. Staring at the card, she began to cry. Pushing herself to a stand, she wiped her tears, smudging makeup as she put the card on the nightstand in an open position.

She removed her disguise, prepared for bed and for once, despite her tears, fell asleep quite easily.

Does Anybody Know What We Are Looking For

Tri stared quietly out the slightly open tent flap as people woke up and headed out into the morning rays of sun. His eyes were fix on a point in the air just past one of the movable cabins as he waved before falling asleep and staying awake. There were only so many things that he could think about before it started repeating or just blanking out from exhaustion. New information would either be a request in text form to Hexxis or as Mara said...actually call her, something he had been putting off for a while now. Sighing he unlocked his phone and went with it, calling back the last text he had and waited. It might be to early but he doubted she slept much

Hexxis was watching television, flipping through channels with a bored and solemn look, curled up in blankets. She had Barely noticed the hints of light beginning to break through the seams in the curtain when her phone began to vibrate on the nightstand. Blinking, she shifted herself to a sitting position and pulled the phone to her face and recognized the number immediately. Sliding it to answer, she rested the phone against her ear. "..is something wrong?" she asked immediately but in a very calm, monotone voice while she rubbed her eye with one hand from the hours of staring blankly at a screen.

Tri closed his eyes and shook his head as he heard her voice, not that she could see it at all."No, nothing wrong. I was advised to call you and see how you were voice to voice. How are things?"

Hexxis relaxed as Tri assured nothing was wrong, a relief in itself. However, that feeling of worry was only replaced with pain as she searched for the words to speak, to answer his question. She opened her mouth to say she was okay but paused before the sound could make it out of her throat. That wouldn't do. She needed to answer something different. If he had just wanted to hear the same thing as her text messages, he would not have called. "I am staying in a hotel room in the heart of the city. My emotions are sporadic but managable. I have consistent income, not being a mercenary. I am still alone." she answered softly, her gaze focused to the ground. "I pose the same question to you as well.."

There was a pause as he listened to her answer, trying to hear any slight changes of intonation to guess at her mood. "I am currently north of Criel near the coastline and the scar working off my debt. That has been taking up all my attention lately as it does not allow to much or anything else. " there was another paused before he continued as he caught hold of two keywords that sent a faint warning through him. "Consistent income, what are you currently working as? Also....you have no leads on him by now?"

She kept her voice calm as she spoke, pushing down her emotions with a bit more ease as she only had to focus on her tone. Listening to him answer the question about the work he was doing, she would have nodded but knew he wouldn't see it. "I see." she answered flatly before Tri presented two more questions. She paused as well, attempting to find the best way to put it. Why was it so difficult to answer these two questions, she couldn't understand. "I make money by playing guitar and singing to crowds of people." she didn't know terminology for what it was she did, only knowing that it made her money and it didn't appear to be bad like being a mercenary. "As for him,...no. It has been a little more difficult in finding information for him while not trying to give myself away as an ex-mercenary. So while my search has not been aggressive, what I have looked for has not produced any results."

"A street performer? " he supplied, a curious look on his face as he did not know how to feel about that but considering what she could have been doing it was a whole lot better. "You must have a very good voice and playing ability to be able to afford a hotel room without dipping into your savings" he said calmly, trying to compliment her through what he could assume based on what she had said. He never knew she sang or played but knowing of her ability it would be something she would pick up quickly. "As for him....I see. The purpose was to find him and understand, if you are unable to find him you can always return if you like....if you promise not to continue being in contact. Or I can ask one of the mercenaries here for any information they might have " he could do it when he found something he knew might make then happy...timing the request right even if it was still far fetched.

"I suppose that would be what it's called.. logically." she answered then exhaled, laying back on the bed to stare at the ceiling. She closed her eyes, listening to his voice as he complimented what she had been doing. There was a slight smile of relief but only quickly faded as her own thoughts merely shoved it back down with negative feelings. His voice was so calm which she couldn't tell over the phone was because he trusted what she was doing, or if it was because he didn't have to worry about her being such a troublesome daughter. She remained silent, not exactly knowing what to say about it all. "The most logical place to look is with the mercenaries. He's well known with them. Outside of that, it's harder to locate him. I had considered attempting to hire him to give reason why I would be looking for him. Though, I've come into a predicament where my disguise, too, has become very well known." she sighed, "Maybe it is best if you could ask one of the mercenaries there for information. I'm not sure I will find the opportunity to do that myself." she finally answered and opened her eyes.

