The chain bucked almost immediately, and Rodney had time to flinch before being sent back into the snow. His breathing picked up, and it felt like he had to gulp for air.
It hadn't hurt, it had only been a push and a scraping feeling, but his heart still felt like it was in his throat.
He clutched his scarf, every part of him waiting for the next blow.
"P...please. Not again. I can't. I can't, I can't do this, I can't..."

Lawr just stared at Rodney, one brow raised uncertainly.
He did not understand the reaction and therefore did not understand how best to respond to it himself.
He lowered his claws slowly and as non-threateningly as he could.
"Are you all right?" he asked cautiously.

Rodney seemed to regain control of himself more and more with each second there wasn't a follow up hit.
"I'm okay. ....I'm okay, thanks, I'm fine..." he repeated deliriously instead.
The first attempt could have gone better.

You're not hurt. You just got knocked. I took the damage, see? We can take, oh, I dunno. I mean, three more hits at least.
Rodney looked very hard at the snow, clutching Seven like a lifeline.
"Seven s-says...I can...t-take three more."
Physically, at least.

Lawrence still looked dubious.
"If you are sure." he said. "I am assuming you would not like to switch positions?"
He didn't like hurting Rodney, it was not a rewarding task, but like any other task, if it had to be done he would do it. "You could try a wider stance, perhaps use the hook to block this time?"
The sooner it was over, the sooner he could stop having the impression he was just setting himself more and more as the villain.

Rodney looked genuinely even more terrified at this proposition.
"H-hit you?" he whispered, although he did (after a lot more breathing in through his nose and out through his mouth) manage to make it to his feet again. He pulled the hook closer to his fist.
The weight of the bulky chain and grappling hook weren't any trouble.
It was just the anticipation of violence.

This time when Lawr attacked it was much less than it had been previously, cautious of distressing Rodney further than he already had.
"I do not enjoy this." he said, and it was a genuine statement, edged with bafflement, because normally hurting people - especially those weaker or more afraid than him - was satisfying. Rodney was not enjoyable to hurt and he felt that the more he did the more and more he was going to be set apart from the other man.

This time Rodney managed to stay on his feet, but the claws (even with the much lighter blow) still brushed Seven aside easily.
And he shut his eyes again.
Enjoyment wasn't the word he would have used either.
After he gained control of himself (again), he lowered Seven.
"We don't have to," he whispered. "You don't have to. This was all...this was a bad idea."

"No." Lawrence said. "It is an important thing for you to learn like you say, lest it be the monsters which teach you it the hard way. As much as it might hurt me to strike you, it is relevant."
He held up his claws. "I would feel much better however if you would test how it feels to strike a fear shield yourself, so that we can be even. I get...nervous when I am the only one on the offensive."
He didn't know if Rodney would take him up on it, but it was worth an attempt.

"S...strike," Rodney said. "Yes. Okay. You're right. I c-can..."
He swallowed very thickly, trying not to hyperventilate over this too. This he didn't want to do either. He didn't want to put Lawrence in this position. Offense, defense, but he was going to let someone get killed, someone was going to die on his behalf, just because he...
Look, it doesn't have to be striking. Let's nix the striking. You are terrible at striking, I have seen you strike.
Rodney let Seven's chain slide through his hand, and the major weight on the hook end drop to their feet. Taking the chain, he looped it behind Lawr's torso.
"Um," he started, flushing. "If I...hold it here, then, pull it tighter, maybe..."

Lawrence gave Rodney a very wide-eyed unfocused sort of look as he found himself with the chain around him.
"Sounds good." he said distantly. "Try it then." He braced himself, but he did not defend.

Rodney set his sneaker against Sorrow's hook, wrapping the chain around his wrist. "Tell me to stop, if it...gets too much," Rodney said, already flinching on Lawr's behalf. Pulling, as a gesture, felt...easier, than pushing or striking.
The chain pulled taunt like a hangman's noose.

Lawr took a deep breath just in time for the chain to twist it out, tight against his shield, enough to surprisingly have Butch let him know it was draining them both with how firm it was.
"Excellent." he managed to whisper breathlessly.
"Can you do ..more?" he asked, seeming unphased by the attack but genuinely feeling his muscles and bones creak under the strain, simply used to waving off pain as a bodily and optional signal.
Butch paid rapt attention, carefully monitoring his shield.

"I think so," Rodney said softly, a little confused by the reaction. He'd been watching Lawr closely and looked nearly ready to panic on Lawr's behalf. When he wasn't panicking, he could feel the cold swirl of Butch's fear. Sorrow's was all cool water over towering stone. There was a certain deceptive peacefulness, like being enveloped in the interior of a cathedral.
Rodney gripped the chain and the metal wrapped slightly tighter around Lawr's chest, this time against resistance, although Rodney shied and seemed reluctant to overpower even that much.