There was a flicker of pain as she continued on with attempting to find him, as if the other option had no merit in it at all. It was of course the option -he- wished for the most and should not have been surprised she did not consider it. Now he was left with the task of actually doing what he offered, even if he had offered it without much thought on the person he just offered to contact. A sick feeling ran through him as he realized what he needed to and who he was contacting and for what reason. Hate just flared up inside as he pulled the phone away, he wanted to kick something ..freeze it utterly break it apart and imagine it was the other merc. Things had smooth only slightly when he had been with Mara, but he wasn't able to stay long, even on day wasn't really enough.

He wanted to protect Hexxis not throw her to him as he did, the only way to protect her was to keep her away. "I will ask one of them. In the meantime...if you are unable to find him within the month do you wish to return?" He asked, his voice a continued calm hiding the turmoil inside.

It was quiet for a bit, she supposed neither of them knew what to say at the moment, being that it was a fairly awkward and tense conversation to begin with. He posed another question that only increased in difficulty of her ability to answer. This time, her voice was soft, the break of the flicker of pain faintly behind her tone as she spoke, "I will consider it. At this moment, I have come to the conclusion that I had a lot to think about, and keeping those things in mind, I would make my decision based on that, rather than my longing to continue a search for someone who cannot be found. It is only logical. Emotionally, I feel my heart wants to say yes, but it also feels pain for already being given that option before and its wishes disregarded. That is just the fact of my situation. In time, I will likely be able to push aside illogical feelings, but for now, I cannot say for certain."

"I see. Then continue to keep me posted. Call me every now and then so I can see you are okay " his voice had not change but he had pushed his head back to face the top of the tent but kept his eyes shut. Yes ...he deserved that...and it made sense, he threw her out to find herself. He wasn't going to call the merc, if she asks he will say something but he had the feeling she didn't care to hard about it either at the moment.

"I will do that." she answered bluntly. She waited in silence for a bit, not sure what to say. "Please stay safe."

"You too" he replied and hanged up, letting the phone drop to his lap as he sat there in silence as people moved on and about outside.

As the line disconnected, she closed the phone and sighed, tossing it to the side of her as she grabbed a pillow and shoved her face in it to scream.

Does Anybody Know What We Are Living For

The night was silence and her mind plague with no singular thought of memory, flickering through her life, weaving through experiences and playing them back like a distorted movie overrun by fear and the struggle to survive: in the world she lived and in her own mind that betrayed her constantly. Each image worsening, playing them worse than how they had been. Blood. Lots of blood. Death. And the inability to help anyone. To help herself.

Wake up.

Hexxis gasped and sat up suddenly, trying to settle her troubled mind. She placed a hand on her head and took a deep breath to hold back the threatening sobs that brinked on the edge of her throat. Today was going to be a long day. Eyes slowly looking to the curtains, it was barely daylight outside. Reaching over, she texted Tri as always, got ready for the day and headed out.

She stood on one of the street corners trying to muster the courage to return to the library. She could easily just go back and try again tomorrow. Her hands were shaking and her head down as she stood there, a frown slowly starting in on her lips.

"Lorelei Heart?" a male voice called out. Hexxis turned back to look to see the same man from the previous night. Her eyes widened slightly and she took off running without a second thought.

She kept moving until she couldn't see the man anymore. It didn't seem like the guy had even followed her at all, only trying to get her attention but had no intention of chasing her down. Good. A deep exhale, she placed a hand over her heart and continued on in a brisk pace to the library.

She quiet walked over to the sign in desk to put her name down for a computer. The lady at the desk smiled at her. "Are you feeling better?" she asked. Hexxis kept her head down and nodded slowly. "Did you get my card?"

Hexxis looked up suddenly in surprise and then slid her gaze away and nodded again. "...thank you.." she responded softly then was led to a computer.

Pulling out her notebook and pen, she started searching the internet once more, researching how to live on her own and took down notes as well as researched how to be responsible and rely on herself.

As far as being responsible and seeing that it ran parallel with maturity appeared to be a very straight forward list of things. Reasonable points none the less as she already complied to quite a few of them already. Simple adjustments could be made. Even if she felt a little relieved she could handle this much, there was still that same sense of hopelessness that refused to leave her. She didn't understand when it exactly started or what would make it go away, but she knew it was still there.

The list of suggested requirements needed to successfully live on her own was far longer and more detailed. It almost worried her. She wrote it all down in her journal and scratched out a few points that were irrelevant. The long list of points were divided in four sections, so she focused on the first one. Things like Respect your parents gave her a saddened feeling and quickly moved on before she started crying again in the library. Find Mentors, Explore career options. Look into adult hobbies. Find an apartment. This all was a lot, and would require further research.

She looked up to see that same guy once again talking to the lady at the desk. She pointed toward the books in the opposite direction of where she was and Hexxis took the opportunity to gather her things and sneak out. The lady smiled at her and gave her a wink, Hexxis nodded a thank you to her and made her way to the street and hurried off. That man was very persistent, wasn't he...

She was trying to make her way through the busy streets as quickly as possible as she just wanted to go home.

"Ms Heart?" a voice called out and Hexxis turned around in panic, but relaxed as she met eyes with Witley. "You look unhappy... Do you want to come to go to the store with me?"

Hexxis hesitated and then nodded. It didn't seem so bad. Witley smiled and tucked his small hand into hers and led her to the store. "You don't talk much, do you?" Hexxis merely shook her head. "That's okay, you don't have to talk... I'll just talk and you can respond if you feel comfortable?" Hexxis nodded again and gave a faint smile.

Witley moved through the store as Hexxis held the basket for him, he put milk, bread, potatoes and a few other vegetables into the small basket. Witley idly talked about the orphage and how he helps take care of the other kids who are smaller until they get adopted.

"You have not been adopted?"

Witley shook his head, "No, I guess no one wants a broken child so they just look me over for smaller children.."

"Broken?"

Witley nodded and pulled down the back of his shirt to show what looked like two gems that resembled a cracked in half green star that sat separately where wings would be. "My gem is broken, so I don't have any powers. I hear parents whisper how I'm just safer staying at the orphanage and all that. It doesn't bother me anymore."

Hexxis frowned and looked over to see ice cream bars and put some in the basket. Witley raised an eyebrow but didn't question it. Once they got to the checkout, Hexxis paid for it all even if Witley did have the money for what he was buying. She knew it was for the kids at the orphanage and didn't mind being the one to pay for it. They moved outside and Hexxis moved over to sit down and waited for Witley to join her right out the store. She handed him an ice cream and took the other, staring at it for a moment before beginning to eat it. Her stomach immediately hurt, revolting against the fact that she hadn't eaten in days and this is what she chose to consume, hunger hitting her all at once. Although, she ignored it for now. "Why doesn't it bother you anymore? What changed your mind?" she asked flatly, trying to understand as she stared off.

Witley looked confused and laughed. "..I lied,.. it still bothers me. It probably always will. But if I let that get me down, I'll lose sight of helping others. The other kids need me, so I push away my selfish feelings. I can live without parents even if it hurts. The younger ones can't." he answered with a frown as he ate the ice cream. "Do you have parents?"

"Kind of. For whatever reason, my parents were never there. So I was adopted by someone. But recently, he.." she paused and took a breath. "He suggested I leave... so now I am alone."

Witley stared at her and then nodded. He didn't know what to say to that. While he understood, he was also a little jealous that she had even been adopted. But she was an orphan like him.

"I am broken too."

Witley paused and stared at her.

"I am a Meta as well. My left eye.. doesn't work. I'm half-blind. I always have been." she confessed then looked to Witley and faintly smiled. "You have a very high chance of being adopted despite your flaws... You are a very good person." she assured in a monotone soft voice. Pausing for a moment, she pulled out her phone and took a picture of Witley eating ice cream.

Witley laughed, finding her lack of sympathetic voice to her kind words and even her unexpected behavior to be odd but amusing. "You're really strange, Ms. Heart. But you're cool. I hope we can hang out again. I have to get back to the orphanage before the sunset... I'll see you later!"

"Will you be alright to return on your own?"

"Yeah, I'll be alright. Thanks for the ice cream!!" he waved then hurried on with the bags of groceries back to the orphanage.

Hexxis nodded and waved back, smiling faintly once more. And for just a split second, she thought she felt the lack of that dreadful feeling before it merely returned seconds later.

She wandered around for a while, keeping out of sight until the sun set and she swung back by her hotel room to pick up her guitar and headed off to the place she always played. There was already a small crowd forming in anticipation for her arrival. It made her nervous as she began to regret doing this, but they already saw her and she made sure to look around for the guy who kept trying to get her attention, but he wasn't there.

She remembered her conversation with Witley earlier that day, trying to find the courage to keep going, just to keep moving. Eventually, this would garner too much attention and she'd have to stop, and she wasn't even sure she hadn't already hit that point by now.

Setting up, she readied then began to play.

There's no curtain call
And there's no point in life at all
If each day ends and this bent heart of mine cannot heal
I can't see a darn thing but could it be
That the gray clouds that I loved completely blinded me

They're souls like me and you
Who aren't aware of what they do
Always laughing in the face of danger and truth
Can't they see
Right through their hazy glee?
That nothing good comes of rushing in blindly

I'll keep moving on
No matter what may come my way
And I'll sing, not fearing what they say

Deep in my heart I know for sure
That you are hurt, feel insecure
And surly crying because you are only human

These tears of mine are screaming out: "It's not a lie"
And as I cry I want to thank you
For showing me what I could be
I won't let go
I thank you so

By the end of her song, the crowd clapped for her and cheered and she took a look around once again, not seeing the guy and sighed with relief. She guessed he had given up by now and just let it go. She listened to the roar of the crowd on the street and frowned, sitting there alone in her own thoughts as she idly strummed notes and then looked up to big outdoor screen on the central building of Belosh. Had it been there all along? Probably. It was silent, only displaying pictures of recent events and such. None of it concerned her, she could easily watch the news from her hotel room. She played a few more songs then packed up and left.

She picked up more instant food on the way back to the hotel, not bothering to try to eat more than that. Taking off the disguise, she sat on the bed and watched television and ate a bit before falling asleep precariously across the bed.

Another Hero, Another Mindless Crime

Yet another day, the same old monotonous things that filled her life. She woke up at daylight and texted Tri. After a few moments, she couldn't find the will to get out of bed so she lay there with a blank stare at the ceiling before forcing her eyes closed, and maybe she fell asleep or maybe she didn't care how much time passed within the silence of the room. Either way, she finally opened her eyes and it was hours later. She looked over to the nightstand and looked at the card she had received. She stared at it for a while before she grabbed her phone and looked through the three pictures she had. Two of Tri and the one of Witley. Hexxis stared at the one of Witley for a long time before something odd built within her, a want to speak again. To see him and be some kind of support for him. She never felt her support was solid, even with Zephyr it was based in hiding from Tri and Ree. But she could try to help this child. Someone who was strong for others, when no one realized that strong person still crumbled within, needed someone else to lean on. She understood that now.

With a sense of purpose, she looked to the window, noting she still had some time before sunset washed out the skies and she donned her disguise and grabbed her guitar and ran out of the door with haste.

Hexxis beelined for the orphanage and met with the elven woman who appeared to run the place. "..witley.." she spoke within heaves to catch her breath.

"Miss Heart, is everything alright?" the woman looked concerned and surprised.

"Let me take him to see me play.. I want to.. do this for him. Please." she asked. The elven woman smiled and almost laughed.

"This is very unorthodox, ma'am." she responded subtle glint of intrigue.

"Please. I will take him with me and he can stay with me overnight. I will return him safely in the morning. Is this alright? I will understand if this is unacceptable." Hexxis bowed, and the elven woman only grinned wider.

"Usually I'd just call you crazy, but you are very kind to that boy. And I cannot ignore that you have donated quite a gratuitous amount of money to the orphanage. So I'll overlook it just this once. Please do not make a habit of it."

"Thank you very much."

The elven woman left to go retrieve the boy and moments later, Witley came running out with an excited look on his face. She crouched down to hug him as he wrapped his arms around her neck. "I get to see you play?!" he asked with unbridled anticipation. Hexxis nodded with an almost genuine smile. Taking his hand she lead him further into the city. The sun had begun to set, but it was still a little too early to go to Lorelei St yet. She took him to a restaurant and ate a bit of food. Witley appeared so happy to be with her, it honestly made her heart swell, and for another moment, she could swear the dread had disappeared.

After they were done, she walked with him, holding his hand as they made their way to the place she sat every night to sing. There was already a bit of a crowd even now and she lead him to the edge of that crowd just to the right of where she would sit, well within her view as she set up everything to play.

This time would be different.

She rested the guitar on her leg and she looked over to Witley and smiled before starting into the song.

You long to set the world straight
But you will fail if you wait or hesitate
So, take aim and pull the trigger back

She watched his face light up as she sang, a feeling deep within that felt unrivaled to the larger crowds she garnered every night. As though thousands of people could cheer for her and it would mean nothing compared to that one little boy's smile.

There was a time when I knew of love and amity
But it faded like the warmth inside a falling tear
Is it a crime to see fault in our humanity?
Why do we create this cycle of hate, breeding more fear?

She became so involved into her song, the feeling that drove her to a sense of determination she never felt on her own.

There’s a pain deep inside of me
And you’re struggling to stay alive
But if we last I know
We’ll live to see a brighter tomorrow

She stood up and sang with heart and passion, a certain drive that compelled not only herself but others to rise and become motivated.

You long to set the world straight
But you will fail if you wait or hesitate
So, take aim and pull the trigger back
Through every fear that you fight
You’re giving life to a spark of crimson red
It burns bright just waiting to ignite

Opening her eyes slowly to view the large crowd that had pulled to her. She didn't feel nervous, almost inviting the attention for once. She smiled and, for even a fleeting moment, felt happy.

As our impulses ring aloud
This world’s evolving to the sound of a new beginning

People were applauding and cheering for her as she looked to see Witley's smile face.

Except it wasn't there. Witley was gone. Her eyes searched the crowd in panic, looking through the bodies that obscured her view. She had to get higher. Jumping up onto the short wall she had been sitting on, she scanned the area, looking for him, for anything unusual. "Witley!" she called out, hoping maybe he had just gotten pushed a bit further back during her performance.

Where was he? No, she couldn't have lost him. Not like this. This was all her fault. He was relying on her, and she failed him. Dread boiled at the base of her stomach and rose to her lungs, tightening them, her whole body shaking as the crowds stared back at her in confusion.

Something then caught her eye to the right of her, a small yell as someone was pulling Witley away aggressively toward the intersection to cross the street.

Why was nobody helping him? Why were people just staring and not doing something?? She jumped down, tossing down her guitar into the case and pushed past people, running after them. "WITLEY!" she screamed out, just trying to get there faster. The man stealing the boy away noticed her and took off running across the street. No, not on her watch. She ran after him and grabbed onto Witley's arm. "Let him go!!" she demanded angrily. They struggled for control of the boy for a few grueling seconds at least as Witley screamed and cried in panic. His shrieks only causing her more anger as she shoved the other man away. He hesitated before deciding against continuing with this failed kidnapping and running off.

Her heart was pounding but the attacker was gone, relief washing over her as she had pulled the poor boy into a tight hug and refused to let go. His own arms wrapped around her as he cried into her shirt. She was trembling but he was safe.

She looked down at him. "It's okay... he's gone now. I am here. I will not let harm come to you." she spoke softly and he nodded calmly.

"LORELEI!!" someone screamed out.

Hexxis turned her head to the left to look at them, but suddenly noticed what her blind eye hadn't.

An oncoming truck.

She didn't even have time to gasp, her body reacting before she could think. Shoving the boy as far away as possible before the sound of screeching tires, a blaring horn, and then total darkness.

When Dreaming Ends

Hexxis couldn't even remember feeling pain, only blurry flashes of light in reds and whites as someone cried and crowds murmured in the distance. She tried to get up but her body simply wouldn't move. She couldn't feel anything other than the sticky red liquid that seemed to pour out of her endlessly. What had even happened? She couldn't remember. Why was she on the ground and why was it so cold? She tried to speak but the only sound that emitted was something between a gurgle and a wheeze that sounded unnatural and painful. Someone was speaking to her, but she couldn't make out the words as her vision faded and it fell silent once again.

She opened her eyes again and it was bright but blurry. People were frantically talking as someone noticed her fleeting consciousness. "Hey, stay with me, Zero.. You're going to be alright. Don't try to talk or move, we are prepping you for surgery." the nurse spoke before Hexxis faded back out and it fell dark again.

The next time she opened her eyes, the sun was out. Setting even. Her whole body ached and she still couldn't move without waves of pain that made her want to cry out. She stared down at the hospital bed with a blank expression as she realized her clothes were gone replaced by a gown and then reached up to her neck to notice her necklace was gone as well. A slight panic as she tried to sit up despite the overwhelming amount of pain. The EKG began to go crazy as her heartrate spiked from her movements and she began to wheeze. Nurses began to flood the room to hold her down and she screamed out trying to struggle against their grasp. One of the nurses injected something into the IV in her arm as she began to feel dizzy and very sleepy. "...tri.." she muttered, just wanting to find her phone. Scared and hurt, she knew she'd miss texting him and now she didn't know when she'd wake up again.

Hexxis heard a voice, someone calling her name as she slowly opened her aching eyes. "Zero?" She looked over to a nurse who smiled as she woke. "...i don't go by that name anymore.." Hexxis muttered quietly.

"Ahh, so is it Lorelei Heart then?" the nurse looked at her with intrigue and moved to the end of the bed and took up the clipboard, looking it over.

Hexxis didn't answer but merely looked down at herself again and saw her left arm was in a sling and she had quite a few bandages over the left side of her body. "What happened?" she asked, not being able to remember why she was even in the hospital to begin with.

"Well, you stopped a kidnapping in progress and were hit by a truck. You didn't break that many bones which was a miracle until we found out who you really were and realized you were a Meta. Not that it wasn't still a wonder you were still alive." she answered then looked to the chart. "Let's see. Dislocated left shoulder, a couple broken ribs, major hip sprain, moderate knee sprain, a collapsed lung, grade three concussion, and your heart stopped for 20 minutes. With all that, you still lived. I'd say luck was on your side that night."

That's right, she was trying to stop someone from taking Witley after her performance when a vehicle had hit her. It was her fault that Witley was even there, and she felt terrible. The same boy that had inspired her, she had almost killed. It took a moment to reflect over all of the injuries she had sustained. No wonder her whole body hurt to even move. "That night? How long has it been since I was in the accident?" she asked with a blank stare that masked a panicked and concerned feeling of dread.

"Two night's ago. So it's been a little over 24 hours."

Hexxis tensed slightly which sent a wave of pain over her body. She had missed texting Tri the morning after the incident and she was about to likely miss this day as well if she didn't get her phone back as soon as possible. "How long will I be in the hospital?"

"About five days, it would have been sooner but thankfully we saw in your medical file that you can't be healed without causing you possible injury. Your mercenary insurance does cover it... although you likely won't be able to do any work for at least four weeks. And the singing on the street will likely have to be put on pause for a few weeks as well to give your lungs time to heal from the injury."

Hexxis frowned, feeling even more useless now that she couldn't play the guitar, sing, or do mercenary work. Part of her had just wished she'd died instead. Whatever cruel fate being played with her life as she now had nothing. This wasn't luck, this was the worst outcome. She'd probably have to tell Tri everything and return, proving that she couldn't even manage this much. Even the simplest of tasks causing her near fatality. "...please do not list my location in my file..."

"Understandable... Oh, but you have a visitor who claims to be your roommate, so I'll send her in if that's okay."

Hexxis blinked with curiosity but nodded anyway. After a few minutes a short demon with dark skin and long blunt dark hair walked in wearing glasses and clutching a small duffle bag. Upon further inspection, Hexxis recognized the girl as the attendant from the library. "Roommate?" she questioned immediately.

"So that's what you look like under all that makeup and stuff." she muttered then approached the bed. "Well, I mean, if you wanted to. I talked to the little boy you saved and he told me you were staying at a hotel and earning money by singing. After what happened, I doubt you're in any condition to do so... I figured since you won't be able to make the same money, you could just come stay with me." she offered then blinked and remembered the duffle bag as she set it on the bed. "..ahh.. this is your stuff.. I was able to get it from the nurse to hold for you.. Your guitar is back at my place. And Witley is safe back at the orphanage." she explained.

Hexxis looked to the girl then immediately to the duffle bag, unzipping it and digging through it to find the cellphone and texting Tri immediately with the same message as she always gave. It was only thirty minutes late for today, but better than nothing. With that settled, she dug into the bag again and fished out the bell necklace and attempted to put it on with one hand.

"Let me help you with that..." she offered, securing the bell around Hexxis' neck. "My name is Ameila by the way.." she spoke then smiled at her. "How long are you unable to play?"

"Four weeks."

Ameila frowned, "Oh.." she then perked up with an idea. "I know, how about you come work at the library. I was looking to hire someone to help me during the summer... if you don't mind a boring day job. It'll be easier that way too. You won't be all alone and you can help out, get paid and have a place to stay."

Hexxis thought about it for a few minutes, then nodded. "My name is Hexxis Luz..."

Ameila smiled and nodded. "Great!"

Hexxis stared down at her phone and sighed. She unlocked the phone and inserted a number and let it sit there for a minute before backspacing the number and locking the phone. "Thank you." she spoke quietly, but even the solemn pain in her voice was barely contained as she didn't know what to do, but just tried her best to survive.

She had to prove something, and out of her own stubbornness, she wasn't giving up, no matter how stupid that might be in the end.

Just Don't Deceive Me

Hexxis stared at her phone with a blank frown. Ameila asked if she was okay and Hexxis nodded. She had to at least call Tri, he'd want to know why she didn't text him yesterday and even more so, staring at the message she had just sent, knew she had just lied to him. Hexxis couldn't bear to keep lying to Tri, she had always been so honest with him and didn't know when the lies had begun and where they would end if she didn't stop it here and now. Taking a deep breath, she entered a number into the dialer and hit the call button. Bring the phone to her ear, she waited for the line. Hopefully he would answer, if not, she'd just leave a voice message until he could call her back. Ameila gave Hexxis a reassuring smile and exited to the hallway so she could give her a bit of privacy for now.

Tri had been in the middle of dialing her number when the call came in. He quickly answered and brought the phone up to his ear as he stood off to the corner of the eating tent which was pretty deserted just now. "Hexxis?"

The moment she heard his voice, her words hitched and she inhaled shakily. "..tri.." she spoke, unable to mask the pain in her single word. Tears were building in her eyes like a hurt child or a toddler who'd been caught doing something they shouldn't have and she tightened her grip on her phone. She tried to steady her emotions the best she could, but it was still obvious that she wasn't well. "I am sorry that my message was not the truth. I never meant to deceive you, but was sent out of habit from my panic to message you as soon as I could." she explained, tears sliding down the markings on her face.

"That is fine, what happened? Are you in trouble? " the grip on his phone had tightened at her first word, and the fears he had been trying to hold back since yesterday had redoubled as she continued to talk. There was something off with her voice and the emotion he could hear. He braced himself and waited quietly, wings tight against his back and shoulders.

"Someone whom I was temporarily responsible for was in danger and out of my negligence, was injured protecting that person. I am not in trouble. I.. have been hospitalized but will be released soon." she explained, her hands shaking as sounds of sniffling betrayed her attempt to mask her stifled crying.

"Are they okay? How were you injured? Which hospital?" He asked quickly, alarmed.

"I have been informed the boy was returned to the orphanage safely. I sustained a lot of internal sprains and multiple exterior lacerations. I am in stable condition and have been advised not to perform strenuous work until my injuries have healed." she answered, swallowing hard as it had been difficult to even speak about what had happened, and now having to tell Tri about it all, scared of what he would think or say about what she had done. She looked around the room, "I do not know which hospital, I just woke up a few minutes ago so I have not had the chance to acquire the name." she confessed as she frowned and wanted to wipe her face from tears but didn't have the mobility in her free arm to do it as she let the wetness of her cheeks slowly grow cold before new tears warmed them again.

There was a flicker of confusion as she mentioned a boy from an orphanage...had she made a friend? All thoughts on the boy disappeared as she mentioned her injuries and he started to pace waiting to hear what happened to injure her so badly before she jumped to the next question. Internal damages and external laceration...."How were you injured?" He asked again, his pace quickening as he wanted to move and go to her but didn't know where. "There should be a call button for a nurse..they can tell you which hospital. I will be there ..soon "

He posed the question again, and with the process of elimination, knew now what he was asking. She paused, reluctant to tell him exact details of the accident in question. "I had chased the attacker into the street and after saving the boy, was struck by an oncoming vehicle." she answered quietly, the hesistancy clear in her voice. She slowly squeezed the phone between her ear and right shoulder, wincing slightly as she was reaching for some call button she found next to her when the next words made her stop. "no." she protested softly and withdrew her hand. Hesitating again she tried to figure out what to say. She was about to tell him she merely couldn't reach it like this, but she didn't want to keep lying. "If your intent is to take me back, then I am reluctant to tell you the location. I do not wish to return yet." she spoke, trying her best to stand her ground about it even if she felt it was likely futile. "I.. I have someone here who is going to assist in my recovery. She has offered me a place to stay and given me an opportunity to work in the library for her until I am better. I would like to take this humble offer of hers. I have a lot that I need to sort out and do not feel that I am ready to return.. especially like this."

Tri stopped cold as she told him how she was injured and resisted the urge to curse, moving back into pacing the far end if the large tent. He stopped again when she said no, near asking her no about what until she continued and he started shaking his head even if she couldn't see him. "As much as I wish to give you your freedom on this matter there is no discussion. You were hit by a moving vehicle and are currently in the hospital suffering injuries. This is -not- the time to start picking on the kindness of strangers or new friends. This is when you start relying on family or those closest to you. I know you are not looking for Zephyr and from all you have told me you are trying to find a way to live independently but sometimes that does not work, you have to have someone even if they are not always with you. Hexxis please tell me the name of the hospital and wait for me...I do not want to have to order you to do so..."

The more he spoke, the more her chest began to hurt. It was futile. He wouldn't understand. She would never get to choose anything for herself. Her one chance ruined. There was a flood of tears now as she somehow kept the strength to stay on the phone. "I don't want to rely on family and I'm not close to anyone!" she raised her voice in despair. "So what if I'm not looking for Zephyr.. You didn't want me to. You don't want me there. I just wanted to be left alone." Hexxis sobbed as she simply couldn't keep control of her emotions anymore. "You don't care what I want. You just want to impose your own views of what you think I want. I don't want to tell you. And I do not want you to come here." she trembling with anger, fear, and sadness as Ameila watched her sympathetically from the small window in the door, unsure whether to come back in with Hexxis crying the way she was. "I do not want to have to fight you on it... please do not make me." she begged softly through shaky breaths and endless tears.

There was silence on the other line. "Fine" was the cold reply "continue to send me status reports "

Hexxis had honestly expected him to keep pushing the matter, ready to hang up to protect the information if forced to. But then he complied. And even though there was relief that he was going to let her continue, there was a tightness in her chest at how cold the single word that was given to her. She knew now that she had hurt him with what she had said, and she couldn't take it back even if she changed her mind now. It had already been said and she fell silent. Regret and heartache only creeping into her heart to make a home to grow within. She could not understand why she continued to hurt those around her, and her expression faded from her face and she sighed quietly. "...thank you..." was all she could muster even if was a solemn expression of gratitude.

"Don't thank me" he said quietly. " and be careful" he said added before he hanged up. Pulling the phone down slowly he stared at it for a moment and pocketed it, leaving to go talk to Li.

She frowned at Tri's words, her grip on the phone loosened as she was trying to keep a stone face but found it so difficult to do the one thing she had done her whole life. "...i'm sorry..." she muttered in an almost inaudible whimper before the line went silent and the call ended. Dropping the phone to her lap, she could see the visible shaking of her hands, trembling violently as the first new tear broke through her expressionless mask, the rest followed suit in an unbroken stream as she leaned forward and shoved her face into both hands despite the immense pain it caused. Ameila ran in as Hexxis began into an outburst of loud uncontrollable violent sobbing. The demon was panicked and didn't know what to do as she pressed the call button for a nurse. Hexxis took in a deep shaky breath before her stomach churned hard and she moved her hands away to cover her mouth. Ameila blinked in surprised and searched the room with her eyes before locating a trash can for Hexxis to vomit in before a couple nurses entered the room and reluctantly ordered Hexxis to be sedated for now and Ameila would need to leave, determining that Hexxis was just under too much stress to handle visitors at the moment.
